College Football Betting Preview: Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa at Iowa State
Saturday, 1:45 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Iowa -4.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Iowa -3.5 O/U 52.5
Recommendation: Under

From a historical perspective, it's interesting that this weekend's Iowa-Iowa State game is totaled at 52.5 (opened 54). The two squads obviously play one another each season and over the last 10 seasons, not one game was lined above 49.5. Taking it a step further, of those 10 games, not once did the score top 48 in regulation. And there's a logical reason for this: Iowa, who is usually the stronger of the two teams, tends to play at a slow pace with a focus on running the football.

The question now becomes, has anything changed with either squad to warrant the inflated total? Neither squad is tremendous defensively, though as we saw last season, when healthy and at full strength, the Hawkeyes have the ability to be above average. Over its first five games last year, Iowa allowed 17.2 ppg. It wasn't until they started playing capable and sometimes dynamic offenses that the unit was exposed. I'm not sure Iowa State qualifies as dynamic. Despite playing in a number Read more

College Football Betting Update: Penn State shows no sign of o-line improvement

09.08.2015     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

So much for an improvement. Penn State made shoring up its offensive line a top priority after 2014's disaster. We won't lay all the blame on the unit during Week 1's loss to Temple, but it certainly was as major issue. The Owls completely dominated the Nittany Lions in the trenches with 10 sacks and only 2.9 yards per carry allowed. PSU has now allowed 54 sacks over its last 14 games.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL regular season starts on Thursday.  Here’s how I have the 32 teams ranked heading into the campaign, with a quick blurb each squad.

1. New England Patriots - With Tom Brady set to open the season as the starting quarterback, the defending champs are the team to beat, worthy of my #1 ranking heading into the regular season.

2. Seattle Seahawks - Seattle enjoyed the best yards-per-rush differential between offense and defense last year, but they’ve got significant offensive line question marks as they head to St Louis for Week 1.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers passing game was second to none in the NFL last year, but the loss of Jordy Nelson leaves Aaron Rodgers without his top target for the entire season.

4. Indianapolis Colts - Most elite contenders face a tougher than average schedule because they’ve got to face other contending teams.  Indy, however, plays only four games against playoff teams from last year.

5. Denver Broncos - Peyton Manning is the oldest starting quarterback in the NFL by a wide margin, and he’s coming off a season where his arm strength noticeably declined down the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Texas at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -8.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -9 O/U 49
Recommendation: Under

The theme of the entire offseason for Texas was the adoption of a new "up-tempo" system. This after the Longhorns averaged 337.3 ypg of total offense in 2014. It's a logical choice considering the current climate of college football and the Big XII in particular but not every move to up-tempo yields instant results like what we witnessed with TCU. Initial reports suggest that the Longhorns aren't really changing the playbook but rather attempting to play at a faster pace. Either way, expect some early season growing pains. And it's not just the offense you worry about. Typically when teams decide more plays and possessions is the route to go, the defense tends to suffer. And defense was the sole reason why Texas was halfway competitive last season.

It was a tale of two seasons for Notre Dame's defense last season. Aided by health, depth, and a favorable slate in terms of opponents' offensive potency, the Irish had the look of a top 10 unit. But Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Wisconsin vs. Alabama (at Dallas)
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -9.5 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -12 O/U 49
Recommendation: Under

Wisconsin has gone through a major transformation since the last time the Badgers took the field; an overtime win against Auburn in the Outback Bowl.  Head coach Gary Anderson left Madison for Corvallis, leaving the program in the hands of Paul Chryst, who went 19-20 in three years as the head coach at Pitt.  Chryst has brought in a new offensive coordinator, Joe Rudolph.

A new coach and a new offense is only one piece of the puzzle for the Badgers.  Yes, Wisconsin returns senior quarterback Joel Stave, but Stave is a game manager on a good day, a long way from being an elite level QB.  Last year, he completed only 110 passes, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.  Wisconsin’s receiving corps isn’t littered with playmakers, and they’ve got a big void to fill at running back, with Melvin Gordon going in the first round of the NFL draft.

