Teddy Covers offers his opinion on the Hawaii point shaving allegations

11.23.2011     11:07 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

UPDATE

I just did some research on this story.  Not to say that it didn't happen, but some “facts” in the Covers piece tonight are false.  Wynn's lines don't count as opening numbers – they take opinions, they open first, their limits are low, and they are not market numbers.

CRIS opened -4, closed -3.5…the number bounced back and forth between 3.5 and 4 all week.

I also watched the game – the whole game – and if that game was “fixed” in any way, I sure as hell didn't see it.

It's worth noting that in most point shaving scenarios we see the favorite win but not cover...the classic “nobody gets hurt, we make money” scenario; an easy sell for kids who don't have any “walking around” money in their pockets.  Hawaii is 2-6 ATS as favorites this year, but they've been LOSING those games in SU fashion (four times) – very, very atypical of what we would expect to see from a pointshaving situation.

College Football Betting Notes: Five-win Vanderbilt favored at Wake Forest

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt -1.5 at Wake Forest O/U 49.5

Interesting situation with Vanderbilt (5-6) vying for a bowl berth but favored on the road following a disheartening overtime loss to in-state rival Tennessee. Wake Forest has already hit the six-win plateau but claims this week's game is just as important as any other. The Demon Deacons won last year's meeting in Nashville, 34-13.

"Nobody likes to lose, especially the way that we did," defensive tackle Rob Lohr said. "We have to bounce back, get it back this week and make it to a bowl game. It's definitely a one-game season. We have to be ready."

“That’s the thing we can’t do (is act relieved to get to Read more

College Football Gambling: Virginia Tech and Virginia battle for ACC Coastal Division

Virginia Tech -4.5 at Virginia O/U 45.5

Winner-take-all this weekend in Charlottesville with Virginia Tech and Virginia battling for the ACC Coastal Division. The Cavaliers have won and covered four of their last five including last week's 14-13 upset at Florida State. According to Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, UVA's success this season is for real and should be respected. The series has been all Tech with wins in each of the last seven meetings (6-1 ATS).

“They’re just not where they are because they’ve got a horseshoe up their butt,” he said Tuesday. “They’ve earned it. We respect Read more

Anonymous letter triggers point shaving allegations at Hawaii, police not buying it

11.23.2011     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There seems to be a trend developing in college sports that when a team stinks against the spread, someone takes to their keyboard and claims that some sort of point shaving is involved. Remember when some goofball decided to write that Syracuse basketball was dirty after a 7-13 ATS start to the 2010? Since then and including this season, the Orange is 11-5 ATS and no one has heard a peep. San Diego's point shaving appears a little more serious as the authorities got involved, yet nothing concrete has surfaced and oddsmakers failed to notice any irregular betting patterns. And then there was party boy Stephen Garcia who finally wore out his welcome in Columbia and was booted off the team. Another situation where someone with internet access felt Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Heavy rains expected for Miami (OH) vs. Ohio

11.22.2011     01:49 PM     Printer Friendly
Miami (OH) at Ohio -9 O/U 55

A rivalry that is likely to get damp with heavy rains expected for tonight's Miami (OH) at Ohio game. Temperatures however are expected to be balmy.

From a run-game perspective, the Bobcats hold a significant edge on offense with 209.6 ypg, 4.76 ypc averages against MAC foes. Miami meanwhile has the worst rushing offense in the league at 73.0 ypg and 2.3 ypc.

The RedHawks make up for it somewhat with a small 131.3 ypg to 140.1 ypg rush defense advantage.

CRIS opened the game Ohio -6.5.

NCAAF Pointspread Preview: Louisville Cardinals vs. South Florida Bulls

Louisville at South Florida (Friday, 8 am PT - ESPN2)
CRIS Opener: South Florida -3 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 (-115) O.U 43.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: South Florida -6

We have two teams here that have been heading in opposite directions for the better part of two months now. USF has been a train wreck since late September, losers of five of its last six games overall. They’ve covered just one spread in their last seven contests and were favored in each game. Louisville meanwhile has morphed into a solid bunch under head coach Charlie Strong with wins in four of its last five games and ATS victories in six of seven.

The Bulls can attribute this lack of production to a number of issues including, but not limited to, injuries to various key offensive personnel. The receiving corps in particular has been hit hard with the loss of leading Read more

Backyard Brawl Gambling: West Virginia and Pitt try to stay in Big East race

11.22.2011     09:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh at West Virginia -6.5 O/U 57

The Backyard Brawl rivalry commences this weekend in Morgantown with West Virginia playing host to Pittsburgh. Perhaps some bad blood between the two head coaches as Dana Holgorsen accused (and supposedly caught) then Tulsa coach Todd Graham of having his player fake injuries to slow down the Cougars' offense during a 2009 game.

Both teams come in off of bye weeks and are 3-2 in Big East play with two games remaining. Louisville and Rutgers are 4-2 but close out the regular season on the road.

"Yeah, they were cheating," Holgorsen told radio station KGOW-AM in Houston. "We've got some inside information on how they did it."

"It goes back to the coaching thing," Holgorsen said. "There is always a tremendous amount of respect when it comes to coaching Read more

College Football Gambling: Monte Kiffin didn't agree with oddsmakers prior to Oregon game

11.22.2011     07:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you were to guess a coach who follows the pointspread and uses it to motivate his team, USC's Lane Kiffin (correction, it was actuallly his dad, Monte) would probably be one of your first few choices. Monte checked out the line prior to last Saturday's game against Oregon and was shocked – he claimed +19, though offshore the game opened +14/+15, peaked +17, and closed +15. Wonder what Kiffin thinks about the -14.5 his Trojans are laying against rival UCLA on Saturday?

"On Monday, I was checking the point spread," Kiffin said Monday on the Mason & Ireland Show on 710 ESPN radio. "I loved it. I put it on the first time we met, Tuesday morning, with the defense and I said, '19-point underdog? Are you kidding me?' We were eight-and-a-half point [underdogs] at Notre Dame and we thought that was a lot.

"Bring it on, baby. I love it."

Fairway Jay: College Basketball betting and pointspread results

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We entered the week 8-2 in college basketball with a slew of tournaments upcoming this holiday weekend. Despite a fairly conservative approach, I can tell you with confidence that early season basketball is one of the best times of the year to be taking advantage of the betting lines and producing profit if you’ve done your homework and prepared your plan of attack.

So two weeks into the college basketball season and I thought I would update you on how the oddsmaker is doing in college basketball results in relation to the pointspread. This should further prove how early season college basketball can be so profitable if you’re prepared and have a plan to produce profit.

I spend many hours logging and tracking scores, stats and lines. After suffering a very unfortunate 1-point ATS loss with Long Beach State Saturday in its 71-67 overtime loss to San Diego State, I can tell you from by personal data that approximately 8-12% of college basketball games will fall within one point of the betting line. Two seasons ago just over 11% of the games fell within one point of the betting line (out of nearly 2,400 games before the late season conference Read more
