No-name handicapper gets reality TV show

07.30.2013     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
So CNBC has decided to put out a reality TV show on a supposed Las Vegas handicapper. The only problem, no one we spoke to has heard of this dude. Industry observer Todd Fuhrman offers his opinions on what has little to no chance of accurately portraying the life of a real sports bettor/handicapper.

MIT Card Counters speak at gambling conference

05.29.2013     02:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some member of the notorious MIT Card Counters returned to Las Vegas to speak at the 15th International Gambling and Risk Taking Conference at Caesars Palace.

"I think the MIT team was mostly feared because of its name," Chang said. "You know? 'Oh, those MIT geniuses are gonna come in and levitate the chips out of the rack … 'Oh my god."

"What that says about our freedoms and the direction we may be going," Bloch said. "Our ability to think is what really makes us human and it separates us from other animals, and when you kick someone out of a business or a country or whatever just because that person is exercising their ability to think, to me that's an affront to civil rights."

Nevada's Black Book alive and kicking

05.06.2013     06:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The fact that there really is a Las Vegas "Black Book" is pretty cool. Even cooler, the Gaming Control Board is about to add a new member. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the gentlemen is connected to the mob or tried to pull off an Ocean's 11-type heist. No, he's just a slot machine cheat. Over the last decade only six people have been placed on what it currently a 33-person list.

Slot machine glitch results in big payout, trouble for Las Vegas gambler

05.02.2013     10:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Crazy store about a dude who exploited a glitch in a slot machine at Las Vegas' Silverton Casino. Now he's in a heap of trouble. The federal kind.

“What you see in most gambling cheating cases is the guy’s got a magnet in his boot or he’s shocking the machine with static electricity.” says Leavitt, a veteran Vegas defense attorney. “All these guys did is simply push a sequence of buttons that they were legally entitled to push.”

Bookmaker reminisces on big moneyline score from Big Dance upset

03.15.2013     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Story of a Las Vegas bookmaker who hit it big when in 2004 a bettor came in bet a hefty amount on No. 2 seed Gonzaga on the moneyline vs. No. 10 seed Nevada. The Zags were around a 9-point favorite and got blasted 91-72. Score one for the bookies.

It was the 2004 NCAA basketball tournament, and our man was back. We put moneylines on every game, even with the No. 1 seeds playing a No. 16. He was starting to get a little cocky, making parlays with some of the top-seeded teams. In the first round, he had bet us eight parlays at $100,000 each, and hit them all.

Perry's Super Bowl XX touchdown started the prop bet explosion

02.01.2013     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cool article by David McIntire on the history of prop bets in Las Vegas.

As Ditka publicly down-played Perry’s role, the odds soared to as high as 75 to 1, potentially earning bettors $750 in winnings for every ten dollars bet on Perry to score. Then the national media picked up the story, relishing another colorful hook associated with a team that had created their own music video mid-season. As the publicity flowed in to Las Vegas, so did money. By kick-off the odds dropped to 2 to 1. Now a 10 dollar bet on Perry would only earn back 20 bucks.
