NCAAF Preview: Minnesota Golden Gophers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Golden Gophers program was in steady decline throughout the Tim Brewster era. Minnesota was at least marginally competitive in the first half of the last decade with Glen Mason running the show, reaching five consecutive bowls from 2002-2006, when Mason was unceremoniously dumped. The Brewster era produced only one bowl appearance in four years, and the Gophers 1-9 start to the 2010 campaign was enough to get him fired.

New head coach Jerry Kill enjoyed great success as a program builder at Northern Illinois. The Huskies went 2-10 the year before Kill’s arrival, but they won six games and reached the Independence Bowl in his first season on the job in DeKalb. Kill also had success at 1-AA Southern Illinois. Now in his first stint in a major conference, Kill is expected to replicate that success in Minneapolis. It won’t be easy.

Kill’s first season at Southern Illinois was an unmitigated disaster, as the Salukis went 1-10 before the turnaround began in earnest in his second year on the Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: Wisconsin an ATS burner in 2011?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Badgers have been one of the hottest college football teams in terms of national discussion over the summer months. Bret Bielema’s squad pulled off the biggest ‘transfer’ coup of the summer, convincing former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson to play his senior year in Madison. For a team that won 11 games last year before their tough Rose Bowl loss to TCU, the addition of a big time playmaker at QB with three years of starting experience at the collegiate level has raised expectations to a sky high level.

Let’s not forget how good Wisconsin was last year, with the completely unheralded Scott Tolzien at QB. As a senior last year, Tolzien completed 73 percent of his pass attempts, averaged 9.2 yards per attempt and threw only six interceptions among his 266 passing attempts. He ranked just behind the likes of Cam Newton (Auburn), Kellen Moore (Boise), Andrew Luck (Stanford) and Andy Dalton (TCU) in the national quarterback rating standings.

The Badgers averaged more than 40 points Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Sun Belt Conference primer

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011 Sun Belt Conference has a very visible divide between eight of its nine conference members. Florida International, Troy, UL-Monroe and Western Kentucky are all experiencing excitement for the 2011 season because of returning talent and coaching stability.

ULM and WKU are both in the second year of HC Todd Berry’s and HC Willie Taggart’s systems & philosophies. Season number two brings an expectation of growth and upward climbing into the upper echelon of the league standings. For Troy and FIU who have two of the three longest tenured head coaches in the league, this season is expected to bring a conference championship.

Those four squads all enter 2011 on the upswing with no transition to worry about. On paper, this quartet seems to be a bit easier to read where point spreads are concerned because there’s less guess work into how they figure to perform.

It’s the other half of this league which has campuses and supporters excited for different reasons that puts a Read more

Betting on Auburn: Bottom Feeder or Value Team?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Many sharp bettors here in Las Vegas faded Auburn repeatedly down the stretch last year.  That strategy lost money as the Tigers just got better and better.  Gene Chizik’s squad cashed seven times in their last eight ball games, the lone non-cover coming against FCS Chattanooga in a game they won by 38 points as 41-point chalk.  And yet we saw wiseguy money pouring in against the Tigers in their regular season finale against Alabama, in the SEC championship game against South Carolina and in the national championship game versus Oregon.

Based on the earliest line moves from the Golden Nugget’s Games of the Year here in Las Vegas, those anti-Auburn bettors are fully focused on getting their money back in 2011.  No team on the board got bet down as hard and fast as the Tigers.  It’s easy to understand why.

Auburn has the fewest returning starters in all of college football.  They lost their Heisman winning quarterback to the NFL, as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Texas Tech slated for defensive switch

07.08.2011     08:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There is honesty and then there is Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. Check out this interview he had with the Dallas Morning News discussing last year's failures and what needs to be done in order to turn things around. One of the focus points was speed and defense. Tuberville hired former TCU safeties coach Chad Glasgow to serve as defensive coordinator – TTU's third in as many seasons. The Red Raiders will scrap last year's 3-4 defense in favor of a 4-2-5 scheme.

...We didn't have enough speed last year to play with some of these teams we played against. We were outmatched, and we couldn't catch anybody.

