Even with a victory over Arizona tonight, Arizona State (5-6) technically
will not be bowl eligible
due to its two victories over FCS opponents. The Sun Devils requested a bowl-eligibility waiver from the NCAA but reports say that it will likely be denied. ASU's argument is that San Jose State bailed out on a scheduled game which forced the Sun Devils to play FCS Portland State. There are currently 70 bowl teams eligible for 70 slots with Middle Tennessee State, Louisiana Tech, Oregon State and Washington all with an opportunity to join the mix with victories this week. It is highly doubtful that the NCAA would skip over a by-the-book bowl eligible team for Arizona State regardless of the circumstances. This is undoubtedly the most important game in UConn football history. Can the usually well focused Huskies handle the pressures of BCS implications and win what amounts to a $17 million dollar game on the road is the question. Hard charging South Florida (4-1 SU run) does not afford Connecticut a pushover opponent and in fact, I’d expect first-year head coach Skip Holtz to strongly desire an eight-win regular season. The situational test for Holtz will be whether he can get his team out of the clouds and focused on this contest after an emotionally draining overtime win versus Miami (FL) last week.
UConn’s philosophy of methodically moving down the field with the running game will not change. Led by tailback Jordan Todman the past four weeks, the Huskies rush/pass play calling ratio has been more disproportionate as any non-option scheme. Rushing plays hold a 178 to 94 advantage (65.4%-34.6%)

who will become the next head coach
at Miami (FL). The Hurricanes fired Randy Shannon following last week's overtime loss to USF. Oddsmakers and the betting public are apparently big fans of Jon Gruden, who a couple of weeks ago was listed as the favorite to become the
next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys
. Now Gruden is even money to take over in Coral Gables. One unnamed source (close friend) said that a Gruden to Miami move
wouldn't be the right fit
and he/she expects him to remain at ESPN next season.

Early Week College and Pro Football pointspread moves

Some fairly significant early week line moves for college and pro football. Illinois opened as a touchdown favorite at Fresno State but Pat Hill's crew earned nearly all of the early money. Note that Illini head coach Ron Zook is 19-31 ATS as a favorite. No surprise to see plenty of betting market love on spread covering machine Northern Illinois. The Huskies (9-2-1 ATS) won their eight MAC conference games by an average of 31.9 ppg and face Miami-Ohio in the MAC Championships at Ford Field in Detroit. Considering Nevada is off the biggest win in school history, it wasn't a shock to see Louisiana Tech take the early money. Even with postseason hopes still alive, bettors weren't too keen on Washington (5-6) laying nine points at Washington State. The Cougars are clearly better but it has been a crap shoot what type of performance you'll get week to week. They lost at Stanford by 10, were then blown out at Arizona State by 42 and two weeks ago won by 17 at Oregon State.

December regular season college football games are always an interesting handicap because of the implications or lack thereof. In a lot of cases, bowl eligibility is established and "playing for pride" often becomes the overriding theme. Let's take a look at this week's regular season finales and break down what is at stake.

Arizona State at Arizona (-6)
- Last week's win over UCLA put Arizona State (5-6) one win shy of a potential bowl berth. It was announced that head coach Dennis Erickson will indeed return next season. Arizona won on a last second field goal last year.
Friday
Illinois (-5.5) at Fresno State
- Both teams are bowl eligible but if last year was any indication, we can expect another wild one. The Bulldogs won 53-52 last season in Champaign – an FSU o-lineman caught a deflected two-point conversion with two seconds left.

Kansas State is the culprit as they travel to North Texas for a meaningless non-conference showdown. North Texas has been through more crap than any team in the country with a mid-season coaching change and more injuries than you could imagine.
