College Basketball Handicapping: Gearing up for the 2012-13 season

10.29.2012     01:35 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College basketball is just a few weeks away and I'm currently gearing up for what hopes to be another profitable season for myself and my clients. I’ve had three straight winning seasons and feel confident we can make it a fourth in 2012-13. In those three seasons, I released 525 documented plays that cashed at a 56% rate, good for over +50 units of profit on a one- and two-unit scale. Last year was very strong with a 109-76, 59% record and +33.6 units of profit. We make no guarantees when it comes to records and profits – anyone who does is a scam artist – but what I can promise is the same dedication and hard work.

As far as preparation goes, reading as much as I can has and will continue to be the most important part of my handicap. Whether it is preseason, mid-season, or March Madness, articles and blogs written by local beat writers and student newspapers have accounted for a good chunk of my profits over the years. The key however isn't always finding the information (though I have found plenty that wasn't accounted for in the better markets) but knowing what to do with it. When Michigan Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins at Arizona State Sun Devils

UCLA at Arizona State
Andrew Lange's Recommendation:
UCLA

CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -7 O/U 55
CRIS Current: Arizona State -6.5 O/U 57.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona State -3

College football has certainly changed over the last decade with the popularity of spread and pass-happy offenses. But one thing that remains constant is that teams who are sound in the running game tend to be much stronger bets than teams who don't. When I handicap the college football card this time of year, one of the things I'm looking for are underdogs with better ypc and ypca allowed numbers than the favorite. It doesn't happen often because that type of discrepancy is usually accounted for in the betting markets.

In the case of UCLA-Arizona State, our ACCU-Stats show that the Bruins are over a yard per carry better than the Sun Devils. Considering both teams have nearly identical Read more

NLCS Betting Free Play: St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants

St. Louis (Carpenter) at San Francisco (Vogelsong) -125 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: San Francisco

Since his late season return, Chris Carpenter's numbers look fairly decent: 26.2 IP, 9 ERs. Make no mistake, he's been fortunate and hasn't looked sharp. I've watched both of his postseason starts and clearly the stuff just isn't there, hence why he's fanned only three batters and had six swinging strikes. Meanwhile, Ryan Vogelsong had his struggles in late August/early September but has rallied back and allowed three earned runs his last five starts including two solid postseason outings. I supported him in his last start against St. Louis and Carpenter and he didn't disappoint as the Giants won 7-1. Obviously this is a do-or-die situation for the Giants but that is only a small part of this handicap. I've been playing against "damaged" starting pitchers all season and won't stop here.

College Football Betting Preview: Washington Huskies at Arizona Wildcats

Arizona

CRIS Opener:

CRIS Current: Arizona -7.5 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Arizona -4

Arizona has surprised me this season. When a new coach arrives and brings a completely new system, it can take a full year or more for things to click. Offensively, the transition to Rich Rodriquez hasn’t been an issue for the Cats. There have been some hiccups (turnovers and missed FGs vs. Toledo; red zone snafus vs. Oregon) but in terms of the season as a whole, we’re talking about one of the best offenses in the country (551.3 ypg). Defensively is where the Wildcats have had their issues and it isn’t necessarily trying to figure out a system but rather a lack of depth.  Opposing offenses have been able to move the ball at will which is part of the reason why UA enter Read more

College Football Handicapping: San Diego State has edge over Nevada

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego State at Nevada -7 O/U 66.5

Last week I broke down a few college football games using Sportsmemo's ACCU-Stat as a guideline. One of those games was Utah State-San Jose State. The Spartans were a 3-point favorite but the Aggies had significant ACCU-Stat advantages in the run-game – the type of numbers you see with teams laying more than a touchdown. The game played out exactly as planned as USU ran for 212 yards on 8.8 ypc, SJSU was held to 4 total rushing yards, and the Aggies won by 22.

This week, I spotted another underdog with a sizable ACCU-Stat advantage. San Diego State is currently priced as a 7-point underdog at Nevada. To start, both teams have nearly identical strength of schedules Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Play: Oakland Raiders at Atlanta Falcons

Oakland +9.5 at Atlanta O/U 48.5
Recommendation: Oakland

It is a pretty simply formula with the Oakland Raiders; find a way to run the football and be completive or fail to run the football and be one of the laughing stocks of the league. In their Week 3 win over Pittsburgh, Oakland produced a solid 119 yards on the ground at 5.7 yards per carry. In their other three games combined, they amassed a truly awful 124 yards – and lost by a combined 61 points. Today, Oakland has a good opportunity to have success running the football. Atlanta has done little wrong this season (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) but stopping the run has been a chore. In recent games against Carolina and Washington, the Falcons allowed a combined 328 yards at 5.9 ypc. In both instances, the Falcons needed some late game heroics in order to keep their perfect season intact. We can all agree the running and stopping the run in the NFL isn't as important as it was 10 years ago but here I see a team that ranks near the bottom of Read more
