Southern Conference Tournament Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The So-Con Tournament gets underway on Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn. Last year's tournament went according to seed with No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups in the semifinals followed by the two No. 1 seeds squaring off in the finals (Wofford beat Appalachian State 56-51). They changed the format of the tournament a few years back but each of the last four winners was one of the division champs (No. 1 seed).

On paper, the South Division was the stronger of the two this season with Charleston, Wofford, Furman and Davison all posting winning records in league play. In terms of Ken Pom's ranking, Western Carolina, who won the North Division, ranks 186th while five of the seven teams from the South are 150th or better. But from a head-to-head standpoint, the stronger South didn't do dominate the regular season vs. the North with a 22-21 SU, 19-23-1 ATS mark.

Western Carolina and Chattanooga earned the top two seeds respectively in the North while No. 1 Charleston and No. 2 Wofford tied atop the South at 14-4. All four teams have a Read more

ACC Betting Preview: North Carolina at Florida State

North Carolina at Florida State +2.5 O/U 139.5
Recommendation: Florida State

Many bettors taking note of red hot North Carolina, as the Tar Heels enter on a 5-0 SU run and pounded Florida State 89-69 on February 11th. At 12-2 in conference play, NC is tied with Duke and pushing for the league title with its own “last home game” and revenge upcoming on Saturday against the Blue Devils. But FSU qualifies under a number of LHG parameters, and for those bettors paying attention, note that the Seminoles feature the league’s no. 1 field goal defense, allowing less than 38% shooting. FSU’s perimeter defense is also dominating, and North Carolina is last in three-point shooting in the ACC at 27%. The loss of reserve win Reggie Bullock (knee) greatly affects the Tar Heels’ depth. Since the insertion of freshman Kendall Marshall at the point, NC has gone 9-2 ATS and the playmaker had 16 assists against FSU in their first meeting. North Carolina leads the ACC in rebounding margin, and Read more

Rio Casino heist conducted by criminal masterminds

03.01.2011     11:08 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Just when you thought criminals couldn't get any dumber, we hear the details of the recent botched robbery at Las Vegas' Rio Casino. Apparently there were three men in on the take, one of which stole $33K in casino chips. The chip stealer owed $15K to another gentleman who claims he was not involved in the plot. The third guy decided it wise to use his own taxi cab as the getaway vehicle. During said getaway, the robber and driver chit-chatted about what took place which was must have been a hit down at the local precinct considering the conversation, as most in taxis, was being recorded. The driver then dropped the robber off at Terrible's Casino to meet with the guy claiming he wasn’t involved. Surprisingly, the robber, said by some to be a "leader in Read more

Detroit at Milwaukee -5 O/U 184.5

The Detroit Pistons appear back to normal following the alleged "players revolt" leading up to last Friday's game against Philadelphia (110-94 loss). They showed some toughness by beating Utah the following night. According to Richard Hamilton, everything is copasetic. Here is a detailed article from The Detroit News breaking down exactly what happen and the state of the organization moving forward.

"First of all, John Kuester has my full support as we try to make a push towards the postseason over these last 21 games," Dumars said in a statement released Monday. "We've had a long and proud history of being a first class organization that handles its business the right way. We expect everyone that represents the Detroit Pistons to do so in a first class manner and Read more

Horizon League Tournament Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Horizon League Tournament is considered by some to be innovative in that it is entirely geared for the top two teams to meet in the finals (double bye). In 2002, Butler went 25-5 and had the nation's most road wins (15). They were the class of the league but UIC won the conference tournament as a sixth-seed at neutral site Cleveland. That prompted the league to move the semifinals and finals to the regular season champ, who this year is UW-Milwaukee. Since the switch, the Horizon League has seen a No. 1 vs. No. 2 finals matchup in six of eight years. The other two matchups were No. 1 vs. No. 3. Rested and ready, teams afforded a bye have a distinct advantage. Note that the second round and semifinals are at UW-Milwaukee. The finals are at the highest remaining seed should UWM not advance.

This year's host UW-Milwaukee was considered just another average outfit to start the year – and after a 4-5 start to league play. But the Panthers ripped off nine straight league wins (8-1 ATS) and won the title with an Read more

CBB Handicapping: Who has what it takes to win it all in 2011?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion. I write this article every year, and every year, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams.

The last 13 NCAA champions and the team’s they beat in the title game are listed here: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in ’03, UConn over Georgia Tech in ’04, North Carolina over Illinois in ’05, Florida over UCLA in ’06, Florida over Ohio State in ’07, Kansas over Memphis in ’08, North Carolina over Michigan State in ’09 and Duke over Butler last year.

All 13 champions had very specific abilities, a very specific track record and a very specific statistical profile as a team that allowed them to go all the way. In Part 1 of this article, I’ll take a look at that statistical profile and make a “short Read more

CBB Handicapping: Are soft rims the reason for Wisconsin Overs?

02.28.2011     07:49 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Have you noticed some of the obscene shooting performances by Wisconsin – and the opposition – in the Kohl Center this season? The most recent was last night's clinic in which the Badgers and Northwestern combined for the following offensive numbers: 49-94 52% FGs, 19-40 48% 3-pt, 24-31 77% FTs. The end result was a 78-63 UW win and another home game that went over the total. To date seven of Wisconsin's nine league games at the Kohl Center have gone over the total, and some of them weren’t even close. The last four home tilts have produce games scores of 141, 142, 138 and 138. All told, the average closing total on those nine home games was 123.5 and the average game score was 133.5.

The reason? In the handful of times I’ve watched Wisconsin play at home in Big Ten play, I have seen some generous bounces which suggest soft rims may be the culprit. And I’m apparently not the only one to notice. Type in “soft rims Kohl Center” into Google, and Read more

Betting marketplace says Gadhafi reign likely to end

According to Intrade.com, which is an online trading exchange for non-sports-related future events, it isn't looking good for Moammar Gadhafi. The marketplace has better than 80% odds that the Libyan leader will be gone by the end of the year. Last Friday, those odds opened at 11%. Other prediction markets include; The US will go into recession during 2012 (19%), Vlad Putin will run for President of Russia by the end of August (70%), and Dick Cheney will be the Republican Nominee in 2012 (0.1%).

Iowa next in line for legalized online poker

02.25.2011     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
Joining the likes of Florida, New Jersey and California, Iowa is making a push to legalize online poker for state residents over the age of 21. Players would set up accounts at state-run online casinos, log on and play. Iowa is one of three states (Michigan, Louisiana) that allow all five current forms of legal gaming (Charitable, Pari-Mutuel, Lotteries, Commercial, Indian and Racetrack). Utah and Hawaii are the last remaining states where gambling is completely illegal, though Hawaii is working towards an "offshore” situation with casinos on boats traveling in between the Islands.
