NBA Handicapping: Lakers now -450 to make Western Conference playoffs

03.12.2013     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

The other day, LVH's Jeff Sherman tweeted that the Los Angeles Lakers were a pick 'em price (-110 "yes", -110 "no") to make the NBA Playoffs. Since then, LA has gone 3-1 and the price has skyrocketed to -450 "yes" and +375 "no." The Lakers are an 8-point road favorite tonight in Orlando.

New York at Golden State -2.5 O/U 201.5
Recommendation: Golden State

This is the mother of all good spots for Golden State tonight.  The Warriors are in short turnaround revenge for a hard fought, spread covering loss at Madison Square Garden on their most recent road swing.  And Golden State is coming off back-to-back home losses, their first back-to-back losses at home all year.  For a team fighting to end their playoff drought, tonight’s game brings a particular sense of urgency.

Warriors head coach Mark Jackson: “I believe in my guys. We'll be fine, but we have to respond." Leading scorer Stephan Curry: “We're just not showing up right now. Individually everyone has to step up and just play better."  Golden State should get a major boost with the expected return of All Star big man David Lee – the NBA’s leader in double doubles this season -- back to the lineup today after missing Saturday’s loss to Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Dallas Mavericks at Minnesota Timberwolves

Dallas -6.5 at Minnesota O/U 200.5
Recommendation: Dallas

Somehow, someway, the Mavericks are still in the Western Conference playoff hunt sitting just three games out of the eighth and final spot. The possibility of making the playoffs has Dallas playing with game-by-game focus which is more than this crippled Minnesota team has going for it right now. Down to just nine players and missing three key starters including center Nikola Peković, the Timberwolves are running on fumes. Dallas’ frontline advantages and their depth figure to be problematic for Minnesota tonight and it helps that the Mavs continue to be a rested team. Without any semblance of a go to scorer, the T-Wolves faltered miserably in their first game without Pekovic last night against Denver getting outscored 61-39 in the second half. Back-to-back games with a shorthanded team coming from the mile high altitude doesn’t bode well for Minnesota against a Dallas team still playing with a Read more

NBA Betting Recap: Oklahoma City Thunder win, New York Knicks cover

The Oklahoma City Thunder survived a one-point thriller Thursday Night in New York. It wasn’t supposed to be a thriller, as the rested Thunder were 8-point favorites over a Knicks team that was missing Carmelo Anthony…playing in a back-to-back spot…and playing its fourth game in five nights. OKC didn’t play much defense until the fourth quarter…using a 20-13 win there to salvage a relatively unimpressive 96-95 victory.

Oddly enough, that 20-13 quarter brought Oklahoma City to 20-13 this year against teams playing .500 ball or better. Their third-best overall league record drops to a tie for fifth best in the SuperLeague.

Records vs. .500 or Better

San Antonio 23-10 (.696)

Miami 23-11 (.676)

LA Clippers 24-13 (.648)

Denver 24-13 (.648)

Memphis 20-13 (.606)

Oklahoma City 20-13 (.606)

Hey, winning 61% against good teams is nothing to sneeze at. The problem is…once you Read more

On a night with so many side-by-side stories breaking in basketball…the biggest drama involved the incredible turnarounds that could loom very large in the 2013 Los Angeles Lakers Saga.

*Utah, currently #8 in the Western Conference standings, led Cleveland (20-40 and playing out the string) by a score of 76-68 entering the fourth quarter.

*Utah lost the fourth quarter 36-25 to a team with nothing to play for, and dropped their fifth game in the last six outings to further tighten the choke collar that’s been around their neck.

*The LA Lakers, starting an hour later than Utah, fell way behind New Orleans on night two of a back-to-back. They spent much of their evening figuring they were going to take a hit in the standings. Entering the fourth quarter, the Lakers trailed New Orleans 93-75.

*Buoyed by the great news from Cleveland, the Lakers won the fourth quarter 33-9…that’s THIRTY-THREE to NINE on the road on night two of a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Dallas hopes to avoid getting run out of the gym vs. Houston

Houston at Dallas -2 O/U 222.5

Everyone knows the Houston Rockets like to push the pace and score in transition. But what they did the Dallas on Sunday (136-103 win) was pretty amazing/embarrassing. There are conflicting reports on exactly how many fast break points the Rockets had (it was north of 35) but Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle referred to the amount as an "intergalactic record." They reportedly worked on transition defense in practice but if you read some of the quotes, the Mavericks seem well aware of the fact that they just can’t seem to guard anyone.

“They only had 41, which is an intergalactic record,” Carlisle said.

“They sliced and diced us, particularly in the third quarter,” he said of Houston’s 44-17 Read more

NBA Handicapping: Bullseye Officially Moves to Utah's Back, Bucks Desperate to Rise in East

Normally, a Utah Jazz/Milwaukee Bucks matchup wouldn’t be the showcase game of the night in the NBA. But, that was definitely the case this evening because both teams had a lot at stake…and then we went overtime!

*Utah knew that a loss would drop them into eighth place in the West, just two games ahead of the surging Los Angeles Lakers. They thought they were relatively safe a couple of weeks ago. But, home losses as favorites to Boston and Atlanta were service breaks that came at the worst possible time.

*Milwaukee is #8 in the East, and safely in the brackets because everyone from 9-15 is so far back that it would take a few miracles to unseat the Bucks. But, as you know, #8 is a HORRIBLE place to be in the Miami Heat’s conference. Milwaukee has a chance to catch Boston…and possibly Brooklyn.

Both teams wanted this one bad…and played like it. Let’s review the numbers…
