Poker News: Player and Full Tilt call out Ivey

06.14.2011     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
A couple of updates from the world of poker. Attendance at the World Series of Poker is up. Poker pro Phil Ivey, who is sitting out this year's event, still thinks Full Tilt is a joke for not playing out its players. Though one fellow player pointed out that Ivey is one of the primary equity holders of the company and his motives were "self-serving." As for Full Tilt, they have reportedly begun to credit funds to affiliate accounts. Individual players have yet to be reimbursed. And finally, Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and John Campbell (R-Calif.) have come out and said they would support Texas Rep Joe Barton's Read more

San Antonio police take down senior citizen bookmaker

06.14.2011     06:22 AM     Printer Friendly
A 67-year old man in San Antonio was arrested Monday for being a "career bookie" according to police. The press release and police quotes make it out to be a multi-million operation that would make any New York mob-run bookmaker blush. We'll let you be the judge.

“All of this was a culmination of a long-term investigation, but all the money you can see here today was a result of the NBA playoffs last night,” Burr said. “This is like a daily job for him. By the evidence that we recovered, we can tell he does this every day. He's very organized in his job here. He is Monday through Friday. He knows exactly who he is going to pay and how much he is going to pay.”

Early bettors show love for Georgia Bulldogs

06.13.2011     07:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the last few years, there haven't been many teams more overrated by the betting marketplace than Georgia. Since 2008, the Bulldogs have accumulated a 15-21-1 against the spread mark including a 7-16-1 tally against the SEC. They are one of only three teams (Clemson, Notre Dame) to have currently gone under their regular season over/under wins total three consecutive seasons. But despite its shortcomings, UGA received a lot of attention from those betting this past weekend’s Golden Nugget GOY lines. Georgia opened a 6.5-point underdog against Boise State for their Week 1 showdown in Atlanta. Within a couple of bets, the Broncos were down to -1.5. The Dawgs opened as a 3.5-point home favorite over Mississippi State but were bet up to -5.5. Florida opened as a field goal favorite for the World’s Largest Cocktail Party but was bet down to -1. And perhaps more a move against Auburn rather than on Georgia, the Bulldogs went from -4.5 to -9 as home chalk against the defending national champs.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Trip to minors should help Volquez

06.12.2011     08:24 AM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy Edinson Volquez – The numbers were dreadful for Volquez before he was sent down to the minors to clean up his mechanics and woeful play.  In 51 innings his ERA ballooned to 6.35 ERA with a staggering 38 walks.  It was clear his command and confidence were wavering.  This scenario is fairly familiar with Volquez returning to the Reds in July of last season after overcoming Tommy John surgery. His command was inconsistent and overall he couldn’t get anyone out on a regular basis. Finally in late August, Volquez lasted just 0.2 innings in San Francisco and was sent down.  But after working with various instructors Volquez returned to the majors in September with sparkling results.  In four starts to close out the regular season Volquez allowed just six runs, and fanned 31 hitters in 28 innings.  In his recent demotion he worked with many of the same instructors who helped him last year with an emphasis on making his mechanics more in-line to the plate in order to help his command.  In his first start back against the Chicago Cubs it certainly looked like mission accomplished with Volquez allowing just one run in seven innings.  We’ll look for a similar turnaround like last season while his inflated seasonal numbers should provide value.

NBA Finals sets up perfectly for in-game wagering

06.10.2011     12:33 PM     Printer Friendly
We came across and article from the Wall Street Journal that mentions how difficult it has been for Dallas and Miami to pull away from one another. But despite the close nature of the series, there have been a fair share of solid runs scattered throughout each game. For bettors who have the ability to bet in-game wagering, the first five games couldn't have been drawn up better – mid-game gaps, close finishes, better adjusted prices, buy low opportunities. We went through Sports Options’ line history archive and listed the best available price for both teams in each game according to Pinnacle. Dallas is a perfect 5-0 ATS with its best live line, while Miami is 3-2 ATS. Obviously taking advantage of the "best of the line" takes timing and is a lot easier said than done. But with every game's closing number in question late in the fourth quarter, in-game betting offers bettors some great opportunities to cash in.

College professor tells NHL bettors something they already knew

Game 5 NHL Stanley Cup Finals (Tied 2-2)
Boston at Vancover -175 O/U 5

A statistics and actuarial science professor from Simon Fraser University researched six years' worth of NHL historical data and betting odds and concluded that the Vancouver Canucks, tied 2-2 with the Boston Bruins, have a 63% chance of winning the Stanley Cup. Sportsmemo handicapper Andrew Lange researched zero years' worth of NHL historical data and betting odds and concluded that the Vancouver Canucks, tied 2-2 with the Boston Bruins, have a 63% chance of winning the Stanley Cup. The difference in efficiency is that Lange just logged onto his Sports Options Odds Service account and saw that the adjusted series price on Vancouver was -175 (i.e. 63%). We need to introduce the professor to the powers of the betting market.

Pinnacle Sports decides to shut down poker room

06.09.2011     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It looks as if Pinnacle will no longer offer online poker as of June 15th.

The Entraction Poker network has advised us that due to recent updates to EU gaming regulation, our current Curacao license is no longer accepted within their network. The steps required to remain within the Entraction Network will necessitate a significant commitment for Pinnacle Poker. Given that our current focus is on developing our leading Sportsbook and Casino products, we have decided not to pursue the necessary changes.

From 5pm (GMT) on June 9th, you will no longer have the ability to transfer funds into the poker room. At midnight (GMT) on Wednesday, June 15th, all access to the Pinnacle Poker Client will be removed.

Please be aware that Pinnacle Sports Poker will not be responsible for any tournament fees incurred, or potential winnings of poker hands currently in-play at the time that we are removed from the Entraction Network.

Movies on Gambling: Rumors of a Rounders sequel

06.09.2011     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
Stupid tourists beware, talks have surfaced that Matt Damon and Edward Norton are working on a script for Rounders 2. The duo reportedly met with producer Harvey Weinstein and a couple of screenwriters from one of the crappy Ocean movies. No word on whether or not Worm’s failed attempts to cash out his Full Tilt account will be a sub-plot.

NBA Handicapping: A look at line moves in the betting market

06.09.2011     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
You don't see a lot of line movement in the NBA this late in the season but we wanted to check in with the accuracy of betting market so far in the series. Based on Pinnacle's lines, the market has been correct on the closing numbers of Games 1 and 3 – both times towards the Miami Heat. In Games 2 and 4, the opening number was the closing number which again illustrates how tight the current market is.

We have seen some fairly significant line movement for tonight's Game 5. Pinnacle opened Dallas -2.5 but money on Miami has the line down to 1.5. Other offshore shops (CRIS, Grande, 5Dimes) are all currently offering -1. Game 5's total should mark the first time in the series that the closing line will be bet down off of the opener. Pinnacle opened at 186 but the market, perhaps finally accepting of the low scoring nature of the series, has hammered it down to its current number of 184.5u-113. Totals bettors should be able to shop around as 184, 184.5 and 185 are available throughout offshore and Las Read more
