College Football Betting Preview: West Virginia Mountaineers at Kansas State Wildcats

West Virginia at Kansas State
Saturday, 12:45 pm PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Kansas State -7.5 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Kansas State -10.5 O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Kansas State -11
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Kansas State

Rested and ready, I expect a great effort from the Kansas State Wildcats this week and they play host to West Virginia. The Wildcats have four losses on the season but all were competitive – the types of games last year's veteran group was able to win. Considering the roster turnover, it shouldn't come as a shock to see K-State struggle in the W-L department. A noteworthy stat when comparing last year's group to this year's is turnover margin. The Wildcats had only 12 turnovers in 2012 and a +20 margin. This year they've had 22 turnovers and are near the bottom nationally at -11. Six games into the season, I expect that number to start to move in K-State's Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions at Ohio State Buckeyes

Penn State at Ohio State
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -14.5 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Ohio State -14.5 o/U 56.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Ohio State -12
Marty Otto's Recommendation: Over

It’s a primetime ABC television tilt between Penn State and Ohio State as they renew their classic rivalry. The unbeaten Buckeyes survived a strong test from Iowa last week and look to keep their slim BCS title hopes alive. In order to do so they need to not only win but likely win by big margins moving forward as well as get a little help in the form of losses from two teams currently in front of them in the BCS rankings. For Penn State this likely represents their “BCS Title” game as they remain banned from the postseason.

Give much credit to Bill O’Brien and the job he’s done as well as to the kids who have played their tails off for him since he took Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Boise State goes with backup QB vs. BYU

10.22.2013     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Boise State at BYU -7.5

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick will be out for at least five weeks leaving junior Grant Hedrick as the team's starter for Friday's game at BYU. Southwick was hurt on the first play of last week's game and Hedrick performed well completing 18-of-21 passes for 150 yards. He also rushed for 115 yards.

“He did a good job,” Petersen said. “You can see that from the stands. Not many balls hit the ground.”

“We’ll always cater toward the guy back there’s strength, but it will be tweaks here or there,” Petersen said. “It’s not going to be a brand-new offense.”

College Football Gambling: Washington quarterback Keith Price not 100%

10.22.2013     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
California at Washington -24

Sounds as if Washington quarterback Keith Price is dealing with a thumb injury that has hindered his ability to throw the football. Last week against Arizona State, the normally accurate Price completed only 41% of his passes. He's questionable for Saturday's game against Cal. With a very beatable opponent and a bye week upcoming and, we may see Price sit this week or removed if and when the Huskies get up by a few scores. Redshirt freshman Cyler Miles is currently Price's backup.

"I don't know if that's a byproduct of the original injury or not," Sarkisian said. "But when you play quarterback and you have to grab the football, your thumb plays a pivotal role in gripping the ball and throwing the ball."

"I think physically, that's easy to see, right? Is

College Football Betting: Southern Miss to start frosh quarterback

10.22.2013     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
North Texas -10.5 at Southern Miss

Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken announced than freshman quarterback Nick Mullens will start Saturday's home game against North Texas. Last week, Mullens replaced starter Allan Bridgford and finished 9-of-17 for 97 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT.

“Nick Mullens is going to start this week at quarterback,” Monken said. “The bottom line is we need a spark. At this moment, we’ve got to see what Nick can do. This is the course we’re going to take this week. We’re going to give Nick an opportunity to move our offense forward.”

Monday Night Football Betting Recap: Giants win in a snoozer over Vikings

My apologies to Indianapolis and San Diego. Last week I made a crack about how boring their Monday Night game was. We now have a new definition for awfulness on a Monday…probably the modern-day poster child considering the incompetence on both sides of the ball.

You know…sometimes incompetence can be entertaining. Seems like I remember an old Monday Nighter in the Howard Cosell era where bad versions of the NY Giants and the then St. Louis Cardinals were playing a really ugly game. For some reason…it was hysterical! Mishaps, total buffoonery. Tonight was just sad.

*Minnesota’s only touchdown came on a punt return

*Their offense was seemingly on strike because of the goofy QB situation

*Their receivers were justifiably terrified of getting throttled by head-hunting defenders

*The Giants played poorly but coasted to a win anyway

The numbers…

NY Giants 23 (-4), Minnesota 7

College Football Betting: Oregon's ATS streak comes to an end

It was a sad day in Eugene as Oregon's perfect season against the spread came to an end against Washington State. The Ducks are such a unique case study because everyone knows they are good and everyone knows they can score at will and yet when it comes to lining their games, oddsmakers continue to undervalue them. Now in CRIS's defense, there hasn't been much effort going into some of their "opening numbers" – more of a chuck something out there and let the markets decide. Still, this deep in the season even without much research most bettors can come within a field goal of a majority of the card. And yet on Sunday afternoon, CRIS threw up a -17.5 (-21.5 at Pinnacle) on the Ducks' matchup vs. UCLA and it's already been bet up to -23. That type of discrepancy isn't new. From opening to closing numbers we've seen moves towards UO of 1, 3.5, 8, 7.5, 2.5, 0.5, 2.5, and now 5.5 this season – even bigger when you consider the peak number prior to the buyback. Ironically, the most accurate line on an Oregon game this season was Week 1 against Nicholls State who no one knows a damn thing about. The Ducks opened -58, closed -59, and won 66-3. Below is a list of Read more

College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 8

In a perfect world, North Carolina's upcoming schedule would serve as an opportunity to "buy low" on the Tar Heels. But Thursday’s loss to Miami was one I don't think this team is going to be able to shake off anytime soon. After a 1-4 start, UNC was given an opportunity to save its season with a primetime game against the top 10 Hurricanes. It was unquestionably UNC's best effort I had seen and a game they probably should have won. But Miami made some plays late and left the Tar Heels 1-5 after relatively high preseason expectations. If North Carolina plays like they did against the 'Canes the rest of the way out (vs. BC, at NCST, vs. UVA, at PITT, vs. ODU, vs. DUKE) they could conceivably finish 7-5. But toughness is an issue with this club and it wouldn't surprise me to see them lose a few of those games outright.

Up 28-7 with 8 minutes to go in the third quarter, it looked like Louisville was going to pull away from UCF and remain undefeated. Instead, the Knights fought back and it was clear that the Cardinals didn't know how to respond to actually being in a competitive football game. It was fitting that the final box score in terms of first down, Read more
