UL-Lafayette coach tells team underdogs win outright on a regular basis

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Kent State -8.5 O/U 51

Lafayette first-year head coach Mark Hudspeth uses some betting vernacular to convey to his team that plenty of underdogs win outright on a weekly basis.

"I told these guys this: 'In college football, there are gonna be 60 Division I games on Saturday; there are gonna be 60 teams favored, there are gonna be 60 teams not favored,'" Hudspeth said of his Cajuns. "But I promise you, if you look every week, every week, exactly every week, there are a bunch of teams that are not favored that are winning football games."

NCAAF Gambling Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan Wolverines

CRIS Current Line: Notre Dame -3 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Notre Dame -0.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Notre Dame -1

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: How "must win" can it get for Notre Dame who already appears to be in a state of panic following the switch in starting quarterbacks? I don't think it really matters who starts – both Crist and Rees appear comparable in ability – but what stands out is two weeks ago, Brian Kelly boldly announced that Crist would be the starter "for 13 weeks". That tells us that Kelly is feeling the heat and if he's already losing Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Iowa State determined to make up-tempo offense work

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa -6.5 at Iowa State O/U 43.5

Iowa State narrowly escaped with a 20-19 win last week over respectable FCS foe Northern Iowa. The Cyclones were disappointed with their offensive performance; unable to properly execute the fast pace they worked on heading into the season. A lot of these teams wanting to play up-tempo, Oregon-esque football actually end up less efficient due to a lack of personnel and experience. ISU would seem better suited to shorten the game and keep its suspect defense off the field, especially when asked to step up in class like they will on Saturday.

"I think the tempo was faster," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said Monday. "There was an overall Read more

Rob Veno Power Rating: Nebraska -20.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Nebraska -22

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: Nebraska has never been much of a "bet on" team laying big prices under Bo Pelini (8-12 ATS -10 or more). Last season they weren't even close in games against Idaho, South Dakota, Iowa State and Kansas. A lot of it appears to come down to focus. For example, after a few creampuff wins to open 2010, they go on the road for their Big XII opener laying double-digits and crush Kansas State 48-13. Late in the season, following a tough Read more

College Football ATS Trends: Short line for FIU at Louisville matchup

09.08.2011     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly
Florida International at Louisville -3.5 O/U 48

Friday's matchup between Louisville and Florida International is intriguing in that we have a Sun Belt team lined below a touchdown on the road against a BCS Conference school. We went back over the last five years and found only eight instances (see chart below) in which Sun Belt teams were +7 or less vs. BCS teams. FIU's +3.5 surprisingly wasn't the shortest line; that honor goes to Middle Tennessee who was catching +1 against woeful Minnesota in last year's opener. As for the road, Arkansas State was +2.5 at Louisville two years ago with the Cardinals winning 21-13. Prior to this weekend's game, FIU's shortest lined game against a BCS Conference foe was last year's +12 at Maryland (Terps won 42-28).

NCAAF Betting Notes: SMU Mustangs could be short key o-lineman

09.08.2011     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
UTEP at SMU -18.5 O/U 54.5

Under-the-radar injury for SMU with center Black McJunkin (ankle) not expected to start this weekend against UTEP. Reports indicate that he was in a walking boot for much of the week. In the loss to A&M, the Mustangs were able to run the football with McJunkin on the field but when he went down there was an obvious decline in production.

"He's better today,'' Jones said. "We'll see. We were shooting for Friday that he would be able to go through walk-throughs and hopefully be available for the game. He probably won't start. But if something happens, he'll be available.''

College Football Gambling: Minnesota focused on improving defense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Mexico State at Minnesota -20 O/U 52

Positive report on Minnesota's defense and its focus of getting to the quarterback. It wasn't a great performance last week against USC as Matt Barkley threw for 304 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs and no sacks but the Golden Gophers did however keep the run game in check (67 yards, 2.4 ypc). They also held the Trojans to 19 points after allowing 35 in last year's meeting – certainly a moral victory moving forward. With Jerry Kill in charge, there appears to be some actual coaching going on in Minneapolis.

"You'd be surprised what just a little bit more speed can do," said Gophers defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, whose primary task this fall is Read more

NCAAF Betting Preview: South Carolina Gamecocks at Georgia Bulldogs

Rob Veno Power Rating: South Carolina -2
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Georgia -0.5

Marty Otto's Betting Take: Our first marquee SEC showdown of the season kicks off in Athens on Saturday. Last year’s SEC East champion South Carolina held Georgia to season lows in points, first downs and yards in a 17-6 victory in Clumbia and its defense looks just as nasty this season. That’s a big problem for Georgia’s offensive line.

The Bulldogs’ o-line was a major story all offseason. They had losses to Read more

College Football ATS Preview: San Diego State well versed in facing option

09.08.2011     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego State -9.5 at Army O/U 55.5

Interesting handicap for Saturday's SDSU/Army matchup. This will mark the third straight option team the Aztecs have faced dating back to last year – fourth in two years when you add in Air Force. In the three previous games (AFA, Navy, Cal Poly), San Diego State went 3-0 SU/ATS and allowed a relatively modest 228 ypg rushing. The key though wasn't just the sound defense but SDSU's offense which produced 259 ypg  (6.5 ypc) on the ground.

Army head coach Rich Ellerson was none too pleased when he watched film of last week's Read more
