NFL Gambling Preview: Philadelphia Eagles at Green Bay Packers

11.13.2014     02:41 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Green Bay
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Green Bay -5.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Green Bay -6 O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Green Bay -5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Philadelphia

Green Bay is coming off a near perfect game, absolutely annihilating the Chicago Bears from start to finish.  Aaron Rodgers was at his best, tying the all time NFL record with six touchdown passes before halftime.  "We just kind of got things going our way. The line did a good job of giving me time to extend plays. If you extend plays, you look down the field and there's Jordy Nelson. He made some nice catches." That win improved the Packers record following a bye week under Mike McCarthy to 9-0 ATS.

The last time the Packers played a near perfect game (destroying Carolina), they followed it up with a clunker the following week in New Orleans.  Following another near Read more

NFL Betting: Detroit playing good football AND getting the favorable bounces

11.13.2014     11:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Detroit's good fortunes this season. Last year was littered with close, coin flip type outcomes that went the way of the opposition. This year, the tide has turned and the Lions are winning those types of games. Case in point: three straight wins by margins of 1, 1, and 4. That's not to say the Lions aren't a good football team -- most notably a defense that is tied with Denver for the best yard per play (4.7) allowed mark in the league. That and they are +2 in turnover margin vs. -12 last season.

"It's the NFL. Every game is somewhat close," Quin said. "I think throughout the journey, you need these games. You need games of adversity, you need games where you have to try to come back, you need games where you've got to try to keep a lead. You need all of those type of games, because we're in a situation now where each week, every game gets bigger."

Christie calls out sports leagues ignoring sports betting realities

11.13.2014     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chris Christie points out the painfully obvious as he discusses how delusional sports leagues are about sports betting.

“What we know is, is sports gaming is going on every day in New Jersey in the shadows,” Christie explained. “And why shouldn’t we allow our tracks and our casinos, if they want to do that, to be able to do that? Make it their decision, but if they want to take those bets, why shouldn’t they? Shouldn’t people feel a little bit more secure making bets in places like that?”

“I find it very funny that their just not in touch with the reality of what’s going on every day,” Christie said. “The idea that they have shows on every Sunday to talk about the point spread. What relevance does the point spread have to a NFL game if it’s not about gambling?

College Football Betting Preview: Utah Utes at Stanford Cardinal

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Utah at Stanford
Saturday, 3 pm PT - PAC-12 Network
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -8 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: Stanford -7.5 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -8
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: See analysis

Last week I was finally able to cash in against Utah as the Utes were smoked at home by Oregon, 51-27. The Ducks moved the ball with relative ease and took a page out of Utah's book by posting a +3 turnover margin. The loss was a real gut punch for Utah with multiple injuries and elimination from the PAC-12 South race. Meanwhile Stanford has had a week to recover from its own Oregon disaster and the realization it is playing for a second-tier bowl.

Utah has amazingly been outgained in seven straight games by an average of 86 ypg. The fact that they posted a winning record during that span and more importantly a 5-2 ATS mark is a testament to this squad’s grit and hard-nosed nature. Read more

NFL Gambling: Week 11 features the two highest totals of the season

11.11.2014     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We talking during the preseason that given the rules changes in the NFL bettors would likely witness totals reach this 60's this season. Amazingly, it has yet to happen with betting market resistance on anything in the mid- to high-50's. This week however we have the two highest totals of the season with Philadelphia-Green Bay at 57 and New England-Indianapolis at 57.5. Quick breakdown of some of the results from totals above 50 this year...

50 or higher
12 overs, 4 unders, 2 pushes

54 or higher
3 overs, 1 under, 1 push

Last season, the highest total was 58 with Denver beating Philadelphia 52-20. In 2012, New Orleans-Detroit had a total of 59.5 with the Saints winning 45-28. The last time an NFL game closed with a total above 60 was 2000 when the Rams and 49ers produced 58 points with a total of 62.

NFL Handicapping: Philadelphia and Sanchez look good, pointspread vs. Green Bay shifts

11.11.2014     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another example of how week-to-week performances in the NFL impact pointspreads. In yesterday's Opening Line Report podcast with Teddy Covers we discussed the look-ahead lines for the Philadelphia-Green Bay matchup. The Westgate had Green Bay -6 while a few offshore sportsbooks were showing -6/-6.5. The Packers were obviously off an impressive showing as they destroyed the Bears 55-14. The thought was if the Eagles "looked good" on MNF vs. the Panthers, the line would likely come -6. If they struggled, perhaps as high as -7. Instead, Philly rolled and Mark Sanchez looked like the second coming of Peyton Manning. So instead of -6 the prevailing number is currently -4.5. Not a huge difference but significant enough to warrant mention and another example of the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately mentality of sports betting.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC News and Notes

11.10.2014     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns went into Thursday Night’s matchup at Cincinnati with a winning record, but without much respect from the betting markets.  Cleveland had spent the last month feasting on the weak, facing off against the likes of the Titans, Jaguars, Raiders and Bucs in their previous five games; arguably the four worst teams in the NFL.  The Browns didn’t blow out any of those squads; locked in tight, competitive games each time except their only loss during that span – a blowout defeat at Jacksonville.

Without pro bowl center Alex Mack in the lineup over their previous three games, the Browns offense became completely one-dimensional; a team that couldn’t run the football one iota.  Against Tampa’s shoddy rush D, it was 26 carries for 50 yards.  The week before, it was 25 rushes for 39 yards.  The week before that, it was 30 rushes for 69 yards.  That’s less than two yards per carry against weaklings.

So what did the Browns do in their step-up game on Thursday Night at Cincinnati?  Simple – they dominated on both sides of the football, start to finish, rushing for 170 yards and Read more
