SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fairway Jay was recently asked to cover the new Epic Poker League as a successful Las Vegas sports handicapper, poker player and gaming and media partner through Sportsmemo.  Federated Sports + Gaming launched the new Epic Poker League and the PR firm of Rogers and Cowan asked Jay to provide some insight, analysis and coverage from a Las Vegas perspective.  Jay covered the NBC Heads Up Poker Championship at Caesars Palace in March 2011, and he is on site for some of the events and coverage for the new Epic Poker League at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Jay not only talked with the poker players, tournament directors and officials, and other media and poker personnel, but he took his coverage to another level when he won the Media Poker Tournament Event and a $1,500 seat at the Pro/Am Tournament (picture of Jay with EPL commish Annie Duke upper left). Cantor Gaming goes after Brandywine Bookmaking CEO

08.04.2011     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
Cantor Gaming is suing a former executive for "breach of confidentiality obligations". Joseph Asher left Cantor in 2007 and then created Brandywine Bookmaking which he now plans to sell to UK bookmaker William Hill for $15.7 million. Cantor feels Asher will end up working for William Hill and "attempt to divert" potential business opportunities. Asher claims that he did nothing wrong and Cantor filed the suit only after they caught wind of the potential William Hill deal.

"I left Cantor over four years ago and Brandywine has been operating for over three years. Cantor didn't file its complaint until after we signed a deal to sell the company to William Hill. The timing says a lot. Any allegation that I have done anything wrong is ridiculous and totally false," Asher said.

Vaccaro says NFL betting much better than last year

08.04.2011     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly
In a recent article for Las Vegas Weekly, Lucky's oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro said that betting on the NFL was thus far "way ahead" of last year. Vaccaro went on to talk about various line moves including Arizona's big jump in Week 1 following the acquisition of quarterback Kevin Kolb.

“The ‘smart guys’ jumped in and took a few positions right away,” Vaccaro says. “But the overall ticket count is way up, too. As a bookmaker, you’ve got to love all this activity.”

“We took a bet at 3.5 and we took a bet at 4,” Vaccaro says. “Kolb may or may not be any good, but people realize he’s better than what they had last year.

Bettors jump on early football lines offered in Las Vegas

08.03.2011     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
The Wall Street Journal has a feature on early college and NFL lines offered at various Las Vegas casinos.

"Believe it or not, the lockout did not affect betting one bit," said Cantor's sports book director Mike Colbert, who started offering the early lines two years ago and has watched the handle increase every year. (Bettors flocked to the windows this week to bet on the Arizona Cardinals after they acquired quarterback Kevin Kolb, but perhaps for naught: "We made all the Cardinals numbers assuming he would be there," Colbert said.)

"If you spend three hours researching one game, realistically, the Golden Nugget can't match that," Fezzik said. Said another professional gambler who declined to be identified: "It looks like their opening line was pretty terrible in a lot of spots, so it would be a pretty easy way for smaller guys who are up on their research to Read more

Larry Johnson and Greg Anthony walk into a casino...

08.02.2011     06:40 AM     Printer Friendly
Straight from the source. Former UNLV star Larry Johnson discusses his first and reportedly only casino experience while playing for the Runnin' Rebels.

"Gambling wasn’t a temptation to me, said Johnson, who wasn’t even aware UNLV games could be wagered on in sports books. "Me and Greg had about $60 between us. We were about to eat and go catch a show. Greg is from Vegas and wanted to stop at one of the casinos. He put like $20 on blackjack and ended up winning $40.

"Greg then turned that $60 into $100 and I thought it was pretty neat to see that happen in just four or five minutes," Johnson said. "That was the extent of my gambling the two years I was here."

Registration now open for Las Vegas Hilton NFL Super Contest

08.02.2011     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Registration for this year's Las Vegas Hilton NFL Super Contest opened Monday. The contest format remains that same as it has always been: $1,500 entry fee, pick five games ATS per week. Last year's winner was a Boston finance worker who took home just over $200K. Attendance for this year's event reportedly could reach 400.

Payout based on 400 entries
1st Place: $240,000 (40 percent of all entry fees)
2nd Place: $96,000 (16 percent)
3rd Place: $48,000 (8 percent)
4th Place: $30,000 (5 percent)
5th-10th Place: $21,000 (3.5 percent)
11th-20th Place: $6,000 (1 percent)

"Some contests change the fee, or put college games in there," sportsbook manager Ed Salmons said. "Ours is always the same. It’s the old, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’"

Sportsbooks rejoice following end of NFL lockout

07.26.2011     07:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oddsmakers and sportsbooks are giddy now that the 2011 NFL season is official. The Nevada Gaming Control Board said that football (college and pro) made up 43% of the state's sports betting in 2010. An oddsmaker from Bodog claimed that 25% of the company's bets were on the NFL and 15% of its players are considered "NFL only".

"We had some rough estimates around town as far as the impact that the NFL has on bottom-line numbers. I've heard anything from 10 percent to 70 percent," says Jay Kornegay, director of the Las Vegas Hilton Super Book, the largest sports book in Vegas. "It's a wide range. My best estimate would be that the NFL represents about 35 percent of our bottom line."

"You can't replace the NFL. You can't just put up ping-pong. It doesn't happen that way," he says. "There are certain things we have to address if there weren't an NFL season, like Read more

Las Vegas bookie busted after 32 years on the lam

07.25.2011     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even in our most creative hour, we couldn't make this up. Here is the semi-quick version (full version). In 1979, Arthur Gerald Jones disappeared from his Chicago home after accumulating an enormous gambling debt. He was eventually declared legally dead after authorities found his empty car at the airport.

Jones though wasn't dead but instead moved to Las Vegas, worked as a bookie, and up until last week, assumed the identity of another man. That man, Clifton Goodenough, worked for the federal government for more than 20 years and was catching heat from the IRS since 1995 as a result of "miscellaneous" incomes. Goodenough went so far as to send complaint letters to Arizona senator John McCain about this issue but no one did a thing. Goodenough even tracked Jones down (Jones was now going by a new alias) and spoke to him on the Read more
