Floyd Mayweather is not the smartest bettor in the world

03.30.2011     11:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We need to get Floyd Mayweather on the Sportsmemo Radio Show because the guy is simply a riot. He won another monster bet last night ($47K to be exact) on the Cleveland Cavaliers. He tweeted that he was the "only man in America who bet $50K on the Cavs". In his defense, he's probably right. But we'll go ahead and call Floyd's betting acumen into question. Yes, he bet the Cavs, but for +12.5 for the second half. Cleveland was up 11 at halftime which means as oppose to grabbing the +13 or +14 on the game, he now all of a sudden was in a position where he likely needed the Cavs to win outright (+1.5 adjusted), something they accomplished 14 out of 72 times heading into the night. But this is Floyd Mayweather we are talking about and the Cavs ended up winning by double-digits. The guy is unstoppable.

Tight lines and last second finishes doesn't deter casual bettors

03.29.2011     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly
There are serious bettors and those who come out of the woodwork for March Madness. Sure it is fun to watch and win in the NCAA Tournament but you would think that these guys would learn that a consolation game in the Puerto Rico Shootout in mid-November is a slightly easier nut to crack than say one of the countless NCAA Tournament games that inevitably come down to the last 30 seconds.

"I grew up with my dad and my grandfather both betting on sports, so I've been exposed to it since I was born," he said. "I got really interested in it with lines and spreads and trends probably around 13 and 14 or so."

"My favorite sport to bet on is March Madness, absolutely," said Aric Dunaway, accounting junior. "It's all in the name — March Madness. Where else can we have VCU and Butler duking it out for a chance in the championship Read more

Kentucky favored to win title; VCU remains biggest underdog

03.28.2011     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You would think that if VCU cuts down the nets in Houston that sportsbooks would escape all of the No. 1 seed futures money on Pittsburgh, Kansas, Ohio State and Duke – a No. 1 seed had won four straight titles heading into this year's tournament. But according to a couple of Las Vegas oddsmakers, if the Rams manage to win two more games, the books would take a substantial hit. Mathematically, VCU was a 1,370-to-1 long shot to reach the Final Four. Pinnacle lists Kentucky as the betting favorite to win it at +144 while VCU is the biggest underdog on the board at 5-to-1.

"A lot of people are going to think the books crushed them with VCU knocking off Kansas. That is the total Read more

Elite Eight Betting Recommendation: VCU vs. Kansas

VCU vs. Kansas -11 O/U 146
Recommendation: Kansas

Top seed Kansas Jayhawks take on the No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio. The winner advances to the Final Four in Houston, and I expect VCU’s Cinderella tournament run is about to end in convincing fashion. VCU has beaten some strong defensive teams during their magical run using a 94-foot game to pressure opponents. The Rams’ four outright underdog wins have been impressive while covering the point spread by a combined 70+ points.

But the Jayhawks have seen this type of pressure and full court game before while dismantling Missouri twice during Big Xll play. VCU’s pressure and transition will not frustrate Kansas, and the Jayhawks can thrive in a full court game if VCU wants to push the pace and pressure.

VCU is hitting 43% from the arch in NCAA Tournament while Kansas nailing 33% from long range. The Jayhawks rank fourth in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency Read more

Rob Veno handicaps the CIT Final Four

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The secondary post season tournaments have all now whittled their way down to their respective semifinal and championship rounds.  All of these tournament formats are different which makes handicapping them different as well. The NIT uses the neutral floor site of Madison Square Garden for their Final Four while the College Insider Tournament plays out on home floors and the CBI uses a best of three championship series played on alternating home courts. Let’s now take a brief overview of the CIT.

CIT – This is by far the most unique tournament format in all of college sports. First of all, only mid- and low-majors are invited (Collegeinsider.com is a website devoted to that classification of teams).  Then there is the absence of seedings; brackets and regions combined with subjective second round byes and home floor advantages. This unstructured style has not taken anything away from this 24-team tourney which has been exciting and profit enhancing where totals are concerned (60% overs). The CIT is now Read more

The NIT uses the neutral floor site of Madison Square Garden for their Final Four while the College Insider Tournament plays out on home floors and the CBI uses a best of three championship series played on alternating home courts. Let’s take a brief overview of each tournament beginning with the NIT.

NIT – Shunned by the NCAA Tournament, #1 seeds Alabama and Colorado made the most of their tailor made NIT scheduling (each played all three games at home) to advance into the semifinals. They now get to use ESPN and the bright lights of the New York City stage to prove they were worthy of acceptance into the Big Dance.

Alabama has gone 2-0-1 against the closing number but 3-0 is more likely since the New Mexico game went from -4.5 to -7. Of the four remaining teams, the Read more

Nevada wants money from uncashed casino tickets

03.24.2011     09:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wonder were all of those $1 uncashed slot machine tickets go? Well a lot of them essentially disappear because let's face it, a majority of casino patrons don't care about the $1.50 they won on the Seven n' Stripes slot. But the money does add up, to the tune of $50 million in the state of Nevada according to one estimate. Currently, the casinos just keep the money, but some lawmakers say the unclaimed tickets are technically "unclaimed property" which should in turn be given to the state. Anything for a buck, huh?

Random Betting News and Notes for the Sweet Sixteen

03.23.2011     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
A worthy read from SI.com that breaks down the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament. Couple of highlights worth noting...

- Richmond, VCU and San Diego State are the only teams with seniors accounting for more than 50% of the team's minutes. North Carolina and Arizona are below 10%.

- Duke shooting guard Andre Dawkins should thrive now that Kyrie Irving is back.

- SDSU held Temple's Juan Fernandez to 1-of-10 shooting from inside the arc. Do the same against Kemba Walker and the Aztecs move on to the Elite Eight.

- BYU has scored 21.5% of its points in transition while Wisconsin's fast break production accounts for just 5.7% of its offense.

- Ohio State has an off/def efficiency difference of 34.4, meaning through two games the Buckeyes have averaged 111.3 points per possession and allowed just 76.9 ppp.

- Important note for those who participate in live Read more

No documented bracket picked the entire Sweet Sixteen

03.23.2011     09:44 AM     Printer Friendly
Not surprising but of the estimated 5.9 million NCAA Tournament brackets filled out by online users at ESPN, not one correctly picked the Sweet Sixteen. According to reports, one bracket nailed 15 of the 16 with the lone miss coming on Kentucky. And for those five "handicappers" who managed to go 0-for-16 on the first day, your special promotional graphic on the front page of sportsmemo.com will be ready shortly.

- 319,081 (4.6%) had No. 11-seeded Marquette beating No. 3-seeded Syracuse in the third round.

- 18,950 (0.3%) had No. 10-seeded Florida State and No. 11-seeded VCU in the Sweet 16.

- 38,634 (0.7%) picked all four teams from the East to advance (Ohio State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Marquette).

- 2,811 (less than 0.05%) picked all four teams from the Southwest to advance (Kansas, Richmond, VCU, Florida State).

- There were 20,821 brackets that had each of the four "underdog" Read more
