Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the AFC East

07.18.2016     07:56 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Our NFL Team Previews for the upcoming campaign continues.  This week, I’ll be focusing on the AFC East, and next week I’ll conclude the series with a look at four squads from the NFC East.  Teams are listed in alphabetical order within their division.

We'll start with the Buffalo Bills who are lined at 8 wins for the upcoming season.  Buffalo owns the longest playoff drought in the NFL; now at 16 seasons and counting.  The Bills have at least returned to relevance over the past two seasons, winning nine games in 2014, followed by an 8-8 campaign last year.

Rex Ryan is set to begin his second year on the job.  Rex’s brother, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, coached one of the worst defenses in NFL history in New Orleans last year.  Now Ryan takes over a defense that plummeted from a no. 4 yardage ranking in 2014 to 19th in 2015 as sacks dropped from 54 to 21.  Top two draft choices Shaq Lawson (Clemson), Reggie Ragland (Alabama) are expected to contribute in the sacks department immediately.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman crafted a Super Bowl caliber offense Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the NFC North

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, when I previewed the AFC North, there wasn’t a whole lot that I liked in the division.  If I’m going to put an AFC North win total in my pocket, it’s not going to be on an over wager!  But that’s most assuredly not the case in the NFC North, where several teams – including a Super Bowl contender – have the feeling of an undervalued commodity at this stage of the offseason.

Let’s start with the Chicago Bears who are lined at 7 or 7.5 wins; a legitimate split line.  Bettors shopping around for the best price on the Bears (over or under) should remember the standard rule of thumb for converting juice into wins with mid-range totals (teams lined between 6.5 and 9.5 wins). Fifty cents of juice equates to about a half win.  If you like the over, an over 7 -140 trumps over 7.5 at +100.  If you like under, under 7.5 -140 trumps under 7 at +100.

Last year, the Bears went 6-10 SU, 8-8 ATS and 8-8 O/U.  Their mainstream stats were indicative of a sub .500 squad: ranked 21st in total offense, #14 in total defense, #22 in yards per play differential Read more

College Football Handicapping: Vanderbilt names Shurmur starting QB

07.06.2016     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt isn't messing around as it already named sophomore Kyle Shurmur the team's starting quarterback. Shurmur completed only 43% of his passes last season but did throw for over 200 yards and 3 TDs in the Commodores' season-ending loss to Tennessee. Over the last two seasons, Vanderbilt's team QB Rating is right around 100.0 thanks in large part to a dismal 24-35 TD-to-INT ratio.

“We’re not going to enter into the season like we did my first year — talking about multiple quarterbacks,” Mason said. “There is a (starter) and a (backup). That’s it. That’s how firm I’m going to be. That’s how firm I need to be. I don’t need us to get distracted by a quarterback controversy.”

College Football Handicapping: Minnesota excited about new running attack

07.06.2016     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article about Minnesota's new zone blocking scheme under first-year offensive coordinator Jay Johnson (UL-Lafayette). The Golden Gophers return running backs Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith who as freshmen combined for 1,379 yards and 5.0 ypc.

"We’re still going to be a run-based football team, and [the running backs] all have the skill sets to do that, that’s for sure," he said. "Those two [Brooks and Smith] they could play in just about any scheme. They’re that talented. It’s more about getting the people around them to do their job to give those guys a chance.

"If we can get them to the line of scrimmage full-speed without somebody slowing them down, they make tremendous full-speed cuts and we’ll have a lot of big plays out of those two kids. A lot of times, they didn’t get that chance a year ago."

I’ve already previewed four NFL Divisions throughout the hot summer months – we’re at the halfway point; with four more divisional previews still to come.  Let’s continue the process this week with an early breakdown of the AFC North. As always, teams are listed in alphabetical order within the division.

The Baltimore Ravens had been a model of consistency throughout the John Harbaugh/Joe Flacco eras...until last year.  Baltimore suffered through an injury riddled disaster of a campaign, finishing with a 5-11 SU, 5-9-2 ATS mark, while going 7-9 O/U.  By the end of the season a franchise record 20 different players were on injured reserve.  It’s worth noting that the Ravens switched their field surface this past offseason, at least in part due to all of those injuries last year, replacing the field turf with natural grass for 2016.

The betting markets are expecting a significant Ravens bounceback this year, lining Baltimore as an 8.5 win team for 2016 (there are a handful of books that have Baltimore lined at 8 wins with juice to the over).  A quick look at their mainstream stats from last Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the NFC South

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Continuing my summertime tour through the eight NFL divisions, this week, I’ll be taking an in-depth look at the four NFC South teams.  As always, teams are listed in alphabetical order within the division.

