NFL Gambling Preview: Denver Broncos at Chicago Bears

Denver at Chicago
Sunday, 10 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Chicago pk O/U 43
CRIS Current: Chicago -1 O/U 41.5
Recommendation: Chicago

The Denver Broncos (7-2) head to the Windy City on Sunday to take on the surging Chicago Bears (4-5). The Broncos suffered their second straight defeat last week in a 29-13 loss the Kansas City Chiefs. The big story in that contest was Peyton Manning surpassing Brett Favre as the NFL's all-time passing yardage leader, only to throw four interceptions on 20 attempts and get benched in favor of Brock Osweiler.  Osweiler threw for two touchdowns well after the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs held Denver's run game in check as well, yielding just 69 yards on the ground on 16 total carries.

Chicago won for the second straight weekend with a 37-13 blowout of the St. Louis Rams. Running back Jeremy Langford was the star of this contest has he picked up 73 yards rushing and 109 yards receiving along with a pair of touchdowns. Tight end Zach Miller also picked up two touchdowns and 107 yards receiving on just five catches; his longest, an 80-yard Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Oregon Ducks

USC at Oregon
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Oregon -3.5 O/U 70
CRIS Current: Oregon -4 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon Ducks are back in the good graces of bettors after winning and covering four straight. Note that two weeks ago, the Ducks closed -3.5 vs. a struggling Cal team and now asked to lay -4 vs. USC. The storyline for Oregon's surge has been its offense. Over the last three games combined, the Duck have averaged over 8 yards per play, including 9.08 against Stanford. Their ability to move the football virtually at will has offset a suspect defense that allowed well over 6 yards per play. But allowing that type of yardage isn't all doom-and-gloom when you're routinely outgaining the opposition. In PAC-12 play, Oregon is an impressive +0.99 ypp.

Under the watch of interim head coach Clay Helton, USC has quietly changed its stripes. Over their last four games all victories the Trojans have Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Updating NFL Regular Season O/U Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I write a lot about NFL Win Totals and NFL Divisional Odds throughout the summer months; my preferred methodology for discussing the upcoming season.  As we approach Thanksgiving, with Week 10 in the books and the final bye weeks coming up this weekend, it’s a good opportunity to take a look at how those wagers are faring heading into the homestretch of the 2015 campaign.

The very first NFL season win bets cashed this past weekend.  Dallas fell to 2-7, ensuring that the Cowboys cannot go Over their 9.5 game win total.  Carolina improved to 9-0, cashing their Over 8.5 win total from last summer.  Seattle fell to 4-5.  Even if the Seahawks win all of their remaining games, they can do no better than push their 11 game win total.

It’s a similar story with Baltimore, sitting at 2-7 now, with a win total of 9 from last summer.  A 7-0 Ravens run to end the season would only produce a push for Over bettors. And while I write this column before Monday Night Football kicks off, the Bengals are in prime position to cash their Over 8.5 win total, 8-0 now and sitting as double digit favorites against the Texans.

College Football Handicapping: Golden Nugget Game of the Year vs. CRIS - Week 12

11.16.2015     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Week 12's breakdown of Golden Nugget's Game of the Year lines vs. CRIS's current numbers. It's a great tool to spot week-to-week changes in perception from oddsmakers and the betting markets. Not uncommon for this late in the season but we have a lot of big pointspread differentials in play. Baylor went from a double-digit road favorite to a small underdog vs. Oklahoma State. Penn State and Michigan basically flip-flopped prices. And weeks in the making but Missouri-Tennessee is more than 10 points off.

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Baylor Bears

Oklahoma at Baylor
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -5 O/U 78
CRIS Current: Baylor -2.5 O/U 76
Recommendation: Baylor

Baylor has a clear path to the four team college football playoff this January.  If the Bears can win their last four games, they’re in, plain and simple.  Of course with Oklahoma at home, then road trips to face TCU and Oklahoma State over the next three games, Baylor’s three toughest tests of the season are coming in back-to-back-to-back weeks.

For a good portion of the season, I had Baylor ranked among the top two or three teams in all of college football in my power ratings.  And I’ve got the Bears homefield edge ranked as high as any in the land, as clearly evidenced by their remarkable 19-4 ATS mark in Waco dating back to the start of the 2012 campaign.  It’s surely worth noting that this is the shortest pointspread that Baylor has had at home since 2012 – they haven’t been less than -7 at home against anybody over the last three seasons.

