NFL Handicapping: Pittsburgh's defense shows vulnerability vs. no-huddle

09.11.2014     02:30 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh at Baltimore -2.5 O/U 44.4

In the second half of last week's non-spread covering win over Cleveland, the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense struggled against the no-huddle. Pittsburgh is expecting tonight's opponent, Baltimore, to utilize it as well.

"What we've shown is if you want to huddle and play against us we'll do fine, but this no-huddle (offense) has given us some problems," Troy Polamalu said, per the team's official website. "We have to do something to rectify that. Coach LeBeau is the genius of all defensive coordinators, and he'll figure it out."

"I certainly do," he said. "Our two worst games, no doubt, have been against a hurry-up deal. So we're going to see it until we handle it."

Monmouth Park more than a month away from launching fully operational sportsbook

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Running an legal sportsbook isn't something you can whip together overnight. So while the it was cool to chat about Monmouth Park taking bets on NFL Week 2, the reality is it's going to take time. From the sound of it, they don’t even have internet yet.

"We really weren't set up to launch properly," he said. "We already spent $1 million on our William Hill sports book. We have the room ready to go but technically we need phone lines, Internet lines and we need to hire 111 people to help operate the book. You don't want to launch something as important as sports betting without doing it right."

NFL Gambling Preview: Dallas Cowboys at Tennessee Titans

Dallas at Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -3 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Tennessee -3 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tennessee -1.5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Tennessee

Much has been made of the Dallas Cowboys’ struggling defense and with good reason. They were terrible last year and lost several key players including MLB Sean Lee and DE Demarcus Ware in the offseason as well as CB Orlando Scandrick for the first four games due to a suspension. Last week they took another hit with weakside linebacker Justin Durant going down against San Francisco. He will be replaced by rookie Anthony Hitchens in the lineup this week against the Titans. Durant’s play-calling duties will now be handled by strongside linebacker Bruce Carter.

While the defensive issues are very much a factor for the Cowboys, the offense has come concerns as well. The expectation was that Dallas would be very Read more

NFL Betting News: Houston's O'Brien wants offense to pick up pace

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -3 at Oakland O/U 39.5

Great article on Houston head coach Bill O'Brien's desire to play at a faster clip. In Week 1, the Texans ran only 56 plays en route to a 17-6 win over Washington. Playing with more tempo won't happen overnight. O'Brien's offense is fairly sophisticated, hence why Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick was tabbed the starting quarterback. Interesting to note that in O'Brien's first season at Penn State, the Nittany Lions went under the total in each their first four games. They then closed the season on a 7-1 run to the OVER.

“We need to have more up-tempo,” head coach O’Brien said on Wednesday. “There’s different definitions of up-tempo. I’m not talking about necessarily going warp speed all the time. I’m just saying, we’ve got to get into a better rhythm and Read more

NFL Handicapping: Jets prep for Packers' up-tempo attack

09.11.2014     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York Jets at Green Bay -8 O/U 46

The New York Jets spent much of the week preparing for Green Bay's up-tempo offense. The Packers had said they want to run as many as 75 plays per game. Denver was the fastest team in the league last year at 72.1 ppg.

“Everybody has to be in shape and know exactly what you’re doing,” said Jets nose tackle Damon Harrison. “When you get tired and you’re in better shape, you don’t resort back to old, bad habits. If you’re a guy that’s in shape, the quick tempo shouldn’t bother you that much. It’s always tough for defensive linemen when guys are running the hurry-up offense. But I think we’ll be fine.”

NFL Gambling Preview: Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers

Seattle at San Diego
Sunday, 1 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -5 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Seattle -6 O/U 44
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Seattle -5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Seattle

The recent history of defending Super Bowl Champions has not been a good one.  No team since the New England Patriots following their 2003 Super Bowl title has even won a single playoff game the following season. The last two defending champs – the Giants and Ravens – failed to make the playoffs the year after their title.

But Seattle is a different animal compared to recent Super Bowl champs.  Three things make the Seahawks different.  First, their coaching staff didn’t get raided this past offseason, as they return both coordinators.  The historical norm is that Super Bowl winning teams tend to lose some of their coaching talent in the offseason, but there’s full continuity for the Read more

NFL Gambling News: Vegas sportsbooks make out like bandits in Week 1

09.10.2014     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big opening week in the NFL for Las Vegas sportsbooks as multiple "ugly" underdogs cashed tickets.

“This was the best opening day we’ve ever had here,” said Golden Nugget sports book director Tony Miller. “Just about every game we needed came through for us beginning with our biggest, the Falcons, and then the rest just followed suit like the Browns, Dolphins and then the Panthers. It wasn’t a good day for those that bet parlays on the afternoon.”

“There was so much public money on Denver and even when I raised it higher than the market number, I was still getting action on them with limit straight bets and parlays,’ said Miller. “They couldn’t get enough of Denver.”

NFL Betting News: Eagles' offensive line short on healthy bodies

09.09.2014     02:47 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Indianapolis -3 O/U 53

Injury concerns for Philadephia's offensive line following all-Pro left guard Evan Mathis' MCL tear. He's out indefinately along with right tackle Allen Barbre (ankle). Barbre was filling in for Lane Johnson who is currently serving a four-game suspension. All told, the Eagles have six healthy linemen.
