IRS seeks tax form on winnings of $600

07.02.2015     08:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Filling out a tax form when you hit a royal flush on a video poker machine is mildly annoying. It's about to get worse. The IRS is proposing that the winnings limit be dropped from its current mark of $1200 to a mere $600.

"I think it would have a big effect on the overall experience for slot players, as it's very common to have jackpots over $600, and now they'll actually have to stop play and wait for the attendant to come over," said Chad Beynon, who covers gaming stocks for Macquarie.

"That does a few things. First of all, it's just a pause in the game that causes people to lose their momentum and maybe decide to go home," he added. "Second, people want to walk away after what they consider to be a big jackpot, and whereas before they would have played a couple more hours and not left until they hit a bigger jackpot, this is kind of the government telling you that you just won a lot of money."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Mini-Camp Betting News

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All 32 NFL teams have concluded their OTA’s (organized team activities) and mini-camps over the past few weeks.  There’s nothing else on the horizon for the NFL before the start of training camps in mid-July.  Therefore, it’s time for bettors and fans alike to fixate on the news trickling out of those mini-camps over the last few weeks.  Here are half a dozen such reports, with teams listed in alphabetical order and information coming from local sources.

Arizona Cardinals - Arizona was an elite team with Carson Palmer behind center last year.  When Palmer got hurt, they were still a pretty good team until Drew Stanton got hurt as well.  Once Arizona was down to a third stringer at quarterback, the back end of the season was ugly as they closed out with a 2-5 stretch, culminating in a blowout to Carolina in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Both Palmer and Stanton fully participated in mini-camp, with Palmer entering the new season as the clear starter, even at 35 years old and coming off his second ACL surgery.  Palmer wowed observers at mini-camp, looking extremely sharp in 11-on-11 Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Francisco Giants at Seattle Mariners

San Francisco (Vogelsong) at Seattle (Montgomery) -140 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Seattle

The Giants lineup is ice cold once again.  They were shut out last night, the fifth time in their last six games that San Francisco has been held to two runs or less.  We saw similar offensive struggles for the Giants when lineup sparkplug Hunter Pence was on the DL in April.  His second trip to the DL has been equally disastrous for this slumping lineup.  And with Aoki slumping at the top of the batting order as well, we can expect continued struggles for the Giants offensively.

That’s bad news against an unfamiliar lefty, as Mike Montgomery takes the hill for Seattle today.  Each of Montgomery’s first three big league starts has been strong, allowing only four runs in 19 innings of work.  The former first round pick was dealt to Seattle this past offseason; a guy who ranked among the Top 20 prospects in baseball earlier in his minor league career.  Behind him, Seattle’s bullpen is rested and ready following another gem from King Felix last night.

And it’s not hard to make a case for Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Curious Case of the Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s not hard to predict which NFL teams are going to be the betting favorites coming into the campaign.  Look no further than the NFL Season Win Totals markets.  Just about all of the top teams – teams lined at nine wins or higher – have one commonality.  In a quarterback’s league, they all have top tier quarterbacks.

Baltimore has Joe Flacco.  Dallas has Tony Romo.  Denver has Peyton Manning.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.  Indianapolis has Andrew Luck.  New England has Tom Brady.  New Orleans has Drew Brees.  Seattle has Russell Wilson.  That’s eight of the ten teams that are lined at 9 wins or higher this year; all squad with elite level quarterbacks.  Miami, with the promising Ryan Tannehill firmly entrenched as the starting QB, is lined at nine wins in many locations as well (8.5 with juice to the over in others).

And then there’s Philadelphia, lined at 9.5 wins in most locations.  The Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez battling for the starting job.  With Bradford – their big offseason pickup and the former #1 overall draft choice from 2010 Read more

Cincinnati (Lorenzen) at Chicago (Wada) -145 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

I don’t trust Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada; still winless through his first four starts.  Wada hasn’t finished the sixth inning in any of those outings, and he’s coming off a particularly poor showing in Washington, allowing eleven baserunners while recording only eleven outs against the Nationals.  The Reds lineup is in their best current form of the season, scoring four runs or more in twelve of their last thirteen ballgames, including 22 runs over their last three ballgames. Even with Zack Cosart on the DL and Billy Hamilton a question mark for tonight – hence the move towards the Under in early betting action this morning – the Reds are still primed to put some crooked numbers on the scoreboard at Wrigley this evening.  And let’s not forget that the Cubs spotty bullpen behind Wada; certainly not a unit of strength against the Reds hot hitting bats. Cincinnati’s bullpen in front of closer Aroldis Chapman has actually pitched fairly well over the last week.  But this hasn’t been a reliable pen for any extended Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors show early opinions on Jets and 49ers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL futures market is heating up as the calendar turns to June.  Two teams in particular have seen significant action.  Money has poured in against the San Francisco 49ers, the #1 bet against team of the offseason, without a shred of debate.  And money has been flowing in support of the New York Jets. I did debate using the Minnesota Vikings as my top wiseguy bet-on team in early trading, but the markets have moved towards the Jets with a vehemence that Minnesota just can’t match.   In this week's Wiseguy Report, I’ll dive into the 49ers and Jets to see why the sharps have such strong opinions about their upcoming campaigns.

