College Basketball Betting: West Virginia considers lineup changes

01.09.2013     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia at Texas -4.5 O/U 125.5

No shortage of topics when it comes to West Virginia basketball these days. Beat writers have already worn out the lack of toughness/no leadership angles. Now they’re going the potential lineup change route. The Mountaineers' big men have vastly underachieved and as a result, the team has been killed on the boards. Head coach Bob Huggins, who may or may not punch someone or something before the year is out, is considering going the small-ball route. The only problem is the team is shooting 28.7% from three. The Mountaineers have shot better than 50% eFG twice this season (vs. Marist and Oakland). Tonight they face one of the best defenses in the country in Texas (0.84 points per posession allowed).

Alabama at Missouri -9 O/U 133
Recommendation: Missouri

If you look at Alabama's in SEC play last year, they didn't lose a game by more than 10 points despite going 9-7. But the Crimson Tide were a different team in part because they had JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell on the front line. Even on off shooting nights, Bama's defense always kept them in the games. Green and Mitchell are obviously gone and while Alabama still defends, they simply aren't as strong. Tonight they go on the road to face Missouri with six freshmen and sophomores. We saw this team absolutely wilt under the pressure of VCU's press (16 turnovers, 39% FGs). They return guard Andrew Steele who will certainly help but reports indicate that he is not 100%. Missouri isn't as frenetic as VCU but they'll undoubtedly extend their pressure and they also have the size up front to force Alabama to shoot from the outside. It is a long season, but Alabama's home losses to Mercer and Tulane are big red Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Oddsmakers, bettors overvalue Pittsburgh Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows Ken Pomeroy has a huge impact of the betting markets. Rarely do we see pointspreads or totals stray too far from Pomery's "predictions" unless there is a significant injury. But one ranking in particular has caught my eye. Last season, Pittsburgh finished 63rd (22-17, 5-13 Big East) in Pomeroy's rankings. Given Pitt's history of success and returning talent, the Panthers opened the year ranked 22nd – a mark that seemed fairly reasonable. But for whatever reason, Pitt skyrocketed up the rankings despite playing a soft, home friendly schedule. Heading into December 19th's game against Delaware State, the Panthers were 5th, despite playing one legitimate opponent; Michigan, on a neutral court and the Wolverines won 67-62. There were a handful of decent foes like Lehigh, Delaware and Detroit, but those games were at home and Pitt as expected won rather easily.

So then Big East play started and despite its very limited resume, Pitt closed as a 6-point home favorite over Cincinnati – a game the Bearcats won outright 70-61. Then last weekend, the Panthers took to the road to face Rutgers and were getting bet like people already knew the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing the AFC's Final Four

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With three more NFL playoff weekends still ahead of us, there are eight teams still standing; the top quartile of the league. This week, I’m going to write about all eight of those teams; assessing their respective chances for a trip to the Super Bowl. But first, it’s time for a brief history lesson for the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

If you’re looking for active trends for next weekend’s round of the playoffs, you’re not going to find much when it comes to sides. Over the past ten years, the rested team has only gone 17-23 ATS in this round, but we’ve seen some dramatic swings. From 2006-2008, the teams coming off a bye went only 2-10 ATS in this round. In 2009, the teams coming off their bye went 3-1 ATS. In each of the last two years, it’s been a 2-2 ATS split. In other words, there’s not much of a trend.

It’s a similar story with totals. Over the last ten years, there’s no prevailing trend to report, with 21 Unders compared to 19 Overs. But over the last two years, it’s 7-1 to the Over. In the two years before that, it was 6-2 to the Under. In the two years prior to that, Overs and Unders Read more

Big weekend for Las Vegas bettors and sportsbooks

01.04.2013     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas sportsbooks gear up for a big weekend starting with Saturday's two NFL Wild Card matchups and ending Monday with the BCS National Championship.

“The national championship game will be equivalent to the pro games for us,” Wynn Las Vegas Race and Sports Director John Avello said. “Normally, the pro games are bigger, but this year they’re all going to be big writes.”

“I’d suggest that game will be the biggest turning point of the weekend,” Vaccaro said. “I’m almost sure we’ll need Minnesota, but not because of straight bets. The Packers will be tied into every parlay and teaser.”

“People who are betting Alabama are going to lay the 9.5 points,” Vaccaro said. “But there are a lot of people who would just rather root for Notre Dame to win. We’ve gotten a little attacked on the Notre Dame moneyline. That’s what we’re seeing so far, and I think that could be what we keep seeing.”

Arkansas State vs. Kent State
CRIS Opener:
Arkansas State -3 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Arkansas State -4 O/U 61
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arkansas State -0.5

The last of the mid major bowls kicks off on Sunday, the final game of what should be an exciting day’s worth of football. While it’s definitely not as exciting as the NFL Playoffs, as a standalone primetime game it should garner some attention. The GoDaddy.com Bowl takes place in Mobile which is notorious for its rain —in fact it’s the wettest city in the United States—but the preliminary forecast calls for a dry evening so totals bettors shouldn’t have to worry about poor conditions.

Both Arkansas State and Kent State like to run the football. The Golden Flashes rank 15th in the country in rushing yards per Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Northern Colorado Bears at Weber State Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Northern Colorado at Weber State -13
Recommendation: Weber State

Northern Colorado has played a brutal schedule; one a lot of Big Sky teams would struggle with. But unfortunately for the Bears, traveling to Weber State tonight isn't much of a step down in class. I've been chomping at the bit to step in and support UNC but they've been on the road for nearly the entire non-conference and aren't good enough to compete with strong teams on the highway. The storyline for Northern Colorado is really a simple one. Yes, they were extremely young last year but they led the  country in three-point shooting at a staggering 45.1% and seventh in effective FG% at 55.1% and despite all that, they won nine games and were 5-11 in Big Sky play. This year, they are shooting only 30.5% from three and as a result have beaten only one DI team. Now they aren't going to shoot 30% all season but they just so happen to be facing one of the best three-point shooting Read more

College Football Handicapping: Ole Miss offense struggles in practice

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh vs. Mississippi -3 O/U 52

A couple of notes on Ole Miss as it prepares for Saturday's Compass Bowl against Pittsburgh. It sounds as if the cold weather hindered the offense in practice, in particular the quarterbacks. The mid-week forecast calls for game time temps in the high 40s to low 50s. It was also pointed out that Bo Wallacce’s shoulder and arm strength still was not 100 percent despite some extended rest.

“Bo (Wallace) was not himself today, Barry (Brunetti) and all the quarterbacks,” coach Hugh Freeze said. “The ball is a little harder, slicker and for receivers and specialists it certainly was a different game.”

“I think it’s about the same,” Freeze said. “I think you’ll see the same guy hopefully you saw against State. Read more

Cotton Bowl Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -3.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -3.5 O/U 72
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas A&M -3.5

The Cotton Bowl will feature Oklahoma versus Texas A&M and at the start of the season the odds of one selecting these two teams for this game had to be 1000-1. Sure, Oklahoma was touted by many as a potential BCS Championship team, but to envision A&M in this bowl contest? Not a chance. Especially since they made the huge step up in class from the Big XII to the SEC.

Texas A&M is coming off a 7-6 2011 season where they lost nine starters including their stud quarterback Ryan Tannehill who was the 8th pick in the NFL draft. Also during last season Texas A&M amassed an impressive 11-game double-digit lead at the half, but only held on to win Read more
