So-Con Betting Free Pick: Samford at Appalachian State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Samford at Appalachian State -7.5 O/U 129
Recommendation: Under

Samford is currently one of the slowest paced teams in the country. Kenpom.com has them listed 336th in the country with 61.4 possessions per game. Even against some of the more up-tempo teams in the So-Con, the Bulldogs have maintained their slow pace throughout conference play. Typically these slow paced teams work the clock in order to come up with a high percentage shot but that isn’t the case with Samford who is shooting just 42% FGs for the season. Even more concerning is that in conference play, they have connected on only 31% of their three-pointers which accounted for half of their field goal attempts. On the road the Bulldogs have had even more difficulties scoring (56 ppg in conference games). The Mountaineers have played a bunch of games of late where the pace was slower than expected. They’ve also struggled to shoot the ball with only a 41.6% FG mark over their last six games. Considering the projected slow pace and Read more

Nevada sportsbooks embrace wagering on non-sporting events

02.10.2011     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
Over the past few weeks there has been talk about the state of Nevada allowing sportsbooks to take action on non-sporting events like elections, the Academy Awards and the World Series of Poker. Previously, they were not allowed to take action on events determined by panel or judge. Lucky's sportsbook director Jimmy Vaccaro is all for the move.

The WSOP, Academy Awards, political elections and more should not be left off the table in open discussions. Booking a national election would make Sunday’s Super Bowl handle look like an "added game."

Duke looks to continue defensive success against North Carolina

02.09.2011     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
North Carolina at Duke -10 O/U 156

36-of-106, 33.9% FGs; 6-of-24, 25% 3-pt; 26-of-42 61.9% FTs

That was North Carolina's offensive efforts in last year's two meetings against Duke. Tonight, the Tar Heels travel to Chapel Hill as 10-point underdogs. After averaging 61.3 ppg its first three conference games, UNC has found its offensive groove and averaged 85.6 ppg over its last five tilts. Duke currently leads the ACC in field goal percentage defense at 39.5%.

Last year's meetings
Duke (-15) 82 vs. North Carolina 50 Under 145.5
Duke (-5.5) 64 at North Carolina 54 Under 155.5

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams said tonight's game will be a "monumental task."

Sports betting investigation delivers high comedy

02.08.2011     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
It seems like every year around the Super Bowl the media decides to run these over the top "investigation" pieces about illegal gambling, the mob, and huge betting syndicates that threaten to take over the world. FOX Memphis put together this gem titled "Turning a Blind Eye to Sports Betting". The best part comes from the video. Fast forward to 3:10 and you'll notice that while FOX was able to hide the gentleman's identity with shadows and a voice changer, they certainly didn't do a good job about concealing what the dude's neighborhood looks like. "Hey honey, that's our house on TV! Were you aware that Vinny not only borrowed your circular saw yesterday but he is also a local bookie?"

NFL strike could mean disaster for sportsbooks

02.08.2011     08:16 AM     Printer Friendly
Now that the Super Bowl is over, the NFL has turned its attention towards labor talks. Too soon to overreact but those is the gambling community are bracing themselves for some sort of holdout in 2011-12. Las Vegas sportsbooks are among those showing the most concern. The NFL is said to account for upwards of half of what Vegas sportsbooks take in.

"About 40 percent to 50 percent of everything that we take in is on football, and about half of that is on the NFL,” said Jay Kornegay, Vice President of Race and Sports Book Operations for the Las Vegas Hilton.

"You talk about obviously the sports books, but you've got to think broader than that,” Kornegay said. “You have to look at the airport, the taxi cab drivers, everybody involved in the hospitality business would be affected by the NFL strike." While nothing can replace the NFL, Kornegay hoped that, in the event of a lockout, college Read more

Orlando Magic struggle when asked to step up in class

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s hard to picture a team that’s more overrated right now than the Orlando Magic.  After gutting their roster with a series of mid-season deals, Stan Van Gundy’s squad is 6-8 SU in their last 14 games.

