NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Buffalo
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Buffalo -3 O/U 44
CRIS Current: Buffalo -4.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Miami

The betting markets seem fixated by the series history here.  Yes, Rich Stadium has been a house of horrors in recent years for Miami.  The Dolphins lost by 16 on this field last year, by 19 in 2014 and by 19 in 2013, part of a 1-7 SU run here in Buffalo.  I couldn’t care less about the series history here.  This year’s Dolphins team is better than any recent version; not an apples to apples comparison.

And the markets are convinced that Miami won’t bring their ‘A’ game to this cold weather venue.  But gametime temperatures are expected to be above freezing, and Miami certainly didn’t look all that negatively affected by much nastier conditions in New Jersey against the Jets last Saturday.  It is worth noting that Miami played on Saturday last week – they’ve got a normal prep week, while the Bills are on a short week.

The markets focus on stats, and Buffalo has a solid statistical Read more

Quick Lane Bowl Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Boston College Eagles

Maryland vs. Boston College
Quick Lane Bowl - Detroit, Mich.
Thursday, 11:30 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Boston College pk O/U 45
CRIS Current: Maryland -2.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Boston College/Under

Projected snooze fest as Maryland (88th) and Boston College (115th) boast well below average offensive capabilities. Passing has been a major problem for the Terps (174.0 ypg) and the Eagles (144.2 pypg) which has placed an extreme burden on their respective ground games. Maryland has shown flashes of being a strong rush team and if you remove its sack yardage, the ypc average comes out to a solid 5.59. Boston College hasn’t found any success on the ground and they only averaged 4.0 ypc or more in three of 12 games (Georgia Tech, Wagner and Syracuse). Defensively however, BC has the big edge with the 8th ranked total defense, 8th ranked rush defense, and 32nd ranked pass defense.

While the overall statistical numbers do not show much separation between these teams, there is one fundamental aspect that could be a difference maker. Throughout the season it has been evident Read more

NFL Gambling News: Bettors should avoid the Minnesota Vikings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I looked at betting strategies for two AFC teams the remainder of the season. We pegged Kansas City as “bet against” and Pittsburgh “bet on” as both teams delivered with the Chiefs losing outright at home to Tennessee and the Steelers getting the win and cover at Cincinnati. This week we’ll use the same format but turn our attention to the NFC.

The Detroit Lions’ lead in the NFC North fell to just one game following their 17-6 loss at New York and Green Bay’s win at Chicago. New York’s defense is an elite-level unit but Detroit was able to move the football at times and actually outgained the Giants 324-300. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were on the wrong end of some bad bounces with a -2 turnover margin including a key fumble inside New York’s 5-yard line. I however came away impressed with the Lions’ defense as it held its eighth straight opponent to 20 points or less. Sunday’s somewhat misleading result may provide residual betting value moving forward. We’ve already seen this week’s opponent, Dallas, take early money with Detroit now +7.5 road underdogs after opening +7. Read more

Appalachian State vs. Toledon
Camellia Bowl - Montgomery, Ala.
Saturday, 2:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Toledo -1.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Toledo -1 O/U 57.5
Recommendation: Appalachian State

Appalachian State won the Camellia Bowl last year with a narrow 31-28 triumph over Ohio. It was the Mountaineers’ first ever bowl appearance at the FBS level. Toledo are playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game having won the previous three. Both clubs enter this game with identical 9-3 records. Two of Appalachian State’s losses coming against power five clubs; Tennessee and Miami (FL). The Mountaineers nearly pulled off a big upset in Knoxville, eventually losing in overtime. After the home blowout to the Hurricanes, the Mountaineers ripped off six consecutive wins and eight of their last nine to clinch a share of the Sun Belt title. Toledo finished second in the MAC West just behind undefeated Western Michigan. They played a relatively easy schedule with their toughest non-conference opponent being BYU on the road (55-53 loss). Both teams are led by strong running backs; Kareem Hunt for Toledo, Read more

College Football Betting: Tennessee says it's motivated to play in postseason

12.13.2016     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For most bowl games, motivation is a key factor. And for most teams, it's common to claim they are motivated. Tennessee is one of those squads as they take on Nebraska in the Music City Bowl. The Volunteers had their sights set on bigger things, most recently the SEC Championship. But an embarrassing loss to rival Vanderbilt in the regular season finale ended that hope. UT will play a Big Ten squad for the third straight year. In 2014 they blew out Iowa 45-28 and last season hammered Northwestern 45-6.

