Big East still without a bowl eligible team

11.12.2010     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
With Pittsburgh's Thursday night loss to UConn, the Big East still does not have a team eligible for the postseason. That is amazing when you consider 49 other teams across the country have accomplished the feat. Note that Syracuse has six wins but played two FCS teams with only one allowed to count towards postseason eligibility. The Big XII, Big Ten, SEC all have seven teams which are currently bowl eligible.

Betting Preview: Iowa Hakeyes at Northwestern Wildcats

Iowa -9.5 at Northwestern O/U 50
Recommendation: Iowa
Saturday, 9 am PT – ESPN

The Big Ten title is still very much up for grabs with Iowa still in the running. Next week on the docket for the Hawkeyes is a huge game at home against Ohio State. However, it’s crucial the Hawkeyes don’t get caught napping this week with their trip to Evanston to face Northwestern. More pressing for the Hawkeyes is two straight losses to the Wildcats, of which they were 8- and 15-point favorites. Iowa avoided an upset last week against Indiana by scoring a late touchdown in the 18-13 win. Still, the Hawkeyes dominated the box score in that contest with 7.2 to 4.5 yard per play edge. In addition, the Hawkeyes were without the services of stud running back Adam Robinson who is listed as probable for this contest.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats must pick themselves off the ground after blowing a huge lead against Penn State last week. The Wildcats started the campaign 5-0, but have now dropped three Read more

Cam Newton saga causes stir in betting market

Georgia at Auburn -7 O/U 65.5

Sportsbooks, oddsmakers and the betting market are all in a tizzy over the current Cam Newton situation. Auburn opened as a 9.5-point favorite over Georgia with a lot of two-way action early in the week that had the line bouncing back and forth between -9 and -8.5. Then today, money poured in on Georgia, so much so that some sportsbooks are now dealing a flat -7 while others took the game completely off the board until they hear more definitive news on Newton's situation.

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik says that his star quarterback will indeed play but according to ESPN Dallas correspondent Ian Fitzimmons' Twitter account, Newton will be suspended sometime today by the Read more

Federer says he was unaware of IMG betting ring

11.10.2010     10:20 AM     Printer Friendly
Earlier this month, IMG executive Ted Forstmann was accused of using inside betting information to wager on or against his own clients. One of the names brought up in the scandal was tennis star Roger Federer, who is a client of IMG. Federer came out today and explained that while Forstmann works at IMG, he is not his personal agent. He went on to deny any involvement or knowledge of what took place. Gotta love Forstmann's quote that he "might" have called his “buddy” Roger before a match and would have "only" been wishing him good luck.

"Tony is my guy, but still, it's a firm that does a lot in sports," Federer said. "So it's just something that for me is important to know what is going on from their side, too."

Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies at Baylor Bears

Texas A&M at Baylor +3 O/U 64.5
Recommendation: Baylor
Saturday, 4 pm PT

One thing to consider with overachieving football teams is whether or not they become satisfied once preseason goals have been achieved. Heading into 2009, Baylor’s main goal was to reach the postseason, something it hadn’t accomplished since 1994. At 7-3, the Bears are not only a lock to make the postseason but en route, they snapped an 11-game losing streak to in-state foe Texas – a historical win for the program. Following official bowl eligibility and its win over Texas, Baylor came out incredibly flat at Oklahoma State and was handed a 55-28 defeat. The lone positive was that the Bears didn’t quit – at least on offense – as they put up 28 second half points after being shutout in the first half. That however didn’t make up for the fact that they allowed 725 yards of total offense to the Cowboys. So the question remains, is Baylor still satisfied or can they bounce back at home Read more

College basketball players weigh in on point-shaving

11.10.2010     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
ESPN the Magazine recently conducted an interesting survey with anonymous college basketball players for their preseason edition. One of the questions asked whether or not players would consider point-shaving, especially if the price was right. The most recent point-shaving scandal took place at Toledo where six former football and basketball players were charged in 2009 with conspiracy to commit sports bribery. The question ESPN the Magazine asked the players is if they were favored by 40, how much would it take for them to win by say, 35 points? Somewhat ironically, Toledo is a 30.5-point underdog at Illinois tonight.

The NCAA's gambling task force will be glad that 75.3 percent of players say they'd never shave points. "Too risky," says a potential All-America. "Your name is Read more

NFL Handicapping: Inside the Betting Numbers Week 9

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Throughout the NFL season, Fairway Jay provides a look at weekly box scores, stats and how to utilize the numbers and situations for success. Jay is currently ranked as the no. 1 NFL handicapper in the nation as documented by the Sports Monitor with a remarkable 33-14 70% record.

Week 9 favorites went 12-1 straight up (SU) and 6-5-2 against the spread (ATS). I graded the Monday night game between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati a push (+6), and the Raiders as a 1-point favorite despite late money pushing Kansas City to a 1-point favorite. Most Chiefs bettors had a ‘Dog wager on Kansas City and the really sharp guys had the Chiefs +3 and pushed when Oakland won in overtime. For the season betting favorites are 54-69-7 ATS (44%). Four division games last week and the favorites went 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS. Division favorites are now 21-18 SU and 15-24 ATS. NFL home underdogs had a tough week going 1-6 SU and 2-3-2 ATS and are 20-22 SU and 23-16-3 ATS this season. Scoring picked up again and totals went 10-2-1 and are now Read more

Penn State reacts to large pointspread against Ohio State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State at Ohio State -18 O/U  49.5

The Penn State and Ohio State series has been competitively lined (single-digits) eight out of the last nine games. In 2006, the Buckeyes were a 16.5-point favorite and won 28-6. According to one news report, this weekend's pointspread of 18.5 in the highest since 1988. If you read some of the quotes, it is fairly obvious some of the Nittany Lion players and coaches are well aware of their large underdog profile.

"It's kind of insulting," tailback Evan Royster said. "We've proved we can win games. I think a lot of people will take offense to it, and I think it will make people work harder."

"We haven't played well against really good teams," defensive tackle Ollie Ogbu said. "There's no reason for anyone to have any kind of confidence in us. That's a good thing. We have a chip on our shoulder. We're up to the Read more

Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Fresno State Bulldogs

Nevada -8.5 at Fresno State O/U 68
Recommendation: Nevada
Saturday, 7 pm – ESPN

In recent years the Nevada offense has done some incredible things but what they did last Saturday was simply amazing. The Wolf Pack put up a school-record 844 yards of total offense in their 63-17 win over Idaho. Three running backs ran for more than 100 yards, and quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for a career high five touchdowns as the Wolf Pack dominated on the ground (453 yards) and through the air (391 yards).

Fresno State is dealing with all kinds of injuries as they head into this game. Cornerback Jermaine Thomas could miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, and the Bulldogs' offensive line likely will require more reshuffling with four of their top offensive linemen currently dealing with injuries – senior center Joe Bernardi (ankle), junior right guard Leslie Cooper (ankle), senior right tackle Kenny Wiggins (shoulder) and senior guard Andrew Jackson Read more
