NFL Betting News: Oddsmaker says 49ers will take more money

01.10.2014     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco -1 at Carolina O/U 41

LVH oddsmaker Jay Kornegay says he expects San Francisco money at some point with a chance for the line to go to -3. We saw similar move late last week as the 49ers opened -2.5 and closed as high as -3.5 at Green Bay.

“I thought this thing would have a chance to go to 3 like we saw on the Packers game, and I still think we might see that,” Kornegay told The Linemakers on Sporting News. “Those who took Carolina plus 1 or 1.5 might have jumped the gun a little bit because they’ll probably get a better number closer to kickoff.”

NFL Gambling: Betting markets spent nearly entire season fading the Indianapolis Colts

01.10.2014     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you follow the NFL betting markets, you're well aware of its distaste for the Indianapolis Colts. Bettors considered last year's 11-5 SU/ATS mark to be fraudulent and were hell-bent on cashing in on the correction. It looked like a lucrative move as the Colts failed to cover in Weeks 1 and 2. It didn’t last however as Indy outpaced the market once again with a current run of 11-4 ATS. Ironically, after Weeks 1 and 2, in which the Colts took money based on CRIS's opening and closing numbers, they went 14 straight weeks without doing so. In four different weeks, the opening and closing numbers were the same. Which leaves 10 games (seven straight) in which the market faded this squad. This week, we've yet to see much of an anti-Colts push as CRIS opened +7-110 and currently shows a slight lean juice-wise towards New England. However, based on the market's track record with Indy, it seems likely at some point that 7.5 will be the prevailing number.

NFL Handicapping: Drive Point Averages Divisional Round

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Before getting to the drive point averages and estimated market Power Ratings, I wanted to point something that I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere yet in playoff coverage. Maybe it’s been mentioned…it’s not like I see everything out there. But, I don’t get the sense that much is being made of this reality yet in the NFC brackets.

*The four remaining NFC teams saw a lot of each other this year

*They played nothing but grinders against each other

It wasn't much of a secret during the year that Seattle, San Francisco, Carolina, and New Orleans were the top four teams in the NFC. There was debate about how the last three rated amongst each other. Some computer places fell too much in love with Philadelphia’s penchant for running up the stats against a soft schedule. And, Arizona may have crashed the party in some circles. But, the “big four” were pretty clear, and kept running into each other because the NFC South played the Read more

NFL Betting News: Carolina's Rivera says underdog status means no pressure

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco -1 at Carolina O/U 42

Carolina head coach Ron Rivera not only pulled out the underdog card but tried to downplay his team's 10-9 win at San Francisco back in Week 10 by saying the Panthers "caught them at a good time." Odds choice of words considering the 49ers were at home off of a bye week. We've seen Sunday's line bounce back and forth. San Fran opened -1 and was bet up to -2. Yesterday, most offshore sportsbooks had the game a pick 'em. And today we've seen some 49ers money with the line back up to -1 (-1.5 at CRIS).

“It’s kind of funny,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Being the underdog takes the pressure off us and pouts the pressure on them. Now the expectations are for them. We’re at home, we’re going to show up and do the best we can. It’s a big week, we know it is Read more

NFL Handicapping: Mild but potentially wet weather for Divisional Round

01.08.2014     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is Wednesday so handicapping the weather for this weekend is notoriously risky. However, it looks like the nation-wide deep freeze will have passed as temperatures expect to be very mild for all four Divisional Round matchups. Rain is expected in Seattle and Foxboro.

Saturday games
Seattle - 1:30 pm local
Mid-to-high 40's, 100% chance of rain, winds up to 20 mph

New England - 8:15 pm local
High 40's, 60% chance of rain, winds 10-15 mph

Sunday games
Carolina - 1 pm local
High 50's, no chance of rain, winds 5-10 mph

Denver - 2:30 pm local
High 40's, 10% chance of rain, winds 12-17 mph

NFL Playoff Gambling: Sportsbooks offer differing opinions on Indianapolis-New England

01.07.2014     12:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting line move at Grande for Saturday's Indianapolis-New England game. Grande, which is commonly referred to as a "leading indication sportsbook" has moved its line six times – all towards the Indy side. Grande opened the Colts +7.5-10 and from there dropped to +7.5-15, +7.5-20, +7.5-25, +7ev, and to its current number of +7-25. That number is a far cry from Las Vegas shops like LVH and William Hill that offer 7.5-110. CRIS has also shown respect for the Colts; opening +7-110 and yet to move off the key number to +7.5.

Each game is its own separate entity but as pointed out on today's Sportsmemo Podcast by handicapper Teddy Covers the statistical discrepancy between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers based on their two regular season meetings was minimal. In Week 10, Denver (-7) won and covered 28-20 in San Diego. In Week 15, San Diego (+10) won outright, 27-20. Below are the combined numbers from both games.

Reche Caldwell busted for gambling ring

01.06.2014     12:09 PM     Printer Friendly
On Sunday Tampa Bay authorizes took down a local bookmaking operation involving former Florida and NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell. In the raid, the cops confiscated cash, handguns, and drugs. Not the first Gator to run into trouble with gambling. Anyone remember Teddy Dupay?

NFL Handicapping: Divisional Round Betting Trends

01.06.2014     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Couple of betting trends for this weekend's NFL Divisional games. Since 2003, there have been 11 instances of a playoff rematch after a regular season game was decided by 20 points or more. Seattle beat New Orleans 34-7 in Week 13. The team that lost by 20 or more is 4-7 SU and 7-4 ATS in the playoffs. Also note, nine of those 11 games went over the total. We also looked up how playoff teams fared in the second of back-to-back road games. Teams in that spot have gone 14-20 SU but a healthy 20-14 ATS. The Saints, 49ers, and Chargers are in that spot this weekend.