The Atlanta Falcons (lined at 7 or 7.5 wins for 2016, depending on the book) went 6-1 SU to open the season last year, but stumbled down the stretch with a 2-7 finish, finishing the season with an improved, yet still disappointing 8-8 SU record.  They were money losers (6-10 ATS, including a 2-10 slide to close out the campaign) despite their two win improvement from 2014 to 2015.  That came on the heels of a two win improvement (from four to six victories) from 2013 to 2014.

The Falcons mainstream stats show one clear weakness from 2015, despite facing one of the easier scheduled in the NFL last year.  Their 30 giveaways ranked among the bottom five teams in the NFL at avoiding turnovers.  They finished +0.0 yards per play, (obviously) right at the league average with the #7 ranked offense and the #16 ranked defense based on yardage numbers.   Both coordinators return from last year’s Read more

College Football Handicapping: Penn State says offense will be much improved

06.27.2016     08:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State head coach James Franklin believes his offense is poised to make big strides in 2016. It wasn't massive, but in Franklin's second season, the Nittany Lions' offense did improve. In 2014, PSU finished dead last in Big Ten play at 267.5 ypg and allowed a whopping 44 sacks. Last year, the offense jumped to seventh (369.5 ypg) though still struggled at protecting the quarterback with 39 sacks allowed. PSU's first four opponents Kent State, Pitt, Temple, and Michigan all ranked 37th or better nationally in total defense in 2015.

"All the things are in place for us to make a significant jump offensively," Franklin said. "And we knew that."

"There are so many aspects now that are falling into place that you're going to have to deal with defensively," Franklin said. "As we all know, you can be very, very

Canadian Football League Betting Preview: Ottawa Redblacks

Ottawa Redblacks (2015: 12-6 SU, 12-6 ATS, 10-8 O/U)

The defending East Division champions will have a major challenge on their hands in trying to duplicate 2015’s success. Everything went right for Ottawa as it jumped from 2-16 in their expansion season to 12 wins and in the process advancing to the Grey Cup. Regression almost seems too obvious but keep in mind the East continues to be the weaker of the two divisions and the remaining teams all have question marks of some kind. Ottawa’s success came in large part because of 41-year-old quarterback Henry Burris who posted a 70.9% completion rate and an incredible 101 QB rating; 93.4 and 78.7 the previous two seasons. It’s not realistic to expect him to match 2015’s production. Burris does however possess one of the best receiving corps in the CFL led by Greg Ellingson, Chris Williams, Ernest Jackson and Brad Sinopoli.

Ottawa did lose upwards of a half dozen of their veteran players to free agency. The departures of offensive lineman Colin Kelly and defensive stalwarts Shawn Lemon, Justin Capicciotti, Keith Shologan and Jovon Johnson will be big obstacles to overcome early Read more

Canadian Football League Betting Preview: Hamilton Tiger-Cats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2015: 10-8 SU, 11-7 ATS, 6-12 O/U)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have been a strong fundamentally sound team and organization since day one of the Kent Austin era but that consistency will be tested in 2016. Hamilton will begin the season without their top quarterback, Zach Collaros, who was on his way to an MOP season before a torn ACL in September ended his year. Backup Jeremiah Masoli did a nice job stepping in late last season and had a very productive training camp. The receiving corps projects to be above average with Andy Fantuz, Chad Owens, Luke Tasker and promising talents Tiquan Underwood and Terrence Toliver. The offensive line should be very good once again and this team has arguably the best special teams unit in the CFL. The Ticats did lose their offensive coordinator but hired a quality replacement in Stefan Ptaszek. Ptaszek was a winner as a player and completely turned around the McMaster University football program. By all accounts, he has a brilliant mind for designing and implementing offenses and should emerge as one of the league’s top coordinators.

Hamilton’s did lose top flight kicker Justin Read more

Canadian Football League Betting Preview: Toronto Argonauts

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto Argonauts (2015: 10-8 SU, 9-9 ATS, 8-10 O/U)

It is a very momentous season for the Toronto Argos who finally have a home stadium to call their own as they play their first season at BMO Field; site of the 2016 Grey Cup. Toronto was very active in free agency during the offseason by bringing in the likes of offensive lineman Josh Bourke to bolster a suspect front five. The suspect o-line has played a big part in veteran quarterback Ricky Ray’s inability to stay on the field. Brian Bulcke has a chance to be a solid addition on the defensive line but health is an issue for him. They also added Bryan Hall and Justin Hickman to the defensive front and Keon Raymond in the secondary. The Argos did a solid job filling a lot of their holes but the key for this teams remains Ray’s health. Behind him this season, there is no more insurance policy after Trevor Harris signed with Ottawa. Logan Kilgore will be the team’s backup and he doesn’t have a ton of CFL experience. It is vital for Ray to stay on the field if the Argos are going to make a run at the Grey Cup on their home soil. Veteran CFL defensive coordinator Rich Stubler takes Read more
