College Football Betting: Oregon State looking to rebound after B2B sub .500 seasons

08.02.2012     12:29 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the past few years we've pointed out Oregon State's tendency to start slow and finish strong from both a straight up and against the spread perspective. Last season, bettors were once again treated to a slow start but because of youth and injuries, the Beavers never recovered. OSU returns 15 starters (9 last season) but the schedule is tough with non-conference games against Wisconsin and BYU. Here's an update on the Beavers heading into fall camp.

College Football Gambling: Texas A&M Aggies Season Over/Under Wins

Texas A&M Aggies
Recommendation: Over 7 (+100 @ 5Dimes)

Texas A&M’s inaugural SEC season should be an interesting one. First-year head coach Kevin Sumlin brings his wide open, up-tempo offense into a conference that hasn’t seen much of that style of play. Typically, the better SEC teams have dominated high-octane attacks from other conferences, but there is often a tremendous gap in size and speed. That may not be the case with Texas A&M.

Despite having no experience at the quarterback position, Sumlin has a very good offensive line with four returning starters (95 career starts). That should help whoever earns the starting nod under center. Obviously they’ll be up against it when facing the likes of Alabama and LSU but against the rest of the SEC, the front line should hold up.

Defensively, the Aggies led the nation in sacks last year (51), but overall the unit was average at best. They allowed 30 points or more points six times and had trouble holding leads in close games. They lost two overtime games and also had losses of one, two and four points. That included a 42-38 loss to Arkansas – a Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Texas Tech brings in fourth defensive coordinator in four years

08.02.2012     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some audio links featuring Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown and defensive coordinator Art Kaufman. Like most of the Big XIII, scoring points wasn’t difficult for TTU last year (33.8 ppg). Brown does however have some concerns about the running game with a few guys coming back from ACL injuries. The bigger issue for TTU remains defense. Mike Leach's teams put up ridiculous offensive numbers but they had some underrated stop units during his tenure. Under Tommy Tuberville, they haven't been able to stop anyone (30.9 ppg, 456 ypg in 2010; 39.3 ppg, 486 ypg in 2011). As a result, Kaufman’s hire marks the program’s fourth DC in four years. One of Kaufman's biggest concerns heading into the season is lack of depth. Luckily for Kaufman, he’ll have plenty of extra “preseason” practice time with TTU facing Northwestern Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Five first-year head coaches in C-USA

08.01.2012     03:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Whatever you remember about C-USA from last year, we strongly suggest you erase it from your memory. There are five first-year head coaches and nearly half the league returns 11 or fewer starters. Here's a quick breakdown of each team.

UCF - Banned the postseason, including the conference championship. Off a disappointing 5-7 year and with 16 starters back, big things were expected.

Southern Miss - Fedora left for North Carolina and they brought in Ellis Johnson (South Carolina DC). Offensive coordinator is fresh from the high school ranks. Five QBs fighting for starting gig. Lost a lot of talent from last year's 12-2 squad.

East Carolina - One of the more stable situations with McNeill in his third year. Discipline and fundamentals still lacking from the Holtz years. -21 in turnover margin in two years under McNeill, +9 average Holtz' last four years.

Marshall - Holliday in his third season. Good coach but mediocre talent. Could benefit from Read more

Maryland Terrapins
Recommendation: Over 4.5 (+110 @ 5Dimes)

Maryland enters the 2012 campaign with far less fanfare and much lower expectations. Head coach Randy Edsall cleaned house where his players are concerned in his first season and then continued by restructuring his coaching staff in the offseason. In comes a highly touted class of recruits to go along with the 16 returning starters and out goes all the problems caused by disgruntled players. Also out are both coordinators, OC Gary Crowton and DC Todd Bradford, who were fired and replaced by ex-New Mexico HC Mike Locksley and DC Brian Stewart who held the same post for the Houston Cougars the past two years. Under Locksley, the Terps will go to a spread option, up-tempo style of offense to best utilize the dual threat skills of junior QB C.J. Brown. Stewart meanwhile has installed an attacking 3-4 defensive scheme which he used at Houston and in the NFL with Dallas.

With things are a bit more settled in Edsall’s second season, the product on the field figures to be more cohesive. There’s a solid blend of talented youth and experienced depth throughout the two-deep on Read more

College Football Gambling: Six returning starters and low expectations for Air Force

08.01.2012     01:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Air Force doesn't typically return a lot of starters year-to-year compared to the rest of the country. Last year's 14 was actually way above their seven year average of about 11. They've obviously been able to function (and succeed) despite the yearly roster turnovers but this season, it's hard to ignore their lack of experience with only six starters (3 off, 3 def) back. It was a similar situation back in 2004 under Fisher DeBerry. DeBerry inherited only six returning starters and suffered his first losing season in over a decade. And not only is AFA down from a raw numbers standpoint, but the shoes that need to be filled are fairly big.

Included in the losses are the school’s all-time leader in wins for a quarterback (Tim Jefferson), the academy’s second all-time leading rusher (Asher Clark) and others who played at an all-conference level (safety Jon Davis, cornerback Anthony Wright, receiver Jonathan Warzeka, guard A.J. Wallerstein, linebacker Brady Amack among them). The Falcons have just two members on the all-conference preseason team this year: outside Read more

College Football Betting: LSU in search of more dymanic passing game

08.01.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the last few years, LSU's passing game has gone from decent to practically non-existent. In fact, there were only seven teams that averaged fewer pass attempted per game than the Tigers last season and four of those teams run the option. That is all supposed to change in 2012 with projected starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger under center. LSU is expected to open up the offense (who isn't these days?) in search of bigger plays in the passing game. Despite a wealth of athletes and speed, LSU failed to convert a pass play of more than 60 yards last season.

College Football Gambling: Mississippi State Bulldogs Season Over/Under Wins

Mississippi State Bulldogs
Recommendation: Over 7.5 wins (+112 at Pinnacle, -125 at 5Dimes)

Mississippi State got a tough draw with having to play Alabama and LSU on the road but in my opinion the remainder of its schedule is very favorable – enough that I bet over 7.5 wins. In fact, while I like what Dan Mullen has been able to do during his three years in Starkville, and I am expecting them to field another solid club, the schedule is set up in a way that if this team matches their output of the last two seasons (a very reasonable request), eight wins or more is a really possibility.

It is likely that Mississippi State will be favored in each of its first seven games. I see wins vs. Jackson State, at Troy, vs. South Alabama, at Kentucky and vs. Middle Tennessee State. Home contests against Auburn and Tennessee will be lined in the -2.5/-3/-3.5 range. If MSU can at least split those two games, we remain in good position to get to eight wins.

The real season starts October 27, when MSU travels to Alabama. Asking for a win in Tuscaloosa is a lot, and I obviously don't project one but note that the Crimson Tide have what could Read more
