Rapper claims he is betting all of our houses on the New England Patriots

01.26.2012     05:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Birdman, the rapper not the Denver Nuggets role player, says he plans on wagering $5 million on the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl XLVI. Mr. Bird was kicked out of the Celebrities Who Have Never Lost a Sports Bet club when he threw down $2 million on the Miami Heat to win last year's NBA title.

The message was both semi-incoherent, semi-profane and written with capitalization rules normally found in ransom notes, so we won't link to it here. Roughly translated, it says: "I like New England because BenJarvus Green-Ellis is my nephew. I plan on wagering $5 million on the game to anyone who wants the action."

Super Bowl XLVI Betting: New England has lucked out on opposing quarterbacks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011-12 NFL regular season was dubbed by many to be the Year of the Quarterback.  With scoring at a feverish peak thanks to the likes of Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and of course Tom Brady filling up the stat sheet every Sunday; it is easy to understand why.  While most are drawn to the incredible numbers Brady produced let’s not forget the other side of the football. Much has been made about the weakness of New England’s schedule and rightfully so.  In fact, on closer examination, since their loss to the New York Giants back in Week 9, you can make a strong argument that the Patriots defense hasn’t faced an above average quarterback.  The list includes; Mark Sanchez, Tyler Palko, Vince Young, Dan Orlovsky, Rex Grossman, Tim Tebow (twice), Matt Moore, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Joe Flacco.  How in the world did the Patriots finish in the bottom five in nearly every defensive category which such a favorable slate of opposing signal callers?  The Patriots defense managed to avoid Year of the Quarterback for much of the season but won’t have that luxury against Eli Manning and his red-hot wide Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Betting: New England Patriots hope to learn from SB XLII loss

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It occurred four years ago, but the New England Patriots are hoping to learn from their Super Bowl XLII loss to New York. The Boston Globe lists the 5 Things That Went Wrong during the game and what changes have taken place for the Pats since then.

1. The Patriots couldn't protect Tom Brady
2. Running game was a non-factor
3. There was too little diversification in the passing game
4. The defensive backs were ineffective
5. The pressure of chasing the perfect season was too great

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: Players like Sterling Moore help fuel Patriots

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There’s only one reason that the New England Patriots, not the Baltimore Ravens, are in the Super Bowl.  That reason?  Unheralded, undrafted rookie free agent Sterling Moore made the game saving play, knocking the ball out of Baltimore wide receiver Lee Evans’ hands in the end zone, negating what would have been the game winning Ravens touchdown in the closing seconds.

Moore’s story is a fascinating one.  He didn’t get any scholarship offers out of high school.  After enrolling at Laney Community College in Oakland, he tried out for the football team on a lark, as a favor for a friend.  After playing for two years at Laney, Moore moved on to SMU for his final two collegiate seasons.

Why SMU?  In Laney’s own words:  “They were the only D-I school that offered me. I felt like I could play at that level and said, ‘I might as well.’ “After a couple of undistinguished seasons with the Mustangs, he was not drafted.  But his home town team, Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Betting Tips: New England Patriots first half O/U review

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

For the upcoming Super Bowl between New York and New England, the first half total currently sits at 27.5 or 28 depending on where you shop. There is a real head scratching contrast in the first half play of Patriots games this season. What’s very interesting to note is that their road games have been significantly higher scoring than those played in Foxboro. In six of their eight road games this season, New England’s first halves have totaled 27 or more points and those contests averaged 31 points. Conversely, Patriots home games resulted in 23 first half points or less seven of 10 times for an average of 21.7 points. The initial reaction to those extremely different first half point totals would be that New England’s last two games have been at home and their defense has improved of late. Therefore it stands to reason that their first half totals would average out lower. That argument sinks in immediately when you Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling Update: Bettors continue to flock towards Giants

01.24.2012     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

We're about 36 hour removed from sportsbooks posting their openers for Super Bowl XLVI. Up until this point a majority of the money has come in on the New York Giants. We mentioned yesterday that most offshore shops opened with New England -3.5. Bettors however pounced on the Giants and the key number of +3.5. The line then dipped to New England -3 (-120) followed shortly thereafter by a flat -3 (-110). Then yesterday afternoon another wave of Giants money came in dropping the line to New England -3 (+105/EV)/New York +3 (-125/-120). There are even a few offshore shops (5Dimes, BetOnline) currently offering the Pats at -2.5 (-125). Pinnacle's dropdown menu has New England -2.5 (-120). In Las Vegas, every major sportsbook is showing New England -3 (EV or -105).

Gambling on Super Bowl XLVI: Tom Brady vs. New York Giants defense

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

As we approach Super Bowl XLVI, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady against the New York Giants pass rush presents a fascinating matchup.  In the 2008 Super Bowl, the Giants were clearly able to frustrate Brady as New England’s vaunted offense was held to 14 points and under 300 totla yards.  Much has changed over the last four years, but Brady was banged around and lacking confidence once again in their Week 9 loss (24-20) to the Giants.  In fact, while watching that game it was one of the few times I’d witnessed Brady lose some of his composure. For good measure, Brady was sickened with his play in the AFC championship game against the sturdy Baltimore defense.

"As time goes on, I still can’t watch highlights from that game," Brady said this morning in his Read more

New Jersey's Chris Christie not biting on Super Bowl bets

01.23.2012     01:55 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was recently asked if he'd participate in a little political wagering for the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. These never involve any type of pointspread and as far as we know, money never exchanges hands. The winner typically takes home a crate of some local fare like bratwurst or bagels while the loser has to (gasp!) wear the winning team's jersey to work on Monday. When asked if there was anything on the table with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Christie said those types of bets are “really stupid.” He did however say he’d get involved if Patrick talked too much smack.

“It’s just politicians trying to get themselves in the newspaper on what’s really a sporting event,” he said. “As all of you know, I’m in the news enough. I don’t need that as an excuse.”

But if the Massachusetts governor called him up and “challenged his manhood” or “shames me into it,” that could be Read more

Las Vegas oddsmaker surprised by betting action on New York Giants

01.23.2012     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wynn sportsbook director John Avello was surprised by the early money coming in on the New York Giants for Super Bowl XLVI.

“I’m a little bit surprised,” Wynn sports book director John Avello said of the early movement. “I think it was an easy number to make. I was thinking 4 the entire time with the Giants. I was thinking Patriots by 6.5 over the 49ers.”

“Everything was shaping up perfectly there before the David Tyree catch,” MGM Resorts International sports book director Jay Rood recalled last week. “We needed the favorite winning, but not covering. So, no, I think the Giants and Patriots would give us a great opportunity this year. The matchup would be great to drive interest.”

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

Odds on Super Bowl XLVI were posted immediately following last night's NFC Championship. Offshore, CRIS, Pinnacle and 5Dimes opened New England -3.5 but most of the early money came in on New York. In Las Vegas, the Hilton opened -3 and hasn't moved while the Wynn opened -4 (down to -3.5ev). Caesars also opened -4 but was bet down to -3.

“The public will still like New England,” Colbert told The Associated Press. “I don’t think people are actually hip to how good these NFC teams are.”

Executive Race and Sports Director Jay Kornegay of the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino says an injury to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski could have a big effect on the line, because if he doesn’t play the Giants Read more