But two things have happened to make me lower my Baylor Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Michigan State Spartans

Maryland at Michigan State
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Michigan State -18 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Michigan State -15 O/U 57.5
Recommendation: Under

Off of last week's loss to Nebraska, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio proclaimed that his team would indeed bounce back. But before we get to what type of showing Sparty is sitting on this week, know that the defeat in Lincoln shouldn't come as a shock. Yes, Nebraska's season was up until that point a mess, but Michigan State had spent much of the season winning games with some serious smoke and mirrors. Prior to last week, MSU has just a 0.30 ypp advantage on its opponents despite playing an ultra-soft Big Ten schedule. It was all a matter of time before the dam burst.

Now, off their first loss of the season and with Ohio State on deck, the Spartans must get up for a home game against woeful Maryland. The markets, as they have all season, poured in with anti-MSU money with the line down from -18 to -15. I can hardly blame them as team vying for playoff berths that suffer late season losses are a logical fade. And while Sparty can Read more

NFL Gambing Preview: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

Kansas City at Denver
Sunday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Denver -7 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: Denver -6 O/U 42
Recommendation: Over

Things change quickly in the NFL and there’s a different feel about Denver than there was just four days ago when they were 7-0. Obviously the loss to Indianapolis which was the late afternoon national game drew a lot of viewers. That negative perception of the Broncos combined with the losses of star defensive players DE DeMarcus Ware (back) and CB Aqib Talib (suspension) have taken the opening line of -7 down to -6 or even -5.5 depending on the outlet. Kansas City meanwhile is rested off of a bye and two consecutive victories prior to it. There’s certainly a sense of atonement in the Chiefs locker room after the unbelievable way they gift wrapped their Week 2 contest to Denver so expect them to be as motivated as possible for this divisional rematch.

Denver’s defense looked average for the first time last week and without a pair of their top players, it may make this week a bit difficult too.The Broncos like to apply consistent pressure up Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The College Football Playoff circus has begun

11.09.2015     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I haven’t had an appropriate opportunity to rant against the most corrupt organization in sports – the NCAA, making billions off the backs of student athletes without a lick of oversight – in quite some time.  But now that we’re in Playoff Committee time here in November, it’s time to call out the NCAA for this ridiculous atrocity, designed to do one thing and one thing only – make the NCAA more money, by driving up the hype factor of the college football playoff.  You know, the playoff that doesn’t begin until January?  You know, the playoff that has a constantly-hyped national TV show every week, designed to get fat checks from corporate sponsors?   Yeah, that college football playoff!

Can you imagine, even for a minute, if the NFL held a mid-season poll so that a group of high profile bureaucrats, administrators and big name celebrities (does Condoleezza Rice really know the in’s and out’s of college football) could vote on who the top teams were?  Of course you can’t imagine such a thing, because it’s a ludicrous concept.  If these polls never existed, there would be Read more

College Football Handicapping: Markets push Illinois into historically bad spot

11.06.2015     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We need to talk about the Illinois-Purdue pointspread for a minute. To start, the game opened a pick 'em with the Illini taking most of the early money with the line trickling up to -2. The move was understandable as the Illini have the more attractive statistical profile (-0.76 ypp vs. Big Ten) compared to the Boilermakers (-1.57 ypp). But yesterday’s -2 turned quickly into -5 putting Illinos in some rarified air. They've been favored in 10 Big Ten games since 2011 only twice since 2013 and both of which were against Purdue. Their track record in that profile is nothing short of horrific. Check out the results...

2014
-10 vs. Purdue - SU Loss, ATS Loss

2013
-6.5 at Purdue - SU Win, ATS Loss

2012
-2 vs. Indiana - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-3 vs. Penn State - SU Loss, ATS Loss

2011
-9.5 vs. Northwestern - SU Win, ATS Loss
-14 at Indiana - SU Win, ATS Win
-3.5 vs. Ohio State - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-3 at Purdue - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-1 vs. Michigan - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-10 at Minnesota - SU Loss, ATS Loss
