USF +15 at Florida O/U 49.5
Recommendation: USF
Saturday, 9:20 am PT – ESPN 3

Early kickoff Saturday in Gainesville as the Gators battle the Bulls for the first time. New South Florida head coach Skip Holtz steps into a solid situation as the Bulls have plenty of talent and speed to surprise in the Big East this season. And while facing Florida may be a tough task on the road, there was little to be impressed with in the Gators’ misleading 34-12 Week 1 win over Miami (OH). Florida managed just 25 yards total offense through three quarters which reached an offensive low point in the Urban Meyer era. “I didn’t imagine the offense’s incompetence that we experienced today,” Meyer said.

South Florida sophomore quarterback BJ Daniels was solid against smaller Stony Brook, but he’ll take a big step up in speed and class against the Gators defense. Still, the dual-threat quarterback is protected by a very experienced and solid offensive line Read more

Iowa State at Iowa -13.5 O/U 45
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

The classic battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy renews in Iowa City this weekend. This has been an extremely solid home field for the Hawkeyes from a straight up perspective as they’ve gone 51-14 SU since 2000. One should note, however, that the Hawkeyes have not had a winning record against the number as a home favorite in any season over the last four years, with their best finish coming in 2009 at 3-3 ATS.

Offensively both squads return nearly all significant skill pieces from last season. Iowa is breaking in a fairly new group along the front line but that disadvantage may be negated here as Iowa State’s defense is undergoing a massive overhaul. The Cyclones’ stop unit performed admirably last week in a win over Northern Illinois but the step up in competition this week will be a true test.

Iowa State went up 3-0 early in the first quarter last year but the lead was short lived as the Read more

Miami at Ohio State -8.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 12:40 pm PT - ESPN

While the media hypes up this one up as having an enormous revenge angle – most of these players were in junior high in 2002 – it’s a chance for Miami to put itself back on the map as a legitimate title contender after a seven-year absence. The Hurricanes look the part of an elite level team this season led by junior quarterback Jacory Harris. Harris was extremely sharp out the gate in 2009, but consistency issues – and nagging injuries – throughout an unrelenting schedule kept him from stardom. This time around, Harris is poised to take this offense to another level and he’ll have plenty of help as a majority of last year’s skill position talent is back after averaging 30.3 points per game. Miami’s defense is also expected to be stout after showing improvements in each edition under fourth-year head coach Randy Shannon.

Penn State at Alabama -12 O/U 44
Recommendation: Alabama
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN

Both teams got off to fast starts last week with a couple of cakewalk victories. Alabama jumped on San Jose State early and often and was dominant on offense while Penn State actually trailed until one minute before halftime against Youngstown State. Penn State freshman quarterback Robert Bolden started and played the entire game, going 20-of-29 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. For his first start, those numbers are certainly acceptable. However, the running game left something to be desired. Penn State had 132 yards on 29 carries with a long run of just 13 yards against the FCS school. Against an opponent like Alabama, Bolden had better receive some help from the ground game if the Lions expect to stay close.

Another cause for concern on the PSU side was Youngstown quarterback Kurt Hess, who completed 21-of-25 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Do you know Read more

Oregon -12 at Tennessee O/U 53.5
Recommendation: Under
Saturday, 4 pm PT – ESPN 2

No matter how good they looked last week – New Mexico is one of the worst programs in the country and may not win a game – it is unrealistic to think Oregon can travel cross country to a hostile SEC environment and name the score. But Tennessee has plenty of issues and question marks and if not prepared, this one could get ugly.

From a game plan standpoint, UT head coach Derek Dooley likes to run the ball. Last season at Louisiana Tech, he ran it over 60% of the time and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a clock-controlling offense gives his team the best chance to win this weekend. The Vols will attempt to run and dink-and-dunk their way down the field all the while keeping the clock churning. Here is a quote that sums up Dooley’s feelings heading into this game: “When they [Oregon] go on a 10-play drive, it takes them about two minutes,’’ Dooley Read more

Florida State at Oklahoma O/U 57

Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

Regardless of whether Oklahoma showed their entire defensive package last Saturday night or not, it is very concerning to see them allow the yardage and points that they did against an outmanned Utah State squad. The Aggies put together four drives of 57 yards or more and all three of their touchdown drives were accomplished in five plays or less while averaging at least 10 yards per play. The Sooner secondary was riddled for 341 yards on only 17 completions versus a team playing without its most explosive wide receiver. In the end, they were able to pick Utah State dual threat quarterback Diondre Borel off three times with the final one securing the victory. Week 2 of the college football season is annually the one where dramatic overreactions reign supreme but in the case of the Sooners, it’s hard not to feel that their defense might again yield an alarming number of points.

Stanford at UCLA +6.5
Recommendation: UCLA
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT – ESPN

Last season UCLA’s defense was the strength of the team as the offense finished 88th in the country. This season Rick Neuheisel implemented the "Pistol Offense" and against Kansas State it showed some promise as the Bruins ran the ball for 193 yards. The major disappointment was the passing game which faltered in countless third-and-long situations. Quarterback Kevin Prince, who has practiced little because of a torn back muscle, completed only 35% of his passes. Not helping the cause was UCLA’s wide receivers, which with several standout players was expected to be one of the team's strengths. All told, the group dropped eight passes. On defense the Bruins saw a heavy dose of the running game after replacing all four starting lineman this offseason. Kansas State ended up with 313 yards on the ground as head coach Rick Neuheisel placed much of the blame on two weeks without live tackling Read more

Cincinnati at Fresno State -2.5 O/U 58
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 7:00 pm PT – ESPN2

Last season Fresno State one of the best teams in the country when it came to running the ball thanks to Ryan Matthews. With Matthews gone, the Bulldogs are looking to become more of a passing team in 2010. Head coach Pat Hill stated this month that the passing game might be the "lead hand" to the offense this season. Fresno quarterback Ryan Colburn has shown to be a more than capable passer with 2,459 yards passing and 19 touchdowns last season. If the first 10 days of fall camp were an indication of what's in store during the regular season, the notion that the Bulldogs plan to pass more – especially downfield – isn't just talk. "We definitely have a long-ball threat," Hill said. "We've got some speed on the perimeter and we've got some guys that can really throw the deep ball. That's always the combination you need."

Minnesota Golden Gophers Season O/U Wins
Recommendation: Under 5 +115 (@ CRIS)

Last season the Minnesota finished 6-6 and made it to a bowl game. Much more was expected from head coach Tim Brewster heading into his fourth season. Eeking out close wins against South Dakota and Syracuse and barely making it to a low-tier bowl is not going to cut it. This season the Gophers come in with only two returning defensive starters which probably was arguably the strength of the team. Last season the offense was awful finishing 109th nationally and this year with yet another new offensive coordinator they have vowed to simplify things and run the ball more. They have their entire offensive line back but this was a unit that produced the 111th ranked rushing offense last season. I guess with a bad quarterback and the team’s leading receiver Eric Decker graduated that might not be a bad strategy.

Looking over their conference schedule, I don’t think they will be favored in any game. They will Read more
