Passing game a focus for Vanderbilt this weekend

11.09.2010     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
Vanderbilt at Kentucky -14 O/U 54

With no viable options at running back due to injuries, Vanderbilt has come out and said that it plans to throw the football much more than usual against Kentucky this weekend. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much success in the passing game as the Commodores have totaled just 466 passing yards in six SEC games. UK's pass defense shows some decent numbers (165.4 ypg allowed) but that has more to do with the fact that opposing teams have been able to run the ball at will (196.5 ypg allowed SEC play). Not to mention, despite how bad Vanderbilt has played, we can't recommend laying two touchdowns with a horrible Kentucky defense that makes it tough to separate from opponents. Also keep in mind that the Cats haven't been favored by more than 3.5 over Vanderbilt dating back to 2003.

"May have to (pass)," Coach Robbie Caldwell said. "When you don't Read more

Betting College Football: Early Week Line Move Analysis

11.09.2010     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Each week here in the Sportsmemo Blog we will take a look at all of the significant early line moves in college football. See chart below for game listings.

The betting market has been fairly active in fading Bowling Green this season but the Falcons have earned most of the money for Wednesday's contest against Miami (OH). The RedHawks are the better team but do not have a lot of experience laying more than a field goal on the road (twice since 2006).

What have you done for me lately? Following its home loss to Mississippi State, Florida wasn't exactly overflowing with betting interest but a dramatic win over Georgia and then a road thrashing at Vanderbilt resulted in the market pushing the Gators up to as high as 7-point favorites for Saturday's SEC "East" Championship. Value bettors then took out all the 7's as Florida now sits -6.5 across the board.

On initial glance, Army as a 3.5-point road favorite over Kent State was simply a bad line. After taking out the 3.5's on Sunday night, a Read more

Improved play leads to odds adjustment for Florida Gators

11.09.2010     06:25 AM     Printer Friendly
South Carolina at Florida -6.5 O/U 51

Small preview on what's at stake for this weekend's South Carolina at Florida matchup. The winner earns a ticket to the SEC Championship. Florida coach Steve Spurrier did his best handicapper impression by acknowledging his team's underdog status – "huge" is a little strong there Steve. Florida's stock sure has risen after beating Georgia and then hammering Vanderbilt on the road while USC laid an egg at home last week against Arkansas. If this game was played two weeks ago, you could make the argument that the Gators would be a 3-point favorite, if not smaller.

"We've both had our ups and downs," Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said. "Florida seems to be peaking at this time, and we seem to be headed the other way.

"I realize we'll be huge underdogs, the way Read more

Football Handicapping: Bye Week Breakdown

11.08.2010     09:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a list of college and pro football teams who enter in off a bye week. Late season bye weeks can be especially beneficial for college teams who need to shore up injuries.

College
Mississippi State
(+13.5) at Alabama - Fifth straight SEC opponent to face Alabama off a bye week. MSU has scored just 10 points in the last two meetings.

Ohio State (-17.5) vs. Penn State - Buckeyes one of four Big Ten teams with one conference loss. OSU travels to Iowa next weekend, with the winner remaining in the title hunt.

Pittsburgh (-6) at UConn - Thursday game. Pitt (3-0) owns a two game lead on the rest of the Big East. Panthers were down 21-6 late in the third quarter and came back to beat Huskies 24-21.

UConn (+6) vs. Pittsburgh - Thursday game. Huskies 19-4 SU at home last four years.

West Virginia (-6) vs. Cincinnati - Mountaineers all but out of Big East race after five-point loss to Read more

Football Betting: Recapping the big market moves

11.08.2010     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Each week here in the Sportsmemo Blog we will go back and analyze last weekend's big market moves and their impact on bettors. See chart below for game listings.

After three straight tough games (at San Diego State, at TCU, vs. Utah) the market was anticipating a potential flat spot for Air Force who traveled all the way across the country to face up and coming Army. The Black Knights hung around for a while but two costly turnovers led to an easy Falcons victory.

No team has been more frustrating to back than the Clemson Tigers. Even in victory, this team finds a way to miss out on a spread cover despite laying a short price.

Four first half interceptions was too much to overcome for Wake Forest as Boston College won its second straight after five straight losses.

Not surprising to see bettors try and fade New Mexico State off a rare victory. The only problem was that Utah State had been crushed by injuries and simply didn't have the man power to win by a margin.

Second half kickoff list

That will wrap it up boys and girls. Didn't get the winning day we were searching for with the halftimes. Be back at next week. Thanks for following Les Miles

(2:24 PT) Kansas first three quarters = 17 points. Kansas fourth quarter = 35 points. KU comes back to win 52-45 (down 35-10 at half!) Jayhawks may of saved their Turner Gills' job while Colorado for certain got Hawkins canned not that it wasn't going to happen anyway.

Football Handicapping: Late week line moves

11.05.2010     12:19 PM     Printer Friendly
A couple of significant line moves over the back half of the week worth mentioning.

Tonight’s Western Michigan at Central Michigan contest sat at CMU -3.5 for much of the week until today, when enough action came in on the Broncos to push the line down to the key number of -3. The total saw some small movement upward (51 to 52.5).

South Carolina opened as a 3-point favorite over Arkansas. Early in the week, there was two-way action as the line bounced back and forth between -3 and -3.5. On Tuesday, however, there was a considerable push on the Gamecock side as -4 became the prevailing market number. Current line is now -4.5 with a couple market indicators showing that we could see -5 shortly.

East Carolina opened as a 3-point favorite over Navy and it stayed that way until late last night/early today when various shops got enough action on the Midshipmen that they bumped the line down to -2.5 Those interested in playing this contest should be able to find key numbers (+3/-2.5) on Read more

College football margin of victory under debate

11.05.2010     10:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting article that discusses the pros and cons of using/not using margin of victory in the BCS computer ratings. Various conference commissioners associated with the BCS want to completely remove margin of victory from the equation, stating the running up the score in order to look more impressive isn't as important as sportsmanship. On the flip side, Jeff Sagarin, whose ratings – margin included – are equated into the current BCS formula, argues that his numbers do a good job of not overrating teams that rack up big wins against weaker competition nor underrating teams than slip past tougher foes.

“When you’re locked into playing a lower schedule like Boise State is, and you’re in a win-loss system (with no scores), you can’t escape the balance of your schedule,” Sagarin said. “You’re automatically pulled down but you can’t Read more
