College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 5

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I'll admit I was a little turned off by Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster's verbal distaste for having to play Georgia Tech on short rest. I knew Tech's defense was good but the Yellow Jackets are notorious for taking advantage of ill-prepared teams. Foster however may have been sandbagging because the Hokies went down to Atlanta and completely shut down GT's running game (129 yards). And what makes Foster's defense impressive is how they've progressively gotten better against Tech's offense: 2010 - 426 total yards, 2011 - 340 total yards, 2012 - 288 total yards, and last week - 273 yards. Saturday's win marked the Hokies' fourth straight victory over the Yellow Jackets. And I'll throw a little praise Logan Thomas' way. The senior QB came up with arguably his best performance in two seasons: 19-of-25, 221 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 58 yards rushing, 1 TD.

If you follow me and the Sportsmemo blog's game previews you know that I've been having a field day betting against SMU. The Mustangs put up a little better effort against TCU (10-7 lead at halftime) but once again broke down when times got tough. The Horned Frogs put up 31 in the fourth quarter including a kick Read more

College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at TCU Horned Frogs

SMU at TCU
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
TCU -19.5 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: TCU -19 O/U 51.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: TCU -14.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: TCU

If Texas A&M wanted to, it could have hung 60+ on SMU last weekend. Instead, the Aggies backed off late and won 42-13. This week, I don't think TCU has the ability to score at that type of rate but the Horned Frogs could offset that by putting up more resistance defensively.

TCU is off to a 1-2 start and has lost the services of quarterback Casey Pachall. Trevone Boykin is no doubt a tick down from Pachall but at home, off a bye week, and against a defense that has allowed 315.7 ypg passing, I expect him to have one of his better games.

Ever since Week 1's dismal showing against Texas Tech at home – in what should have been SMU's Game of the Year – I've been looking to fade this team. You have three key Read more

College Football Handicapping: Early line moves for Week 5

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let’s take a look at some of the early line moves for this week’s college football action.

UConn at Buffalo
CRIS Opener: UConn -2.5
CRIS Current: Buffalo -1
Comment: Buffalo comes in off of a bye week. UConn hung tough against Michigan but a lot of it had to do with the Wolverines committing four turnovers.

UAB at Vanderbilt
CRIS Opener: Vanderbilt -23
CRIS Current: Vanderbilt -19.5
Comment: Oddsmakers and bettors don't seem to be on the same page when it comes to the Commodores. Last week against UMass, Vandy opened -36, closed -29 and the Minutemen covered rather easily.

Iowa at Minnesota
CRIS Opener: Minnesota -3.5
CRIS Current: Iowa -1
Comment: Gophers off to a strong 4-0 start but have yet to be tested. If Minny goes off as the favorite it will mark the first time doing so vs. a Big Ten opponent since 2009.

Arizona at Washington
CRIS Opener: Washington -7
CRIS Current: Washington -10
Comment: Arizona comes in off a bye week but has played arguably the softest schedule in the country: Northern Arizona, Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is usually Boise State who sits back and capitalizes on other teams' mistakes not the other way around. Friday's game against Fresno was one of the more sloppy games I've ever seen out of the Broncos yet they somehow covered the number (+3.5) and had a chance to win the game outright. Down 17-10 early in the second quarter, Boise scored a touchdown but failed on a mysterious two-point conversion (note that the final score was 41-40). Miss one two-point conversion and you're likely to go for two again at some point. Midway through the fourth quarter the Broncos cut the lead to 34-32 and had yet another failed two-point conversion. On their next drive they finally cracked the code and put eight on the board but it put them up only six. Fresno would score a touchdown with three minutes left to give them the 41-40 lead for good. All told, Boise was 1-for-3 on two-point conversions, 1-for-4 on fourth down conversions, and committed two turnovers. Happy to kick PATs, Fresno had no turnovers, was 2-for-2 on fourth downs, and moved to 3-0 on the season.

It is hard for serious bettors to be active in laying huge points because there are typically more factors involved than Read more

College Football Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at Texas A&M Aggies

09.18.2013     06:50 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
SMU at Texas A&M
Saturday, 4 pm PT – ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -26.5 O/U 82
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -28.5 O/U 79
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Texas A&M -30.5
Andrew Lange’s Recommendation: Texas A&M 1st half

SMU can have all the bye weeks and time to prepare in the world and it still won't save them from getting beat up by Texas A&M. No question the Aggies are in a bad spot and as we saw last week with Michigan following the Notre Dame game, no one is immune to a letdown. But to me, there is a class and coaching difference that outweighs the situational.

In Week 1, which should have been SMU's Super Bowl as they were fortunate enough to host an in-state foe from a BCS conference, the Mustangs laid a big egg in a 41-23 loss to Texas Tech. Statistically the Mustangs were right there but the end result was nothing more than the Red Raiders Read more

College Football Handicapping: What to do with bad football teams?

09.17.2013     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're through Week 3 of the college football season and for a few teams it's been a struggle. Some of those struggles oddsmakers and bettors spotted well in advance while others weren't as obvious. Let's take a look at some of these teams and decide whether or not they have "bet on" potential moving forward.

Wake Forest (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) - For years the Demon Deacons fielded a competitive team with pointspread value under long-time head coach Jim Grobe. But the program has unquestionably deteriorated with records of 5-7, 3-9, 6-7, and 5-7 the last four years. Even with solid turnover margins of +8 and +9 – a staple under Grobe –the last two seasons, Wake looks outmanned and slow compared to the rest of the ACC. They're off to a 1-2 start and once again can't run the football (86.3 ypg) or find consistency in the passing game with senior Tanner Price. This is likely a do-or-die season Grobe and I don't see many more chances for straight up wins on the schedule. This week's price of -3 at Army tells us all we need to know about Wake's place in the betting markets.

Florida International (0-3 SU/ATS) - Pretty Read more
