NCAAF Betting Notes: Paul Petrino headed to Arkansas, Illinois staff gutted

12.06.2011     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA vs. Illinois -3 O/U 46.5

In the eyes of some, not having Ron Zook on the sidelines is a good thing. But with Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino bailing for Arkansas to coach with his brother, the Illini players may be in charge of themselves by the time Fight Hunger Bowl rolls around on December 31. Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning was named interim head coach but earlier in the week he made no promises he would stick around for the bowl. The rest of the staff is also busy searching for new employment. UCLA is going with offensive coordinator Mike Johnson as its interim head coach.

“I’ve been in the offense a long time and called plays before,” he said. “I think it’s just a matter of getting back in a rhythm and find a way to Read more

NFL Handicapping: Chicago Bears add to disarray with loss of Forte

12.05.2011     01:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Denver -3.5 O/U 36

Despite allowing just two touchdowns their last two games, the Chicago Bears managed to lose twice and will be without running back Matt Forte for at least a few games. Forte hurt his knee in the first quarter of Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Chiefs. Head coach Lovie Smith said Forte "looked pretty good" at practice on Monday but he is not expected to play this weekend against Denver. Quarterback Caleb Hanie was overwhelmed for a second straight week, completing only 46% of his passes and tossing three interceptions. Rumors circulating that Chicago is looking to bring in a veteran – Donovan McNabb or even...Brett freakin' Farve! Smith Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas State's Freeze takes Ole Miss gig

12.05.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois

Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze was named head coach of Ole Miss earlier today. Freeze was ASU's offensive coordinator in 2010 and then took over for head coach Steve Roberts and led the Red Wolves to a 10-2 mark this year. It hasn't been decided if Freeze will coach ASU in the upcoming GoDaddy.com Bowl against Northern Illinois. Last year there were two examples of lower-tier coaches accepting better gigs before the postseason. In both instances, an interim coach was named. After losing in the MAC Championship, Jerry Kill left Northern Illinois two days later for Minnesota but the Huskies rolled over Fresno State, 40-17, in the Humanitarian Bowl. Miami-Ohio's Mike Haywood left for Pittsburgh following the win over NIU yet the RedHawks went on to beat Middle Tennessee in the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Penn State none too pleased about Ticket City berth

12.05.2011     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State vs. Houston

Penn State apparently isn't too happy with its invitation to the Ticket City Bowl to face Houston (see: player's only meeting Sunday). A few Nittany Lions took to Twitter to voice their frustration. PSU finished 9-3 which was good for the second-best record (tied) in the Big Ten yet they were passed over by Iowa, Ohio State and Northwestern.

Freshman cornerback Adrian Amos: "Oh, I guess we didn't go 9-3."

Junior wide receiver Justin Brown: "Might as well play against concord high PSU vs. CHS."

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 13 NFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC News and Notes from Week 13.

Atlanta
Matt Ryan is throwing picks this year, something that didn't happen very often in the Falcons 13-3 season last year. Ryan opened up this game with a three-and-out, then interceptions on his next two drives. He only threw nine INT's all season in 2010 but he’s already thrown a dozen this year, with a full quarter of the season remaining.

This passing game simply isn't potent right now. Roddy White has been battling injuries all year, lacking the explosive burst that was such a big part of his game in previous seasons. Julio Jones, too, has been unable to stay healthy. Harry Douglas has only three touchdown catches in three years with the team, never living up to expectations. Tony Gonzalez doesn't seem to have much left in the tank at this late stage of his career. We saw drops, Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Fairway Jay and clients enjoy another historic day

12.05.2011     06:22 AM     Printer Friendly
It was another day to remember when my clients and I went 12-1 on the Saturday college ootball and college basketball cards. We had a number of calls, comments and congratulations for the big day of winners. When a big selection card if filled with winners and the handicapping, research, analysis and selections pay off with profits, it’s always satisfying to see customers benefit from the winning results.

My service released seven college football plays and six college basketball plays Saturday – the biggest betting card of the year. Those involved were rewarded with a 12-1 result good for +12.3 units of profit.

Some comments came in mentioning the remembrance of my 10-0 NFL Sunday back in September of 2009. We’ll continue to stay the course and hopefully provide continued success for the rest of 2011 and beyond.

Big Ten Championship Gambling Preview: Michigan State vs. Wisconsin

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan State vs. Wisconsin -9.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Over

The betting markets do weird things, like driving this total down from an opener of 55. The downward move is inexplicable to this bettor. Wisconsin averaged more than 44 points per game this year. Michigan State averaged more than 30. The first meeting between these two schools was a wild 37-31 shootout, a game that featured 41 first downs and well over 800 yards of total offense. Both teams had success in both facets of their offensive gameplan. Montee Ball ran for 6.4 yards per carry; LeVeon Bell gained 5.4 yards per carry. Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins combined for five touchdown passes. Six different receivers caught at least one pass longer than 20 yards. Wisconsin punted only twice on their 13 possessions.

The rematch is being played indoors on a fast track, without any sort of weather issues to worry about. The Badgers power offense works even better in a dome, and Read more
