NFL Gambling Preview: Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle at San Diego
Sunday, 1 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -5 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Seattle -6 O/U 44
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Seattle -5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Seattle

The recent history of defending Super Bowl Champions has not been a good one.  No team since the New England Patriots following their 2003 Super Bowl title has even won a single playoff game the following season. The last two defending champs – the Giants and Ravens – failed to make the playoffs the year after their title.

But Seattle is a different animal compared to recent Super Bowl champs.  Three things make the Seahawks different.  First, their coaching staff didn’t get raided this past offseason, as they return both coordinators.  The historical norm is that Super Bowl winning teams tend to lose some of their coaching talent in the offseason, but there’s full continuity for the Read more

NFL Gambling News: Vegas sportsbooks make out like bandits in Week 1

09.10.2014     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big opening week in the NFL for Las Vegas sportsbooks as multiple "ugly" underdogs cashed tickets.

“This was the best opening day we’ve ever had here,” said Golden Nugget sports book director Tony Miller. “Just about every game we needed came through for us beginning with our biggest, the Falcons, and then the rest just followed suit like the Browns, Dolphins and then the Panthers. It wasn’t a good day for those that bet parlays on the afternoon.”

“There was so much public money on Denver and even when I raised it higher than the market number, I was still getting action on them with limit straight bets and parlays,’ said Miller. “They couldn’t get enough of Denver.”

NFL Betting News: Eagles' offensive line short on healthy bodies

Philadelphia at Indianapolis -3 O/U 53

Injury concerns for Philadephia's offensive line following all-Pro left guard Evan Mathis' MCL tear. He's out indefinately along with right tackle Allen Barbre (ankle). Barbre was filling in for Lane Johnson who is currently serving a four-game suspension. All told, the Eagles have six healthy linemen.

NFL Handicapping: New England's offensive line faces another tough front seven

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New England -3 at Minnesota O/U 49

Last week against Miami, New England's offensive line was manhandled for much of the game. The Dolphins recorded four sacks on Tom Brady and a ton of hurries. This week's opponent, Minnesota, present a similar challenge. The Vikings notched five sacks and helped force two interceptions in their 34-6 domination of the Rams. New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels couldn’t pinpoint the exact root of the problem but pointed to the heat on humidity of Miami as a contributing factor.

“I don’t think there was one thing in particular,” McDaniels said. “I think you have to do a good job of being technically sound in terms of your protection to avoid pressure on the passer, obviously. Give credit to Miami; they deserve it. They did a good Read more

Sports Betting Update: Monmouth Park hopes to take NFL bets this Sunday

09.09.2014     09:37 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

New Jersey is expected to start offering sports betting as soon as this weekend. If not then within the next 30 days. Monmouth Park has reportedly been in talks with sportsbook heavyweight William Hill.

“I got calls from people who wanted to come to the track last night to bet,” he said.

He added that if the book is open Sunday – the main day for heavily bet NFL football games – it would probably be a “very basic operation.”

NFL Monday Night Football Betting Consensus: Public digs both games over the total

09.08.2014     02:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the top consensus bets (sides, total, and moneyline) for tonight's two Monday Night Football games courtesy of Bookmaker. The biggest move was what appeared to be a set-up: Detroit slow played throughout the week up to as high as -6.5 before a flood of New York money dropped the line to -4.5. Don't tell that to the betting public though with 64.9% of bets placed on the Lions. Note that the percentages are based on the number of bets made not total handle.

SIDES
64.9% - Detroit -4.5
59.4% - San Diego +2.5

TOTALS
76.2% - OVER 45 NY Giants-Detroit
71.2% - OVER 46 San Diego-Arizona

MONEYLINES

81.0% - San Diego +120
60.8% - NY Giants +190

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Under- and over-reacting to early season football results

09.08.2014     07:50 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I probably heard the same expression 20 times last week: ‘Don’t overreact to Week 1 results.’   It’s one of those handicapping mantras that we hear every year right around this time – the very beginning of football season.

In basketball or baseball there’s no week off between the first two games and the early season betting markets don’t react intensely off a single poor performance.  But for football – both NFL and college – the prevailing conventional wisdom is that Week 1 results are a thing to take with a grain of salt.

The concept certainly makes sense.  Coaches – especially college football coaches – will tell you that they expect their biggest improvement between Week 1 and Week 2.  Without the benefit of preseason games or even scrimmages against opposing squads, teams often ‘work out the kinks’ and ‘get up to game speed’ in their initial contest.  The team you expected to see this year (at least for bettors who do some homework and have opinions coming into the campaign) might not be the team you saw in Week 1, but there’s Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Losing week for SuperContest Week 1 consensus picks

09.08.2014     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Same results, different season. Regardless of what happens with tonight's Lions-Giants game, SuperContest conesus plays (top five) took a net loss. The two most popular picks, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh, both failed to cover. So did New Orleans as the Saints fell in OT to Atlanta, 37-34. The lone underdog of the top five, Tennessee (+3.5) crushed Kansas City. The Lions (-5.5) are still pending. Last year's top five consensus picks were well below .500.
