College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Ohio State at Rutgers
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -21 O/U NL
CRIS Current: No Line
Recommendation: Ohio State

Top-ranked Ohio State remains undefeated after last Saturday's 38-10 victory over Penn State. The quarterback issues are still looming for the Buckeyes as J.T. Barrett took over for Cardale Jones and gave the offense the spark it needed late to earn the spread covering victory. It's the first pointspread cover for the Buckeyes since their Week 1 triumph at Virginia Tech.

Rutgers rallied back from a 25-point deficit to beat Indiana 55-52. The QB-WR combo of Chris Laviano and Leonte Carroo has been solid, teaming up for 9 TDs, but the status of Carroo remains up in the air after he left last week's contest with an ankle injury. He's listed as questionable but when asked about his status, Carroo stated, "I'll definitely be playing next week.”

The Scarlet Knights might have some trouble in this game due to some key injuries. Along with the aforementioned Carroo, defensive back Blessuan Austin and safeties Davon Jacobs and Kiy Hester all are listed Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look back and NFL Week 6

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 6 of the NFL is in the rear view mirror as the 2015 regular season approaches the halfway point.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll look to answer three questions that stood out to me following Sunday’s action.

How good are the Jets?
In the midst of a season where there don’t appear to be a whole host of elite Super Bowl contenders, the Jets 4-1 start has bettors and pundits taking notice.  The Patriots, Bengals and Packers are the clear Top 3 teams in any reasonable set of NFL power ratings.  There’s a legitimate argument to be made that the Jets could be #4 on that list, ahead of or equal to other hot start teams like the Cardinals, Falcons or Panthers.

The Jets won only four games last year; their fourth consecutive non-winning season.  With Todd Bowles as the new head coach, New York was lined as a 7.5 win team here in 2015 in the offseason betting markets.  The training camp injury to Geno Smith left Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback; a switch that the betting markets didn’t react to very much.  But Fitzpatrick has been a difference maker for New Read more

NFL Gambling Free Pick: Washington Redskins at New York Jets

Washington at NY Jets
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
New York -5.5 O/U 41.5
CRIS Current: New York -7 O/U 40.5
Recommendation: New York

How good are these Jets?  They won only four games last year; their fourth consecutive non-winning season.  With Todd Bowles as the new head coach, New York was lined as a 7.5 win team here in 2015 in the offseason betting markets.  At this stage of the season, that number looks very short, but the residual effects of their preseason ranking are still on display given this cheap pointspread.  If the Jets are an elite team, capable of winning ten or eleven games – and they certainly look that way – laying less than a TD at home with them against a team like Washington is truly a pointspread bargain.

The Redskins are riddled with key injuries right now.  They’ll be missing two starting offensive linemen, including Kirk Cousins best protector, tackle Trent Williams; bad news on a week where the Jets get behemoth defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson back in the lineup. Washington’s secondary is a mess as well, Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines

Michigan State at Michigan
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan -6.5 O/U 41
CRIS Current: Michigan -7.5 O/U 42
Recommendation: Michigan State

This is a fascinating game; a contest where the contrasts between Las Vegas and the mainstream college football world are on full display for everyone to see.  The pointspread itself has been a major issue in social media discussion this week, with the Wolverines getting bet up as high as -8.5 before some buyback on the Spartans, driving the line back down to the current -7.5 number as I write this on Thursday morning.  Of course, Michigan State is ranked at #4 in the Coaches Poll, while Michigan is #14, giving ill-informed TV commentators the right to call it an upset if Michigan wins the game – even if the Wolverines don’t cover the spread.

Last week at this time, the lookahead line at the Westgate Superbook here in Vegas for Michigan State – Michigan was sitting at pick ‘em.  Then Michigan did what they’ve been doing all year – blowing out foes in bad spots.  And Michigan State did Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

USC at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -4 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -6.5 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Over

The USC Trojans will be looking to take the first step in turning the page on the Steve Sarkisian era as they travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame in this annual rivalry battle. USC fired Sarkisian this past week and stepping in for the second time as interim head coach will be Clay Helton who did the same when Ed Orgeron left the team after the 2013 regular season. From multiple accounts, the players have shown positive support for Helton moving forward. Kenny Bigelow: "We have a lot of older guys here now that are able and old enough and mature enough to step up and get everybody rallied behind Coach Helton as we go forward." Connor Spears: "We all kind of know what we have to do, and I think Helton's going to do a tremendous job of keeping us in line and making sure we perform."

