NBA asks for DFS regulation, remains close buddies with FanDuel

10.23.2015     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver joined the party of those calling for some sort of regulation on Daily Fantasy Sports. Of course, in the meantime, the NBA will remain partnered with FanDuel because who cares about regulation when you're in the midst of a four-year deal that has you making money hand over fist.

"There should be a regulatory framework; there should be increased transparency for consumers," Silver said in a telephone interview. "I think it would ultimately aid the industry. In fact, I think we're seeing the marketplace impacted, because there's not a clear regulatory framework right now."

"We strongly believe the games on our site -- and daily fantasy sports in general -- are legal. We are seeing a number of state regulators and other authorities taking a reasoned and measured approach to the daily fantasy sports business and hope that trend continues along with due consideration for the interests of sports fans across the country who love to play these

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Philadelphia (Harang) at Arizona (De La Rosa) -145 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

With Arizona’s Rubby De La Rosa continuing to struggle versus LH bats this matchup is not a favorable one for him. De La Rosa added a sinker to his pitching repertoire this year in an attempt to help him handle lefties but he’s lacked command of it which has directly led to a left handed field day against him (.305 BA, .360 OBP, and .931 OPS). Tonight he faces a Phillies lineup that’s able to stack six legitimate lefties in the lineup now that Chase Utley is back swinging well so it figures to be a difficult order to navigate through tonight. Since the All-Star Break, Philadelphia is averaging just a shade under 5.5 runs per game and have to believe they’ll have similar production in this spot. They may need a bunch of runs tonight because their pitching looks a bit shaky at the start and at the end. Veteran starter Aaron Harang’s performances have been just miserable lately as indicated by his 7.45 ERA and 1.84 WHIP over his last 8 starts totaling 44.2 IP. Only 1 of those 8 starts has been a quality outing and he’s given up at least 4 Read more

NBA Gambling: League won't place expansion team in Las Vegas

07.20.2015     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
An NBA expansion team in Las Vegas? Not likely.

"There are no obstacles whatsoever in terms of the city to us coming to Las Vegas," Silver said. "We had an All-Star Game here (in 2007). We chose to put our largest summer league here. We have never suggested the fact sports betting takes place legally in Las Vegas is an impediment to us coming here. The reception we have received from this community has been terrific.

"The ultimate issue is that we are just not in an expansion mode right now. It doesn’t mean that expansion will never be in our future, but it’s just not at the moment."

The NBA wants Canadians to bet on its games

06.25.2015     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA continues to show a pro-sports betting stance as it recently withdrew its opposition to single game wagering in Canada.

"Consistent with the NBA's current position regarding legalized sports betting in the United States, the NBA is no longer opposed to legalized sports betting in Canada so long as there is an appropriate legislative framework that protects the integrity of the game under strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards. These would include, at a minimum, mandatory monitoring and reporting of unusual betting-line movements; a licensing protocol for betting operators; minimum-age verification measures; geo-blocking technology to ensure betting is available only where it is legal; mechanisms to identify and exclude people with gambling problems; and education about responsible gaming."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

San Diego (Shields) -110 at Arizona (De La Rosa) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: San Diego

Momentum can be a funny thing in baseball. The San Diego Padres had endured a rough 4-game losing streak which partially led to the dismissal of manager Bud Black earlier this week and Pat Murphy becoming the interim manager for the rest of the season. The Padres losing streak was finally snapped on Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics and now that this team has finally tasted a victory, might we see a bit of a turn in the other direction for what has been an underachieving team? They certainly have one of the guys they want to have on the mound to keep the winning vibe going tonight with James Shields who is coming off an absolute gem in his last start (7 IP, 1 ER vs. LAD). It was part of a nice run for Shields as he's allowed 3 runs or less in six of his last seven trips to the hill. He had a bit of a tough time when he faced Arizona earlier this season but the Diamondbacks collectively still own a paltry .208 team batting average in 77 career ABs against him. On the flip side, Rubby De La Rosa has had his share of troubles allowing 16 runs on Read more

NBA Gambling: Bettors cash in big on Golden State's blowout win

06.12.2015     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Holy Cow That Line Can't Be Right side was the Never In Doubt side as Golden State's turned in a 21-point, Game 4 victory last night and made a lot of bettors happy. After being outplayed for a good portion of the first three games, the Warriors opened -2.5 for Game 4. After being bet up to -3, Cleveland money pushed the line back to -2.5. But then came the steam. Yesterday afternoon, Golden State money started to pour in and didn't stop as the line at CRIS peaked at -4.5 (-119) 45 minutes per tip.

With the series tied 2-2, the adjusted series price has jumped from Golden State -115 to -400. The Warriors are currently -8.5 home favorites for Sunday's Game 5.

NBA Handicapping: Oddsmakers and bettors continue to respect Golden State Warriors

06.11.2015     09:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Through three games of the NBA Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers have unquestionably outplayed the Golden State Warriors. And yet despite that the Warriors are still getting a lot of respect in the betting markets. Despite being down 2-1 in the series, Golden State is still a short favorite (-115) to win the title. And for tonight's Game 4, after opening -2.5 they were bet up to -3 before settling back in at -2.5 (plenty of -3's in Las Vegas). Public-wise there appears to be a divide: those who feel Golden State will bounce back and those going off the first three games with Game 3 tickets nearly split down the middle. And after Game 1’s total closed 203.5 we’ve seen a 10-point adjustment with tonight’s total 193.5/193.
