Las Vegas plays host to smartest criminals in the US

02.24.2011     09:33 AM     Printer Friendly
Seriously. What is with these people trying to rob casinos? And what is with them stealing chips? Another heist took place at the Las Vegas Rio this morning as a man wearing a fedora and fake moustache (of course) pulled a gun on a dealer and ran off with $32K in chips. His getaway you ask? A taxi. No word on whether or not he dropped his cell phone or posted his exploits on Facebook.

NBA Handicapping: Up-tempo style backfires for Chicago Bulls

Miami -2.5 at Chicago O/U 192

There was a lot of talk about the Bulls going more up-tempo with the return of Joakim Noah. Last night, the prediction proved true as the Bulls and Raptors combined for 231 points in a 118-113 loss. According to Chicago head coach Tom Thibodeau though, last night's trading buckets style was a "recipe for disaster". From reading various articles it seems as if the desire to play more up-tempo with Noah back in the lineup was more player driven (Derrick Rose). We would expect Thibodeau to reintroduce the importance of a more controlled game and defensive execution heading into tonight's tilt against Miami.

CBB Handicapping: Shooting woes return for North Carolina

North Carolina -5.5 at NC State O/U 146

After allowing 106 points to North Carolina back in early February, Boston College went with a zone defense last Saturday in Chapel Hill. The move paid off as the Tar Heels scored just 48 points (37% FGs) in a narrow two-point victory. The result was so unlike UNC that NC State is thinking of employing a similar defensive strategy for tonight’s contest. Forcing North Carolina to shoot from outside would be a wise decision considering the Heels are on a three-game run of 37% FGs and 17% 3-pt. The Wolfpack are expected to be without the services of forward Richard Howell (head) tonight. Howell is the team's second leading rebounder.

Bettor behind Donaghy scandal comes out with book

02.17.2011     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another book on the Tim Donaghy scandal is set to hit shelves this April. Gaming the Game is the story about the actual bettors who were associated with Donaghy and placed the bets. James "Baba" Battista was considered by most to be the ringleader of the operation. Author Sean Patrick Griffin paid Battista for his “exclusive collaboration”.

"Bookmakers knew something was going on," says Battista, in his book. "These were the most respected bookmakers in the world. They didn't cheat on the numbers, and they were very good at what they did. The lines were moving so much, and wasn't like there were injuries or anything else that could account for the big line moves."

Odds on How Many Teams Per Conference will make the NCAA Tournament

02.17.2011     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
Odds now available at The Greek on home many teams from each conference will make the NCAA Tournament. We've put together a very rough estimate of teams that are in or on the bubble. The O/U on the SEC (6) is by far and away the weirdest line. The only way you can lose that bet is if they get seven teams in which doesn't seem mathematically possible at this point. With some of the heavy juice towards the under, it is almost as if you are betting whether or not a non-at large team will win their conference tournament.

Gut check time for Paul Hewitt and Georgia Tech

02.16.2011     12:05 PM     Printer Friendly
UT-Chattanooga at Georgia Tech -15 O/U 146.5

Early on in the season following an embarrassing loss to Kennesaw State, we saw Georgia Tech rebound with back-to-back blowout wins at home against inferior competition. Tonight the Yellow Jackets are faced with a similar situation after getting waxed at Virginia Tech 102-77 on Sunday.

Tech plays host to UT-Chattanooga before heading to Duke this weekend. The Yellow Jackets have lost five straight and are a long shot to reach the postseason. Head coach Paul Hewitt was ejected in the loss to VT and the local media has hinted strongly that his tenure may be coming to an end. Interesting to note that since taking the Yellow Jackets to the National Title game in 2004, Read more

Bettors side with computer in Jeopardy Challenge

02.15.2011     10:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the battle between Man vs. Computer, Computer has received most of the betting action. After day one of the three-day IBM Jeopardy Challenge, Watson (the computer) is tied with Brad Rutter (the human). According to BoDog, Watson was the betting favorite at 5-6 while Rutter and Ken Jennings were 5-2.

"The shrewd bettors are backing Watson, while Jennings bettors are more loyalty-based," says Ed Pownall, Bodog spokesman. "The odds strongly suggest Watson will be the winner. If it were more of a level playing field and you had three guys off the street playing, you might see odds more like 5-2, 3-1, or 7-2."

The new trend: Parents who bring their kids to casinos

02.11.2011     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has dropped the hammer on a number of local casinos after a rash of underage gambling. The most recent was a 15-year old boy who played slots at the North Shore casino for "about an hour". How did a 15-year old boy get to and then inside a casino you ask? Simple, he was accompanied by his mother. Back in July, children of the ages of 3, 9 and 11 were also spotted on the casino floor. We can't come up with a viable excuse for bringing your son or daughter to a casino – unless of course they created a Blackjack Super System during recess – so do the normal thing and keep them at home...preferably not unattended either, while you go to the casino. That would be just as stupid.

So-Con Betting Free Pick: Samford at Appalachian State

Samford at Appalachian State -7.5 O/U 129
Recommendation: Under

Samford is currently one of the slowest paced teams in the country. Kenpom.com has them listed 336th in the country with 61.4 possessions per game. Even against some of the more up-tempo teams in the So-Con, the Bulldogs have maintained their slow pace throughout conference play. Typically these slow paced teams work the clock in order to come up with a high percentage shot but that isn’t the case with Samford who is shooting just 42% FGs for the season. Even more concerning is that in conference play, they have connected on only 31% of their three-pointers which accounted for half of their field goal attempts. On the road the Bulldogs have had even more difficulties scoring (56 ppg in conference games). The Mountaineers have played a bunch of games of late where the pace was slower than expected. They’ve also struggled to shoot the ball with only a 41.6% FG mark over their last six games. Considering the projected slow pace and Read more

Nevada sportsbooks embrace wagering on non-sporting events

02.10.2011     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
Over the past few weeks there has been talk about the state of Nevada allowing sportsbooks to take action on non-sporting events like elections, the Academy Awards and the World Series of Poker. Previously, they were not allowed to take action on events determined by panel or judge. Lucky's sportsbook director Jimmy Vaccaro is all for the move.

The WSOP, Academy Awards, political elections and more should not be left off the table in open discussions. Booking a national election would make Sunday’s Super Bowl handle look like an "added game."
