College Football Betting: The evolution and takeover of the “Air Raid” offense

07.11.2012     06:58 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

For those who like to study the intricacies of football fundamentals then this is for you. This is by far the most detailed piece you’ll find on the ever growing college football fad that is the “Air Raid” offense. I love the fact that it includes the pass happy founding fathers Sid Gillman, “Air Coryell” and LaVell Edwards BYU teams all of which I remember watching.

I do think they should have included “Mouse Davis” who installed the innovative “run and shoot” at Portland State in the late 1970’s with Neil Lomax at QB and with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers who were led by Jim Kelly.

Took me a while to go through the entire article but it is well worth it.

College Football Handicapping: The science behind returning starters

06.18.2012     12:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article by CFBmatrix.com on returning starters. It is common knowledge that the raw number of returning starters can have a significant impact on a team's place in the betting markets to begin the campaign. But there are an endless amount of factors that must also be considered – a topic we will certainly cover in-depth as the football season nears. Anyway, a good read and something bettors should bookmark.

Teddy Covers chimes in on the Golden Nugget's College Football Games of the Year

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As spring turns into summer here in Las Vegas and the NBA Playoffs wind down, the upcoming football season begins to attract more and more betting attention. Last month we saw NFL season win totals hit the betting boards around town, drawing a significant initial flurry of heavy wiseguy money.  And this past week, we saw another clear sign that football is just around the corner, as the Golden Nugget released their lines on more than 110 Games of the Year.

The Nugget is not generally a hotbed of wiseguy betting activity, but their sportsbook takes center stage as the first place to post college football game pointspreads around this time every year. Last year, the book wrote more than $200,000 in handle on the very first day the college football lines were posted. This year, the volume of bets was a little bit slower for several reasons.

First, in 2011, the book opened their college football numbers at noon on Friday, and the place was packed right from the get-go. This year, the numbers opened at 10 AM on a Monday, resulting in slow and steady action as opposed to the fast and furious action we saw last year.

It looks as if we should go ahead and put Georgia on our list of teams to fade

06.13.2012     12:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Is there a team in recent memory with a worse track record of living up to lofty preseason expectations than Georgia? There probably are must it seems like the Bulldogs are at their best both straight up and against the spread when projections are modest. Heading into 2008, they were presason No. 1 according to the AP but finished 10-3 SU and 4-8 ATS. Last year, UGA began the season 19th AND lost their first two games. The end result was 10-4 SU, 8-6 ATS and a berth in the SEC Championship. Similar situation in 2007 with only nine returning starters yet they finished 11-2 SU, 8-4 ATS and No. 2 in the polls. So here we are heading into 2012 and there are rumblings about Georgia running the table – some of it scheduled-based with no LSU or Alabama on the regular season slate. They are the top pick to the win the SEC East according to most sportsbooks and 5Dimes lists their season over/wins at 9.5ov-150.

Oddsmakers not expecting much from the UNLV football program in 2012

06.12.2012     12:47 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Is it too early to start talking UNLV football? Of course not. Bobby Hauck begins his third season after back-to-back 2-win efforts. The Golden Nugget lined three of UNLV's games: Washington State -17.5 at UNLV; Nevada -17 at UNLV; and UNLV at Boise State -35.5. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that 2012 is going to be a tough one. The Rebels return 13 starters (8 off, 5 def). We went back to 2000 and couldn't find a season in which the Rebels had a winning record against the spread.

NCAA Football Gambling: Texas A&M and Missouri play underdog heavy SEC schedules

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a closer look at some of the Golden Nugget's Games of the Year with SEC newbies Texas A&M and Missouri. The Aggies are favored in two of their six lined SEC games – one of which vs. Missouri. The Tigers are underdogs in all six games with three of the six competitively lined at -3 or less. Based on Phil Steele's early season returning starter numbers, A&M welcomes back 15 (9 off, 6 def) while Mizzou has only 11 (5 off, 6 def). In terms of experience playing the SEC, Missouri's most recent game was back in 2007 when it defeated Arkansas 38-7 in the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers also won at Ole Miss, 38-25, earlier that year. Last season, A&M blew an 18-point lead to Arkansas in a 42-38 loss. In 2010, the Aggies lost both SU and ATS to LSU and Arkansas.

Handicapper Teddy Covers on the difference between sharp and square bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the difference in expectations between wiseguy or “sharp” bettors – those who expect to earn a profit from sports betting over the long term – in comparison to recreational or “square” bettors. Here in Part 2 of the article this week, I’m going to examine some of the major differences between the two groups of bettors in terms of their approach and their respective strategies. What are wiseguy bettors doing that recreational bettors aren’t? Read on to find out!

Most casual bettors don’t make a profit from their sports betting hobby. This includes bettors who are relatively sharp as well as those who couldn’t pick a winner if their lives depended on it. That’s not a bad thing either – if every bettor won, sportsbooks would be going belly up and bettors would run out of places to play.

Much of the industry jargon considers money management as important as picking winners, if not more so. And it certainly is. But throwing around buzzwords like “money management” and describing esoteric concepts like “isolate a percentage of bankroll” and Read more
