College Basketball Betting Free Play: Penn State Nittany Lions at Minnesota Golden Gophers

Penn State +7 at Minnesota O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Penn State

Is Minnesota downright desperate for a victory today against Penn State? You damn right it is. Does desperation translate into success? Negative. Minnesota is going in the wrong direction. Richard Pitino's team has lost seven of its last 10 games, making a victory at The Barn tonight vs. PSU an absolute must. Not only that, but then the Gophers are going to most likely need a pair of wins at next week's Big Ten Tournament in order to feel good about their chances of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Penn State is playing solid basketball right now, covering the number in each of its last three games. The Nittany Lions have won outright in three of their last five road assignments, including a 59-32 win at Northwestern on Thursday night. PSU probably has the most underrated backcourt in the country. Coming off a torn ACL last season, senior point guard Tim Frazier has enjoyed another stellar campaign to cap off what has been an outstanding collegiate career. Frazier has scored in double figures in nine consecutive games. The fifth-year senior is averaging 15.6 Read more

Northwestern at Purdue -9 O/U 123
Recommendation: Purdue

Purdue has played a brutal slate down the stretch facing what could very well be five NCAA Tournament bound squads – three of those five contests on the road. The Boilers haven't quit either, losing to Michigan in overtime, Iowa by single digits in Iowa City, and by six up in Madison on Wednesday. No question Matt Painter and the team are frustrated but today marks a great opportunity to feel good for a change. Not much of any motivation for the Northwestern side as it limps into this contest short on bodies and scoring ability. We saw the fatigue of the season and the loss of JerShon Cobb really play out in Thursday's embarrassing 59-32 loss to Penn State. Today is a situation that if the Wildcats get down there is simply no reason to put up much of a fight with the Big Ten Tournament just around the corner. Also note that in the first meeting between these teams, Purdue had the game won not once, but twice, but managed to lose in double OT. It's been that kind of season for the Boilermakers but I feel that they are sitting on a solid showing today. As with all Northwestern games, the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Arizona Wildcats at Oregon Ducks

Arizona at Oregon +3 O/U 139.5
Recommendation: Oregon

This season ending matchup looks like an interesting one, and has completely different levels of importance to its competitors. For Arizona the result here means very little. At 28-2 the Wildcats are a likely #1 seed in the NCAA tournament and long ago wrapped up the regular season PAC-12 title. There is very little for them to gain or lose today. For Oregon, however, this could be a huge win for the revitalized Ducks. After opening the conference slate with a win over Utah back in January, Oregon dropped 8 of its next 10 games and looked like they were going to miss the Big Dance. However, they have turned it around and won their past six games, putting them at 9-8 in conference play and 21-8 overall. They could very easily be 13-4 in conference play as four losses were by exactly two points, including a 67-65 loss at Arizona on February 6th. A win here would solidify their position in the NCAA tourney and move them in contention for a 6th seed or better depending on how they fare in the PAC-12 Tournament. Three points here could be huge given Oregon's history of close losses, but I wouldn't be Read more

College Basketball Betting: Sportsbooks score big on Georgia State "upset"

03.05.2014     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you follow the college basketball betting markets you may have noticed Arkansas State taking a lot of money last night. Georgia State had already clinched the Sun Belt's no. 1 seed and head coach Ron Hunter hinted that he may rest some of his starters the final two games of the regular season. Adding to the potential "no-show" for the Panthers was the difficulty they had getting to the ASU’s arena due to inclement weather. The game started nearly an hour late and before GSU could even blink, Arkansas State jumped out to a 7-0 lead and the Panthers were forced to call a timeout. But Hunter didn't rest all of his starters – he sat only leading scorer RJ Hunter. The rest of the regular rotation saw extended minutes. Arkansas State led by three at half and by as much as 8 in the second half but GSU wouldn't go away and eventually Read more

Tampa Bay at St. Louis -180 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Much has been made of the blockbuster trade that sent Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller to the Stanley Cup contending St. Louis Blues and rightfully so.  Miller is the type of goalie that can carry a team on his back deep into the playoffs.  Put him on a defensive minded team that is third in the league in GAA at 2.27 and the Blues are the favorites in the Western Conference at this point.  Miller took one game to settle into his role with the new club as the Blues came back to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 on Sunday night.  I fully expect Miller to get the start on Tuesday night and for him to get the bulk of the starts as the new #1 moving forward.  This is not just a play on the Blues feeling more comfortable with Miller in net or Miller winning this game on his own; Tampa Bay has been involved in many low scoring games away from home this season (5.06 goals per game). The Lightning will be playing their third road game in four nights and I look for them to try and keep it very simple against the more talented and deep Bluee. Teams seem to be settling down Read more

MLB Handicapping: Chicago White Sox projected to improve by 12 wins

03.03.2014     12:25 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Chicago White Sox are lined around 75 wins this season. That's a 12-win improvement over last year but the team is of course thinking bigger and better. Our advice? Start with that robust .302 team on-base percentage and go from there.

“I’m not too concerned with Vegas odds on that or where I would lay the action,” Hahn said. “Seventy-five wins would be a 12-win improvement, which would be a nice amount, but it’s certainly not what we’re shooting for as we sit here right now. Obviously we’re going to have to have health and guys reaching their potential break our way to get more than that, but that’s what we’re shooting for.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part 1 of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a ‘short list’ of potential champs in 2014, consisting of the following 18 teams: Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa State, Creighton, Villanova, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Kentucky.

However, since last week, two of those 18 teams have been bounced from consideration, including one of the co- favorites at any sportsbook in Vegas – John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.  Kentucky lost two straight last week; Iowa has lost three of their last four.  Both teams are now above the seven loss cut-off line and can be eliminated.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home.
The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a Read more

Kansas pk at Oklahoma State O/U 149.5
Recommendation: Kansas

Kansas clinched a share of the Big XII title in its last game at home against Oklahoma and go for the outright title this evening in Stillwater. The Jayhawks should be able to do so against an Oklahoma State team that has won two straight since the return of Marcus Smart, but is still not the team that everyone expected them to be at the beginning of the season. OSU snapped a seven-game losing skid in Smart's return against Texas Tech and followed that win up with a blowout win vs. TCU (combined 5-25 record in league play). The Cowboys are still a flawed team and had lost four straight games before Smart's suspension. They have very little depth and their defense has suffered without Michael Cobbins in the middle. Kansas will take advantage of the Cowboys in the paint and on the glass with Perry Ellis and Joel Embiid. Oklahoma State definitely has one of the strongest home courts in college basketball and should have an enthusiastic crowd but even a spirited effort won't be enough. Kansas has won in its last two visits to Stillwater and has beaten the Cowboys in six of the last seven Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: New Orleans Pelicans at Phoenix Suns

New Orleans at Phoenix -7 O/U 203
Recommendation: Phoenix

It doesn’t look as if Anthony Davis is going to be able to suit up for the Pelicans tonight after he hurt his shoulder in the first half of New Orleans ugly loss at Dallas on Wednesday.  Already without key starters Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, as well as Davis’ primary backup Jason Smith, the Pelicans are tanking these days.

New Orleans is winless since the All-Star break and losers of seven of their last eight, the lone win coming at hapless Milwaukee.  Without Davis on the floor, they got outscored by 13 after halftime against the Mavs.  The last time Davis missed a game, New Orleans scored only 77 points in a double digit loss at Minnesota.  And New Orleans will be walking into a real hornet’s nest in Phoenix tonight.

The Suns have avoided losing streaks like the plague for most of the season, but they’ve lost three straight and six of their last Read more
