Sports betting mobile apps catching on in Las Vegas

03.15.2011     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
The times they are a-changing. Las Vegas sportsbooks seem to be embracing the idea of mobile application based sports betting within the state of Nevada.

"It's a secure way to place a bet. Within seconds of logging in, it confirms your (account's) total, you select your bet and click it once," he said. "I never have to worry about collecting my winnings. I'm not sending my money overseas."

"It's never been easier for me to place a bet," he said. "I've placed bets from a bar or at home. I even made a bet on a game at a wedding this year."

"I'm not going to turn away any bet," he said. "For me, even if you win $200,000 I want you back. We learn from that bet. As we see it, it's part of our business model to learn from the pure gambler. Over the long run, we'll come out ahead."

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Santa Barbara vs. Florida

03.15.2011     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southeast Region
Tampa, Fla., Thursday, 3:50 pm PT
No. 15 UC Santa Barbara vs. No. 2 Florida -12.5 O/U 127.5
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Florida -10.5

Quick Take: Florida skyrocketed to a No. 2 seed after winning 10 of 12 to close the year. The Gators are a well-balanced team that controls tempo. In games with a lead, we’ve seen the pace slow down to a crawl. Florida struggled to score at times but started to show signs of life on offense the final month of the season (76 ppg last five). Santa Barbara is an experience bunch (as many as seven upperclassmen play) that lost to Ohio State, 68-51, in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The Gauchos struggled during conference play (8-8) but got hot at the end. They played two NCAA Tournament teams; a 90-64 loss to San Diego State and 68-62 road win at UNLV. UCSB fits a strong profile of a team not likely to be intimidated by the bright lights. A concern however will be how they handle the long trip to Florida. Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Princeton vs. Kentucky

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
East Regional
Tampa, Fla., Thursday, 11:45 am PT
No. 13 Princeton vs. No. 4 Kentucky -13 O/U 131
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Kentucky -13.5

Quick Take: Kentucky’s body of work when reevaluated looks pretty strong with wins over Washington, Notre Dame, Florida (twice) and Louisville. They also got better as the season progressed; a good sign for such a young team. There were slip-ups on the road and emotional letdowns, but when Calipari asked for more, he got it, especially in the SEC Tournament where they were dominant. Defense was the key down the stretch (61.6 ppg allowed last six games) and something that should propel them past Princeton. The Tigers beat Harvard on a dramatic last second shot to win the Ivy League title in a play-in game. Princeton plays much faster than past years and averaged over a point per possession (104.9) for the first time since 2005. They didn’t however step up in class a lot; 87-60 loss at Duke the only comparison to Kentucky. Read more

Top 10 tips for betting the NCAA Tournament

Submitted by Teddy Covers

When March Madness rolls around, no one is immune to the itch to get in on the action, whether it’s laying down a bet or simply competing in an office pool. I’ll share my top 10 NCAA tournament strategies in this article. There are no surprises here – veteran bettors know this stuff already, but it never hurts to think about these concepts again before the Big Dance begins.

1) Fade teams that looked great last weekend
There’s no such thing as carrying over momentum from conference tournament weekend to the Big Dance. Of the top 16 teams in the Big Dance – the top four teams from each region – only six of them (Ohio State, Kentucky, Duke, UConn, San Diego State, and Kansas) won their conference tournaments.

Many of the top contenders for the national title dropped out early; focusing on this coming weekend as opposed to last weekend. The teams that went all out to secure a bid or win their conference title but came up short, like Penn State, Florida and Read more

Online poker players call out cheats who use bots

03.14.2011     09:08 AM     Printer Friendly
Now that online poker is an established form of gambling, people are finding ways to take advantage of the system. Poker bots, or computer programs masquerading as online users, have been essentially stealing money from actual players. The computer programs were at first not very good but they have developed over time and some are now a very efficient means of winning. Luckily, some astute players have picked up on these bots and have complained to websites like PokerStars and Full Tilt. There are even companies who openly offer poker bots for public purchase. But before you go and purchase one (they cost as little as $129 per year), note that as many as 90% of these products are "losing money".

“PokerStars is continuing to invest substantial resources to combat bots,” Michael Josem, a security manager at the site, said in an interview conducted via e-mail. “When a player is identified as a bot, PokerStars removes them from our games as soon as possible.” Their winnings are Read more

Conference Tournament Finals Betting Notes

03.13.2011     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SEC Championship: Kentucky guard Doron Lamb is listed as doubtful for today's SEC Championship. Lamb (13.2 ppg) hurt his ankle in yesterday's win over Alabama. Deandre Liggins also had ankle issues though he is expected to play. If Lamb doesn't play, it leaves the Wildcats extremely thin. Six players have played a majority of the minutes this season. Eloy Vargas is the team's "seventh man" averaging 8 mpg. Kentucky opened as a two-point favorite but is now two-point underdogs as various shops.

"(Lamb) could be doubtful," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "I don't know. He was pretty bad in there, but we'll … see how bad he wants to play."

Carlisle calls Mavericks soft after loss to Hornets

03.10.2011     09:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following yesterday's loss to New Orleans in which they were outrebounded 44-31, Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle dropped the infamous "soft" label in describing the current state of his team. It was the Mavs’ second loss in three games in which they blew a double-digit second half lead. Being called "soft" didn't sit all too well with the players. Dallas plays host to New York on Friday.

Who said that?" Jason Terry said, scoffing at the accusation after he had an off night -- rare for him of late -- with 10 points. "I'm not soft, not me. I don't know where that comes from, but we ain't soft. We have to see how he meant soft in that aspect, but I know he wasn't talking to me personally or any of my teammates because I don't think none of these guys are soft."

"I think we've just got to be tougher," Carlisle said quietly. "Got to be Read more

NBA Handicapping: Miami tries to end woes against Lakers

03.10.2011     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly
LA Lakers -2 at Miami O/U 188

The last time Miami beat what most would consider an NBA title contender was back on Christmas Day when they beat the Lakers in Los Angeles. Since then, it has been a comedy of errors; most recent the five straight losses. Miami has lost 11 games this season with a chance to tie or take the lead in the final 12 seconds of regulation or overtime. Interesting read on the decline of Chris Bosh's effectiveness.

ACC Tournament Betting Preview

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
To say that the big boys have owned the ACC tournament in recent years is something of an understatement.  Duke and North Carolina have won the last two national championships.  The Blue Devils and Tar Heels have also won 13 of the last 14 ACC tournament titles, with Maryland earning the ACC’s automatic qualifier bid in 2004; the only recent exception to the rule.

Ironically, we haven’t seen many Duke vs. North Carolina matchups in the finals; none in the last nine years.  Duke has made nine of the last 11 championship games, but in the Roy Williams era, this year’s #1 seed has been a consistent ACC tourney underachiever.  In fact, the Tar Heels enter the weekend riding an 0-7 ATS run in ACC Tournament play dating back to their nine-point 2007 Championship Game win over NC State as 11.5-point favorites.

The top four seeds get a single bye before starting tournament play on Friday.  Top seed North Carolina, #2 Duke, #3 Florida State and #4 Clemson all have Thursday Read more
