NBA Handicapping: San Antonio Spurs prepare for life on the highway

01.24.2014     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The San Antonio Spurs are about to embark on their annual "Rodeo Road Trip" where they'll play 12 of 14 on the road starting tonight in Atlanta.

"I'm disappointed for the team, because this is a time when we always try to make hay," Popovich said. "Historically, that 'Rodeo Road Trip,' that time before, during and after the All-Star break has always been good for us. We've got a lot of away games. It's a great time to come together and get the bunker mentality, and all that trade crap. But it works for us. So this road trip, and the one right after it, you'd like to be at full strength for that because it has been important for us getting momentum for the season. So I'm disappointed for them.

"But secondly, I'm strangely excited about playing the other guys and watching them fill in. I think it steps up the energy a little bit, because your back's against the wall. You just look at it a different way. That's kind of exciting."

NBA Gambling Alert: Sacramento's Cousins and Gay not expected to play vs. Indiana

Indiana -10.5 at Sacramento O/U 196

According to Sports Options and various Twitter posts, Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay are expected to miss tonight's game against Indiana.

“It’s tough, especially those two guys,” forward Derrick Williams said after Wednesday’s loss at Houston. “They lead us in scoring pretty much every night. It’s a big rebounding piece and our big man in the middle. Rudy has been playing great as well, but like I said, other guys have to step up.”

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Houston Rockets

Portland at Houston -2 O/U 218
Recommendation: Houston

After playing a pair in Portland already this season where Houston earned a split, they now get their shot versus the Blazers. Most recent meeting on 12/12 saw Houston down just two 97-95 with four minutes to go before final 111-104 verdict. All indications from the road performances point toward the Rockets having the proper ingredients to match up with Portland including the 29 and 32 point outbursts by Dwight Howard. Houston’s defense has actually been pretty solid against the Blazers holding them to FG%’s of 41.4 and 43.8 along with 3 pt%’s of 32.3 & 29.6 which are all below Portland’s season averages. “Texas Triangle” has seen Portland rattle off back-to-back victories but despite their solid play recently (5 consecutive wins, 4-1 ATS), there are some concerns. Portland was on a money burning 1-5 ATS on the road prior to the Texas stops and their three SU wins were against sub-.500 teams Read more

NBA Handicapping: Adelman tries to fire up Timberwolves by saying they stink

01.17.2014     02:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota head coach Rick Adelman didn't mince words when he told his team they weren't even close to being playoff caliber. The Timberwolves are a pick 'em for tonight's game at Toronto.

“We have to face facts that we’re a .500 team,” he said. “Right now we’re below .500 [18-20]. I told them, ‘If you think you’re a playoff team, why don’t you just forget it? Because you haven’t proven that you are. You haven’t gone out and really established yourselves yet.’ ”

“We need to develop some sort of edge,” forward Kevin Love said. “We talk a lot of trash, we are edgy, in practice. We just need to transition that into the game. We have it in us, we just need to go out and do it.”

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic

Charlotte -1 at Orlando O/U 190
Recommendation: Charlotte

Charlotte’s goal heading into the season was to make the playoffs following the signing of Al Jefferson. Jefferson was a big investment for the Bobcats, and while highly questionable, with a $41 million three-year deal on the books tanking wasn’t going to be an option. They actually hired a good coach this time around in Steve Clifford who has gotten the team to pay attention to details on the defensive end of the floor. Everything was falling into place as Charlotte owned a solid 14-15 record around the holidays but the schedule stepped up, including a trip out west, and they dropped 9 of their last 11 games. But they’ve had an opportunity to catch their breath and I feel like they’ll be able to regroup for tonight’s contest. Meanwhile, the Magic are a flat-out poorly coached, bad basketball team. They own a 10-29 record, and there’s no doubt this team doesn’t really care about wins this Read more

NBA Gambling Trends: Memphis Grizzlies have profitable profile vs. Sacramento

Sacramento at Memphis -5.5 O/U 200

The Memphis Grizzlies play host to the Sacramento Kings tonight which could well bring into play one of the Grizzlies’ best profiles. Check out these results mined from the database: When Memphis scores 100 or more points they are 55-7 (89%) straight up since the start of the 2011 season. They clock in at a hefty 47-15 (76%) against the spread in that sample. But perhaps the most eye popping figure of the bunch is their totals which have gone over at a 92% clip (56-5-1) when they score 100 or more!

Compare that to the rest of the league and you’ll see Memphis outperforms them in every facet. The league comes in at 72% straight up, 69% against the spread clip while going over at a 79% rate.
Sacramento has made some roster moves and had a little uptick in results of late but they are still a rather poor defensive team that plays at a fast tempo. The Kings give up an average of more than 104 points per game and have allowed at Read more
