Donald Trump's sister is a judge in New Jersey sports betting case

03.02.2015     01:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Those pushing for legalized sports betting in New Jersey may have caught a break. Donald Trump's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, will be one of the judges presiding over the upcoming case. You'll remember last time the case was in court, U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp, the brother of former NFL running back Marcel Shipp, ruled in favor of the leagues.

"It certainly is a lot less of a conflict of interest than Judge Shipp had," Lesniak said of Trump Barry's involvement. "It's not even close. Donald Trump was hugely in favor of sports betting. But if it's a conflict just because your brother is in favor of sports betting, that would eliminate at least 50 percent of judges."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who has what it takes to win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Last year, the Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played. And I’ve nailed the winner of the NCAA tournament four times in the last eight Read more

Congress slowly changing its stance on sports betting

02.26.2015     12:04 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former Rep. Tom Downey (D-NY) had some logical things to say about the current state of sports betting. Downey feels that members of Congress are becoming more accepting towards the matter.

But, as Commissioner Silver said, “times have changed.” Not the least of those changes is the moral authority of the NFL. Moreover, all major sports leagues now have affiliations with online fantasy league gambling, exempted from the sports betting ban on the argument that skill, not luck, is involved. Knowledge of which players are worth investing in requires some study, of course, but so does deciding whether the Redskins can beat the point spread on any given Sunday.

What has also changed is Congress. Based on my years of working with Members on and around this issue, I sense a new attitude and acceptance that the time is right to do something on internet gambling.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: San Diego Toreros at Gonzaga Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego +17.5 at Gonzaga O/U 133
Recommendation: San Diego

Gonzaga is, by far, the best team in the West Coast Conference.  They’ve been destroying their WCC foes all year, to the tune of a 16-0 conference record.  But the pointspread is the great equalizer, and the Zags are just 7-8-1 ATS in WCC play; not exactly a ‘bet-on’ team.
The Zags are coming off a HUGE come-from-behind win at St Mary’s last weekend, clinching the conference title and setting Gonzaga up as a possible #1 seed come tourney time.

Senior night comes against BYU on ESPN2 this coming Saturday, followed by the WCC Conference Tournament in Las Vegas next weekend.  In between, the Zags have nothing but this tricky matchup against San Diego; a clear flat spot on their schedule.

The Zags have had trouble building margins against the Toreros even when it’s not a flat spot.  In eight meetings between these two teams since the start of the 2012 campaign, the Zags have a grand total of one win by more than the 17 point margin they’ll need to win by tonight in order to cover the number.  Both Read more

Square sportsbook gets hammered by super-square MMA bets

02.24.2015     06:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is funny on a number of levels. Bovada supposedly got drilled following last week's underdog heavy UFC Fight Night 61. We're talking $1 parlays reportedly paying out $25K -- assuming of course it's true and not the marketing department looking to take advantage of Darren Rovell which in hindsight seems WAY more likely than Bovada actually paying out $85K on an across-the-board underdog parlay.

"We take in so much more money on the NFL or the NBA that when you have these types of parlay winners, it's hard to hurt [our business]," Bradley said. "With UFC, this will be hard to come back from."

"Normally, going into an event, I know what we need," Bradley added. "But I was focused on the Oscars and the Daytona 500, both of which we were ... doing well on. What happened with UFC is just so rare."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Sports betting becoming part of mainstream

02.09.2015     08:35 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Something remarkable is happening in the world of sports betting right now; a strong push towards nationwide acceptance and legalization of our favorite pastime.  I moved to Las Vegas in 1998 and I’ve never seen anywhere close to the level of positive momentum that sports betting is enjoying here in February, 2015.  What has changed and why is it changing when it comes to broader attitudes about sports betting?  Read on to find out.

Over the course of the last few months, there has literally been a paradigm shift is how sports betting is viewed nationally.  I did a TV interview for PBS Newshour before the Super Bowl; an interview that was excerpted in a nine minute piece on the national nightly news about sports betting here in Vegas and across the country from a fairly conservative news organization.  If that’s not an indicator that sports betting has moved to the mainstream, I don’t know what is!

New NBA Commissioner Adam Sliver spent many of his formative years as a league administrator overseas as the league’s deputy commissioner.  His quote from David Purdum’s excellent article in ESPN The Magazine Read more

Look at all the stuff pro athletes will bet on

02.06.2015     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
So ESPN did a poll on sports betting with a bunch of professional athletes. The results aren't going to wow you -- 63% said "yes" to sports betting and only 3% said games were fixed to name a few. What's interesting though is the crazy stuff players admitted to betting on just to pass the time. Chugging milk, rock-paper-scissors, and our personal favorite, racing snakes?!?
