College Football Betting: ACC loaded with returning quarterbacks

07.23.2012     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
The ACC is slated to return all but one starting quarterback this season. And the lone school without a returning starter, Miami, still has experience with Stephen Morris playing in 11 games. Those returning have combined for nearly 40,000 career passing yards.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Now or never for Dooley and Tennessee

07.23.2012     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley sure could use a winning campaign after going 11-14 overall and 4-12 in the SEC his first two years on the job. The Volunteers return as many as 17 starters including quarterback Tyler Bray. UT is +1050 to win the SEC East and is lined at 7ov-135 according to 5Dimes.

"It's kind of like that song — a little less conversation and a little more action," Dooley said. "So we have to go out and prove it, and that's what we intend to do this year."

"We haven't had the seasons Tennessee's had in the past, but we're going to try to change that," Bray said. "We have great leadership this year, a good offense and a good defense."

College Football Gambling: Bettors take notice of penalties towards Penn State

07.23.2012     06:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As you've already noticed, the amount of Penn State coverage in the Sportsmemo Blog and Posting Forum has been sparse. It’s not that we don’t care, but unless it is pointspread related, it often times isn’t worth discussing. But after Monday’s NCAA smackdown, bettors’ ears perked up because the play on the field is about to suffer in a big way and we're not just talking this season. The NCAA fined PSU $60 million (about a year's worth of football profit), banned them from the postseason for four year, took away scholarships, AND players may transfer to any school they choose and play immediately. Sportsmemo's Rob Veno thinks the potential transfers not only hurt Penn State but could bolster other teams.

It'll be interesting though to see the mass exodus of the current roster...if so, they'll be 17+ point underdogs for the next 10 years.

NCAAF Gambling: Sun Belt heavy on returning quarterbacks

07.20.2012     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly
Returning quarterbacks has been a popular subject among the Sun Belt’s preseason coverage. Nine of last year's 10 starters are back. The only team without a returning starter is FIU – perhaps it says something about the Sun Belt that despite a new signal caller, the Panthers are picked to win the league. Below is a list of who is back.

Nevada sportsbooks not offering odds on Olympic events

07.20.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What a crock. Nevada bettors will have to use their offshore accounts if they want to bet on the 2012 London Olympics. The Nevada Gaming Control Board considers the Olympics to be an amateur event and sportsbooks are not allowed to accept bets. Yet, after taking all but 3.4 seconds to ponder that concept, aren't college football and basketball amateur sports (outside of the SEC)?

Vegas sportsbooks may change football parlay cards

07.19.2012     12:45 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some Las Vegas sportsbooks are considering making adjustments to their football parlay cards.

“We are going to review the pay charts, but one thing I will tell you for sure is we’re not going to be offering the entire bowl schedule on the cards weeks before the games are played, but rather only the games that are played that week,“ said Osborne.

NCAAF Gambling: Mississippi State names Russell starting QB

07.19.2012     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Normally, we don't get that excited when a team announces their starting quarterback in mid-July. But said team happens to Mississippi State who has built a strong reputation of not being able to throw the football. The good news is things have improved since head coach Dan Mullen took over in 2009. Mullen named junior Tyler Russell his Week 1 starter. Russell made a few starts last season and finished with 1,034 yards, 8 TDs and 4 INTs. He'll have plenty of opportunity for success early on with games against Jackson State, Auburn (worst pass defense in the SEC last season), Troy, and South Alabama.

MSU QB Rating Ranking in SEC
2011- 9th 124.15
2010 - 7th 139.25
2009 - 10th 110.16
2008 - 8th 102.54

College Football Handicapping: Touchbacks to be placed at 25-yard line

07.19.2012     10:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College football has a few rule changes that bettors should be aware about. For starters, kickoffs have been moved from the 30 to 35-yard line. Second, touchbacks will be placed at the 25 instead of the 20. The NFL made similar changes last year and the average starting field position was nearly five yards less than 2010. Here is some commentary of how the rule changes could impact college football.

With regards to strategy go ahead and call me a kook because if I'm the head coach or special teams coordinator I'm not going for the touchback. The 25 yardline is five more yards than I want to give up for free and moving the kickoff to the 35 is five less yards my guys have to run. We're looking at a 65 yard coverage zone with a five yard head start. A 40 yard sky kick with a fair catch gets you to that same 25. A longer sky kick, fielded by a fullback or a linebacker in the game to block gets

Polls, schmolls. Just give me a side and a total and let me handicap

07.18.2012     01:05 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In my world, college football polls are pretty much meaningless. Just tell me the matchup, maybe an injury report, hang a side and total and let me work. Oddsmakers and bettors are without question more knowledgeable about what goes in in the world of college football compared to say, Chris Berman. But when asked to rank the top five teams in the country, I simply couldn’t do it – in part because I don't care. Sure, some of us use "power ratings" as a way of judging teams, but again, for much of the season, we deal with situation where one teams is "good" and the other team is "bad" and the betting markets determine the gap. So the question came up, should our industry get involved in determining who gets a bid into the newly formatted college football playoff system? The short answer is no, because I don’t have the time nor the desire to do anything but try cash tickets.

“That’s not what we do,” said Pete Korner, owner and head oddsmaker for The Sports
