NFL Handicapping: Tennessee Titans bring in new defensive coordinator

07.20.2011     02:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Tennessee Titans brought back Jerry Gray to serve as defensive coordinator. Gray was the team's secondary coach before serving as DC at Buffalo from 2001-05. Last season, he was an assistant at Texas. According to Gray, he plans on getting the Titans back to playing "old school" football with more emphasis on blitzing and stopping the run. Last season, Tennessee finished 18th in points per game allowed (21.2) and 26th in yards per game allowed (367.7). Nine of their 16 games came against teams that finished in the top 10 in scoring (see chart below). Based on 2010's numbers, this year's schedule features only five opponents (Houston twice, Indianapolis twice and Atlanta) who ranked in the top 10. They should benefit tremendously with games against Cincinnati (22nd), Buffalo (28th), Cleveland (31st) and Carolina (32nd).

NCAAF Betting Notes: Dykes says Cameron is No. 1 quarterback

07.20.2011     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It appears as if Louisiana Tech will (for the time being) go with junior Colby Cameron at quarterback. According to head coach Sonny Dykes, Cameron performed well during the spring as has a good grasp on the offense. Last season, Tech's quarterback rotation was never ending with three different signal callers earning starts. The offense was at its best with veteran Ross Jenkins though he didn't offer much in the way of big play potential. Jenkins has since graduated, leaving Cameron in charge. The Bulldogs also have two JC transfers and incoming freshman Nick Isham should Cameron not deliver. Even with a brutal schedule (seven road games at: Southern Miss, Mississippi State, Idaho, Utah State, Fresno State, Ole Miss and Nevada) we project LT's offense to make a significant jump in the second year under Dykes and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.

Soccer is probably the dirtiest sport in the world

07.19.2011     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
College basketball could average a point shaving scandal per week for the next two years and LeBron James could share an apartment with Tim Donaghy and it wouldn't come close to the current state of soccer. The New York Times breaks down some of the more recent match-fixing scandals across the globe.

“Probably 90 percent of the legal and illegal gambling on football around the world takes place in Southeast Asia,” said Chris Eaton, a former Interpol official who for the last year has been head of security for FIFA, soccer’s world governing body. “There they bet on all kinds of matches, particularly European football. So it makes sense that criminal activity would arise there alongside it.”

NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas o-line the key for veteran offense

07.19.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas returns virtually every skill position player from last year's squad but there are some question marks along the offensive line. Last season, the Razorbacks amazingly had the same starting o-line for every game but three of those starters (both tackles) graduated. Head coach Bobby Petrino was recently forced to kick potential starting tackle Anthony Oden (Greg's brother) off of the team after a second DUI. And Seth Oxner, who started every game at center in 2009 but was a back-up last year, left school. Note that one of the keys for the Razorbacks during Petrino's first three seasons was the improvement of the o-line and running game. In 2008, Arkansas averaged only 113.5 ypg on the ground but improved to 131.8 ypg in 2009 and a very respectable 148.9 ypg a season ago.

NCAAF Handicapping: South Carolina defense focuses on stopping spread

07.18.2011     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier this summer, South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson complained that hurry-up offenses were ruining college football – defenses at a major disadvantage due to substitution rules. As a result, Johnson is planning to make various defensive adjustments, like instituting a 3-4 defense. The Gamecocks defense will be severely tested the first three weeks of the season with games against spread-based East Carolina, pro-style Georgia and Navy's option attack.

"We're going to work with a three-man line and a four-linebacker look and those two guys are going to be the two outside linebackers," Johnson said. "It's going to be another one of our defensive schemes we've been tweaking to use against some of these spread Read more

NCAAF Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Golden Gophers program was in steady decline throughout the Tim Brewster era. Minnesota was at least marginally competitive in the first half of the last decade with Glen Mason running the show, reaching five consecutive bowls from 2002-2006, when Mason was unceremoniously dumped. The Brewster era produced only one bowl appearance in four years, and the Gophers 1-9 start to the 2010 campaign was enough to get him fired.

