William Hill to offer football handicapping contests at Vegas sportsbooks

08.07.2012     02:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Gaming Today, Las Vegas newbie William Hill will be offering both college and pro football handicapping contests starting this season. Some of the details below...

There’s $600,000 of guaranteed money that will be offered in separate pro and college football contests by the company that bought and merged 164 Leroy’s, Cal-Neva and Lucky’s sports books.

The $500,000 Pro Pick’em Football Contest has a $25 entry fee. It’s a no-points contest picking all games with no point spreads that offers both weekly and season prizes. $21,000 will be awarded in each of the 17 weeks and $41,000 goes to the season winners. The end-of-season grand prize winner will also win a VIP trip for two to London for the 2013 NFL game. As a gift for signing up, they’ll also give each contestant a free $5 parlay card wager.

The College Pick’em Contest has a $100 entry fee with $100,000 in guaranteed prize money at season’s end. Contestants will be required to pick seven Read more

Reality show plays part in MGM makeover

07.31.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interview with MGM Grand President Scott Sibella and how his experience on CBS's Undercover Boss helped spark the resort's $160 million makeover.

"The show has run six times, even though we did it a year-and-a-half ago," Sibella said. "It’s still something I talk about a lot. I’d only been here a couple of months, so I was getting to know the culture and the property."

I don’t want MGM to be a dormitory, which in the past it has been because of where it's located and the value of the rooms. So people would stay here, and I would have long taxi lines. I want to convert that to: You stay here and you never have to leave for the weekend.

Gaming Policy Committee offers advice on online gambling to lawmakers

07.26.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vegas Inc. covered yesterday’s final Gaming Policy Committee pow-wow that covered topics such as online gambling regulation, the UIGEA, gaming licenses, and more.

“We’ve had some of the sharpest minds in our state make presentations that have helped us preserve Nevada’s leadership role in gaming,” Sandoval said. “I found the presentations extremely valuable and may call on the committee again.”

The committee recommended enabling Nevada to develop compacts with other states to allow more players to participate in online gaming. Experts have said Nevada may not have the population base to make Internet poker financially viable to companies if only in-state residents can play.

Cantor and William Hill give new look to Las Vegas sports betting

07.25.2012     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on the new look sportsbook scene in Las Vegas with the growing presence of Cantor Gaming and William Hill.

The major difference between companies like William Hill and Cantor Gaming is they are sports book-only operations. They have to make things work to the fullest and that means taking every customer they can. They don’t have slots and table game revenue as a fall back to soften the blow of a bad day. Sports is all they do and they each have a massive army in place to maximize every opportunity.

William Hill’s CEO Joe Asher finally has his choice staff in place, an epic one that includes some of the sharpest sports book minds led by Nick Bogdanovich who will be in charge of the bookmaking operation. The “Dream Team” of bookmakers will pump out a large wagering menu bettors at 164 locations across the state will enjoy immensely.

Dude decides the best way to fund house down payment is roulette

07.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Here's a tip: If you’re trying to put together enough scratch for a down payment on a house, we suggest not playing roulette as a means of achieving your goal. After being told by multiple Las Vegas casinos that $20K was the single bet limit, a Hawaii man was given the green light to wager $66K at Binion's. Of course he won because no one wants to read about a loser.

“We are in the gambling business; this is what we do,” Terry Caudill, owner of Binion’s and the Four Queens Hotel & Casino, said in a statement. “It is somewhat unusual that he wanted to risk such a large amount. I consider these kinds of requests on a case-by-case basis.”

Vegas sportsbooks may change football parlay cards

07.19.2012     12:45 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some Las Vegas sportsbooks are considering making adjustments to their football parlay cards.

“We are going to review the pay charts, but one thing I will tell you for sure is we’re not going to be offering the entire bowl schedule on the cards weeks before the games are played, but rather only the games that are played that week,“ said Osborne.

Vegas oddsmakers talk customer comps

07.16.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
Various Las Vegas sportbook directors discuss their philosophies on customer comps.

"It's difficult when you have a different operator running the casino than you do the book," said Vic Salerno, chief technology officer and chairman of the board at William Hill in Las Vegas. "There is an automatic conflict between the two businesses."

"The comps have really dwindled ... with each property being different," said Mark Goldman, director of race and sports operations at Cantor Gaming.

"We've kept it pretty much the same for 23 years," Kornegay said. "We've made some adjustments over the years to recover costs, but that's it."

Sheldon Adelson's impact on internet gambling in Nevada

06.28.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Las Vegas Sun has an article about the potential impact casino giant Sheldon Adelson could have on online gambling in Nevada. Despite working in the industry, Adelson isn't a fan of online gambling. His reason? Or at least the one he wants everyone to believe: It will cause addiction and be too accessible to minors. Sounds about right.

“He’s gone from, ‘I’m against it, but I won’t be active in it,’ to making more public statements against it, and now he’s told important people in Congress he’s against it,” one lobbyist said. “So he seems to be getting stronger and more active in his opposition.”
