College Football Odds: Navy likely to start back-up QB against Notre Dame

10.25.2011     11:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Navy at Notre Dame -20.5 O/U 62

Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor (elbow) appears doubtful for Saturday's game at Notre Dame. If he doesn’t go, sophomore Trey Miller will get the starting nod. Miller has had limited playing time in four games this season: 38 yards rushing (4.75 ypc) and 7-of-14, 172 yards, 2 TDs passing. He looked shaky after replacing Proctor in last week's 38-35 loss to East Carolina. The Midshipmen ditched the no-huddle and a lot of their triple-option plays with Miller under center though the coaching staff says everything will be in play for Saturday. As for Notre Dame, the Irish limp in after last week's 31-17 loss to USC. The media has a field day when a few USC players openly said that Read more

NCAAF Gambling News: Virginia Tech loses defensive leader to injury

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech -15.5 at Duke O/U 53.5

Virginia Tech lost its fourth defensive starter to a season-ending injury. Leading tackler Bruce Taylor hurt his foot in last week's win over Boston College and will need surgery. Tech has typically been able to plug-and-play when it comes to its stop unit but Taylor not only led the team in tackles (53), ranked third in tackles for loss (7), and second in sacks (5) but also called plays for the defense.

“It is a tough loss,” coach Frank Beamer said on Monday. “He’s played a lot of plays and made a lot of plays. He’s a very smart guy and gets us into the right things.”

NCAA Betting Notes: Tennessee to start true frosh QB against South Carolina

South Carolina -4 at Tennessee O/U 43.5

DEFCON 1 alert is officially underway in Knoxville as Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley decided to not only yank the redshirt tag off of true freshman Justin Worley, but to start him this weekend against the seventh-ranked defense in the country. With Tyler Bray out for the immediate future, the Vols turned to back-up and former starter Matt Simms last week against Alabama. Simms didn't do much, finishing 8-of-17 for 58 yards and an INT…albeit against the best defense in the country. As for the Gamecocks, they'll be without the services of running back Marcus Lattimore who tore his ACL two weeks ago against Mississippi State. Freshman Shon Carson is also out with a knee injury leaving freshman Brandon Wilds as the probable starter.

College Football Handicapping: Change in philosophy yields positive results for UTEP

10.25.2011     08:17 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Their offense may not be as lopsided as one of the Service Academies or Georgia Tech’s, but there’s been a dramatic philosophy change in El Paso, Texas. Although still operating out of a spread formation with four wideouts most of the time, UTEP has firmly committed to running the football over the past three games. Senior running back Joe Banyard began the newly found production source against Houston back on October 1st when he led the Miners with 240 yards rushing on 22 attempts (10.9 ypc) in the near upset. Following their bye week, fellow senior running backs Vernon Frazier and Leilyon Myers joined in as the trio combine for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries (7.1 ypc) against Tulane. And this past Saturday, Frazier led the way with 167 yards on just seven carries (23.9 ypc), one of which was an 83-yard touchdown scamper. There are a multitude of teams across the country that find it difficult to run out of the “spread” and for UTEP to change its ways so drastically in the middle of the season and show such potent results is a credit to the players and coaching staff. Granted, the schedule has featured below average run defenses and the test Read more

Oddsmaker reacts to top ranked, chalk covering bonanza

10.25.2011     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mirage oddsmaker Jeff Stonebeck comments on the season-long trend of top ranked teams covering pointspreads...with ease. As mentioned in yesterday's blog, the AP's top 10 is currently 56-16-1 ATS on the year.

"Stanford's our big nemesis this year," says Jeff Stoneback, sportsbook manager at the Mirage in Las Vegas. "It's been a really tough year for us as far as the top 10 teams covering every week. Players are coming in and blindly betting the top-ranked teams, and these teams are blowing everybody out."

"If they had covered the spread, it would have been a horrendous day for all the books in Nevada," said Stoneback. "You get all these parlays (including the elite teams). It's not good for us at all."

College Football Betting News: Pitt adjusts line-up, tries to solve o-line woes

10.25.2011     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Connecticut at Pittsburgh O/U 42.5

Injuries have forced Pittsburgh to make a couple of line-up adjustments. Starting safety Jason Hendricks was lost for the year, starting offensive lineman Lucas Nix (knee) was upgraded to probable and starting linebacker Todd Thomas returns after missing four games.

The biggest problem for the Panthers has been the play of the offensive line. Head coach Todd Graham has shuffled around the starting five countless times in hopes of find something that works. The unit has allowed a startling 33 sacks in only seven games – 10 more than all of last year. Their struggles are also connected to the downfall of quarterback Tino Sunseri. After posting a quarterback rating of 136.6 last season, Sunseri sports a dismal 5-to-7 TD-to-INT ratio and has been benched multiple times. Difficult to back a team who can't keep their quarterback Read more

A behind-the-counter look at Las Vegas sportsbooks during football season

10.24.2011     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on some of the swings sportsbooks endure during a typical football weekend. One game in particular that helped the books was San Francisco's parlay crushing victory over Detroit two weeks ago.

“I can’t pinpoint what I do or how I do it. I don’t think anyone can. You can see what’s coming sometimes with the help of experience, feel. You just put the house in the best position to minimize your risk. You’ve got to have luck, too. We’re in the gaming business. The good news is we’ll have another set of games next week.”

“They don’t care what the spreads are. They’re just betting them because the teams are covering the spreads,” Rood said.