There’s no mystery surrounding all the anti-49ers money that’s been pouring in since the very first win totals were posted at CG Gaming back in February.  The markets hated the loss of hard driving, overachieving head coach Jim Harbaugh and they certainly don’t care for his replacement Jim Tomsula; a largely anonymous Niners assistant with no previous NFL head coaching experience (he did coach the Rhein Fire on NFL Europe for one season back in 2006).

MLB Handicapper Free Play: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

St. Louis (Martinez) +105 at Los Angeles (Anderson) O/U 7
Recommendation: St. Louis

The Dodgers are an injury riddled mess right now.  Key bats like Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford and Scott Van Slyke  are on the DL, while hot hitting second baseman Howie Kendrick is a question mark at best tonight, suffering from a knee injury that could put him on the DL as well.  The pitching staff is banged up too with key bullpen arms Paco Rodriguez and Pedro Baez both languishing on the DL.

LA will be playing their ninth game in the last eight days while flying back and forth across the country.  They’ve gone 9-13 in their last 22 games following a 22-10 start to the campaign.  It’s been even worse against opponents with winning records during that span, with LA sporting a 3-10 mark in their last 13 against above .500 foes.

St. Louis has suffered a handful of key injuries as well; most notably staff ace Adam Wainwright and key left handed bat Matt Adams.  But the Cards just keep winning; 8-2 in their last ten after last night’s blowout victory on this field.   Tonight’s starter, Read more

Los Angeles (Anderson) at St. Louis (Martinez) -110 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

St. Louis’ Carlos Martinez has been sharp of late with only two runs allowed over his last three starts. He lost his way at the start of May with back-to-back rough outings (9 IP, 14 ER) but outside of those two starts, Martinez hasn't allowed more than two runs. There's a lot to like about his profile: big arm, swing-and-miss stuff (9.45 K per 9), and solid ground ball rate (53.8%). As fearsome as LA's offense was to open the season, they've come crashing down to earth with 2 or fewer runs in nine of their last 13 games. Speaking of groundball rate, Dodgers' starter Brett Anderson currently leads all of qualified starters with an incredible 68.4%. Reports said that Anderson had some back issues in his last start but showed no ill-effects (7 IP, 2 ERs vs. Atlanta) and has no problems during his mid-week bullpen session. He shouldn't have much trouble against a fairly weak St. Louis lineup that already lost Matt Adams to the 60-day DL and may be without Matt Holliday (sick) after he left yesterday's game. And coming from the left side, Anderson can better Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Burnett) -120 at San Diego (Kennedy) O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have cashed a handful of Padres Over bets this year, and tonight’s game at Petco provides another rock solid opportunity to ride this emerging trend.  The results don’t lie.  Petco Field has been the strongest pitcher’s park in baseball since it opened. Baseline totals in San Diego have been hovering in the 6.5 range for years, just like it is in this game.  In 23 previous home games this year, only two have been totaled as high as 7.5.  San Diego has closed out their last two homestands on a 9-4 run to the Over.  Slumping bats Matt Kemp and Will Middlebrooks have both broken out over the last two nights, back-2-back wins in LA against the Angels.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are hitting as well as they have all season, scoring four or more in every game of their current six game winning streak while averaging just shy of six runs per game during that span.  Big bat Andrew McCutchen has broken out of his slump over the past week, with a dozen hits in his last seven games.  Pittsburgh starter AJ Burnett Read more

MLB Handicapping: Red Sox pitchers improve under Willis' watch

05.25.2015     08:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Don't get carried away but since Boston brought in new pitching coach Carl Willis, the staff as a whole has enjoyed a decent amount of improvement. There's was really no where to go but up but in 15 games under Willis’ watch, the staff ERA is 3.57. Prior to that it was around 5.00. One of the biggest upswings has been Wade Miley who over his last three outings has allowed only three runs. Similar situation with today's starter, Joe Kelly, who coughed up five rf more runs in four straight games but has since buckled down with back-to-back quality starts.

"He's trying to get his arms around the bigger picture with each individual guy," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "He's about making gradual changes and sudden changes, not to come in like he's the white knight and he's just going to make immediate changes with everyone. I think you risk losing credibility with an individual if you do that. He's establishing relationships."

"It then becomes a question of what's going on here [with