Those six wins all came against sub .500 foes: Cleveland, Indiana, Houston, Toronto, Philly (by one in OT), and Minnesota.  The eight losses came against Miami, Memphis, Chicago, Detroit, Boston (twice), Oklahoma City and New Orleans, six of whom have to be characterized as “good” teams.  It’s very clear – the new look Magic can beat the weak, but they can’t step in class.

The biggest problem for Orlando has come on the defensive end of the court, bad news for a team that has relied on tight defense during their playoff runs in each of the last two seasons.  Since January 1st, against teams with winning records, the Magic have allowed more than 100 points per game on better than 50 percent shooting.

Orlando is also having real Read more

NFL nixes casino commerical slated for Vegas-only audience

02.07.2011     12:20 PM     Printer Friendly
The NFL flexed its muscle once again by not allowing Station Casino to broadcast a commercial during the local advertising slots of last night’s Super Bowl. The commercial might have made it to air had the NFL not spotted this blog post.

"It's their product, they can do what they want, but are you kidding me?" Curtis told AOL News today. "In our own market, they won't even allow it? It shows the ridiculous amount of paranoia. If they have the power to do it, then they can do it, but I think it makes just absolutely no sense. It's just someone just abusing their own policy."

The NFL prohibits "ads for specific hotels, casinos and other institutions that house gambling" and Read more

Trying to handicap the Cleveland Cavaliers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland at Dallas -14.5 O/U 206.5

Everyone in the gambling community is well aware of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ recent run of horrific play. They’ve lost 24 straight and have been a money burner a 7-16-1 ATS. But in analyzing the line movements on Cleveland’s games, there hasn’t been the feeding frenzy to “play against” most would assume. Based on CRIS’s opening and closing lines, only seven times did we see the closing number “fade” the Cavs whereas the same amount of game moved towards them. In 10 of those 24 contests, the opening and closing numbers were the same – including four straight – which suggests that the oddsmakers are working with a fairly accurate power rating.

In looking at the differential between the pointspreads and final score, 14 of the 24 games landed within five points or less of the opening line. That feat isn’t groundbreaking by any stretch – probably close to league average – but is shows Read more

Firm uses Wall Street concepts to determine Super Bowl champ

02.04.2011     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
Everyone has an opinion when it comes to who will win Super Bowl XLV. This one comes courtesy of the boys on Wall Street who use concepts like "alpha metric" to determine a winner. This year’s verdict according to Analytic Investors LLC , is that the Packers will raise the Lombardi Trophy. The firm has correctly predicted seven straight Super Bowl champs – a mark that comes out to a more modest 4-3 against the spread.

"Over the last decade, the market has systematically underestimated the lower-alpha teams' probability of victory in the Super Bowl," said Analytic Investors LLC of Los Angeles, which oversees $7.3 billion in assets as of September 30.

Friday NBA Free Play: New Jersey Nets at Detroit Pistons

New Jersey +5.5 at Detroit O/U 188
Recommendation: New Jersey

The Nets hit the road Friday night for a battle in Motown against the Pistons. To me, the Pistons just shouldn’t be favored in this range over anybody not named the Cleveland Cavaliers.  It’s been a real struggle for the Pistons to perform night in and night; the chemistry of this group is beyond poor, they don’t listen to their coach and the injury bug has played a part as well.  Currently we see point guard Rodney Stuckey listed as doubtful for this contest, which puts the onus on Tracy McGrady.  Frankly, there’s no one here who can keep up with Nets point guard Devin Harris.  The Pistons play awful defense to begin with – the numbers somewhat hidden because of their slow pace.  Meanwhile, New Jersey is showing some life in the aftermath of the Carmelo Anthony saga.  The Nets have won five of their last nine games, including a very close loss to the Dallas Mavericks.  Read more
