NFL Handicapping: CRIS vs. Cantor Gaming Summer Lines - Week 15

Back in early May, Cantor Gaming posted lines on every NFL regular season game. We took those lines and stacked them up against the current market numbers at CRIS. It's a good handicapping tool to identify some of the changes in opinion the market has had over the course of the regular season.

NFL Handicapping: Rams bummed about another postseason absence

12.10.2013     12:16 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans -5.5 at St. Louis O/U 47

The St. Louis Rams haven't made the playoffs since 2004. Following back-to-back losses that dropped them to 5-8, they appear well aware they won’t be playing in January.

“I’ve been here before, unfortunately too many times,” said defensive end Chris Long.

“Whenever you take the field, you’ve got the logo on your helmet, and your name on the back of your jersey. And you’ve got your teammates to play for,” Long said. “We have a responsibility to play good football.”

“It’s disappointing. It’s more disappointing these days when you lose ballgames, especially when you feel like you can win them. Because you know you have enough to win.”

Monday Night Football Betting Recap: Bears roll past awful Cowboys defense

12.10.2013     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

The Dallas defense…which is bad at tackling in the best of conditions…REALLY didn’t want to play physical football in the sub-zero wind chill of a December night in Chicago. The Bears scored on their first eight drives of the evening. The ninth was taking a knee to run the final second off the game clock before everyone could head to the locker to warm up.

Chicago 45 (-2), Dallas 28

Dallas: 342 yards, 6.0 per-play, 0 turnovers, 50% third downs

Chicago: 498 yards, 7.1 per-play, 0 turnovers, 73% third downs

Other Numbers

Dallas: 198 rush, 14-25-0-144 passing, 28 drive points, 24 stat score, 11 sloppiness

Chicago: 150 rush, 27-36-0-348 passing, 32 drive points, 29 stat score, 9 sloppiness

For those of you wondering, the pace factor was a very low 133. The ultimate clock eating game because neither team wanted to stay out in those conditions. And, Chicago loves running clock anyway. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: How to bet college football bowl games

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
During football season, I usually write about the NFL every week.  But it wasn’t easy to make broad generalizations about teams on a Sunday in which more than half the games were significantly affected by snowy or frigid weather.  And the college football bowl pairings were announced on Sunday Night.  So, I made the executive decision to take a one week break from the NFL this week to discuss my personal strategies for winning during bowl season.

Motivation is the key factor for any bowl game.  Overall talent and team speed don’t mean a thing when the players don’t give a hoot about being there.  That’s why underdogs tend to do fairly well against the spread in the earlier bowl games.  It’s not a reward for a favorite to end up in front of a sparse crowd in Boise or Detroit facing a team they’re not particularly excited about playing, especially if their second tier bowl bid came as a result of a relatively disappointing campaign.

Always check the local newspapers, blogs and yes, even twitter feeds for clues about any team’s level of preparation and Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -10.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -10 O/U 56.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma State -8.5
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Oklahoma

Weather will likely play a role here as frigid conditions are expected (15 degrees at kickoff) for this 11 am local start on Saturday morning. Oklahoma State has plenty of incentive here as the Big XII title along with the affiliated BCS berth into the Fiesta Bowl are theirs if they win. Oklahoma meanwhile cannot win the Big XII and they appear virtually locked into the December 30th Alamo Bowl. With no opportunity to upgrade their status, the Sooners will be playing strictly for pride in this edition of “Bedlam” and their intensity level has already shown to be extremely high this week. Senior center Gabe Ikard refused to recognize his team as playing the spoiler Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

Miami at Pittsburgh
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -3.45 O/U 41.5
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 40.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Pittsburgh -4
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Under

Both the Steelers and the Dolphins are fundamentally flawed football teams, yet both remain very ‘live’ in the AFC Playoff picture.  The 6-6 Dolphins are currently tied with Baltimore for the #6 seed in the AFC, while the Steelers rank just one game behind with four left to play.  That being said, neither team can like their chances if they lose this week.  We should expect a maximum intensity playoff-level showdown as a result.

The Steelers chances took a real blow last week with their loss at Baltimore, unable to convert the game tying two point try at the end of regulation.  But that defeat didn’t end their season, not by any stretch of the imagination.  QB Ben Read more
