SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A bunch of injuries to be aware of for the Minnesota Vikings defense heading into Sunday's game vs. Chicago. Minnesota is currently a -5.5 favorite with a total of 43.

Three starters were held out of practice Wednesday: defensive tackle Linval Joseph (foot), linebacker Anthony Barr (groin/hand) and defensive end Everson Griffen (shoulder). Griffen's injury had not previously been reported. Eight defensive players appeared on the injury report, including five starters.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL quarterback situations late season theme for bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL is a quarterback driven league, and QB play (both good and bad) was the difference in the vast majority of games played this past weekend.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll take an overview of some of the ongoing QB situations in the NFL.  The goal?  Identify undervalued and overvalued quarterbacks (and therefore, teams) to wager on or against during the stretch run of the season.

Let’s start with the biggest injury of the weekend, when Cincinnati Bengals star Andy Dalton went down with a thumb injury after making a tackle following a red zone interception on the Bengals first drive.  Dalton has developed a well-deserved reputation as a bet-on QB in the regular season, despite his repeated postseason failures.  This has been, by far, his best year as a pro.  Dalton had a 106.3 QB rating when he got hurt, well above his previous career best of 88.8.  He’d thrown a career low seven interceptions and averaged a career high 8.4 yards per attempt, spreading the ball around to Cinci’s bevy of skill position weapons.  It’s an impact injury, for sure!

NFL Handicapping: Green Bay's McCarthy returns to play calling duty

12.14.2015     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It looks as if Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy is back to calling plays. McCarthy put assistant Tom Clements in charge during the offseason but was dissatisfied with the offense of late. In Sunday's 28-7 win over Dallas, the Packers ran the ball 44 times for 230 yards.

"The decision was made because I feel as a leader of this football team, I had to make sure I maximize all the opportunities and resources and give our team a chance to win," McCarthy said after his offense came to life in a 28-7 victory over Dallas Sunday. "Personally, it didn't feel very good. It didn't feel good at all.

"That's the challenge with these types of decisions. But professionally, it was what I felt I needed to do."

"When you can be efficient running the football and set up some manageable situations you have some more opportunities to have some clean pockets," Rodgers said. "We ran some passes from under center, which we hadn't done in a while. All of that kind of starts with the run

NFL Gambling Preview: New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans at Tampa Bay
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Tampa Bay -4.5 O/U 50.5
CRIS Current: Tampa Bay -4.5 O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

The Saints offense is built for the fast track of the Superdome.  On the highway, Drew Brees and his colleagues have averaged only 17.5 points per game.  To put that number in perspective, the Saints have scored 38, 28, 52, 31 and 26 in their last five home games, but they managed only 20 points combined in their last two road contests, ugly blowout losses at Houston and Washington.

And the Saints offense is riddled with key injuries.  Drew Brees is healthy, but his supporting cast is not.  New Orleans has lost underrated RB Mark Ingram (4.6 yards per carry and 50 catches out of the backfield), leaving tired retread Tim Hightower to shoulder the running load this week.  Wide receiver Brandin Cooks has not yet passed his concussion protocol, no sure thing to suit up on Sunday.  Willie Snead has been sidelined with a calk injury.  And Marques Colston has been limited all year, not the pass catching force he was Read more

NFL Handicapping: St. Louis Rams make switch at offensive coordinator

12.10.2015     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After back-to-back win and covers out of the bye week, St. Louis looked to be a potential playoff contender at 4-3. But following an overtime loss to Minnesota, the wheel have officially come off. The Rams have lost five straight (0-4-1 ATS) and averaged only 10.8 ppg during that span. So what now? Well, why not change things up. Tight ends coach Rob Boras, who hasn't called plays in over a decade, was promoted to offensive coordinator this week. You know things are bad when you open as a -1.5 home favorite vs. Detroit and now find yourself catching +2.5.

“I’d be lying if I said no,” Boras said after directing his first practice on Wednesday. “It’s not going to be perfect. Football isn’t perfect.”

“I don’t know how much can change,” Boras said. “We have different thoughts but we’re pretty far down the road right now.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFC News, Notes, and Quotes

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFC Playoff picture got a whole lot clearer following Week 13, as numerous contenders took a hit.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll take a look at some notes and quotes from a handful of those losers from Sunday in an effort to gauge their competitive spirit moving forward.

Let’s start in New Jersey, where the New York Giants just lost four the fourth time in their last five games.  This time, the G-Men blew a double digit fourth quarter lead against the Jets, losing in overtime when Josh Brown missed his first field goal attempt in 26 tries this season.  Six of the Giants seven losses have come in winnable games; by six points or less, and this defeat marked the fifth time this season that they’ve blown a fourth quarter lead.

Some of the criticism is downright ridiculous.  Head coach Tom Coughlin is taking ‘Monday Morning Quarterback’ type heat for his decision to go for it on fourth and two from the Jets four yard line with under nine minutes to play in regulation.  Eli Manning threw an interception on the play; the Jets seized the momentum and went on to win the game.
