College Football Gambling Notes: Cal seeks revenge against Washington

09.23.2011     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
California at Washington -1 O/U 58.5

PAC-12 opener for both schools with most of the money coming in on Cal (down from opener of 3). A revenge game of sorts for the Golden Bears who lost on a last second play to the Huskies in last year's season finale – it kept Cal out of the postseason. Washington quarterback Keith Price has looked every bit as effective as Jake Locker though there are some concerns about his health. Washington's offense has been extremely sharp thus far but the defense hasn't.

“Everyone knows what happened last year, so the team’s pretty fired up about it,” linebacker Mychal Kendricks Read more

Using Power Offenses for your College Football Handicap

Submitted by blog entry.
In past seasons, I often write and analyze college football teams that feature a strong, balanced offense that both run and pass for at least 200 yards. I usually post this in October after teams have played 2-3 conference games because we can better gauge the statistical profiles since many teams from BSC conferences are playing weaker opponents early in the season. So while the stats and numbers can be skewed, it’s still worth noting which teams are putting together strong offensive stats with balance in the run and pass games.

Last season near the end of October, there were 29 teams that rushed for at least 200 yards per game (ypg) and 75 teams that passed for at least 200 yards per game. So it’s obvious that if a team runs for 200+ ypg and passes for much more than 200 ypg, the offensive production is even greater. Currently there are 34 teams that rush for at least 200 ypg and 82 teams that pass for 200 or more yards. What I have done at this stage of the season is to provide the “200 club” with some additional parameters. Teams on this list (see below) average at least 4.60 yards per rush (ypr – NCAA stats), at least 7.0 yards Read more

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: Central Florida Knights at BYU Cougars

Central Florida at BYU (5 pm PT - ESPN)
CRIS Opener: BYU -3.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: BYU -2 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: BYU -3.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: BYU -2

Fairway Jay’s Betting Take: Both teams are off disappointing losses as favorites last week, but BYU was ambushed by rival Utah, 54-10. The Cougars are licking their wounds and have little offensive punch. Expect the struggles to continue against a strong UCF stop unit that sports the best pass defense in the nation. The Knights held Florida International to just 238 yards last week but came up short due to a fumble returned for a touchdown and a muffed punt. UCF outgained their first three foes and held them each to season-lows in offensive production. Head coach George O'Leary is 13-3 ATS on the road and 8-2 ATS as an underdog. They also boast a balanced Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Alabama pass defense can be exposed

09.22.2011     02:02 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Arkansas at Alabama -12 O/U 50.5

Good article from ESPN's KC Joyner on Alabama's defense and the perception that it is completely unstoppable. It may be to some teams but Joyner points out that the Crimson Tide struggled against strong passing attacks last season, including this week's opponent Arkansas.

In 2010, the Crimson Tide faced three teams that had offenses ranked in the top 14 in passing yards per attempt: the Tigers, Razorbacks and South Carolina Gamecocks. Alabama's composite defensive numbers in those contests were simply awful: 78 attempts, 55 completions, 774 yards (9.9 YPA), seven TDs and four interceptions.

That equates to 9.9 yards per attempt (YPA) and a 173.2 passer rating allowed, both of which are incredibly poor numbers.

NCAAF Gambling Game Notes: Kansas State Wildcats at Miami Hurricanes

Kansas State at Miami (FL) -12 O/U 47.5

Some notes on Saturday's Kansas State-Miami (FL) matchup. KSU head coach Bill Synder was born when FDR was in office (seriously) so he's at a point in his life where beating around the bush is pretty much pointless. Which is why Snyder admitted that he had no idea how the Hurricanes got on the schedule. He later said he only liked to play home non-conference games – a sound philosophy considering the Cats barely won at North Texas last year and lost at both UCLA and UL-Lafayette in 2009. This year, Kansas State hasn't exactly been tested with games against Eastern Kentucky and Kent State. They also have their conference opener on deck (vs. Baylor).

Meanwhile Miami is in a bit of a tricky spot coming off a big win over Ohio State. No look-ahead to worry about however with a Read more

College Football ATS Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Boise State Broncos

CRIS Current Line: Boise State -28 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Boise State -22.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Boise State -27.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: I don't normally get involved with games lined at four touchdowns but I'm very intrigued by the line move in this weekend's Boise State-Tulsa game. Despite no official word, the market move towards the Golden Hurricane hints that quarterback GJ Kinne will indeed play – although I’ve read the team has been practicing as if he won’t. If I’m Tulsa, why even risk it with a full season of C-USA still left to be played? But the closer I looked at this game, the clearer it became that Kinne or no Kinne, Tulsa is going to be severely outclassed…again. Just look as Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Buckeyes go with true frosh QB Miller

09.22.2011     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Colorado at Ohio State -16.5 O/U 44.5

Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell announced that true freshman quarterback Braxton Miller will start Saturday’s game against Colorado. The Buckeyes went with senior Joe Bauserman their first three contests, but his 2-for-14, 13-yard performance against Miami (FL) gave the team little choice. Note that OSU will still be without the services of three starters. Following the announcement by Fickell, bettors bumped the Buckeyes up from -15 to -16.5. Jazz and Greek have the Buckeyes as 17-point favorites.

College Football Betting Notes: Ole Miss scales back playbook

09.22.2011     09:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Georgia -9.5 at Mississippi O/U 54.5

Heading into the season, it was Ole Miss' defense that was the main concern and while the stop unit hasn't been exactly stellar thus far it is the offense that has stolen the headlines. The Rebels rank 115th in total offense (236 ypg) through three games. According to head coach Houston Nutt, the team plans on scaling back the playbook and simplifying their approach. The betting markets don't seem to have a lot of confidence in the Rebels right now as Georgia is favored by nearly double-digits on the road.

"Coach Lee is saying we have too much (offense) in right now, but I don't think that's the case," Stoudt said. "There's a big difference between not understanding and not executing."

College Football ATS Notes: Bettors show love for underdog Nevada

09.22.2011     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Nevada at Texas Tech -17 O/U 63.5

Interesting matchup with Nevada traveling to Lubbock to face Texas Tech on Saturday. The Red Raiders have yet to be tested with games against FCS Texas State and bottom feeder New Mexico. Nevada will be a solid step up in class for a team that had trouble winning by margin last season. TTU's biggest victory against a legitimate foe was a 35-20 win over a Case Keenum-less Houston squad. In Week 2, Nevada racked up 516 yards against Oregon but were still blasted, 69-20. In last week's 17-14 win at San Jose State, the Wolf Pack put up 216 yards on the ground and owned advantages of 36-24 TOP and 23-15 first downs but committed four turnovers. We've seen a strong move towards the underdog in this matchup with Nevada bet down from a -20 opener to -17. Read more

NCAAF Gambling: Arizona State looks to snap 11-game losing streak to USC

09.22.2011     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
USC at Arizona State -2.5 O/U 54

The last time Arizona State beat USC head coaches Bruce Snyder and Paul Hackett were roaming the sidelines. The year? 1999. Since then, the Trojans have won 11 straight but enter this weekend as an underdog. Last year's meeting showed that the gap between the two programs has closed dramatically with USC (-5.5) kicking a game-winning field goal to win 34-33 in Los Angeles. The Sun Devils seems to have recovered from their 17-14 loss to Illinois but will down a key man with Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year Junior Onyeali (knee) out for at least six weeks. Onyeali is ASU’s fourth starter the be lost to injury.
