Pro sports teams partnering with gambling entities

05.07.2014     12:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Article in Sports Illustrated about to evolving relationship between professional sports teams and casinos and online gambling sites.

Earlier this year the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia 76ers signed sponsorship agreements with PartyPoker, an online portal owned by bwin, operator of a large Internet sports book. Around the same time Major League Baseball -- having last year dismissed fantasy leagues as "a flip of the coin" akin to gambling -- quietly partnered with DraftKings, which bills itself as "Daily Fantasy Sports for Cash." In 2012 the NFL lifted its ban on teams accepting some advertisements from casinos. The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury have a jersey sponsorship deal with an Arizona casino, while the Connecticut Sun play home games at Mohegan Sun.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look ahead to the NBA Conference Semifinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first round of the NBA Playoffs is in the books; a near perfect storm for underdog bettors.  Dogs emerged victorious in three series: Portland over Houston, Washington over Chicago and Brooklyn over Toronto.  The underdog – Dallas in every game – went 6-1 ATS in the Spurs – Mavs series.  Other series losers like Atlanta, Memphis and Golden State proved to be feistier than expected.  Put it all together and we saw dogs go 32-15-3 ATS for the full 50 games played in the first round.

Should we expect Round 2 to follow the same path?  All four series certainly look competitive on paper, although top seeds Miami and San Antonio are both significant favorites to knock off Brooklyn and Portland respectively.  The series prices for Washington – Indiana and LA Clippers – Oklahoma City are certainly indicative of tight battles to come.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report I’ll examine all four of these second round series, looking for potential matchup edges that could offer ATS value as the series progress.

Indiana was lucky to survive their first round test against Atlanta.  The Hawks Read more

NFL Handicapping: Determining Strength of Schedule

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article from FiveThiryEight on NFL Strength of Schedule. It's been well documented in these pages that using opponents' win percentage from the previous season is essentially pointless in trying to determine SOS. According to FiveThirthEight, St. Louis, Arizona, Oakland, and San Francisco have the toughest 2014-15 slates.

Guess the St. Louis Rams' schedule and win six figures

04.15.2014     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This isn't really gambling so much as guessing but with a little research and common logic someone can at least increase their odds. The St. Louis Rams are offering $100K to anyone who can accurately pick their regular season schedule – including any Monday or Thursday night affairs. Maybe this is a precursor to “contests” involving questions like Will Team A’s game vs. Team B Go Over/Under 47.5 Points?

"In anticipation of the Rams' 2014 regular-season schedule release, we are excited to offer fans the unique opportunity to win $100,000," team vice president of marketing Brian Killingsworth said in a statement. "We challenge our fans to accurately predict all 17 weeks of the team's regular-season schedule and win the cash prize."

Sheldon Adelson remains hell-bent on gumming up the works

04.14.2014     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the better articles we've come across regarding the online gambling vs. Sheldon Adelson saga courtesy of Slate.com. Lots of good links and reasons for you to despise Adelson and his cronies even more than you already do.

Adelson had already begun pressing for a ban through Las Vegas Sands, which spent $320,000 on lobbying in Washington last year. But his formation of the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling signaled a new phase in the political influence game. The group hired former New York Gov. George Pataki, former Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, and former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb as national co-chairmen, and kicked off a national media campaign to convince the public of the ills of online gambling.

MLB Handicapping: Is pitch framing the next big thing?

04.10.2014     08:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every year there seems to be a new sexy statistics that takes the MLB betting markets by storm. With starting pitching being so important these days, FIP and xFIP have a significant influence on how the markets bet a game. Moving forward, pitch framing could be the new craze. It has a lot more variables – an umpire can easily offset a catcher's ability to frame pitches. But overall, the difference between a strike and a ball can have a huge impact on the outcome of a game. According to FanGraphs, the Yankees are currently the best team in the league at "framing" or having pitches that were technically balls called strikes whereas the Cubs are the worst. The sample size is very small but Francisco Cervelli and Brian McCann are generally regarding as good "receivers." As FanGraphs points out, this is not an exact science but with enough data, we should start to see teams that benefit more than others from fringe calls.
