College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies

Marty Otto's Recommendation:

Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida -1 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -1 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Texas A&M -1.5

Texas A&M will experience a pair of firsts this week; they play their first game of the season and their first official conference game as a member of the SEC. I suspect there will be plenty of fanfare surrounding this tilt as ESPN and the GameDay crew will be on hand in College Station. Sadly I also suspect fans and viewers will be treated to a rather boring game.

That might sound like a preposterous notion, after all Kevin Sumlin is bringing a wide open spread attack with him from Houston. The Cougars were amongst the best offenses in the nation while Sumlin was there and much is expected from his offense as he takes over at A&M. And why wouldn't the expectations be there? Read more

Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Georgia -3 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Georgia -2 O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Missouri pk

The time has come for SEC newcomer Missouri to either prove or dis-prove the prevailing thought amongst college football experts that they will struggle versus a steady diet of SEC competition. No doubt the anticipation and emotions at Faurot Field will be overwhelming which could be one of many factors that determine this outcome.

For Georgia, prior suspensions at key positions are now combining with injuries to become a significant issue. Or are they? Georgia head coach Mark Richt has yet to confirm this week whether previously stated multi-game suspensions to star players ILB Alec Ogeltree and FS Baccari Rambo will be either upheld or lifted. Neither played last week due to violation of the Read more

College Football ATS Analysis: MTSU hasn't won or covered a game since October 2011

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida Atlantic at Middle Tennessee State -8.5 O/U 48

Most bettors know that the difference between lower-tier FBS and upper-tier FCS isn't much. So Middle Tennessee’s loss to McNeese State shouldn't come as a shock (MTSU closed -7.5). But what concerns us in the state of MTSU's program. In 2009, the Blue Raiders won 10 games and in 2010, they reached the postseason. Last year, they started 2-4 but were very competitive with three-point losses to Purdue, Troy and Western Kentucky. But since defeating Florida Atlantic 38-14 back in late October, the wheels have completely fallen off. In their last seven games, MSTU is 0-7 SU/ATS and outscored by a whopping 273-99 margin. Six of those seven foes were from the Sun Belt with the other being McNeese. This week's opponent, FAU, provides a good opportunity to stop the Read more

College Football Betting: Florida content to stick with run-heavy offense

09.05.2012     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida at Texas A&M -1.5 O/U 51

Until they establish a starting quarterback and feel confident with the passing game, expect the Florida Gators to stick with a ground-and-pound philosophy. Florida ran the ball 42 times vs. only 21 passes in last week's win over Bowling Green. Note that Bowling Green ranked 104th at stopping the run last year while this weekend's opponent, Texas A&M, was 12th.

"I’m not doing anything that I don’t feel comfortable with, because if I was doing something I wasn’t comfortable with I wouldn’t have come here," he said.

Bettors react to Scheelhaase injury, Arizona State now a 3-point home fav

Illinois at Arizona State -3 O/U 49

According to Sports Options, Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase (ankle) is probable for Saturday's game at Arizona State but one report – and the betting markets – feel that he may not play.

“Nathan did not take reps today, but he was out there on the field working on rehabbing and getting the ankle prepared. He was much better today.”

The Sun Devils opened -2 at CRIS but early action came in on the Illini as they were bet up to -1. Then a flood of money came in on ASU with the current line -3 and headed to -3.5.

Scheelhaase led Illinois in rushing attempts (191) and yards (624) last season.

Western Kentucky head coach not phased by 40-point spread vs. Alabama

09.05.2012     06:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Kentucky at Alabama -40 O/U 54

40-point underdogs? Western Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart doesn't want to hear it.

"We’re going out there and we’re gonna go play football," he said. "If anything, let’s go out there and show we’re not gonna lose by 39 points, we’re going to go out there and we're going to win this ballgame.”

We applaud Taggart's fearless nature. Remember, he was on Stanford's coaching staff when the Cardinal beat USC outright as 41-point underdogs back in 2007.

Unfortunately, he also said preparing for Navy's option wasn't that big of a deal heading into last year's meeting. The Midshipmen rolled up 410 yards (7.2 ypc) on the ground and won 40-14 as -9.5 road chalk.

We're shocked it took until Tuesday for a Texas State moneyline winner to surface

09.04.2012     12:50 PM     Printer Friendly
According to Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Matt Youmans (@mattyoumans247), a bettor made a $4K moneyline bet on Texas State last weekend. He got 30-1 odds which paid out $120K. A few Twitter responses indicate that the gentleman commonly places these types of bets on big underdogs.

College Football ATS Analysis: Bettors fade UConn for second straight week

09.04.2012     12:12 PM     Printer Friendly
Looks like there are group of bettors that don't feel too highly about the UConn Huskies. For a second straight week, we've seen a ton of anti-UConn money come pouring in with NC State up to as high as -6.5 road chalk for Saturday’s contest. In Week 1, the Huskies opened -25 vs. UMass and were bet down as low as -20.5 before closing -21. They held the Minutemen to 59 yards en route to a 37-0 victory. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

College Football Handicapping: Experience vs. Inexperience Week 1

09.04.2012     11:55 AM     Printer Friendly
Taking a look at how some of the most experienced and inexperienced college football teams in the country fared in Week 1. We used Phil Steel's "Total Experience Points" as a guideline. Our experienced group went 8-2 SU but only 5-5 ATS. Note than Eastern Michigan lost to Ball State who was just outside the top 10 with 71.1 points. Our inexperienced group went 5-4 SU and 6-3 ATS (Cincinnati did not play). Note that Miami won and covered as Boston College which had 70.5 points. Obviously our study covers just one game so we’ll revisit our 20 teams around Week 5 or 6 and see where they stand.
