College Football Betting Trends: Sun Belt mid-week games continue to go UNDER

10.08.2012     06:47 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Thursday marks another mid-week conference game in the Sun Belt with Troy playing host to Western Kentucky. A few years back I noticed that a lot of these non-Saturday affairs were going UNDER the total. In fact, dating back to the 2005 season, 17 of 22, 77% have cashed UNDER tickets (see chart below). The reason? I'm not exactly sure. Some of the games were played on Tuesdays which can't be good for timing/routines. The jitters/nerves/adrenaline of playing a "spotlight game" on national TV could lead to slow starts. For example, last week’s matchup between Arkansas State and Florida International produced only three first quarter points and the game ended up going UNDER by 2.5 points. In last year's three mid-week games, the first halves produced 10, 12 and 14 points. The second halves of those games (not including overtime) produced 30, 38 and 32 points.

Sun Belt Mid-Week 2012
Thursday, October 11 - Western Kentucky at Troy
Tuesday, October 16 - UL-Lafayette at North Texas
Tuesday, October 23 - Arkansas at UL-Lafayette
Thursday, November 1 - Middle Tennessee at Western Kentucky
Thursday, November 8 - UL-Monroe at Arkansas State
Friday, November 16 - Florida International at Florida Atlantic

Sportsmemo's College Football Week 6 Betting Recap

10.08.2012     05:53 AM     Printer Friendly
By the betting numbers...College Football Week 6 (see results below). Note that we use CRIS's opening and closing lines. We do not include games involving FCS teams.

Based on closing lines…

Road teams won out again by a small margin at 27-26 ATS (Road teams are 144-127 ATS YTD). There was one neutral site game (indicated by *).

Favorite had the edge this week at 28-25 ATS (Underdogs are 145-132 ATS YTD). One game closed a pick 'em (Virginia at Duke).

Double-digits spreads went the way of the favorites at 12-10 ATS (DD underdogs are 80-66 ATS YTD).

13 of 54 games were decided by 7 points or less. 25 of 54 games were lined 7 points or less.

Totals went 29-24-1 Over/Under (144-140-3 O/U YTD).

Beating the Market: If you bet the opening number on a team that moved three points or more based on the closing line (i.e. Syracuse +3) you went: 7-2 ATS (39-23 ATS YTD)

Chasing the Market: If you bet the closing number on a team that moved three points or more (i.e. Syracuse -2) you went: 3-6 ATS (30-29-3 ATS YTD).

Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" 20 times but "incorrect" 28 times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." Note that in six games, the game opened and closed at the same number.

Parlay combo breakdown (52 games) (273 games YTD)
Favorite-Over: 18 (75 YTD)
Favorite-Under: 10 (55 YTD)
Underdog-Over: 10 (63 YTD)
Underdog-Under: 14 (80 YTD)

Note that we did not include pick ‘em lines and pushes in our parlay combos.

CRIS Opener: Boise State -10 O/U 48
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Boise State -12.5

Southern Miss is a complete mess right now, a shell of the team that went a school record 12-2 last year.  We all know what happened in the offseason.  Head coach Larry Fedora took the North Carolina job.  Four-year starting QB Austin Davis graduated as did their top two receivers and a third round NFL draft choice off the offensive line.  The defense suffered even greater graduation losses, including five of their top eight tacklers; weaker on all three units in 2012 compared to 2011.

That’s just the starting point.  New Golden Eagles head coach Ellis Johnson has already seen two quarterbacks go down with injuries, leaving Ricky Lloyd Read more

NC State is expected to start its sixth different offensive line unit against Florida State Saturday. Three o-linemen who started Week 1 are injured and have been ruled out. The Wolfpack are allowing 3.2 sacks per game. Florida State opened as a 12.5-point favorite but is now -17 across the board.

College Football Gambling: Arizona running on fumes after five straight games

Arizona at Stanford -9 O/U 54

Arizona head coach Rich Rodriquez talks about the difficulty of playing five games in five weeks with little depth on defense. The Wildcats' stop unit has been on the field for 417 plays this season.

"As you can imagine, playing five straight games and playing a lot of plays, our guys are a little beat up," Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said.

"We aren't a very deep team, We aren't very experienced in many positions," Rodriguez said. "Any injury certainly hurts just like a lot of teams are experiencing as well. We are barreling through and hopefully it will be a good week for the guys. If it's not and we have guys who can't play, we will put the next guy in and move on."

College Football Betting: Georgia Tech's best defense is to work clock on offense

Georgia Tech at Clemson -10 O/U 74

Lots of great tempo stats for this weekend's Georgia Tech-Clemson matchup. Clearly, the Yellow Jackets are going to do whatever they can to slow the pace of the game down and keep their porous defense off the field.

“You got to try to get some turnovers, force them to continue to execute,” coach Paul Johnson said. “If you don’t give it to them all in one or two plays, make them have to grind it out. They can do that. Clearly, if you watch, they can. But that’s a far better chance of trying to stop them than the other when you give it up in one or two plays.”
