Phil Hellmuth: D.C. poker could work, though better suited for casual player

08.23.2011     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Out promoting his new IPhone poker app, Phil Hellmuth weighed in on the current online gambling situation in Washington, D.C.

“I still think that people are looking for a place to play poker and it wouldn’t be surprising if you had a lot more players than you think start playing,” he said. “It’s a nice test, sure, but I think there’s so few people [in D.C.], 600,000, that you might not achieve critical mass for players on the site under those conditions.”

“The states have to ask themselves, how are they going to make money? Are they going to invest millions in software, hire a bunch of people and end up in a situation where they don’t recoup their money for three or four years?” he said. “Or do they just start taxing it right away, and make decamillions from the Read more

Online poker players seek refuge offshore

08.17.2011     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting article from ESPN about a poker message board designed to assist online players wishing to take up residency outside of the United States so they can continue playing.

"We wanted to launch as close as we could post-WSOP," Spears said. "We figured there would be a lot of guys waiting around and wondering, 'What do I do now? I'm a professional poker player, do I want to start on the circuit or do I want to go somewhere to establish myself and play online again?'"

"Banks are pretty strict," she said. "I can't guarantee that they'll definitely be able to open an account at a specific bank. If they bring all the requirements they should be fine, but it's not like the U.S. where you walk in with your license [and it's all set]. Here you have to answer questions -- it can get complex. … [The banks] have to make sure the money isn't being Read more

Final Table Set at Inaugural Epic Poker League $20K Main Event

08.12.2011     11:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fairway Jay has been on site watching and covering the action for the 20k Main Event of the Epic Poker League. He notes that tournament officials have been very pleased about the positive replies and turnout for the inaugural event. He says that the goal of the league officials is to portray poker as a sport, and to have championship poker as the sporting pinnacle.

The conception, design, and execution of the Set has been a year-long process, sprung from the talents of set designer Steve Bass, television producer David Neal, 441 Productions, Jeffrey Pollack, Annie Duke, and Katherine Kowal. Familiar elements of the ‘Set’ include a hardwood floor, a center-court circular design, Jumbotron-style displays, and coliseum seating

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fairway Jay was recently asked to cover the new Epic Poker League as a successful Las Vegas sports handicapper, poker player and gaming and media partner through Sportsmemo.  Federated Sports + Gaming launched the new Epic Poker League and the PR firm of Rogers and Cowan asked Jay to provide some insight, analysis and coverage from a Las Vegas perspective.  Jay covered the NBC Heads Up Poker Championship at Caesars Palace in March 2011, and he is on site for some of the events and coverage for the new Epic Poker League at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Jay not only talked with the poker players, tournament directors and officials, and other media and poker personnel, but he took his coverage to another level when he won the Media Poker Tournament Event and a $1,500 seat at the Pro/Am Tournament (picture of Jay with EPL commish Annie Duke upper left). Poker pro comes to A-Rod's defense

08.05.2011     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

According to one poker pro, A-Rod wasn't at the cash game in question in which coke, a brawl and cockfighting (we made that last one up) were involved. But that hasn't stopped others from putting A-Rod at the scene of the crime. Tell us if you see something wrong with the quote below.

"I never played with him in a home game, but I know (someone who) witnessed him at one. It was an illegal house game," the source told the newspaper, speaking on the condition of anonymity because "I don't want to get A-Rod in trouble."

Bodog founder says US gearing up for online gambling regulation

08.04.2011     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interview in The Guardian with Bodog founder Calvin Ayre. According to Ayre, the US is "gearing" up to enter (regulate) the industry. This statement comes on the heels of Bodog’s decision to shut its doors to US players at the end of the year. But Ayre, being the savvy business man that he is, claimed the "real" market is in Asia, not North America.

"If you're asking what is going on in the United States, it's clear to me that the United States is gearing itself up to enter this industry," he adds, before turning the conversation around.

Epic Poker League features top 200 players in the world

07.28.2011     12:51 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Epic Poker League officially gets underway this August at Las Vegas' Palms Casino. Commissioner Annie Duke said that it will include the top 200 players in the world based on the Global Poker Index. The EPL signed deals with CBS and Velocity, a new network owned by the Discovery Channel. Pat O'Brien is expected to be the show's host. Interesting that rather than use sponsors such as online poker websites, the EPL will function "out of pocket".

Full Tilt Poker pleads case to avoid public hearing

07.26.2011     06:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Before Full Tilt even argued its case to the Alderney Gambling Control Commission earlier today, it first requested that the hearing be removed from the public eye. Full story from EGaming Review.

“If the hearing was held in public it would deprive the respondents of a fair trial since it would be impossible for me to deliver hearings without prejudice,” Heslop added.

“It is not in the interest of justice that this should be aired in public,” lead lawyer Michael Heslop said to a packed room in the basement of the London Victoria Park Plaza hotel. “There is a real risk that it may be detrimental to these interests and highly prejudicial to this decision.”

Poker pros respond to Full Tilt payout promise

07.25.2011     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
Following Full Tilt Poker's collapse, pros Tom Dwan and Phil Galfond offered $1 million of their own money if FT didn't pay back its players. Three months later and still no resolution in sight, frustrated players are calling out Dwan and Galfond on their original proposal. Obviously $1 million wouldn't even put a dent in the total amount owed.

“Lotsa ppl pming me n messaging on twitter w/o having read up on what I said. If worst case happens I’ll pay in a fair way, and that won’t involve paying individuals jus b/c they messaged me a lot. Timeline was late 2012 I think (or anytime I’m >90%ish of ftp not paying out).

“I think it’s retarded how many people are harassing Tom about his money. He’s the only guy that’s even offered to give back money so stop worrying about him stiffing you when he really doesn’t owe anyone anything. I think it’s Read more

Full Tilt investors not interested in United States market

07.25.2011     06:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Reports surfacing that investors ready to purchase Full Tilt Poker have no interest in the American market but rather UK and Ireland. Full Tilt will go before the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) on Tuesday. Poker Players Alliance vice president Rick Muny feels that AGCC hearing will force Full Tilt to start paying back its American players – believed by some to be in the range of $100 million.

“The purchase includes the family of companies in the UK and Ireland [including marketing and technology company Pocket Kings in Dublin] as well as the Alderney licences,” the source said. It is unclear whether the purchase would also include FTP’s French licence which was also suspended last month.
