Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans at Iowa Hawkeyes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan State +6.5 at Iowa O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Michigan State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

The Michigan State Spartans travel to Iowa City for their toughest remaining test of the season as they shoot to stay unbeaten and on top of the Big Ten standings. MSU is 8-0 for the first time in over 40 years and ABC television will carry the action as Iowa tries to rebound off a disappointing 31-30 home loss last week to Wisconsin.

We’ve cashed big on the Spartans with a pair of top 20* Big Drive bombers when Michigan State beat both Michigan and Illinois by big margins. Last week the Spartans made a remarkable second half come back to beat Northwestern on the road, 35-27, and rewarded their betting backers with an even more miraculous pointspread cover thanks to a late touchdown after Northwestern turned the ball over on downs.

The breaks, trick plays, fake kicks, punts and solid fundamentals are all working for the Spartans and while the pressure may be building, so too is Read more

West Virginia focused on run game against UConn

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia -6 at UConn O/U 44.5

Because of the inconsistent health of running back Noel Devine, West Virginia has had a difficult time running the football of late. Eliminate the 219-yard effort against woeful UNLV, and the Mountaineers averaged only 81 ypg against LSU, USF and Syracuse. Tonight, they face a UConn run defense that has had issues. In games against FBS foes, the Huskies have allowed 173.1 ypg. West Virginia ran for a season-high 234 yards in last year's 28-24 win over UConn. Devine was not listed on this week’s injury report.

"We may run a little more," Stewart said.

"I thought our quarterback did a pretty good job, but maybe Bill Stewart put too much on our quarterback," Stewart said. "I don't think so, but we've gone back to what coaches do: 'What's this guy do best? What's that guy do best?' If we think we can run the ball a little Read more

Betting Preview: Green Bay Packers at New York Jets

Green Bay at NY Jets -6 O/U 42.5
Recommendation: New York

The injury list remains very long for the Green Bay Packers entering Sunday’s showdown against the 5-1 New York Jets. The Packers have had some of the worst luck in the NFL with injuries this year, especially on defense. There are six contributors listed as questionable on that side of the ball; Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett, Al Harris, Atari Bigby, Derrick Martin and Cullen Jenkins. There are also four more defenders that are on IR and out for the year, along with tight end Jermicheal Finley and running back Ryan Grant; two key members of the offense. Bigby and Harris are important members of the secondary that have yet to play this season; their return would be a huge help to the Packers defense. Offensively, receiver Donald Driver also joins the list of questionable Packers.

At full strength, I felt like Green Bay was the best team in the NFC this year. However, with the roster in its current state, that is no longer the case. Read more

Penn State to start McGloin at quarterback

10.29.2010     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Michigan -3 at Penn State O/U 53.5

Penn State will start former walk-on quarterback Matt McGloin this weekend against Michigan. MCGloin threw two touchdowns in relief of Robert Bolden (concussion) last week against Minnesota.

"We are going to go with Mac to start," Paterno said. "There is an outside chance Bolden will be OK, and we will see how it goes. Mac is good enough to get the job done."

Betting Preview: Arizona Wildcats at UCLA Bruins

Arizona at UCLA +9.5 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: UCLA
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT

Two extremes are fresh in bettors’ minds when talking about UCLA and Arizona. For the Bruins, last Thursday on national TV, Oregon did whatever it wanted to do en route to a 60-13 victory. There weren’t a lot of positives to say about UCLA’s performance outside of them not being the first nor the last team to feel Oregon’s wrath. Arizona meanwhile was taking advantage of a good situational play as Washington traveled down to the desert off an overtime victory over Oregon State. The Wildcats jump out early and never looked back as they cruised to a 44-14 win.

As a result of what was last seen, I believe we are getting some decent value with the Bruins at home this weekend. Last season, Arizona was never favored by more than a field goal on the highway including their rivalry tilt against 4-8 Arizona State. And of their six road games, they won three by margins of four, three and five. This year, Read more

NBA Handicapping Preview: Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz

The Phoenix Suns overachieved last season while winning 54 games and earning a trip to the Western Conference finals. Early season forecasts are not bright for the Suns, as this team is likely to struggle on the inside and go through some transition and beat downs on the interior.

Phoenix guard Steve Nash has acknowledged the Suns shortcomings prior to the season and noted the team’s lack of strength and imperfect roster. Nash must now run the offense without a key pick-and-roll piece, as Amar’e Stoudemire took his superman cape to the big apple. The pitfalls surfaced opening night when Phoenix was outscored 31-11 in the fourth quarter and lost at Portland 106-92. The Suns ran out of gas and had no go-to-guy down low to assist aging star guard Steve Nash. The perimeter players of Jason Richardson and Steve Nash led this team with 22 and 26 points respectively, and those two will be counted on often to score for this Suns team.

Just before the contest, Phoenix coach Alvin Genry had these less-than Read more

Broncos and 49ers play on Wembley Stadium hybrid turf

Denver vs. San Francisco -1.5 O/U 42

In 2007, much was made about Wembley Stadium's "pitch" for the NFL's UK debut. The New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 in what was later dubbed a "mudfest". In March of this year, Wembley's was resurfaced for the 10th time since 2007 and the results were anything but spectacular. In the FA Cup in April, a slew of complaints were made including Tottenham manager Henry Redknapp, who called the playing surface a "disgrace". Following that, the stadium made another adjustment, this time relaying Desso Turf, which is a combination of artificial and real grasses. According to one report, various soccer players said that the switch made a big Read more

Oddsmakers adjust lines for Oklahoma State suspension

10.28.2010     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma State -5 at Kansas State O/U 66.5

With Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon officially suspended for Saturday's game at Kansas State, most sportsbooks have reposted their odds. OSU opened as a 6-point favorite but is now -5 across the board. While it is often times wise not to overreact to skill position player injuries, Blackmon was without question a major focus point in the Cowboys’ offense. Check out and compare Blackmon's and No. 2 receiver Josh Cooper's stats:

Blackmon - 62 catches, 1,112 yards, 14 TDs
Cooper - 36 catches, 400 yards, 1 TD

Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Missouri at Nebraska -7.5 O/U 55
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 12:30 am PT – ESPN

Missouri is about as un-hyped as an undefeated college football team can be for late October. In fact, much of the betting world didn’t seem to be aware of the Tigers at all prior to their home underdog win over No. 1 Oklahoma last week. Money had come in against Missouri in all three of their conference games; and the books kept that money as Gary Pinkel’s squad continued to pull upsets and cover pointspreads.

The money has come in against the Tigers once again this week as they face their stiffest road test of the young season in Lincoln. An opener of +6 has been bet up to +7.5, crossing the key number of seven in the process. If Mizzou can hang within a touchdown of the Huskers, they’ll cash their supporters’ tickets.

Missouri’s stats don’t overwhelm bettors; ranked outside the top 30 nationally in both total offense and total defense. They didn’t Read more