New head coach Jerry Kill enjoyed great success as a program builder at Northern Illinois. The Huskies went 2-10 the year before Kill’s arrival, but they won six games and reached the Independence Bowl in his first season on the job in DeKalb. Kill also had success at 1-AA Southern Illinois. Now in his first stint in a major conference, Kill is expected to replicate that success in Minneapolis. It won’t be easy.

Kill’s first season at Southern Illinois was an unmitigated disaster, as the Salukis went 1-10 before the turnaround began in earnest in his second year on the Read more

MLB Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

LA Angels (Haren) at Oakland A's (McCarthy)
Recommendation: LA Angels

Dan Haren takes the mound tonight for the Angels as they visit Oakland to open the second half of their season. Haren has been absolutely unstoppable as of late. Despite a poor first inning last start against Seattle in which he gave up the only 2 runs to Seattle, he did nothing but rebound and pitch 8.2 innings of 5 hit ball with 8 strikeouts on the day.

This is nothing new for Haren backers as we have seen him continue to steamroll the opposition. In his last 3 starts he has given up just 9 hits and 2 earned runs over 25 innings! He has lowered his season ERA down to 2.61 with a WHIP of 0.95. The Angels are one of the hottest teams in the AL right now as they continue to chase down the Texas Rangers and sit 1.5 games back after an impressive 14-3 run to end the first half.

Oakland has only been heading south in the AL Read more

MLB Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

New York Yankees (Colon) at Toronto Blue Jays (Reyes)
Recommendation: OVER

Many bettors are shy about taking Overs immediately following the All Star Break, expecting the pitchers to have the better rhythm than the hitters following their only vacation of the entire season. That wiseguy reluctance to bet Overs on this particular day gives us a very reasonable number to bet Over as post-break play resumes tonight.

This is not a matchup of aces, by any stretch of the imagination. Bartolo Colon put up impressive first half numbers, but his 90 innings of work so far in 2011 is his most since 2007. He’s largely been a second half non-factor since 2005. We can expect a regression from this first half overachiever. Considering that Toronto bashed him for six runs in six innings of work the last time he faced them, it’s reasonable to predict continues offensive success from the Jays tonight. Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Sun Belt Conference primer

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011 Sun Belt Conference has a very visible divide between eight of its nine conference members. Florida International, Troy, UL-Monroe and Western Kentucky are all experiencing excitement for the 2011 season because of returning talent and coaching stability.

ULM and WKU are both in the second year of HC Todd Berry’s and HC Willie Taggart’s systems & philosophies. Season number two brings an expectation of growth and upward climbing into the upper echelon of the league standings. For Troy and FIU who have two of the three longest tenured head coaches in the league, this season is expected to bring a conference championship.

Those four squads all enter 2011 on the upswing with no transition to worry about. On paper, this quartet seems to be a bit easier to read where point spreads are concerned because there’s less guess work into how they figure to perform.

It’s the other half of this league which has campuses and supporters excited for different reasons that puts a Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell – New York Yankees – The Yankees have enjoyed a fabulous first half of the baseball season with a 53-35 record. A one-unit bet on every game the Yankees played this season and you’d be up roughly six to seven units. Much has worked out for the Bronx Bombers including the starting pitching of veterans Bartolo Colon and Freddie Garcia.

Colon is showing a 3.20 ERA, while Garcia owns a 3.13 number and both figures will be tricky to duplicate in the second half of the season. Their schedule was very friendly in the first half as well, which included 49 home games to just 39 on the road. With a veteran bunch built to win in Yankee Stadium this is a disparity to pay attention to.

The bullpen has been great as well, while owning the fifth best ERA in baseball at 3.11. With a banged up Mariano Rivera and while still dealing with other injuries this unit has perhaps peaked this season.

In addition, let’s consider the injury to Alex Read more
