Northern Illinois vs. Kent State
Friday, 4 pm PT, Detroit - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Northern Illinois -5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Northern Illinois -6 O/U 58
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Kent State pk

The MAC Championship returns to the fast track at Ford Field this week for what should be an exciting game. Both Kent State (East Division winner) and Northern Illinois (West Division winner) have been on fire this year; both teams are 11-1 SU and both have been a bettor’s dream going a combined 19-4 ATS. So what got these teams here and who can we expect to hoist the trophy at the end of the day?

The secret to the success of NIU and Kent State is simple really; they play solid defense and they employ dominating ground attacks. Looking at the individual teams we see a number of key factors that have sparked this winning formula. For the Huskies, they finished second in scoring defense and third in total Read more

College Football Gambling: Notre Dame an underdog in virtually every BCS scenario

11.27.2012     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to one report, Notre Dame would be an underdog to five of the six SEC teams currently ranked in the BCS top 10.

“Sporting News asked Kenny White, longtime oddsmaker in Las Vegas and one of The Linemakers on Sporting News for betting lines on potential games between the Irish and the six SEC teams ranked in the top 10 of the current BCS poll,” Hayes said. “Of those six teams, Notre Dame would be favored to win one game: against No. 10 South Carolina by 1 point.”

College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Louisville at Rutgers
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - ESPN

CRIS Opener: Rutgers -2.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: Rutgers -3 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Rutgers -3.5

The de facto Big East Championship takes place on Thursday with Louisville traveling to Rutgers. The winner of the game earns an automatic BCS bowl berth.

Louisville is about to play its 12th game of the season and at no point have I felt this team was of 9-2 “quality.” Defensively is where the Cardinals have repeatedly fallen short. The overall season numbers aren't far removed for 2011 but a quick dig shows the stop unit has without question regressed. In conference play, the Cardinals have allowed nearly 200 ypg on the ground – 75 ypg more than last season. And we’re not talking about a host of run-dominant teams with half the league averaging less than 140 ypg. I'm simply amazed that Louisville is 9-2 Read more

College Football Betting Trends: Defense has been the key to C-USA Championship

11.26.2012     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
Central Florida at Tulsa pk

Over the last five years there has been a consistent trend when it comes to the C-USA Championship: The better defense wins and covers. That’s right, the team with the better total defense in conference play has emerged victorious both straight up and against the spread five straight times (three as an underdog). Those five winners all came from the East Division whereas this year’s matchup – according to our trend – favors the West’s Tulsa. In conference play, Tulsa allowed 336.1 ypg good for second while UCF ranked 5th (388.9 ypg). The two squads met two weeks ago on this same field with Tulsa winning 23-21 as a 1-point favorite. The Golden Hurricane outgained the Knights 461-235 including 209-66 on the ground.

College Football Handicapping: Conference championship early line moves

11.26.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a quick look at the early lines moves for this weekend's college football conference championships.

Big East - Louisville at Rutgers (Thursday)
After both teams lost last weekend, Thursday's matchups becomes the de facto title game. Rutgers opened -2.5 but was quickly bet up to -3 across the board.

MAC - Northern Illinois vs. Kent State (Friday at Detroit)
No regular season meeting as both teams finished unblemished in league play. Combined the two squads were 20-4 against the spread. Interesting to see if the market pushes this game off the dead number of 5. CRIS opened NIU -5 but a small move towards Kent bumped it down to -4.5. The rest of the market has held firm at -5.

PAC-12 - UCLA at Stanford (Friday)
Both teams met last week as Stanford jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 35-17 victory. Note that the Bruins had already wrapped up the PAC-12 South prior to the contest – and are probably happy to be facing the Cardinal as oppose to Oregon. Stanford appears to be much improved since the move to quarterback Kevin Hogan who in four games has connected on 73% of Read more

College Footballl Gambling: Notre Dame earned BCS title berth, awaits opponent

11.26.2012     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From unranked in the preseason to a berth in the BCS National Championship, Notre Dame closed out its perfect regular season on Saturday with a win at USC. Up next for the Irish is an opponent. It is likely to be the winner of Saturday's SEC Championship between Alabama and Georgia. Early indications have the Irish as a 9.5-point underdog – assuming they face the Crimson Tide. In late October, Notre Dame was a 10.5-point underdog at Oklahoma and won outright, 30-13.

Danny Sheridan claims Alabama is the mecca of illegal sports betting

11.23.2012     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Your laugh of the day: Danny Sheridan talking gibberish about the Iron Bowl and sports betting in Alabama.

“Right now, if I were picking the game, I would probably pick Auburn,” Sheridan said Wednesday afternoon. That’s Auburn to win the point spread, not the game, mind you.

“They’d win only one out of 1,000 times,” he said.

“Alabama per capita is the largest illegal sports betting state in the country,” Sheridan said. “If I meet an illegal bookmaker in New York, they say, ‘man, I wish people bet here like they did in Alabama.’”

“This is the highest line I can ever remember in the Alabama-Auburn game,” Sheridan said, noting the point spread wasn’t this high even in 1958, when Auburn won the national championship

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Florida State Seminoles

Florida at Florida State
Ian Cameron's Recommendation:
Florida State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -8
CRIS Current: Florida State -8.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -5.5

The Florida Gators have put together a strong season and are still hanging by a thread in the BCS Championship hunt – they need A LOT to go their way to have a shot. They do however appear to be running out of gas and coupled with some key injuries, are not in the best of situations for their rivalry tilt against Florida State.

The numbers certainly back up my theory on Florida’s regression. It all started when they suffered their first loss of the season against Georgia, 17-9. It was a turnover plagued, lethargic performance and the Gators have yet to truly rebound. Since then, they squeaked out a pair of seven-point home wins against Missouri and UL-Lafayette. It took Read more
