College Football Odds Preview: Michigan Wolverines at Northwestern Wildcats

Michigan at Northwestern +7.5 O/U 59.5

Despite Michigan’s massacre of Minnesota last week 58-0, the Wildcats are taking the money as home underdogs. Michigan is averaging over 290 rushing ypg at nearly 7.0 ypr led by dynamic quarterback Denard Robinson, who runs for 116 ypg and passes for 158 ypg. New head coach Brady Hoke has Big Blue back on course. So why are the 5-0 Wolverines not getting bettors’ money this week?  Michigan hits the road for the first time this season – 0-6 ATS their last six games as road favorites. Add in the fact that Dan Persa is back under center, Northwestern is playing for its season, and the motivation and situation points towards the home side as Michigan has state rival Michigan State on deck. Northwestern is on a 3-0 ATS run in the series and Michigan is 2-18-1 ATS from Game 6 forward the last three Read more

College Football Gambling: Virginia Tech looks to bounce back against Miami

Miami (FL) at -Virginia Tech -7 O/U 48

Hokies look to bounce back following last week’s embarrassing home loss to Clemson, 23-3. Enter “Beamer Ball”, as Virginia Tech is 6-0 ATS at home following a home loss under the long time head coach. Tech is also 5-0 ATS in its last five meetings against Miami, as well as 42-19 ATS in league games. I think the Hokies have the better of it along the line of scrimmage. Running back David Wilson ranks seventh in the nation in rushing (127 ypg) and is a speedster with 12 plays of 20 or more yards this season. Virginia Tech should bounce back and come strong with the superior defense vs. a Hurricane stop unit that allows 202 rushing ypg and 5.0 ypr.

NCAAF Handicapping Preview: Navy in a tough spot against Southern Miss

Southern Miss +1 at Navy O/U 58

You don’t see many letdowns from Service Academies, but after back-to-back late losses, including last week’s deflating 35-34 OT loss to Air Force, Navy may surrender in this tough match-up and emotional spot. Adding to the Midshipmen’s misfortune is their track record after battling Air Force (0-6 ATS). Also, overtime losers as home favorites the next time out are a poor proposition if they had scoring success the previous game. Southern Mississippi has won three straight and has the better offense and defense. They rank 11th in the nation against the run (82 ypg, 2.4 ypr ) and should be able to slow Navy’s option attack (352 rushing ypg). But Navy will be without leading rusher Alexander Teich for this game (disciplinary), while the Golden Eagles feature a Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Minnesota's Kill sounds off on program

Minnesota at Purdue -14 O/U 48

You have to feel sorry for Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill and it goes beyond just his health. Kill sounded off the other day about the current state of the program, all but saying former head coach Tim Brewster left the program in shambles. Kill said the talent level is minimal, the players are slow, and he spends more time dealing with outside issues (21 players academically ineligible) rather than coaching. He's also been forced to tap into the depth chart and play first-year players. Earlier this summer, Brewster said that Kill inherited a "very talented team" and later said the team's performance in the classroom was excellent. Similar to Read more

NCAAF Pointspread Notes: Boise State laying three touchdowns at Fresno

10.07.2011     09:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Boise State -20.5 at Fresno State O/U 58.5

One thing has been clearly established in the Fresno-Boise series of late – the Bulldogs don't fare well on the Smurf Turf (0-5 SU/ATS). At home though, Fresno has been much more competitive, never losing by more than 17 points. Boise still racked up pointspread covers in a majority of those matchups but the prices were considerably different. Two years ago, the Broncos closed -7.5 at Fresno whereas tonight's game is lined as high as three touchdowns.

Fresno State at Boise State
2010: 51-0 Loss (+28.5)
2008: 61-10 Loss (+21.5)
2006: 45-21 Loss (+21.5)
2004: 33-16 Loss (+8.5)
2002: 67-21 Loss (+7.5)

Fresno State vs. Boise State
2009: 51-34 Loss (+7.5)
2007: 34-21 Loss (+2.5)
2005: 27-7 Win (-9)
2003: 31-17 Loss (+9)
2001: 35-30 Loss (-16.5)

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini at Indiana Hoosiers

Illinois -14 at Indiana O/U 53
Recommendation: Illinois

Ron Zook and the Illini have done no wrong so far in 2011. Look no further than their 5-0 record. The best thing to happen to the program was the hiring of coordinators Paul Petrino and Vic Koenning. Last week was a perfect example as the Illini were able to make the proper adjustments and throw the football for almost 400 yards behind real deal sophomore quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers are hoping the recent hiring of first-year head coach Kevin Wilson will eventually yield similar results. If it happens though, it won’t be for a few years. Wilson inked a seven-year deal with the Hoosiers and is clearly playing for the future. He continues to insert freshman into the starting lineup which is great for the long term but does little to help them during Big Ten action. In fact, there's a clear battle being drawn between some of the players and Wilson. Six Hoosiers have actually left Read more

College Football Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates at Houston Cougars

East Carolina at Houston -11.5 O/U 73.5
Recommendation: Houston

East Carolina has been one of the biggest disappointments of the year offensively. With quarterback Dominique Davis, who threw for 37 touchdown passes and 3,967 yards a year ago, and five other starters back, the Pirates should be matching their 36.8 ppg from 2010. However, that has not been the case, as the Pirates have been careless with the ball and the production simply hasn’t been there. East Carolina has a whopping 17 turnovers in just four games, and has scored just 95 points in its 1-3 start. This week they travel to Houston to face one of the best offenses in the nation, led by quarterback Case Keenum. The Cougars have scored at least 35 points in all five of their games and have eclipsed 700 yards in each of their last two games. Houston's defense has some leaks, but they have also been forcing turnovers, with 11 takeaways on the year. East Carolina has allowed at least 42 points in Read more

NCAAF Betting Update: K-State players use pointspread for motivation

UPDATE

Missouri -4 at Kansas State O/U 55

Boy, K-State is really milking this underdog/pointspread thing. Earlier in the week it was Bill Snyder and now, even the players are getting into the act.

“We're ranked, but we're picked as underdogs against a 2-2 football team,” safety Tysyn Hartman said. “It happens. The guys who make those odds know what they're talking about. We haven't beat Missouri in five years.”

College Football Betting News: Sixth player in two weeks quits Indiana

Illinois -14 at Indiana O/U 53

Indiana football players are dropping like flies but it isn't because of injuries. Another player quit the team yesterday, marking the sixth in two weeks. First-year head coach Kevin Wilson didn't seem too worried about the exits, hinting that these types of defections are actually a good thing. The Hoosiers have 12 players currently listed as "out" due to suspension, personal reasons, or injury. Four of those 12 were projected starters heading into fall camp.

“(Turner) came in and said he didn’t want to play, and I thought that was a good choice because he hasn’t been practicing hard,’’ Wilson said. “He came in Read more

NCAAF Handicapping News: Bettors continue to pound Central Florida

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Marshall at Central Florida -19 O/U 43

After losing two straight losses to Florida International and BYU, Central Florida enjoyed an extra week of preparation before playing host to Marshall this Saturday. Interesting line move in this one as Marshall, off a road win over Louisville, opened as a 14.5-point underdog but now finds itself as high as +19.5. The Thundering Herd were +21.5 in a Week 1, rain-shortened game, at at West Virginia (34-13 final).

UCF head coach George O'Leary doesn't have much of a track record off of a bye: 3-10 SU at UCF and 12-17 SU overall. But his Knights have responded after a SU loss with a record of 7-1 ATS the last three seasons.
