NBA Handicapper Free Play: Houston Rockets at Denver Nuggets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -4 at Denver O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Houston

NBA starting lineups and rotations can often create a delicate balance between winning and losing. There’s probably no better current example of that than the Houston Rockets who are now playing the best basketball they’ve played all season. Houston’s offseason acquisition of speedy guard Ty Lawson was expected to increase and improve an already high tempo, high scoring offense. Instead, the insertion of Lawson into the lineup seemed to disrupt rather than enhance. The team’s mediocre performance was a key ingredient in the early season firing of Kevin McHale and the subsequent negative chatter about the novice like ability of new coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Then, nine games ago Bickerstaff made a starting lineup switch going back to the old look with Patrick Beverly at point guard. That subtle change has turned into a 7-2 SU and 6-3 ATS run and it has quieted a portion of Bickerstaff’s critics. Beverly’s positive influence on Houston’s starting lineup chemistry is undeniable as his hounding defense, 3-point shooting, and floor leadership are all elements the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Pacers try to shore up porous defense

12.11.2015     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The other day we talked about Washington's defensive struggles coinciding with trying to play up-tempo. The Indiana Pacers are in a similar situation after allowing 131, 110, and 123 in regulation their last three games. From a season-long perspective, Indiana has actually been solid defensively with the eighth-best efficiency (99.4) in the league. After a couple of intense practices and two days off the Pacers play host to Miami tonight.

“We were terrible in transition, terrible with the fast break, terrible rebounding, guarding our own man, cuts …,” said George and it seemed as if he could go on.

“We were struggling in the Portland and Utah games, but I think Golden State really exposed those flaws

NBA Handicapping: Sportsbook offers prop bet on Golden State's regular season win total

12.09.2015     10:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oddsmakers are giving the Golden State Warriors (23-0) are pretty good shot at topping the 1996 Chicago Bulls' regular season record of 72-10. BetOnline currently as a prop bet of ‘How Many Wins For The Warriors’ lined at 73 or more or 72 or fewer with -115 juice on both sides. As of yesterday, FiveThirtyEight.com gave the Warriors a 54% shot at hitting 72 wins and a 44.1% chance at winning 73. Hell, they're 10% to win 77 games! The Warriors' strength of schedule thus far ranks 17th. Way too early to analyze the SOS of the remainder their schedule but note the following games:

12/25 vs. Cleveland
1/18 at Cleveland
2/6 vs. Oklahoma City
2/10-2/27 Seven-game road trip including at OKC
3/3 vs. Oklahoma City
3/19 at San Antonio (2nd of B2Bs)
4/7 vs. San Antonio
4/10 at San Antonio (2nd of B2Bs)

NBA Gambling: Utah Jazz allow 100+ in three straight games without Gobert

12.09.2015     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Utah Jazz continue to press forward without the services of defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert who is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Gobert has missed the last three games as Utah allowed 114, 119 (OT), and 103. Last night, Sacramento shot 55.8% en route to a 114-106 victory. On the season, Utah is 1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS without Gobert. Four of the five games have gone over the total. The Jazz are -3.5 home favorites vs. New York tonight.

"It's going to be 100 percent," he said. "I'm not going to be back if it's not 100 percent. This type of injury, it's not like a sprained ankle when you can come back with a little bit of pain. It's a ligament. So if I'm not 100 percent, I won't come back."

Gobert added, "It's painful not to be able to play, but I'd rather miss a couple games more and be sure and not miss four more months because it's not healed and I get hurt again."

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards remain without an identity

12.09.2015     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.

Like a lot of teams in the NBA, the Washington Wizards witnessed what the Golden State Warriors accomplished last season and thought, hey, let's give this up-tempo, small-ball thing a try. Thus far, it hasn't worked out as the Wizards (9-10 SU/ATS) currently rank 22nd in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Last season, they ranked 19th and 5th, respectively. Washington is a -3 home favorite over Houston with a total of 215.5 for tonight.

NBA Handicapping: Spurs cover everything imaginable in win over 76ers

12.08.2015     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
Take a look at Pinnacle's in-game pointspread during San Antonio's 119-68 blowout over Philadelphia. Not only did the Spurs cover every line that was posted but did so without the services of Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard. The 76ers travel to Brooklyn on Thursday.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Milwaukee Bucks

12.07.2015     10:26 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland pk at Milwaukee O/U 198.5
Recommendation: Portland

Jason Kidd’s recent determined effort to get better defensive efforts out of his Milwaukee Bucks squad is paying dividends. Over their last five games, Milwaukee has held opponents to 95 points or less four times and to an overall average of 89.8 points per game. In Saturday night’s game versus New York, the Knicks shot 42.1% from the field which is the highest allowed by Milwaukee during the five-game span. The Bucks were on a three game under the total streak with game results averaging 167 ppg but their last couple have hit 197 and gone over. Bookmakers adjustments obviously had something to do with that but a freakish 71-point fourth quarter Friday night against the Pistons followed by near 50% FG shooting by Milwaukee on Saturday certainly helped. Tonight’s total sits at 198-198.5 which considering Portland’s style seems pretty tight without a lot of margin for error. Where there is some wiggle room however is in line where the current price is a pick ‘em.

Fundamentals should come into play in this contest and figure they’ll help the Trail Read more

NBA Handicapping: Philadelphia 76ers in back-to-back spot following rare win

12.02.2015     10:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is a question most NBA bettors are probably asking themselves today: How will the Philadelphia 76ers respond following a win? Considering they haven't tasted victory since late March of last season, it's a fair inquiry. Out of curiosity we looked back over the last two-plus seasons to see exactly how Philly fared off a victory. From a straight up perspective, they're 10-26. Against the spread, a semi-impressive 17-19. Philly is  +8.5 underdog at New York this evening.

"They truly stayed together," said Sixers coach Brett Brown, who improved his career coaching record (all in Philly) to 38-145. "I'm pleased for the city. We didn't want this streak continuing. I'm pleased for our fans. They deserve it. Obviously, this is a relief on many levels, but we're gonna get greedy. We want a little bit more, and that's how we'll approach [Wednesday] night [in New York against the Knicks]."
