College Football Betting: Auburn Tigers Season Over/Under Wins

Auburn Tigers
Recommendation: Under 7.5 wins (-170 @ Pinnacle, Greek, 5Dimes)

There has been some remarkable staff turnover since head coach Gene Chizik arrived on the Plains, and this year he will once again be breaking in two new coordinators. Longtime Atlanta Falcons assistant Brian VanGorder is the new defensive coordinator and Scot Loeffler, formerly a Temple assistant, is the new offensive coordinator. I’m sure Chizik is confident in the two new hires, but the fact is that neither of them have been a successful coordinator at this level. They are also implementing new schemes – drastically different than what was ran last year – and do not have a lot of experienced players to run them.

Offensively, Auburn struggled in 2011, averaging just 337 yards per game with no stability at the quarterback position. There is still no clear cut #1 signal caller on the roster this year, although it looks as if sophomore Kiehl Frazier will get the starting nod over junior Clint Moseley. Their top offensive weapon, running back Michael Dyer, transferred to Arkansas State, leaving no power back that can handle the ball 30 times per Read more

College Football Gambling: North Carolina Tar Heels Season O/U Wins

North Carolina Tar Heels
Recommendation: Over 7.5 wins (-125 @ Greek)

Despite being banned from the ACC Championship game and a post season bowl berth, North Carolina players banded together and decided to return to Chapel Hill and play with a purpose this season. That certainly pleased incoming, first year head coach Larry Fedora who will reap the benefits of some great recruiting done by his predecessor Butch Davis. The cupboard is very much full and this Tar Heel squad is a legitimate threat to Virginia Tech which is favored to win the ACC Coastal Division.

After seeing what Clemson OC Chad Morris’ high octane, spread offense did to this conference in his first try, there’s every reason to project Fedora’s version will do the same. Led by sopomoreh QB Bryn Renner, ACC Rookie Player of the Year RB Giovanni Bernard, and an extremely talented and experienced OL, huge numbers figure to be put up by this offense. Renner lost top WR Dwight Jones but he’s got a strong rapport with this returning corps which features three receivers who averaged 20.7+ yards per catch. North Carolina has the type of explosive run/pass Read more

College Football Gambling: Kansas State Wildcats Season Over/Under Wins

Kansas State Wildcats
Recommendation: Under 8 wins (-165 @ Greek)

2011 was a terrific season for the Wildcats who continued to overachieve under head coach Bill Snyder.  I know it’s like standing on a cliff, lifting one knee to your nose and trying to balance yourself without falling but I’m going to fade KSU here. Underestimating this team is hazardous to the bankroll but I just can’t see this 2012 season producing eight regular season victories. The personnel is there on paper to again be productive offensively, defensively and on special teams but there are multiple areas where last year’s results may not be duplicated.

First and easily the most important is the 317 carries recorded by quarterback Collin Klein. It’s almost impossible to see him surviving the 12-game season if he has to tote the ball that often again. Honestly, it’s hard to see him starting and playing all 12 games if he reduces that number to 250. Klein has the ultimate bullseye on his chest and opposing defenses are going to focus on hitting him repeatedly. Should he get hurt, there’s a pair of freshman behind him with zero Read more

College Football Gambling: Big XII non-conference schedule historically soft

07.26.2012     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Because of the nine-game conference schedule, each Big XII team will play three non-conference games (30 total). Most power conference schools like to schedule at least one "challenging" non-conference opponent and two patsies. Now some of these matchups are booked years in advance so what looks challenging on paper one year might not the next. That appears to be the case with the Big XII heading into 2012. Not only do they play just seven games vs. BCS conference schools but there isn't one elite level team of the bunch.

Iowa State plays its yearly rivalry vs. Iowa in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have only 11 returning starters and are lined at a modest 7.5 wins. Miami (6.5 O/U) plays the second game of a home-and-home at Kansas State. The Hurricanes aren't exactly in a good place these days. Oklahoma is 60-2 in Norman since 2002 and plays host to Notre Dame (8 O/U). Oklahoma State travels to Arizona (5.5 O/U). The Wildcats are in a bit of rebuilding mode. Virginia is lined at 6.5 wins and travels to TCU. Texas goes to Ole Miss (4.5 O/U), who very easily could be the worst team in the SEC. And West Virginia continues its on-again-off-again rivalry with Maryland (4.5 Read more

NCAAF Gambling News: North Carolina looks to take off under Fedora's offense

07.25.2012     01:28 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Another team adjusting to a new coach and system as North Carolina welcomes former Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora. Butch Davis was able to bring talent to Chapel Hill but off-the-field distractions kept the program from reaching its full potential. Fedora has some talent at the quarterback position with Bryn Renner returning. Renner completed 68% of his passes with 26 TDs and 13 INTs last season. Renner said that Fedora's offense is similar to the one he ran in high school under his father.

Southern Miss Offense under Fedora
2011: 17th, 461.4 ypg
2010: 18th, 453.4 ypg
2009: 31st, 416.4 ypg
2008: 20th, 433.5 ypg

“We’re not trying to go as fast as possible that we are going helter-skelter,” Renner said. “We want to know that we are doing it within the offense. We want to score enough points to win.”

“You have to have a sense of urgency about everything we do,” Fedora said. “I’ve gone Read more

College Football Handicapping: Arizona's Scott looks to adapt to Rich Rod's offense

07.25.2012     11:38 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Like Arizona State, Arizona is in a bit of transition with Rich Rodriguez taking over for Mike Stoops and only 11 returning starters. Quarterback Nick Foles graduated leaving Matt Scott the starter. Scott, who redshirted last season, was originally slated to be the starter back in 2009 but lost the gig to Foles. He's a mobile kid and seems better suited than Foles to run Rodriguez's spread offense.

“I really didn’t get that shot (to start) right away,” Scott said. “Now I want to take full advantage of every opportunity I get. (Being the backup) was a real humbling experience for me, and it really made me realize that not everything is given to you. It’s making me work a lot harder already.”

“We’ve got a new system but he Read more
