College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners

10.10.2014     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas vs. Oklahoma
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC (Dallas)
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -14.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: OKlahoma -14 O/U 47
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma -18
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Under

The second Saturday in October means a number of things at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Big Tex will be slow talking fair-goers; fair-goers will be consuming tons of Fletcher's Corn Dogs and any other fried food imaginable; and the college football hatefest known as Texas-Oklahoma will take center stage in the middle of it all at the Cotton Bowl.

While this game often pits a pair of highly-ranked teams, 11th-ranked Oklahoma (4-1) saw its national playoff aspirations take a serious hit last Saturday in Fort Worth as TCU stunned the Sooners, 37-33. Texas (2-3), meanwhile, is unranked and experiencing significant growing pains on and off the field under first-year head coach Charlie Strong. The Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

Montreal at Toronto -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs last season after suffering through many injuries in net and up front.  There were some big changes to the lineup over the summer and an emphasis has been placed on puck possession going forward.  Teams in the NHL have been preaching puck possession since 2005, but the Leafs are trying to take their hockey analytics to another level.  Whether or not that level with translate into more wins remains to be seen.  The preseason has been good to the Leafs as they finished atop the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.  Preseason hockey holds a lot more weight than other preseason sports and I actually see wins and losses in the preseason translate into how well a team will start off the season.  Montreal will be in the hunt for the playoffs this year.  Despite some of their offseason shakeups, they still remain one of the top 8 teams in the Eastern Conference.  Toronto will be playing in front of the home crowd tonight and they've beaten the Canadiens in four straight season opening games.  Look for that Read more

College Footbal Gambling: Oklahoma State offense lacking potency

10.08.2014     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The stats don't look all that different but in watching Oklahoma State it is clear this isn't a high powered, dynamic offense. Quarterback Daxx Garman has played well but is still rather "green." And he's not getting much help from the run game with the Cowboys averaging  3.5 ypc vs. FBS opponents. Iowa State came into last week allowing over 5 ypc but held OSU to 3 ypc on 42 attempts. Head coach Mike Gundy says that the team's "vanilla" approach on offense will likely remain until sizable gains are made. Note that the total for Saturday's game at Kansas was bet down from 53.5 to 50.5.

"There's three things now," Gundy said. "One is Daxx. Two is the offensive line. And three, we can't run the ball very well. So we're basic vanilla for the most part.

"Until we improve in some areas, it's difficult to really get out of our box. We have to do the best we can with the inexperience we have at those positions."

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona Wildcats

USC at Arizona
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
USC -2.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: USC -2.5 O/U 68
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -3
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Under

The biggest thing I took away from the USC's game against Arizona State was that despite all the preseason talk about playing up-tempo the Trojans are actually looking to slow things down, especially in the second half of games when their defense is gassed due to a lack of depth. They've been suiting up a limited amount of players and the lack of depth was certainly exposed against the Sun Devils.

Defensively, with the exception of the somewhat flukey Boston College game (425 rushing yards allowed) and the two big plays from ASU late in the fourth quarter, USC's defense has been pretty good. They've gotten progressively better against the run holding Oregon State and Arizona State to 89 yards the last two weeks. That bodes Read more

NHL Handicapping: San Jose Sharks headed in wrong direction

Sell the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have been a powerhouse in the Western Conference (at least during the regular season) for the better part of the last decade but much like we’ve seen with the New England Patriots, we’re starting to witness chinks in the armor. San Jose has a lot of “bet against” qualities heading into the campaign: aging core, questionable depth, average goaltending, and questionable team chemistry. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were stripped of their respective captaincy titles in the offseason and even though they can still play at a fairly strong level, this decision, even though they won’t admit it, has to sting them a bit. Those two veterans along with Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Tomas Hertl provide plenty of punch in their top six forwards but there is a significant dropoff in my mind from their top six to bottom six forwards.

Depth is not only an issue for the Sharks up front but on defense as well. They have only Scott Hannan, Matt Irwin, and Swiss rookie Mirco Mueller on defence, and only slightly more options up front. Tommy Wingels took a big step forward, speedy Matt Read more

College Football Betting: Wisconsin goes with two quarterbacks vs. Illinois

10.07.2014     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite Melvin Gordon putting up nearly a season's worth of yardage in five games (871 yards, 8.3 ypc) Wisconsin finds itself 3-2 after last week's loss to Northwestern. The lack of production from the quarterback position has been beyond bad as head coach Gary Andersen announced both Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave would play vs. Illinois. Keep in mind in 2013 Stave threw for 2,500 yards and had a respectable 22-13 TD-INT ratio. This season, in four games against FBS competition, UW's quarterbacks (mostly McEvoy) have completed 45% of their passes with three TDs and seven INTs.

“They could possibly be on the field at the same time. I’m hoping that happens because I think that it opens up a little can of worms for people to wonder what’s going to happen, so we’ll see if that can take place for a couple plays and then we’ll also play them in different situations,” Andersen said. “We’re best served to able to play both those quarterbacks.”

NHL Handicapping: Buffalo Sabres offer value coming off of dismal season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s October and a new NHL season is upon us!  With no work stoppages or Olympic breaks teams should be very focused throughout the course of the season. For today and tomorrow we'll focus our attention on a few teams in the Eastern Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. And in case you missed it here are links to free season o/u points recommendations on the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers from last week. Enjoy!

Buy the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are my biggest value play in the Eastern Conference heading into the season.  There is absolutely no chance they will be worse than last season’s 52-point total and -91 goal differential (both last in the NHL).  It’s easy to say the Sabres will be better based on a new year alone, but they worked hard to overhaul their lineup over the summer.  The books aren’t seeing much room for improvement as they have Buffalo lined at 64.5 points which is lowest in Read more

NHL Handicapping: Dallas Stars are a bet on squad heading into season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL will drop the puck on the 2014-15 season later this week which gives me time to break down a few teams in the Western Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. The conference was a beast last season and I expect it to remain highly competitive with several legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Buy the Dallas Stars
Head coach Lindy Ruff did a tremendous job in his first season behind the bench in Big D as the Stars played their best hockey down the stretch and in the playoffs where they gave top seed Anaheim all kinds of fits before falling 4-2. Expect them to continue to build on that success this season. The scoring was led by the incomparable duo of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, who each scored at least 34 goals and 79 points last season. Dallas’ biggest shortcoming was it lacked supplemental scoring but GM Jim Nill has done a lot to change that by trading for Jason Spezza and signing Ales Hemsky. Spezza is an injury waiting to happen but if he can stay healthy (a big if), he will add much needed secondary scoring to lend support to Seguin, Benn and Valeri Nichushkin who impressed in his rookie Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling

10.06.2014     12:25 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among the staunchest opponents to legalized gambling in the United States.  Heck, the league famously refused an advertisement from the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau for the Super Bowl, in an effort to appear like they are really anti-gaming.

Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act attached to the Port Security Bill in October 2006.  The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that it’s enormously popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable.  The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers.  From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deals that pumps nearly six billions dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the Read more
