Texas A&M gets big performance from new quarterback

11.01.2010     05:48 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma -4 at Texas A&M

Last Saturday, Texas A&M started quarterback Ryan Tannehill over Jerrod Johnson and the results were very positive. Tannehill finished 36-of-50 for 449 yards and four touchdowns in the Aggies' 45-27 win over Texas Tech. Original starter Jerrod Johnson had struggled with turnovers (nine INTs) and sacks (25), something Tannehill has up until this point managed to avoid (1 INT, 2 sacks).

"We've always thought he's a terrific player,” said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "You watch him throw in pre-game, you're like, 'Wow, the ball really flies off his hand.' He has a good arm and is a good decision maker. He's athletic and mobile and has a very talented group of skill players (to throw to).”

Oregon at USC +6.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: USC

This game will generate just a little interest and betting action, wouldn’t you say? The no. 1 team in the land waddles their way to LA as the Oregon Ducks (7-0) try to remain unbeaten and on top of the Pac-10 and college football world. In their way is UCS (5-2), ranked no. 24 in the polls and not eligible for post season play due to NCAA ban. This is the Trojans bowl game, and tune in on ABC tonight to see if the Trojans can pull the upset.

These two teams were the favorites to win the Pac-10 title by many experts. No doubt Oregon has earned their high ranking and praise, as the Ducks are speed and scoring animals running the spread offense averaging 55 points per game and over 560 yards per game. Note however that in two road games on grass at Tennessee and Arizona State, the Ducks averaged 45 points per game and 416 yards offense. And it was raining in Los Angeles Saturday morning. Oregon does have solid speed on defense, and their special Read more

Michigan -3 at Penn State O/U 55.5
Recommendaton: Michigan

I made a play and used Michigan in a contest earlier this week at less than -3 and the Wolverines have taken a little money as a field goal road favorite at Penn State Saturday night. Michigan (5-2) and Penn State (4-3) are both 1-2 in conference play and the Nittany Lions have not met expectations with little to celebrate in Happy Valley. Penn State coach Joe Paterno announced that former walk-on quarterback Matt McGloin will start at quarterback as freshman starter Rob Bolden suffered a concussion in last weeks game. So a already inefficient offense averaging the fewest first downs per game and just 20 points per game (18 in conference play) now has more concerns at quarterback. While Michigan’s defense has been dreadful, the Nittany Lions will have to generate offense to keep up with the ‘Wolves potent attack. Despite a Wolverine pass defense that allows nearly 300 yards per game and over 8.0 yards per pass play, look for the Read more

Michigan State +6.5 at Iowa O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Michigan State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

The Michigan State Spartans travel to Iowa City for their toughest remaining test of the season as they shoot to stay unbeaten and on top of the Big Ten standings. MSU is 8-0 for the first time in over 40 years and ABC television will carry the action as Iowa tries to rebound off a disappointing 31-30 home loss last week to Wisconsin.

We’ve cashed big on the Spartans with a pair of top 20* Big Drive bombers when Michigan State beat both Michigan and Illinois by big margins. Last week the Spartans made a remarkable second half come back to beat Northwestern on the road, 35-27, and rewarded their betting backers with an even more miraculous pointspread cover thanks to a late touchdown after Northwestern turned the ball over on downs.

The breaks, trick plays, fake kicks, punts and solid fundamentals are all working for the Spartans and while the pressure may be building, so too is Read more

West Virginia focused on run game against UConn

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia -6 at UConn O/U 44.5

Because of the inconsistent health of running back Noel Devine, West Virginia has had a difficult time running the football of late. Eliminate the 219-yard effort against woeful UNLV, and the Mountaineers averaged only 81 ypg against LSU, USF and Syracuse. Tonight, they face a UConn run defense that has had issues. In games against FBS foes, the Huskies have allowed 173.1 ypg. West Virginia ran for a season-high 234 yards in last year's 28-24 win over UConn. Devine was not listed on this week’s injury report.

"We may run a little more," Stewart said.

"I thought our quarterback did a pretty good job, but maybe Bill Stewart put too much on our quarterback," Stewart said. "I don't think so, but we've gone back to what coaches do: 'What's this guy do best? What's that guy do best?' If we think we can run the ball a little Read more

Penn State to start McGloin at quarterback

Michigan -3 at Penn State O/U 53.5

Penn State will start former walk-on quarterback Matt McGloin this weekend against Michigan. MCGloin threw two touchdowns in relief of Robert Bolden (concussion) last week against Minnesota.

"We are going to go with Mac to start," Paterno said. "There is an outside chance Bolden will be OK, and we will see how it goes. Mac is good enough to get the job done."

Betting Preview: Arizona Wildcats at UCLA Bruins

Arizona at UCLA +9.5 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: UCLA
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT

Two extremes are fresh in bettors’ minds when talking about UCLA and Arizona. For the Bruins, last Thursday on national TV, Oregon did whatever it wanted to do en route to a 60-13 victory. There weren’t a lot of positives to say about UCLA’s performance outside of them not being the first nor the last team to feel Oregon’s wrath. Arizona meanwhile was taking advantage of a good situational play as Washington traveled down to the desert off an overtime victory over Oregon State. The Wildcats jump out early and never looked back as they cruised to a 44-14 win.

As a result of what was last seen, I believe we are getting some decent value with the Bruins at home this weekend. Last season, Arizona was never favored by more than a field goal on the highway including their rivalry tilt against 4-8 Arizona State. And of their six road games, they won three by margins of four, three and five. This year, Read more
