Betting markets change tune towards Louisiana Tech-Texas A&M matchup

10.09.2012     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
Texas A&M -8 vs. Louisiana Tech O/U 80

Remember back in Week 1 when the Louisiana Tech-Texas A&M game was canceled due to weather? We went back and checked out the Sports Options line history and saw that it closed Texas A&M -7.5 with a total of 59. Fast forward to this weekend's reschedule matchup. After some "decent" offensive performances from both squads (they combine to average 97.8 ppg) we've seen a massive 21-point adjustment in the total. CRIS, who may or may not even be trying with some of its totals, opened the game 73. It has since been bet up a full touchdown. The game will take place in Shreveport, La. Note that the Aggies have a home tilt against LSU on deck. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

College Foobtall Betting: Another favorable matchup for Arizona State's defensive front

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona State -22.5 at Colorado O/U 56.5

Arizona State's defensive front has been a huge surprise this season with 20 sacks and an NCAA-best 10 tackles for loss per game (50 total). Two weeks ago, ASU dominated Cal in the trenches with seven sacks in a 27-17 win. The Sun Devils face yet another weak offensive line on Thursday when they travel to Colorado. The Buffaloes have allowed the second most sacks (22) in the country along with a whopping 40 tackles for loss.

NCAAF Betting: Georgia Tech fires DC Groh, schedule prime for better showings from D

10.08.2012     02:11 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Left with little choice, Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson fired defensive coordinator Al Groh as the team heads into their bye week. The good news is the schedule for the Yellow Jackets get considerably easier from a defensive standpoint with Boston College (66th scoring nationally), BYU (79th), and Maryland (105th) upcoming.

"The season is not over," Johnson said. "It's a chance to move forward and see how we do. We can play better than we've played."

Oregon State at BYU

News just broke that Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is out indefinitely with a knee injury. The Beavers are expected to start junior Cody Vaz against BYU. Sportsbooks have taken down the line for Saturday's game. Prior to the announcement, BYU was a 2.5-point home favorite.

College Football Handicapping: Kentucky QB situation is making us chuckle

Kentucky at Arkansas -17.5

If bet "yes" things can get worse for the Kentucky Wildcats, congratulations, you won. Freshman quarterback Patrick Towles has a high ankle sprain and is not expected to play Saturday against Arkansas. That leaves fellow frosh Jalen Whitlow, Morgan Newton and a walk-on to try and get through 60 minutes on the road. Whitlow and Newton are a combined 30-for-71, 237 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs this season. Here's a link to head coach Joker Phillips' recent press conference.

NCAAF Gambling Trends: Whoever keeps betting Central Michigan is getting killed

10.08.2012     08:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsmemo posting forum regular Collect on Tuesday pointed out that for whatever reason, Central Michigan continues to get a ton of respect in the betting markets despite being 1-4 SU/ATS. Of their six games, including Friday's contest against Navy, the Chippewas have seen spread moves of 4.5, 4.5, 3.5, no move, 2.5, and 5.5 points go in their favor based on CRIS's opening and closing lines. It is baffling phenomenon considering CMU is now on a 4-21 ATS run dating back to the mid-2010 season.

CRIS Opener: Central Michigan -23 vs. SE Missouri
CRIS Closer: Central Michigan -27.5 vs. SE Missouri
Result: Central Michigan 38-27 SU Win, ATS Loss

CRIS Opener: Central Michigan +22 vs. Michigan State
CRIS Closer: Central Michigan +17.5 vs. Michigan State
Result: Central Michigan 41-7 SU Loss, ATS Loss

CRIS Opener: Central Michigan +17.5 at Iowa
CRIS Closer: Central Michigan +14 at Iowa

College Football Betting Trends: Sun Belt mid-week games continue to go UNDER

10.08.2012     06:47 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Thursday marks another mid-week conference game in the Sun Belt with Troy playing host to Western Kentucky. A few years back I noticed that a lot of these non-Saturday affairs were going UNDER the total. In fact, dating back to the 2005 season, 17 of 22, 77% have cashed UNDER tickets (see chart below). The reason? I'm not exactly sure. Some of the games were played on Tuesdays which can't be good for timing/routines. The jitters/nerves/adrenaline of playing a "spotlight game" on national TV could lead to slow starts. For example, last week’s matchup between Arkansas State and Florida International produced only three first quarter points and the game ended up going UNDER by 2.5 points. In last year's three mid-week games, the first halves produced 10, 12 and 14 points. The second halves of those games (not including overtime) produced 30, 38 and 32 points.

Sportsmemo's College Football Week 6 Betting Recap

10.08.2012     05:53 AM     Printer Friendly
By the betting numbers...College Football Week 6 (see results below). Note that we use CRIS's opening and closing lines. We do not include games involving FCS teams.

Based on closing lines…

Road teams won out again by a small margin at 27-26 ATS (Road teams are 144-127 ATS YTD). There was one neutral site game (indicated by *).

Favorite had the edge this week at 28-25 ATS (Underdogs are 145-132 ATS YTD). One game closed a pick 'em (Virginia at Duke).

Double-digits spreads went the way of the favorites at 12-10 ATS (DD underdogs are 80-66 ATS YTD).

13 of 54 games were decided by 7 points or less. 25 of 54 games were lined 7 points or less.

Totals went 29-24-1 Over/Under (144-140-3 O/U YTD).

Beating the Market: If you bet the opening number on a team that moved three points or more based on the closing line (i.e. Syracuse +3) you went: 7-2 ATS (39-23 ATS YTD)

Chasing the Market: If you bet the closing number on a team that moved three points or more (i.e. Syracuse -2) you went: 3-6 ATS (30-29-3 ATS YTD).

Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" 20 times but "incorrect" 28 times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." Note that in six games, the game opened and closed at the same number.

Parlay combo breakdown (52 games) (273 games YTD)
Favorite-Over: 18 (75 YTD)
Favorite-Under: 10 (55 YTD)
Underdog-Over: 10 (63 YTD)
Underdog-Under: 14 (80 YTD)

Note that we did not include pick ‘em lines and pushes in our parlay combos.
