Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFC News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re into November, just past the halfway point of the 2014 NFL season.  The truths that we learned in September aren’t proving to be quite so true now that the season has progressed.  In this week’s wiseguy report, we’ll take a quick tour around the NFC landscape, focusing on some hidden gems of knowledge from around the league.

With their dominating win on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals are now 14-3 SU, 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 ballgames.  Only one of those three losses came by more than a field goal – their game at Denver, when third string rookie QB Logan Thomas was forced into action after injuries to Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.

Yet the Cardinals statistical profile continues to confound wiseguy bettors.  Arizona went into their game at Dallas on Sunday with a -0.6 yards per play differential.  To put that number in perspective, the Oakland Raiders entered the weekend with a - 0.5 yards per play differential, the Jacksonville Jaguars had a -0.7 ypp differential.    And the Cards have been on the lucky end of the turnover equation this year, now +10 for the season after winning the Read more

NBA Gambling Update: Oklahoma City's Westbrook out but upcoming schedule favorable

10.31.2014     08:37 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Things have certainly gone south in a hurry for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant is out, various role players are banged up, and now Russell Westbrook is on the shelf with a broken hand. The betting markets have already shown their anti-Thunder hand with big moves against the team their first two games. Perhaps they can weather the storm until Durant and Westbrook return thanks to a favorable upcoming schedule. From now through mid-December, when the duo is expected to return, the Thunder play 10 games against the Eastern Conference and avoid Western Conference contenders Portland, San Antonio, Dallas, and the Los Angeles Clippers. They also get Houston, Golden State, and Phoenix at home.

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Penn State Nittany Lions

Maryland at Penn State
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Penn State -3 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Penn State -4 O/U 47.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Penn State -4.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Maryland

Not sure what to expect from Penn State following three straight losses including last week's double overtime heartbreaker against Ohio State. The Nittany Lions have now dropped three straight and with each passing week, their lack of offense and depth is being exposed more and more. After losing a pair of seniors to season-ending injuries, PSU is down to a startling 46 scholarship players. The current NCAA guidelines allow teams to have as many 85. Defensively, they've been able to hold up, but it's doubtful they'll be able to match their numbers the rest of the regular season. Offensively, the offensive line is extremely weak with no run-game to speak of (46 ypg vs. Big Ten). It leaves Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the NBA Season O/U Wins market

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Halloween week and the brand spankin’ new NBA season is upon us.  Some things have changed dramatically, most notably Lebron leaving Miami for a return trip to Cleveland.  That sets the books up for a real beating if the Cavs win the title next June since the Cavs opened as high as 60:1 before their enormous talent upgrade.

Other things remain exactly the same, like the fact that the West is much, much stronger than the East, just as it has been since the Bulls run of dominance with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen ended 17 years ago.  Let’s take a look at the upcoming NBA season from a betting perspective.

Other than the Cavs, many of the top contenders for the title remain the same.  The Spurs, Clippers, Thunder and Bulls are the only other teams besides Cleveland to be priced at less than 10:1 to win the title next June; all elite teams from last year.

The top two teams in the East from 2013-24 – Miami and Indiana – both took major offseason hits, with the Heat losing LeBron and the Pacers losing Lance Stephenson to free agency and Paul George to a broken leg.  Oklahoma City, Read more

College Football Betting: Michigan's Brady Hoke well aware of massive pointspread

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More good news. Brady Hoke doesn't gamble. The Wolverines opened +15 and are now +17 across the board.

“Look, the only people who really care about that are gamblers. I don’t gamble,” Hoke said Monday. “That being said, we’ve been the underdogs before, and for us, it’s just going out there and playing football.”

Arizona State -3.5 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: Arizona Sate -3.5 O/U 62
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona State -2
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Arizona State

As of this writing it is still unclear whether Washington QB Cyler Miles (concussion) will be available for this contest. Through Wednesday practice, backup redshirt freshman Troy Williams had taken all the first team snaps and this would be his first ever college start (he went 5-of-10, for 37 yards last week in relief of Miles). In addition, the Huskies’ offensive line and defensive backfield have struggled to date and they’ll face an Arizona State team which is 8-0 against them L8T and will have their starting QB Taylor Kelly back from injury. At 1-2 in Pac-12 play, these are the home games inside the conference that new head coach Chris Petersen was hired to Read more

Michigan at Michigan State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Michigan State -17 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Michigan State -17 O/U 48.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Michigan State -15.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Over

After years of having to rely on defense to win games, Michigan State is now being carried by its offense. The Spartans are averaging 47 ppg including 27+ points in each of their three Big Ten games behind a balanced attack of 260 ypg on the ground and 265 ypg passing. Michigan’s defense is a solid unit but have had very noticeable struggles against the better offensive teams. The Wolverines allowed 26 points to Rutgers, 26 points to Utah, 30 points to Minnesota and 31 points to Notre Dame. Michigan State’s offense is arguably better than all four of those offenses. MSU put up 29 points is last year’s meeting despite still being in the infant stages of Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals

Baltimore at Cincinnati
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati -2.5 O/U 46
CRIS Current: Cincinnati pk O/U 45.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -1.5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Baltimore

My clients and I cashed a winning Big Ticket bet supporting the Bengals in Week 1 on the road at Baltimore.  Cinci dominated that game early, but settled for five first half field goals.  After halftime, the Ravens scored 17 unanswered to take the lead.  But a 77 yard bomb from Andy Dalton to AJ Green in the final minutes allowed the Bengals to escape with a victory on Baltimore’s home field; their first road win over the Ravens since 2009.

But the Bengals team that we saw on opening day is not the same Bengals team that Marvin Lewis is fielding right now.  AJ Green has a bad toe, unable to suit up in their last two ballgames.  TE Tyler Eifert is out as well.  That duo Read more
