College Football Gambling: Cal's Maynard and Allen out vs. Oregon

11.07.2012     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon -28 at California O/U 67.5

Not that they had a chance before, but Cal is in big trouble against Oregon. Wide receiver Keenan Allen (61 catches, 737 yards) didn't play last week against Washington with a knee injury and will miss Saturday's matchup against the Ducks. And yesterday, starting quarterback Zach Maynard left practice with a knee injury and is not expected to play. The Golden Bears are expected to start Allen Bridgford. In two seasons Bridgford is 17-of-48 (yikes) for 213 yards and no touchdown or interceptions. If you like Oregon, bet it now, because -28 unlikely to be available on game day.

"We have a lot of confidence in him," Tedford said. "He understands what we're trying to do."

Asked to describe his confidence level, Bridgford said, "Very confident. I've never had a

College Football Betting: Florida hoping to open up offense vs. UL-Lafayette

11.07.2012     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Florida -26.5 O/U 50.5

Florida is hoping that this weekend's step down in class will allow the offense, particularly the passing game, to produce better numbers. Only one non-option team (Temple) averages fewer passing yards per game than the Gators (140.1). Earlier this season against the soft defenses of Tennessee and Kentucky, Florida had its two top passing outputs of the season. UL-Lafayette ranks 118th in pass defense at 294.6 ypg allowed.

“That’s a stat that you look at and say, ‘Well, they’ve given up some stuff,’ ” Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease said. “We should get it going, I guess. Those stats are saying that you can.”

“We went no-huddle this week to kind of get our tempo going,” Florida

College Football Handicapping: Stanford will start QB Hogan vs. Oregon State

11.07.2012     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State at Stanford -4.5 O/U 45

Stanford announced redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Hogan will start against Oregon State on Saturday. Hogan relieves Josh Nunes in the first quarter last week and finished with 184 yards and two touchdowns. Hogan has been praised for his ability to run the football.

"Kevin gives us that added dimension as a runner," Shaw said. "It's rare to be able to run and throw as well as be able to handle all the things we need him to handle."

According to Shaw, Hogan has a grasp of about 80 percent of the playbook. The coach didn't think that would be a drawback, however, "because what he gives us physically can help offset that."

College Football Gambling: A you-know-what storm brewing at Washington State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA -14.5 at Washington State O/U 60.5

Not that big of a shock to see some turmoil brewing in Pullman. Washington State first-year coach Mike Leach called out his seniors for being "zombies" a few weeks back. More and more underclassmen are seeing playing time. Starting wide receiver Marquess Wilson left practice and was suspended. And there were reports of in-house fighting during halftime of last week's blowout loss to Utah. Despite all that, Wazzu has found a way to cover three of its last five games but this doesn’t have the look of a team that is going to finish the season strong.

“Our standards are what our standards are. If somehow the standards don’t appeal to one player or another, that’s pretty irrelevant. They’re either onboard or off, and I can live with

College Football Betting: Arizona QB Scott doubtful vs. Colorado

11.06.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado at Arizona -30.5 O/U 66

Don’t expect to see Arizona quarterback Matt Scott under center against Colorado on Saturday. Scott has been dealing with a concussion and considering the opponent, the Wildcats would be best served to start back-up B.J. Denker. We don't even know where to begin with handicapping this matchup. On one hand you have an Arizona team with a bad defense off a 66-10 loss playing a team in Colorado that has been outscored 168-20 its last three games.

College Football Betting: UL-Monroe's season goes from great to potentially disastrous

11.05.2012     01:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Monroe at Arkansas State -6.5

What a turn of events for UL-Monroe. Last week against rival UL-Lafayette – a team ULM had lost to four straight times, including back-to-back one-point affairs – the Warhawks suffered injuries to six starters including quarterback Kolton Browning who was having a career year. Browning isn't listed on the team's depth chart which suggests he won't play. Senior Cody Wells played decent in relief and has experience (1,500 career yards, 11 TDs, 14 INTs) but unlike Browning, isn't much of a runner. That means the Warhawks, who don’t have a bye week (they didn't play Week 1), must prepare for their biggest game of the season in four days with a back-up quarterback. Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Non-bye week teams prepare for final stretch

11.05.2012     11:53 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Updating our “non-bye week teams” for the 2012 season. We tracked the results of this profile (final three games both SU and ATS) dating back to 2008 and came up with 37-62 SU and 44-52 ATS betting against.

California - Lost at home last week to Washington as 4-point chalk. With Oregon coming to town and a trip to Corvallis, the season – and Jeff Tedford’s tenure? – appear all but over.

UNLV - Three winnable games left against Hawaii, Colorado State and Wyoming. The Rebels have covered five straight.

New Mexico - The depth-shy Lobos are already running on fumes. After blowing a big lead against Fresno State two weeks ago, UNM was a no-show in Saturday's 35-7 loss at UNLV. Three games remaining starting this week at home against Wyoming.

Western Michigan - Last week's win at Central Michigan snapped an 0-3 SU/ATS slide. Two games remaining against bottom feeders Buffalo and Eastern Michigan. Read more