...Last year, I kicked two or three onsides kicks, faked punts, did a lot of things because we Read more

NCAAF Handicapping Update: West Virginia offensive line talks improvement

07.08.2011     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Back in June we posted a blog (see below link) on the erosions of West Virginia's run game and offensive line over the last four years – we dare you to find a bigger slide. Everyone is saying the right things in regards to an improvement this season with first-year head coach Dana Holgorsen bringing in a new o-line coach. Seven of WVU's 11 FBS opponents ranked in the top 50 in rushing yards per game allowed last season.

"I wouldn't say we've struggled the past few years,'' said the fifth-year senior left tackle. "I think what hurt us was trying to run power [football] when that's not the kind of offense we are. Our weight's not up [to where it should be in order] to do that.

"I think we've gotten our identity back,'' Barclay said. "We're a spread-out offense now. We're going to hit the outside or inside zone. We don't have to worry about doing the inside zone and then running power Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: Hype surrounding UCF ripe for bettors

UCF Golden Knights
2010: 11-3 SU/11-3 ATS
Returning Starters: 6 off/4 def

On the surface it would seem difficult to project a program on the rise to become a losing pointspread proposition but I’ll call for UCF to be just that this season. After compiling a 20-6 ATS mark the past two seasons, expectations may be a bit too high for the Golden Knights to achieve. The major reason for predicting a UCF detour from ATS “earner” to ATS “burner” is their 2011 schedule. Even more specifically, it’s the fundamental fit of their opponents. Last season, the Knights inserted freshman quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey into the starting lineup in Week 3 and the team subsequently went on a 10-2 ATS tear. Godfrey’s difference-making running ability along with his passing accuracy provided the offensive spark head coach George O’Leary’s team needed to help their defense which had been pulling all the weight since the 2009 season. However, there are a couple of Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: Alabama has ingredients for ATS success

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s hard to imagine that a public team such as Alabama may have some value to start the season, but that just may be the case this year. Last year was definitely a disappointment for the ultra-talented defending national champs. They started the season ranked No. 1 and won their first five games before collapsing at South Carolina. They went on to lose twice more, including a heartbreaking defeat at home to Auburn after leading 24-0.

The reason the Tide could have value is because of the loss of so many big-name players. Wide receiver Julio Jones, Heisman Award winning running Mark Ingram, first round draft pick offensive tackle James Carpenter and of course quarterback Greg McElroy all moved on to the NFL. At most programs, those kinds of losses would definitely be cause for concern, but in Tuscaloosa, there may not be much impact at all.

The quarterback will be either AJ McCarron or Phillip Sims, both of which are more talented than McElroy. If one of them settles into the starting role, he will have plenty Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Lots of new faces for Georgia Tech offense

07.07.2011     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A breakdown of Georgia Tech's offensive line heading into 2011. The Yellow Jackets lost two-time All-ACC honoree Sean Bedford while tackle Nick Claytor left for the NFL. According to Phil Steele, GT returns only 38 career starts along the o-line with Omoregie Uzzi accounting for 25 of them. Tech must also replace quarterback Josh Nesbitt and running back Anthony Allen (183 ypg rushing combined). Here are some good quotes from head coach Paul Johnson.

It can be hard to fix or rectify chemistry issues. Different things like being hungry and expectation levels and there were some places last year where I did a bad job trying to beat those out," he said. "For those of you who know me, you know I am pretty tough and am not complacent. I am never satisfied in a lot of ways. I think the early Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: What does the hiring of Gary Crowton mean for Maryland?

07.05.2011     01:17 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of mixed feelings about Maryland's hiring of offensive coordinator Gary Crowton. Throughout his 25+ years as a football coach, Crowton has earned the reputation as being an "offensive genius". That however wasn't the case during his tenure in Baton Rouge as LSU's biggest deficiency since winning the 2007 BCS National Championship was lack of offense. But that brings us to an interesting point. Crowton’s first season at LSU was 2007 which saw the Tigers average 35.4 ppg in SEC play. In his first year in Eugene, the Ducks went 10-2 and averaged nearly 35 ppg. In his first season as head coach of BYU, the Cougars averaged a whooping 44.1 ppg and finished 12-2. So in the first year of Crowton's last three gigs, his offenses without question lived up to the hype.

The problem though was the dramatic declines after those initial seasons. BYU fell from 43.1 ppg in Mountain West play to 16.1 ppg. Oregon averaged nearly a touchdown less per game in PAC-10 play in his second season. And LSU dropped from second in Read more