But the biggest problem for Wisconsin heading into this Read more

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Jets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia -5 at NY Jets O/U 44.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

It’s not hard to make a case for the Eagles in any preseason game.  After all, Philly is 3-0 SU and ATS in the preseason this year, scoring 36 or more points in every game.  Last year, they scored 28+ in every game as well, a consistent offensive juggernaut here in August.   They beat the Jets 37-7 in their preseason finale last year, hanging 568 yards of offense in the process.  And there’s ample reason to expect a similar result tonight.

Let’s start with the fact that the Jets are likely to be a no-show this evening.  First year head coach Todd Bowles isn’t expected to play starters, and his second and third teamers will be playing special teams as well as trying to keep up with Philly’s fast pace:  Bowles:  "It’s going to be tough because they have to play special teams as well as play their position.  So there’s going to be a lot of heavy breathing, but you have to focus in on your assignment and...I want to see if these guys can play."

The Jets have won each of their Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals vs. Auburn Tigers

Louisville vs. Auburn (at Atlanta)
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Auburn -10.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Auburn -10.5 O/U 56
Recommendation: Under

The Louisville Cardinals and the Auburn Tigers will meet on Saturday in one of the marquee Week 1 matchups.  Both teams will not have to travel far in this neutral site ACC vs. SEC matchup, in fact Auburn playing as the double-digit favorite will only have to make the short 110 mile trip up I-85.  Louisville will attempt to pull off the upset led by its stingy defense that gave up 21.8 points per game and less than 3.3 yards per rush attempt in 2014. The Louisville critics point out that they are only returning four defensive starters, however all four are part of the front seven and three transfers including former Big XII Defensive POY Devonte Fields will make an immediate impact. Both teams have two of the most respected defensive coordinators in the country in Will Muschamp and Todd Grantham. With the addition of Fields and Carl Lawson for Auburn, the talent level rises exponentially on the defensive side of the ball as these are two Read more

College Football Betting Preview: BYU Cougars at Nebraska Cornhuskers

BYU at Nebraska
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -6 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Nebraska -7 O/U 63
Recommendation: BYU

A lot of mystery with this matchup as both BYU and Nebraska have suspended multiple players yet neither school, as of Wednesday, has revealed who exactly they are. Reports indicate the Cougars could be without one of their top pass rushers and starting center but again, nothing has been made official.

As for the game, the main storyline is Nebraska's coaching turnover. Despite only one winning regular season since 2010, former Oregon State coach Mike Riley was hired to replace Bo Pelini who won nine or 10 games in all seven seasons in Lincoln. Riley brought win him both OC Danny Langsford and DC Mark Banker. Riley's a good coach and didn't have the resources in Corvallis Pelini was afforded. However I have questions whether or not Riley can get Nebraska to the "next level." I tend to downgrade teams following such mass offseason changes, especially to start the season. Personnel and talent-wise, the Cornhuskers (15 returning starters) appear to be on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Virginia Cavaliers at UCLA Bruins

Virginia at UCLA
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -17 O/U 54
CRIS Current: UCLA -19.5 O/U 53
Recommendation: Over

Back end of this home-and-home series comes with very high expectations for one side and for the other, a head coach immediately on the hot seat. Last season’s game in Charlottesville saw UCLA close as a large -18.5 road favorites and struggled mightily to escape with a 28-20 win. In that game, Virginia trailed 21-10 at the half but was able to make some solid defensive adjustments and their experienced pass rushers swarmed Brett Hundley en-route to a five sack afternoon. The Cavaliers actually outgained UCLA in that contest 386-358 and held the Bruins to 4.9 yards per play which was their second lowest output of the 2014 campaign (only defensively stout Stanford held them to less). So the question is, can Virginia repeat that performance and cash another ticket? The pointspread for Saturday’s game is very similar but there are some significant fundamental differences this time around so let’s take a look.

First up is the Bruins’ shift at QB Read more
