Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference second half preview

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote about what I’m expecting from the Western Conference in the eight week stretch between the end of the All-Star Break and the beginning of the playoffs.  This week, I’m going to focus on the East, before my attention turns to March Madness for the next few Wiseguy Reports.

There’s no question that the Eastern Conference is finally getting better after nearly two decades of playing second fiddle to the West.  Since Michael Jordan (and everybody else) left the Bulls following their sixth title in 1998, the Eastern Conference has only won five championships, something the Lakers and Spurs have each done five times by themselves during that span!  Detroit won in 2004, Miami won in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and Boston won in 2008.

And from all indications in the betting markets, the East isn’t very likely to win a title this year either.  Cleveland is the only team in the East priced at less than 15-1 to reach the Read more

Recent court case leaves sport betting in New Jersey a big underdog

02.19.2016     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's exhausting to watch New Jersey continue to fight the good fight with regards to the legalization of sports betting. Court case after court case, it continues to be very apparent that this ain't happening any time soon. And yet the pro-legalization camp remains as confident/delusional as ever. You could have an across-the-board “no freakin’ way” from the U.S. Supreme Court and New Jersey would still say it's all a matter of time.

"It's a squeaker," New Jersey Sen. Raymond Lesniak said after the hearing. "I think we're headed to federal regulation, which is fine."

"As we have reiterated time and time again -- the existing federal law is unconstitutional and arbitrary; it picks winners and losers, while continuing to deny New Jerseyans the right to participate in this billion-dollar industry," Pallone and LoBiondo said in a joint statement released after Wednesday's hearing. "We are hopeful that today's hearing signals the start of a new era in our state, and we

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois
Recommendation: First half Under 68

Rutgers, who has struggled to score for much of the season, will be without the Big Ten's top "usage" player in Corey Sanders (suspended). Sanders leads the Scarlet Knights in virtually every offensive statistical category and netted 39 points in the team's triple OT loss to Illinois two weeks ago. It's not just Sanders' point production that will be missed but also a player who dominates the ball throughout the game. I think a lot of Sanders' production is of the de facto variety but his absence will likely be felt. As for Illinois, injuries have become such a problem that the team is now experimenting with Malcolm Hill at point guard. Hill is Illinois' top offensive weapon and rather than playing him off the ball and working to get him shots, he's being asked to run the offense and score. The move didn't exactly pan out on Saturday as Hill failed to reach double-digits for the first time this season and the Illini were held to a season-low 56 at Northwestern. So why did this total get steamed from 141.5 to 145? Well, you have two of the league's worst defenses involved for starters. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Opponents not digging Maryland's balls

02.12.2016     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More rumblings about opposing teams not liking the Under Armour balls Maryland plays with at home. Iowa complained about it following its 74-68 loss two weeks ago. In that game, the Hawkeyes shot 5-of-24 from three. Purdue practiced all week with them but ended up hitting only 3-of-25 from deep in a 72-61 loss. Saturday's opponent, Wisconsin, isn't a big fan either and vividly remembers last year's 38% FG, 53-point stinker in College Park. Now it's not as if Maryland doesn't have other factors in its favor like a strong home court and an above average defense. However, if you spend 95% of your time with a leather ball and then switch over to a different material, it do doubt feels weird and can easily throw off your shot. But while it probably is somewhat of an advantage for the Terps, who are undefeated at home, it hasn't resulted in any Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors gear up for Super Bowl 50 Prop Bets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When I talk with casual fans in the week leading up to the Super Bowl, they tend to be interested in my opinion about who is going to win the big game. But when I’m talking with bettors, not fans, the topic inevitably turns towards props; where sports betting and fantasy sports collide.

Props have been on the Las Vegas betting boards for thirty years. It all began when the juggernaut 1985 Chicago Bears were facing the Patriots in Super Bowl 20. Legendary Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro was a very creative bookmaker at the Mirage (at the time), looking for ways to increase their betting handle. Vaccaro posted odds on whether 350 pound defensive lineman William ‘Refrigerator’ Perry would score a touchdown in the big game. Vaccaro certainly didn’t think it was likely, offering attractive underdog odds for those who wanted to bet on The Fridge would hit paydirt in the end zone.

Vaccaro’s unique offering attracted all kinds of attention both from bettors and from media types. It also accomplished his goal of increasing betting handle, with money pouring in on the ‘Yes, Fridge will score a TD’ side of the prop at big (but Read more

A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Texas A&M Aggies at Arkansas Razorbacks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M -3 at Arkansas O/U 150.5
Recommendation: Texas A&M

Riding one of the country’s longest winning streaks, the 5th ranked Texas A&M Aggies looks for their 11th consecutive victory tonight against Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena. This is a matchup of two teams headed in opposite directions. Mike Anderson’s Razorbacks have lost three straight SEC games and continue to go through the growing pains of a completely rebuilt roster. “I just think our inexperience really comes to the forefront at the wrong time,” Anderson said.  The Hogs are going to be up against it tonight as A&M has emerged as the class of the SEC with the No. 2 offense and No. 1 defense in league play. The Aggies handed out a 23-point beat down on Arkansas earlier this month. Jalen Jones scored a game-high 28 points and was one of five Texas A&M players in double figures. The Aggies also made 11 3-pointers -- something Arkansas has struggled with this season -- and led by 21 at halftime. It’s also worth noting A&M turned it over only 10 times in a 75 possession game. The Aggies are tops in the league in lowest turnover rate Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers

Toronto at Florida O/U 5
Recommendation: Florida -1.5 +170

Easily the biggest surprise story of the first half has to be the emergence of the Florida Panthers. Leading the Atlantic Division with 61 points, they host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in their last game before the All-Star break. The Panthers are coming off of a pair of big home wins over the weekend. They took down defending Stanley Cup Champions, Chicago, 4-0 thanks to a 27-save shutout by Roberto Luongo and then used a four-goal second period to beat in-state rivals Tampa Bay 24 hours later. Both games drew near sell-out attendance numbers and with a 14-3-1 record in their last 18 games, the buzz in South Florida should continue to rise during the second half of the season. Toronto comes into this contest on a 1-5-2 skid and have dropped three of their last four road games. With less than a month before the trade deadline, Maple Leafs management has already started shopping names of players and  contracts they are willing to part ways with. It's tough to keep a steady focus when a team is losing, but even tougher when you know you're going to be moved to another team. The Leafs Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early primer on betting Super Bowl 50

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl 50 matchup is set.   In the end, second best didn’t cut it.  The team with the very best defense in the NFL this season – Denver – won a pair of tight home playoff games against banged up foes to return to the big game for the second time in three seasons.  The Broncos are set to face the team with the very best quarterback in the NFL this season – Carolina, with Cam Newton behind center; a Panthers team that finished with the best record in the league.

The best quarterback vs. the best defense!  We saw this two years ago, when Peyton Manning set records with his play, but Manning tailed off down the stretch and the Seattle Seahawks elite defense controlled the flow right from the get-go in the biggest Super Bowl Blowout of the 21st century.

The irony here, of course, is that two years ago, Denver was here due to Peyton Manning, and they lost the Super Bowl to the league’s best defensive team.  Only two years later, Denver is here because THEY have the best defense in the NFL, facing off against an emerging yet elite dual threat quarterback.  That defense didn’t perform Read more
