Chuck Barkley lost big on the Atlanta Falcons

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charles Barkley, our favorite loveable sports betting loser, reportedly lost $100K betting on the Atlanta Falcons.

“Charles is down there and we’re having fun,” White recalled, according to Brad Rowland of UPROXX. “He’s like ‘I just bet $100K on the Falcons.’ I was like, ‘Don’t worry, just get your chips ready. Everything’s gonna be great.’”

NHL Handicapping: Recent rule change results in more games going over the total

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier this month, the NHL introduced a mandatory equipment change for goalies. They now must wear streamlined pants which are tighter, rounder, and more form-fitting. It supposed to be more comfortable for goalies but also opens up the possibility for more goals. The league's overall totals record this season is currently 362-361 O/U. But since the equipment change was implemented last Saturday, games have gone 32-25-6 O/U which comes out to 56% "overs." It’s not a jaw dropping number by any stretch but it does point to the NHL’s attempt to give fans more offense. More changes are reportedly on the horizon and expected to be introduced prior to the start of the 2017-18 campaign. The recent trend towards the “over” is something worth monitoring in the weeks to come as goalies around the league continue to adjust.

Let's also discuss a trio of teams that have been strong to "over" in recent weeks. The Minnesota Wild have been on one of the longest running totals streaks I’ve seen during my near decade run of betting the NHL. Since December 13, the Wild have gone a remarkable 21-4-3 O/U. This is a talented offensive group Read more

Sportsbook gets burnt thanks to Patriots' love of "heads"

02.09.2017     08:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Funny story about Bookmaker hanging a bad number despite New England's propensity to call "heads" on the coin toss.

SIEGEL: Bookmaker.eu, based in Costa Rica, posted even odds on the Patriots coin toss for about 48 hours last week. That was more than enough time for professional gamblers to notice and to bet heavily on heads.

MCEVERS: Scott Cooley is a representative for Bookmaker. He says they took the bet off the board as soon as they realized what was going on. They eventually reposted it at more favorable odds, but the damage was done. All that was left was to wait for the inevitable.

SCOTT COOLEY: We were sitting around watching the coin toss hoping they might divert from the norm and call tails, but, alas, it did not happen.

MCEVERS: Cooley says the mistake cost Bookmaker somewhere in the low five figures, but they're taking it all in stride.

COOLEY: We're odd makers. That's our business. But we're human. We make mistakes. And, you know, when there's people to capitalize on it,

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Vegas sportsbooks indicate small profit

02.06.2017     09:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Word around Las Vegas is that Super Bowl LI was a "small" win for the sportsbooks. The action on the game was fairly balanced but what hurt was all of the plus-price in-game wagers on New England. The good news for the books was that the game didn't land 3.

“In-play was the killer. That was, by far, the worst thing that ever happened,” William Hill sports book director Nick Bogdanovich said. “Everybody was taking the big plus price on New England when they were down 28-3.

“Any time a real good team gets down in any sport, it’s always bad. And you magnify it on the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They had infinite opportunities to take them on the money line, to take a little to make a lot.”

Super Bowl LI Betting: Very likely Patriots go off a -3 favorites over Falcons

02.05.2017     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below are the top consensus bets (side, total, and moneyline) for tonight's Super Bowl LI matchup between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons courtesy of Bookmaker. Note that the percentages are based on the number of bets made not total handle.

SIDE
67.5% - New England -3 (-105)

TOTAL
56.5% - OVER 58

MONEYLINE
61.9% - Atlanta +133

According to Sports Options' "public percentage", 62% are on the Patiots while 56% prefer the over.

There is still plenty of time (and money yet to come in) prior to kickoff but not one offshore or Las Vegas sportsbook has anything beyond -3 (-115) on the Patriots. And all of the 59's in Las Vegas were taken out. It's very possible that one of the most heavily bet sporting events in the world will close -- both side and total -- where it opened.

Super Bowl LI Prop Bet Pick: Luke Bryan National Anthem Length

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Luke Bryan National Anthem UNDER 2:16
Country Star Luke Bryan will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the third time at an official sporting event and fourth time overall inside a sports venue. He sang in 2008 before the Titans/Browns game on a cold December day with lots of reverb, clocking in at 1:43. Then he opened up the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City with a rendition that went exactly two minutes, and drew a bit of criticism, as he had the lyrics written on his hand to avoid missing any words. Bryan was the first person to ever sing the anthem in US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings (and ironically the venue for next year's Super Bowl) to open his concert back on August 20, in a very classic, slow tempo that registered at 2:29. We've seen the last 10 anthems clock in at an average of 1:58, and the last male singer to perform was 10 years ago, when Billy Joel sang at Super Bowl 41 in Miami in 90 seconds. While we've seen many female vocalists draw out the anthem with late vibrato riffs, I expect more of a straightforward approach from the Georgia native. Play this one under.

Super Bowl LI Prop Bet Pick: Will Either Team Convert a Fourth Down?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Will Either Team Convert a Fourth Down?  Yes (-200)
Somebody is going to be behind in the fourth quarter of this game. Somebody is going to be facing a fourth an inches in the red zone. Both teams went for it on fourth downs more than the average squad (especially the average playoff teams, who weren’t trailing in the fourth quarter all season), and both team were in the Top 10 in conversion percentage.  The key here is that I trust BOTH of these offenses to have a well above average chance to convert on any fourth down conversion tries.

Teddy Covers NFL Super Bowl LI Package [10* Side + 9 Prop Bet Picks] $49
No one is more excited for Sunday's big game than Teddy Covers. His Super Bowl LI pakcage is LOADED this year: a 10* selection on the side as well as NINE prop bet recommendations plus detailed analysis. Dominate the Super Bowl with Teddy Covers for the low price of only $49!
