NCAAF Betting Alert: UNC faces early season drama for a second straight year

07.28.2011     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday North Carolina fired head coach Butch Davis amid an NCAA investigation involving improper benefits and academic misconduct. Here is a list of potential candidates. The Tar Heels are no strangers to off-the-field issues. Heading into last season, 12 players were suspended for the first game of the season against LSU. The betting market went crazy fading UNC with the opener of pk moving as high as +9.5 before some buy-back left a closing number of +7.5. North Carolina ended up covering that game (30-24 loss) and went on to have a respectable season (8-5 SU, 7-6 ATS). This year, some of the early Regular Season O/U Wins show 8 and 7.5. The Tar Heels return 13 starters (6 off/7 def).

NCAA Football Betting Notes: Northern Illinois goes no-huddle offense

07.27.2011     01:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under first-year head coach Dave Doeren (Wisconsin DC), Northern Illinois expects to utilize a no-huddle offense. Here is a video of senior quarterback Chandler Harnish discussing the change. The Huskies return all five offensive linemen after allowing only 13 sacks last season. NIU averaged 65 offensive plays per game. The big concern for this season is only two starters return from a unit that led the MAC in scoring defense (18.9 ppg).

The Huskies were picked to finish second in this year’s Mid-American Conference preseason media poll, more on the strength of their offense, the one that’s talking about executing 90 plays a game at an almost Oregon-like tempo.

“Because our offense runs the no-huddle now, our guys are scrambling in practice,” Progar Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Hughes shows decent velocity since return

07.27.2011     08:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Hernandez) at New York (Hughes) -145 O/U 8

Breakdown of Phil Hughes' velocity since making his return and what it means moving forward. His fastball has averaged above 90 MPH in all three starts. Tonight he faces Seattle, who is in a little bit of a slump.

Mike Fast has done research that shows that, for every tick above 89 on the gun, a pitcher can lose about 0.25 runs allowed per game. We can use that backwards to compare Phil Hughes' 2010 to his possible 2011 second half. Well, he's going to be throwing his fastball about a mile per hour slower, so we can expect Hughes to replicate 2010 with slightly worse numbers. That should mean an ERA that is clearly on the wrong side of four.

It is almost as if Jerry Meals wanted to get to bed

07.27.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Umpire Jerry Meals didn't sleep well last night and may of had a security guard or two watching to make sure no one wearing black and gold put a flaming bag of poop at his hotel door. The video below pretty much explains it all. The game lasted until 2 am ET, featured 18 walks and 33 strikeouts with both bullpens combining for 26.1 innings of work.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Dempster) at Milwaukee (Narveson) -143 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

To say that Ryan Dempster has owned this Brewers lineup is something of an understatement.  Dempster threw seven innings of four-hit, shutout ball against Milwaukee when he faced them last month, cashing a 1-0 decision for the Cubs.  He faced the Brewers five times last year.  He shut them down five times, going 4-0 in those starts with a 2.23 ERA.  His career numbers at Miller Park mirror those types of results: 84 IP, 2.35 ERA, 213 BAA.  That’s certainly not a short sample size!  Facing a Brewers lineup that produced 1, 2, 4, 0 and 2 runs in regulation of their last five games (all Unders), there’s no reason to expect anything but another strong showing from Dempster tonight!

It’s a similar story for Chris Narveson, who matches up extremely well against a Cubs lineup that simply can’t hit lefties.  Chicago, as a team, is batting .189 against southpaws since Read more

Las Vegas bookie busted after 32 years on the lam

07.25.2011     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even in our most creative hour, we couldn't make this up. Here is the semi-quick version (full version). In 1979, Arthur Gerald Jones disappeared from his Chicago home after accumulating an enormous gambling debt. He was eventually declared legally dead after authorities found his empty car at the airport.

Jones though wasn't dead but instead moved to Las Vegas, worked as a bookie, and up until last week, assumed the identity of another man. That man, Clifton Goodenough, worked for the federal government for more than 20 years and was catching heat from the IRS since 1995 as a result of "miscellaneous" incomes. Goodenough went so far as to send complaint letters to Arizona senator John McCain about this issue but no one did a thing. Goodenough even tracked Jones down (Jones was now going by a new alias) and spoke to him on the Read more

British Open betting limited on winner Darren Clarke

07.22.2011     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsmemo's Fairway Jay maintains some strong relationships with bettors and bookmakers in Las Vegas, and he was one of just a limited number to cash in on Darren Clarke's victory at the Open Championship.

Clarke was listed from 125-1 to 150-1 at the Hilton SuperBook. After being tied for the lead after two rounds, his adjusted price was 12-1 to win. And after round 3 and in the lead by a stroke heading into Sunday's final round, Clarke was a 3-1 favorite to hoist the Claret Jug...but still the second-betting favorite behind Dustin Johnson.

Jay bet Clarke at 12-1 and hit him harder at 3-1. However, he reminds us (jokingly) that he was not sharp enough to bet Clarke to win at 150-1 and his matchup betting was just 'level par'.

Jay Kornegay is the Sportsbook Director and Jeff Sherman is the golf oddsmaker for the Hilton. Sherman told Fairway Jay that less than 10 recreational bets were made on Clarke to Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Tennessee roster features 70 percent underclassmen

07.22.2011     08:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting to note that Tennessee's roster is comprised of 70% underclassmen. Their depth chart shows as many as 12 starters will be freshmen or sophomores. The team also features only 10 seniors – four of which are projected starters (tied for the lowest mark in the country).

"We entered this spring saying we're not going to let our youth be an excuse for failure, and we're not," Dooley said. "So it's going to be everybody's responsibility not to act like freshmen and sophomores and not to play like them, and we'll see if they can do that."

College Football Betting Tips: Revenge Games for 2011

07.22.2011     06:23 AM     Printer Friendly
Taking a look at some “revenge games” on tap for the 2011 season. Revenge can mean different things to different handicappers so we limited it to situations where a team comes in off of a bye week and faces an opponent it lost to the year before – preferably as a favorite or at home. There are probably some that we missed but this gives you a head start of games to circle. If you have any of your own "revenge games" feel free to add them to the comment box below.

9/17 - UCLA at Oregon State - The Bruins (+4) kicked a field goal with no time remaining to beat the Beavers 17-14 in Los Angeles. This year, OSU will be rested and ready while UCLA is off a home game against Texas.

9/24 - Middle Tennessee at Troy - The Blue Raiders have been in revenge mode against the Trojans for the better part of a half decade. Over the last four meetings, Troy has outscored MTSU 149-44. But last year's home loss as a 4-point favorite particularly stung as ESPN2 broadcasted Read more

NCAA Football Betting Notes: Brantley eager for offensive change

07.21.2011     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
News and notes on Florida from SEC Media Day. The big talk was the change from Urban Meyer's spread offense to Charlie Weis' pro-style system. Quarterback John Brantley never fit in with what Meyer was trying to accomplish but figures to improve under Weis’ watch. He went on to hint that the Gators will be taking more shots down field this year. Amazingly, Florida recorded just one pass play over 50 yards last season -- a 51-yard toss from Brantley to Carl Moore.

"I'm not a runner," the Gators' senior quarterback said Wednesday at SEC Media Days. "I don't like to run. I like to hand the ball off to a fast guy or throw it to a fast guy. I'm all for that. I try not to take too many hits."

"It was new to all of us," senior wide receiver Deonte Thompson said. "We were used to putting up 30, 40 points and it was hard to get 21. It was so new. I wouldn't Read more
