NBA Handicapper Free Play: Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Orlando -2 at Atlanta O/U 178
Recommendation: Over

The Magic regained their offensive confidence on Tuesday night and figure to continue that tonight. Three-point shooters Ryan Anderson and Jason Richardson along with reserve JJ Reddick all had solid perimeter games while starting forward Brandon Bass contributed inside. The widespread team success with limited help from Dwight Howard (29 minutes, 1-4 FGs) bodes well for tonight. Expect the deep and playoff experienced surrounding cast to support Howard who should bounce back with much better point production. For Atlanta, their 36.2% shooting performance in Game 5 looked lackadaisical and uninterested. Have to believe head coach Larry Drew and his troops will correct the poor effort and return to the 44.7% mark they had been shooting for the series prior to Tuesday. After a quartet of consecutive “unders”, look for these teams to shoot well enough to get above the extremely low total.

NHL Playoff Betting Preview: Nashville vs. Vancouver

Western Conference Semifinals
No. 1 Vancouver vs. No. 5 Nashville

Both teams were tested in their opening round matchups; Vancouver a bit more then it had bargained for after being up 3-0 in the series against the Blackhawks.  The Canucks escaped with a Game 7 OT win; perhaps the wake-up call they needed.  Nashville should not be taken lightly as it contained some of the hottest players in the NHL during a 4-2 series win over Anaheim.

All four regular season games between these two teams were tight defensive battles that went under the total.  It is interesting to point out that in almost every matchup the Vancouver defense was in some way banged up and now that they have a healthy blueline corps and their speed may be a bit too much for Nashville to handle.  That being said, the Predators are almost 100% healthy as the return of Sullivan, Tootoo, and Erat made a huge difference against the Ducks.

MLB Handicapping: Can it get any worse for the Minnesota Twins?

04.28.2011     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In all reality, it is amazing that Minnesota Twins are 9-13 when you consider the current state of the roster.

Michael Cuddyer - Moved to second base because of an injury to Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Cuddyer has spent much of his career as an outfielder as well as first and third base.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka - Entered the season as the projected starting second baseman. On the DL with a broken leg.

Carl Pavano - Suffering from flu-like symptoms; start pushed back to Sunday.

Joe Nathan - Coming off Tommy John surgery. 9.82 ERA, 2 blown saves.

Joe Mauer - Only 34 at-bats. On the DL with bilateral leg weakness, viral infection.

Delmon Young - Just placed on the DL with a rib injury.

Jim Thome - Has been out since Sunday with an oblique injury. Expected to play Thursday.

Francisco Liriano - Clearly not right with 24 earned runs (9.13 ERA) and Read more

NHL Handicapping: Road teams 8-2 in Game Sevens last two years

04.26.2011     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
Three Game Sevens set for the opening round of the NHL Playoffs. Two of those scenarios take place tonight with eighth seed Chicago at top seed Vancouver and seventh seed Buffalo at second seed Philadelphia. Over the last two years, road teams in Game Sevens are a very strong 8-2 SU. The trend seems somewhat random as the five previous playoffs saw home teams go 11-7 SU.

Antigua says United States violated WTO agreement

04.26.2011     08:51 AM     Printer Friendly
Antigua has considered bringing legal action against the United States for violation of World Trade Organization agreements. Antigua, home of Absolute Poker, feels that the U.S. is infringing on their right to create economic commerce. The U.S. responded by saying, “What’s an Antigua?”

"The WTO ruled that these kinds of laws criminalising the provision of remote gaming services are contrary to the obligations of the United States under the WTO agreements," said Mendel, in a statement issued here.

"The United States, being a very heavy user of the WTO rules to its own benefit, simply cannot continue to prosecute persons for engaging in legitimate international commerce," he added.

"Given the time that has been spent by the Antiguan Government on sincere attempts to negotiate a reasonable settlement with the Read more

MLB Handicapping: Cubs defense continues horrid play

04.26.2011     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

We spoke yesterday about how Chicago's poor defense could perhaps keep a pitcher like Matt Garza from reaching his full potential. That theory was on full display last night as Garza allowed four unearned runs in a 5-3 loss to the Rockies. Shortstop Sterling Castro's THREE! errors in the second inning led to three runs. And in the fifth, Garza got into the act with a throwing error that led to another unearned run. Tough to back a team that is prone to errors, has limited range, AND is consistently overvalued in the betting marketplace.

Defensive Rankings/Numbers
4th most errors - 20 in 28 games
t-2nd fewest double plays - 13 in 28 games
4th lowest fielding pct. - .976
2nd lowest defensive efficiency - .652
3rd most runs allowed per game Read more

MLB Bullpen Report: Late innings could be an issue for Phillies

04.25.2011     11:40 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The throwing elbow injury that has landed Philadelphia closer Jose Contreras on the 15-day DL with no timetable for his return could leave the bullpen vulnerable. With late innings lefty JC Romero already on the DL and not scheduled to come off until May 3, this bullpen bears watching over the next week and a half. The starting staff has been as good as advertised but they've already accumulated the fourth most innings pitched in MLB (135.2). The strain on the rotation now becomes even stronger with bullpen thinning out. Ryan Madson was moved into the closer’s role which should provide some stability but the remainder of the late innings is in question. Southpaw Antonio Bastardo opened the season very strong but his effectiveness as an everyday setup man is unknown. Even if you take the half full approach, the rest of the pen is very shaky. Righties Kyle Kendrick, David Herndon and Danys Baez along with left hander Mike Zagurski are all hit or miss at best.

Full Tilt skips out of poker tourney prize money

04.25.2011     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
A televised poker tournament in Wales canceled production after it was realized that Full Tilt Poker seemingly couldn't afford the prize money. The production company stopped filming midway through the tournament when it failed to receive a wire transfer from Full Tilt. The Ireland-based poker company hinted that its main focus was returning funds to U.S. players.

Megan Stuart, Presentable’s managing director, said: “The money hadn’t come through for some of the players, basically the Full Tilt ones. We would have been staging the tournament under false pretences had we carried on.”

Australians may never lose another bet again

04.25.2011     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
In attempts to curb illegal online gambling in Australia, legislation is being proposed that would create a "no losing bet" law. Basically online gamblers who use credit cards would have their losing bets canceled. The thought process is that by essentially playing for free, online casinos would not want to accept Australian players. Australia law prohibits online gambling but there have been no known prosecutions despite an estimated $1 billion wagered every year.

"With voided credit card bets, I have to say there's something appealing to me about online casinos losing their shirts rather than the punters," said the senator. "It would certainly make online casinos think twice about accepting Australian cards."

All three Thursday matchups go down to the wire for NBA bettors

04.22.2011     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
No bets we safe until the final whistle of last night's three NBA playoff matchups. Chicago and Indiana landed right on the number with the Bulls winning 88-84. At CRIS, the game opened Chicago -4, moved to -4.5, then back down to -4 and closed at -3.5. Few bettors if any should have scored worse than a push. Miami moved to 3-0 with a 100-94 win at Philadelphia. Offshore the Heat closed as a 4.5-point favorite while some Vegas shops offered -5. The Heat led by four with three seconds left but hit two free throws to push the lead to six. Philadelphia missed a shot to end of regulation that would have given them the ATS victory. Dallas and Portland were not only right on the number but the total as well. Up five with the ball, the Trail Blazers missed a shot and Jason Kidd of all people nailed a three with 13 seconds left to cut it to three. Portland's Andre Miller hit two free throws to push the lead back to five and then Kidd missed a three to end the game. CRIS and Hilton closed Portland -5.5 while Pinnacle closed -5. The total closed anywhere from 187 to 188.