“Some of them don’t want to be here,” Nutt observed. “They want to be someplace else. They’re not mentally focused on this game, this week, playing the University of Minnesota.

“The result was we got beat.”

“Obviously, we did not finish the way we wanted to finish and that’s unacceptable in our program and I take responsibility for that

The Pittsburgh Steelers are starting to look like that scary team nobody wants to see in the playoffs. They’ve won and covered four straight and have surged ahead of Baltimore for top spot in the AFC North. The health of Ben Roethlisberger and Le’Veon Bell has played a role in the team’s recent run but the real storyline has been the defense. Pittsburgh has held each of its last two opponents (NY Giants and Buffalo Bills) to below 300 total yards and surrendered 20 or fewer points in all four victories. The Steelers have a very favorable schedule to wrap up the regular season with three very winnable divisional games. They’re currently -3 road favorites at near-dead Cincinnati on Sunday followed by two straight home games against Baltimore and Cleveland. Baltimore will likely be the toughest test of those three. Roethlisberger was very rusty in his first game back from injury (67.3 QB rating) when the Steelers fell to the Ravens in Baltimore, 21-14, back in Week 9. Pittsburgh has been a “bet on” team in both the public and sharp betting communities and they’ve rewarded both groups with an 8-5 ATS mark. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Detroit Pistons at Charlotte Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Charlotte -5 O/U 202
Recommendation: Charlotte

Let me start with the basic concept here.  Yes, Detroit got their starting point guard Reggie Jackson back on the floor for their last two games after Jackson missed the first six weeks of the season due to injury.  But while getting Jackson back running the point is a good thing for Stan Van Gundy’s squad in the long term, in the short term it does NOT make them a better squad.  For at least the next few games, while Jackson gets re-acclimated with his teammates, the Pistons base power rating number must be lowered, not raised.  Yet the markets have moved in the opposite direction.

Van Gundy, following Jackson’s first game back on the floor, a loss to Orlando: “We were terrible defensively, terrible. We didn’t put enough into it to win the game. They deserved to win. I think most nights we bring a decent effort. But we’ve been just too up and down defensively. We looked really slow tonight.”

Jackson’s quote: “It's going to take some time to get acclimated with my teammates again, but (the knee) felt good. I Read more

NFL Gambling: Buffalo and Carolina appear headed in the wrong direction following Week 13 losses

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Up 24-9 and seemingly on their way to an impressive road win at Oakland, the Buffalo Bills melted down in a big way as the Raiders closed the game with four unanswered touchdowns. The end result was a 38-24 loss which dropped the Bills to 6-6 and put the team in the position of likely needing to “win out” in order to reach the playoffs. As for Sunday’s game, Buffalo led by 15 points midway through the third quarter behind a bend-but-don’t-break defense that held Oakland to three field goals. But the defense wilted and Oakland started moving the football with ease as Derek Carr hit on multiple big plays to Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. Buffalo’s 24-9 lead turned into a 30-24 deficit with the nail in the coffin coming when Tyrod Taylor was hit as he threw the football from his own end zone and the ball was picked off giving Oakland instant field position en route to yet another touchdown. The Bills are now two games behind the final Wild Card spot in the AFC. Their schedule to finish the season is manageable with three home games in a row as they host Pittsburgh this week followed by Cleveland and Miami. They close out the regular season Read more

College Football Gambling: Alabama heavy favorites against the field

11.30.2016     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's logical to assume that no matter what the matchup, Alabama would be favored over any team in the country. Bovada and Las Vegas' South Point and sportsbooks offered their opinions on mythical matchups involving the Crimson Tide. Only Bovada priced Alabama below a touchdown (-4 vs. Ohio State, -6 vs. Washington). The Westgate hung the most pro-Bama line in six of the eight matchups.
