Handicapper Game Preview: Mississippi State Bulldogs at Georgia Bulldogs

Mississippi State at Georgia (9 am PT – FSN)
CRIS Opening Line: Georgia -7.5 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current Line: Georgia -7 O/U 53.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Georgia -4.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Georgia -6.5

Brent Crow’s Betting Take: There has been quite a shift in the perception of Mississippi State since it lost as a road favorite at Auburn. They followed it with another loss at home against LSU and then struggled last week at home against Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs needed overtime to win against Tech and were outgained in the process (359-340). Offensive line injuries have hampered the Mississippi State offense, which played very well in their first two games against Memphis and Auburn. In its last two games, State posted just two offensive touchdowns and 276 ypg. Georgia dropped its two opening games to Read more

College Football ATS Preview: Cincinnati owns series over Miami-Ohio

09.29.2011     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Cincinnati -14.5 at Miami (OH) O/U 56.5

The rivalry between Cincinnati and Miami (OH) has been extremely lopsided over the last five years with the Bearcats winning five straight (4-1 ATS) by an average of over four touchdowns. Last year's meeting was a complete bloodbath with Cinci putting up 45 points – in the first half!

The Bearcats come in on extra rest after demolishing NC State 44-14 last Thursday. They also have an upcoming bye week which means despite the series dominance, they should be focused. Desperate for a win, Miami (0-3 SU) will certainly want to atone for last year's poor showing. There are some injury concerns though.

Former Nebraska players seek action on game vs. Wisconsin

Nebraska at Wisconsin -9 O/U 57

A couple of ex-Nebraska football players getting "involved" in Saturday's showdown in Madison.

"I told him I would, but Nebraska's defense has given up way too many points," Octavien said. "I told him there was no way I was betting on that one with that quarterback they have over there.

"He's really confident, as he should be," said Moore, who played for Nebraska from 2002 through 2006. "I told him I'd bet the Huskers and the spread.

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: Texas A&M Aggies vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (at Dallas, 9 am PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: Texas A&M -3.5 O/U 59.5
CRIS Current Line: Texas A&M -2.5 O/U 62
Rob Veno Power Rating: Texas A&M -1
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Arkansas -3

Marty Otto's Betting Take: Wow, what a complete meltdown from the Aggies last week. Mike Sherman’s team circled the matchup as the statement game of the season, a real revenge spot and a coming out party for what he expected to be a conference championship season. Instead they blew a big halftime lead and suffered their third straight disheartening loss to the Cowboys.
Turnovers, bad defense and general malaise seemed to set in during the third quarter. Is this team just allergic to success? By the time they woke up it was too late.

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Bettors fade Boston College despite Harris' return

09.28.2011     01:46 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Wake Forest -2.5 at Boston College O/U 49

Boston College head coach Steve Spaziani hinted that running back Montel Harris' workload would increase after he made his season debut in last week's win over UMass.

Teddy Covers noted that his power ratings had Wake Forest -5 which suggests that oddsmakers were perhaps giving too much credit for Harris' return. The betting markets though feel that Harris will not be a factor as the line has steadily crept Wake's way. Of course there is also the possibility that bettors simply don’t trust the Eagles to beat a BCS foe without or without a healthy Harris which at this point is a fairly logical stance.

"He obviously was very limited going into last week and was limited there," Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Wisconsin Badgers

Nebraska at Wisconsin (5 pm – ABC)
CRIS Opening Line: Wisconsin -8 O/U 57.5
CRIS Current Line: Wisconsin -9.5 O/U 57
Rob Veno Power Rating: Wisconsin -11
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Wisconsin -11.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: This is a prime example of how much the perception of college football teams can change through the course of a season – and in this case a little over three months. Back in mid-June, the Golden Nugget released its Game of the Year lines and priced Wisconsin as a 2.5-point favorite. A week later, Russell Wilson decided to take his act to Madison and UW’s stock was immediately on the rise. Once the season started, Wilson unquestionably looked the part, Wisconsin was in constant name-the-score mode, and oddsmakers could have hung a -14 on this game and I wouldn’t have been Read more

College Football Odds: Texas A&M and Arkansas face off after tough outings

09.28.2011     12:11 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Texas A&M -2.5 vs. Arkansas O/U 62

Two teams that expended a lot of effort and energy last week hook up in Dallas with Arkansas and Texas A&M continuing their yearly series. The Razorbacks lost at Alabama, 38-14, and while perhaps somewhat discouraged by the performance, they knew ahead of time that winning in Tuscaloosa would be a tall order. The Aggies, meanwhile, had their game against Oklahoma State circled and it was supposed to serve as a springboard to a special season in College Station. But not only did A&M get beat, they did so by blowing a 20-3 lead. Everyone is saying the right things regarding a bounce-back effort but it wouldn't shock us to see the Aggies come out a bit sluggish in this one.

"I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like that in my entire coaching career," Texas Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Weis says Florida offense will pull out all the stops

09.28.2011     08:37 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Alabama -3.5 at Florida O/U 45.5

After weeks of playing coy with the media in terms of opening the playbook, Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said he'll be pulling out all of the stops against Alabama this weekend.

"Sometimes when you're playing football, you have to realize that punting isn't necessarily a bad thing," Weis said. "We want to score a touchdown every time we get the ball. But you want to make sure you make good decisions where you don't make that critical mistake and give one to them.

"You play fundamental football and you have to go ahead and throw the kitchen sink at them. They're going to get the kitchen sink.

"You guys have been writing about holding things back. Well, you won't have to worry about that this week. They're going to get plenty."

College Football ATS Notes: Northwestern-Illinois stoke rivalry fire

09.28.2011     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Northwestern at Illinois -8 O/U 50

The battle for the Land of Lincoln Trophy isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think about heated rivalries. In fact, up until 10 minutes ago, we were unaware this little get together even had a name (they played for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk from 1945-2008). Anyway, the good news is that there has been some chirping from both sides over the past week. Last season, Northwestern made a big marketing push as "Chicago's Big Ten Team". But after getting waxed by Illinois, in Chicago, it was the Illini that made it clear who "owned" the town. Then there was Northwestern saying that it didn’t recruit “the type of kids” than end up going to Illinois. The Illini of course took it as a sign of disrespect – in reality, it was actually a pretty accurate observation. Read more