USC’s last game was an ugly 17-12 loss to Washington last Thursday night as double-digit favorites. It’s unclear just how Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Pittsburgh at Clemson
Saturday, 9:30 am PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Georgia Tech -2.5 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Georgia Tech -3 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

It's only mid-October and "giving up" on teams can be a quick way to miss out on potential winners. Not only is there plenty of time for a team to right the ship but pointspreads are being adjusted on a weekly basis. Take Georgia Tech, who after four straight losses, finds itself laying a field goal against Pittsburgh. Two weeks ago, against a similarly power rated team, the Yellow Jackets were laying -6.5 against North Carolina. The problem though is while you want to remain proactive and leave the door open for a turnaround, everything about this Georgia Tech team screams it isn't coming anytime soon.

Yes, three of Tech's losses came on the road but it's the way in which they lost that has me most concerned. Despite Clemson being in a potential flat spot off its big win over Notre Dame, the Tigers outgained the Yellow Jackets 7.26-4.11 yards per play. The week prior, GT jumped out to a 21-0 lead on North Carolina but I'm more Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions at Ohio State Buckeyes

Penn State at Ohio State
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -18 O/U 47
CRIS Current: Ohio State -17 O/U 48
Recommendation: Penn State

Ohio State's pointspread futility continued last week as it didn't sniff a cover in its 49-28 win over Maryland. Yes, the Buckeyes are being asked to lay overinflated prices and no, bettors aren't going to be suddenly subject to a ton of value with this squad. However, it's important to point out that while OSU hasn't looked smooth, they are still dominating the opposition. Take a look at their game-by-game yards per play gained an allowed breakdown.

Ohio State (10.21 ypp)/Virginia Tech (4.64 ypp)
Ohio State (4.37 ypp)/Hawaii (2.70 ypp)
Ohio State (4.52 ypp)/Northern Illinois (2.57 ypp)
Ohio State (7.30 ypp)/Western Michigan (4.57 ypp)
Ohio State (8.48 ypp)/Indiana (4.42 ypp)
Ohio State (6.48 ypp)/Maryland (5.59 ypp)

All told, Ohio State has outgained its first six opponents by an average of 2.57 yards per play. That's a half yard better than last year's squad that won the National Championship.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spartans and Buckeyes still highly ranked, still not covering pointspreads

10.12.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Talking about the college football national championship race in mid-October is a pointless endeavor.  The mainstream media hypes the unbeaten teams and the elite level programs among the Power 5 conferences – that’s what boosts ratings, what the general public seems to be interested in.

But we all know that the teams that look elite in mid-October aren’t necessarily the teams that look elite when the pressure ratchets up in November and beyond.  Look no further than last year at this time, when teams like Auburn, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Oklahoma all were ranked as Top 10 teams; championship contenders.  Those four teams finished the season with 19 losses between them, each team suffering at least four SU losses AFTER Week 7 of the season.

So here we are in 2015.  Ohio State has been ranked #1 since the preseason, and since the Buckeyes haven’t lost in SU fashion, they remain #1.  Michigan State opened as the #5 team in the country (AP Top 25; they were #6 in the coaches poll).  Currently, the Spartans rank #4 in the coaches poll and #7 in the AP poll, another team that the pundits have been Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Purdue Boilermakers

Minnesota at Purdue
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Purdue pk O/U 47
CRIS Current: Minnesota -3.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Purdue

The betting markets play very close attention to NFL injuries, with the lines swinging fairly significantly on gameday based on player availability.  But in college football, the betting markets only seem to react significantly when there is a quarterback injury that sidelines an effective starter.  That’s how we see lines like this one, with Minnesota as road favorites as they travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue this Saturday.

The Gophers have a third-year starter at QB in Mitch Leidner.  But Leidner has been completely ineffective – only 91 completed passes for 950 yards and four TD’s in their first five games of the season – because of the injuries surrounding him.  He’s not fully healthy either.  Head coach Jerry Kill: “He’s been beat up. You get hit — and we’ve been beat up on the offensive line — and he’s taken some shots. And you take those kinds of Read more
