College Football Gambling: Rutgers suspends head coach Flood

09.17.2015     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers announced that head coach Kyle Flood will be suspended for three games following impermissible contact with a university professor. Adding to the Scarlet Knights' misery is the amount of players currently suspended including top pass catcher Leonte Carroo and half of the secondary. Flood however will still be allowed to participate in practice and team meetings. Pick your poison this weekend, bettors: Rutgers' drama or Penn State as a double-digit favorite.

College Football Handicapping: Penn State's Franklin steps up role with offense

09.17.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into last week's game vs. Buffalo, Penn State head coach James Franklin had said that he was going to be more involved with the offense's play calling. The end result was so-so at best. Let's first take into account that Buffalo grades out as an average MAC defense. The Nittany Lions produced only 328 total yards and Christian Hackenberg was a pedestrian 14-of-27 for 128 yards. The positive was that the offensive line didn't allow a sack after giving up 10 in the opener against Temple. In our opinion, PSU's struggles aren't related to poor play calling or lack of variety but rather heavy limitations as they attempt to move the football behind a weak o-line. Saturday's game will be a good indication if there is the potential for improvement as Rutgers' short-handed secondary allowed 478 passing yards to Washington State in Week 2.

"John's in the booth, he calls the plays," Franklin said following Wednesday's practice. "They'll be recommendations, but for the most part, he calls the

College Football Betting Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini at North Carolina Tar Heels

Illinois at North Carolina
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
North Carolina -6.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: North Carolina -9.5 O/U 64.5
Recommendation: Over

It's hard to even been remotely impressed with Illinois' defensive numbers thus far as it held woeful Kent State and FCS Western Illinois to a combined three points. Go back to last season and eliminate games against FCS Youngstown State and offensively inept Penn State and we see that the Illini allowed over 37 ppg. Even when accounting for better health, a fresh start, and natural improvement, the Illini still grade out as one of the weaker power conference stop units. The step up in class this weekend is so dramatic that I have a difficult time envisioning much in the way of resistance.

North Carolina's offense that is poised for big things with virtually their entire unit back from a year ago. In Week 1, the Tar Heels managed only 13 points against South Carolina but turnovers and failures inside the red zone hampered their output. They had no difficulty moving the football with an average of nearly 7 yards per play. Read more

College Football Handicapping: Air Force goes with backup QB, Michigan State has inside knowledge of option

09.16.2015     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A couple of interesting angles to consider for Saturday's Air Force-Michigan State game. To start, the Falcons lost starting quarterback Nate Romine to a knee injury and will go with backup Karson Roberts. Roberts gets good marks as a runner but even though Air Force is obviously run-based, he's shown absolutely no ability to throw the football which is concerning with the Falcons likely to be trailing by margin at some point. Also is play is MSU defensive line coach Ron Burton who is well-versed in AFA's system having coached there for over a decade. According to reports, Sparty has been prepping for the option dating back to the summer. A few sportsbooks have chucked up the side with Michigan State -26.5. Still no total available.

“You’re always concerned (about cut-blocks), but that’s football. That’s why we’ve worked on these things every other day in summer practice,” said

Gambling Update: The only guys winning at DFS are pros

09.15.2015     09:34 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

This is hilarious and yet hardly a surprise. Like poker and sports betting, the only people making money off of Daily Fantasy Sports are, you guessed, "sharps." Just like a weekend warrior who likes to bet $50 on a few college football games, eventually, they'll lose --- thus making FanDuel and DraftKings very rich. And this isn't some scam --- DFS sites openly admit that in order to actually win over the long term, you need skill.  So while you watch countless commercials showing regular bros taking home big checks, know that it's really the "quant" guys who have a model and sit in front of their computers for hours on end that actually earn.

“We don’t make any apologies that it’s a game of skill, and you might go up against the best in the industry,” says Nigel Eccles, the chief executive of FanDuel. “Some of the

College Football Betting Preview: Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide

Ole Miss at Alabama
Saturday, 6:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -8 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -5.5 O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Under

The Ole Miss Rebels talked all offseason about becoming a high-power, up-tempo offense and through two games, they've been true to their word with back-to-back 70+ point efforts. The competition obviously comes into question with FCS bottom feeder UT-Martin and rebuilding Fresno State as the two victims. Saying this weekend's trip to Tuscaloosa will be a step up in class is an understatement. Alabama did a number on both Wisconsin (268 yards) and Middle Tennessee (275 yards) in its two victories.

Ole Miss pulled off the upset in last year's meeting, 23-17, in Oxford. Alabama had a slight edge in the box score but two Crimson Tide turnovers proved costly. Not sure we can put a lot of stock in that game as both quarterbacks and a number of key skill position player have since left.

My biggest question about Ole Miss is its offensive line. They return virtually everyone from last season and obviously looked good in Weeks 1 and 2. However, I go back Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How the NFL betting markets have changed

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When I first moved to Las Vegas just prior to the 1998 football season, I was not an experienced, seasoned bettor.  There was a TON to learn, and for my first few years in town, I made sure to consume every bit of handicapping material I could find, primarily through books, newsletters and radio.  And just about all of that source material referenced some key NFL concepts for winning.

“Don’t play road favorites; they’re a low expectation wager.”  “Week 1 in the NFL is the lowest scoring week until the cold weather hits – look for Unders, especially with the highest totals.”  “Beware the public teams; you’re laying a premium price to support them.”  “There’s more value in underdogs than in favorites.”  “The key numbers of ‘3’ and ‘7’ are crucial to have working in your favor.”  I could go on and on, but you get the point.  I’m quite confident that 18 years later, many relative newbies continue to rely on very similar concepts.  The conventional wisdom in the sportsbetting world, even for a sport as popular to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Akron Zips

Pittsburgh at Akron
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -13.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -11.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: Under

Last year, when the Zips and Panthers squared off, we saw a defensive struggle from start to finish; a 21-10 Zips upset.  Neither team moved the ball consistently, and both squads relied on a dink-and-dunk offense that resulted in a complete dearth of big plays.

It’s one year later.  Akron’s defense is head and shoulders ahead of where it was last year based on talent alone.  Pitt is in their second game under defensive minded head coach Pat Narduzzi, the former Michigan State defensive coordinator, and he’s got the team’s attention coming off a dismal defensive showing Week 1.  Neither team has an elite QB, and Pitt just lost their best offensive weapon, Heisman candidate RB James Conner, to a season ending injury.  Yet this total is still sitting above 50 in most locations, thanks to an influx of Over money on Thursday morning.  That’ll get me into action with a wager on the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Tennessee Volunteers

Oklahoma at Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -1 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oklahoma

Impressive pointspread covering wins posted by each of these teams last week leads into critical early season affair. Bandwagons have been hitched to both Oklahoma and Tennessee since spring practice with the Vols a sexy pick to contend in the SEC East.

Despite the fact that these teams combined to win their respective Week 1games by a combined 100-34 score it stands to reason there were portions of both playbooks that were saved for this matchup. Conference affiliation means next to nothing here since personnel gap in size and speed is slim to none. Matchups inside the schemes, execution of plays, special teams, and number of breaks are going to be the difference makers here so let’s take a look at the on field fundamentals.

Bob Stoops brought in “Air Raid” guru Lincoln Riley to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator with games like this in mind. The 32-year-old Riley learned under Mike Leach while at Texas Read more
