MLB Handicapper Free Play: Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins

Houston (Keuchel) at Minnesota (Hughes) -120 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

At the start of the season, if you were to someone that Phil Hughes and Dallas Keuchel would be ranked 8th and 12th respectively in WAR among starting pitchers you would have been laughed at an accused of being drunk. But littered among all of the league's big names and arms are two unassuming guys that have figured out how to succeed at a high level. Hughes' story centers on throwing strikes and avoiding the home run ball. Clearly with Hughes pitching in Target Field as oppose to Yankee Stadium helps. It's led to a sparkling 3.12 ERA and 2.59 FIP. Keuchel goes about it in similar fashion ? miss a fair amount of bats (64 Ks in 76.2 IP) and keep the walks (15 BBs) and home runs (4) to a minimum. As a result, he currently flashes a 2.70 ERA and nearly identical 2.74 FIP. While the Twins and Astros have shown an ability to plate runs we're still dealing with two below average AL offenses in a pitcher friend park Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

LA Angels (Weaver) at Oakland (Gray) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Oakland

Afternoon start in Oakland as the A's go for the three-game sweep of the Angels. The first two games of the series were all Oakland with 9-5 and 11-3 victories. We'll throw our support the A's way as young gun Sonny Gray takes on veteran Jered Weaver. In looking through Weaver's game log this is arguably his toughest test of the season – on the road vs. left-handed heavy Oakland. Let's also not forget the day time environment at Oakland Coliseum which tends to help the ball carry more. Weaver of course a fly baller suited more for night games in Anaheim. Overall Weaver has been very solid this season with a 2.99 ERA. But he's also been a tad fortunate with a .225 BABIP. On the flip side, Oakland's Sonny Gray is a less than ideal matchup for the Angels. Gray is first and foremost a groundballer (56.95%) and second, filthy against right-handers (.205 BA/.304 SLG) – a key with the big bats of Mike Trout (? Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks

Cincinnati (Leake) +105 at Arizona (Arroyo) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Cincinnati

At 37 years old, Arizona's Bronson Arroyo is still tossing frisbee curveballs and giving his team a chance to win every time he takes the mound. After a horrific start to the season, Arroyo has settled down and cut his ERA nearly in half (7.77 to 4.15) over his last five starts. However, Arroyo does have a history of nagging injuries and while he rarely does time on the DL, they can impact his performance. Last time out against New York he was forced to exit the game after 75 pitches due to a "tender" elbow. His velocity in that start was also 2-3 mph slower than normal. He claims everything is fine, but we know his margin for error is small these days and anything less than 100% should be a concern for the D-Backs. Cincinnati's Mike Leake has been dominant with a 2.79 ERA and no home runs allowed (56.5% GB rate) over his last five starts. He obviously learned a thing or two from Arroyo during their Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

San Diego (Stults) at Arizona (Miley) -120 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

With the roof expected open at Chase Field and two starting pitchers that have struggled with the long ball, we can project more than a few balls will leave the yard in tonight's Padres-Diamondbacks matchup. San Diego's Eric Stults is about as fringe a starter as you will see, even for the National League. His K rate is currently a career-low 4.44 per 9 and the FB/HR rate an alarming 14.1%. It is a rare occurrence but Stults is averaging a strikeout every TWO innings and has allowed at least one home run in eight of 10 starts despite averaging about 5 innings per start. Wade Miley has also been pitch-to-contact with a 15.6% FB/HR rate. Most alarming about Miley is for the third straight year his walk rate is up – more proof he’s no longer able to fool the league. In 29 innings of work at Chase Field, Miley's ERA sits at 7.14 with nine long balls. With the roof open last night we saw three home runs, 12 Read more

According to Baseball-Reference's Pythagorean Win-Loss record, the Oakland A's have been the "unluckiest" team in the American League. Based on their runs scored vs. allowed the A's should be 36-15 rather than 31-20 – which is still the best record in the AL.

Exactly 50% of Pittsburgh's game have been decided by 1 run. The Pirates are 14-11 in those contests.

The Royals are 24-26 overall but only 4-12 in 1-run games.

Despite having a right-handed heavy lineup, the San Francisco Giants are a MLB-best 20-11 vs. right-handed starters.

The Los Angeles Angels are 19-6 vs. teams below .500 and 9-16 vs. teams above .500.

The Phillies are 13-31 vs. the American League the last three seasons including this year's 1-8 mark.

The Giants are the most profitable team in the National League at +12.5 units.

The Diamondbacks are the least profitable team in the National League at -10.4 units.

The Blue Jays are the most profitable team in the American League at +8.3 units.

The Red Sox are the least profitable team in the American League at -14.5 units.

MLB Handicapping Free Play: Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wood) +104 at San Diego (Buckner) O/U 7
Recommendation: Chicago

Chicago’s Travis Wood has pitched a little better than his 4.61 ERA and was given no favors of late with games against division foes St. Louis and Milwaukee as well as a start in bandbox Cellular Field. His K/9 (8.40) is actually two full strikeouts ahead of last year and his FIP of 3.59 is more than a full run less than his ERA. Tonight the extreme fly baller can rest easy knowing he can challenge hitters in the zone and likely avoid the long ball. The Padres will call up veteran journeyman Billy Buckner who was last seen slinging poop for the Angels last season. In 155.2 MLB innings, Bucker's ERA is over 6.00 and his K-to-BB ratio a dismal 110-61. And even though he was pitching in the hitter friendly PCL that last two seasons, Buckner still flashes alarmingly high WHIPs of 1.60 and 1.39. Offensively, both teams are obviously poor. Statistically the Padres are the worst offense in the National Read more

Oakland (Kazmir) -125 at Toronto (Hendriks) O/U 9
Recommendation: Oakland

Big enough starting pitching mismatch where we can come in with a play on the road favorite Oakland A's. Yes, Toronto's Liam Hendriks has put up good numbers in Triple-A (1.48 ERA) and you'd like to give guys who struggled early in their careers and chance to "figure things out" after being sent down. But the problem is Hendriks has never shown the ability to miss bats and faces a squad that is noted for pounding mediocre right-handed pitching. In 33 games against right-handed starters, the A's are averaging over five runs per game. Oakland's Scott Kazmir should be rested and ready after being ejected from his last start for arguing balls and strikes. His seasonal numbers, as a result of good health, have been sharp with a 2.39 ERA and impressive 52% groundball rate. If he can keep the ball in the yard like he has all season then Oakland's lineup will plate enough runs vs. Hendriks to cash our Read more
