Betting Preview: Syracuse Orange at USF Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse at USF
Recommendation: Under 22 first half
Saturday, 9 am PT

With BJ Daniels at quarterback, the USF passing game has been stalled for much of the year. And from reading a couple of quotes, it is easy to see that the Bulls should continue to play conservative with the ball.  Prior to their game against Florida Atlantic, when asked about the Owls’ passing game, head coach Skip Holtz candidly said, "we may not throw for 262 yards all year". This after Daniels attempted only 11 passes for 57 yards in an unimpressive 24-14 win over Western Kentucky.

Following the Florida Atlantic game, offensive coordinator Todd Fitch said the initial game plan was to have Daniels throw the ball "around thirty times". That didn't even come close to happening as Read more

Nebraska at Kansas State
Recommendation: Under 25.5 first half
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT – ESPN

Both Nebraska and Kansas State come in off bye weeks for this Thursday night Big XII showdown in Manhattan. For a second straight season, Nebraska’s defense is one of the nation’s best. Washington and Idaho were at times able to move the football but neither posted 300 yards and both games need to be put into context as Nebraska played with sizable leads. Now that conference play has started, games mean more, play calling gets more conservative, and there are less lopsided scores. Last season, the highest game score in Big XII play for the Cornhuskers was 48 points against the inept defenses of Colorado and Kansas. The Cornhuskers look to have much more scoring ability this season but in this particular contest, they’ll be facing a capable Kansas State defense that on paper has enough quality bodies to keep Nebraska from running wild.

I expect Bill Snyder’s team to Read more

Penn State offense may use Wildcat package

Illinois at Penn State -7.5 O/U 42

In attempt to spark the offense, Penn State claims it may use "Wildcat" quarterback Kevin Newsome at times during this weekend's game against Illinois. Though after reading what head coach Joe Peterno had to say about the potential move, it doesn't look to be a high priority. The Nittany Lions rank 75th nationally with 355.2 ypg of total offense.

"We discussed that," Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno said Tuesday. "But Kevin's got to spend a little more time doing his homework. Right now, he's gotten by with his athletic ability."

"But I think there is a place for him," Paterno said. "Maybe we have to use him a little bit more. I don't know."

"But you hate to take Bolden out," Paterno said. "You start putting Newsome in there, the other kid starts looking Read more

UCF cancels classes; Students may have a few beers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A college education can be a wonderful thing but let's be honest, going to class can be a major drag. Students at UCF won't feel guilty about skipping class today because the school has canceled all afternoon classes in preparation for tonight's game against UAB. A logical move considering six hours to hammer beers is much more appealing that say two hours. Unfortunately, not everyone is onboard with the decision, and as expected, the complaints didn't come from the student body. And for the dude who said "it's not really for beer", get some friends man.

"It makes you wonder if our purpose here as a university is to educate students, or is our purpose to run a minor-league football team?" finance professor Jim Gilkeson said in a telephone interview.

"It's not really just for beer," another student said. "It's Read more

Colorado committed to run game against Missouri

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado at Missouri -12.5 O/U 52

Over the last three meetings between Colorado and Missouri, the Tigers have done two things extremely well; run the football and stop the run. Those two advantages led to wins of 36-17, 58-0 and 55-10. In those three contests, Missouri averaged 180.6 ypg and held Colorado to 111 yards on 91 carries (1.2 ypc). But the Buffaloes have made it a point to establish the run game this year with back-to-back 200+ yard performances against Hawaii and Georgia. Heading into this weekend's matchup, Colorado feels as if they can finally have success running the ball against the Tigers.

"It`s always nice when you have a game plan to actually come out and follow the game plan," Miller said after the Buffs piled up 252 net yards rushing against the Warriors. "We wanted to really come out and show we could run the ball and that`s what we did. We ran the ball. ...

UL-Lafayette inconsistencies provide unique betting opportunities

Oklahoma State -24 at UL-Lafayette O/U 62

Interesting take on the UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns as injuries and lack of depth have plagued this team late in games. In four contests this season, ULL has been outscored 68-14 in the second half with just a small disadvantage of 72-66 in first half. Going back to last season we see similar second half letdowns with opponents with a 170-89 advantage vs. only a 191-177 in the first half. So in their last 16 games, ULL was on average down 16.4-15.1 at halftime. In the second half of those contests, they were outscored 14.8-6.4. This suggests two things: ULL may be worth a look at +14 in the first half of Friday's game against Oklahoma State followed by a play on the Cowboys for the second half if the adjusted price is less than the game line.

Arkansas desperate for ways to establish run game

Texas A&M vs. Arkansas -6 O/U 62

A couple of quotes from the Arkansas camp discussing the team's desire to establish the run game. Through four games, the Razorbacks rank 103rd nationally with 103 ypg on the ground. They are averaging only 25.5 rushing attempts per game. Last season, they ranked 82nd with 131 ypg and 30.3 attempts per game. In last year's 47-19 win over Texas A&M, Arkansas ran for 163 yards on 5.3 ypc.

"We just have to run the ball more,'' Petrino said. "That's up to me to get us more runs called, to run it more, get into a rhythm and have confidence in it and force the issue.''

"If it was up to me, we'd throw it every down. That's any quarterback,'' said Mallet when asked if the lack of a running back puts additional pressure on him. "But you've got to get a good running game going, Read more

Recommendation: Texas A&M
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT – ABC (@ Dallas)

In this space two weeks ago we talked about the need for Arkansas’ defense to step up if the Hogs hoped to knock off No. 1 Alabama. They responded well, particularly in the first half. Eventually Alabama got the offense going and ended up rallying in the second half for a 24-20 win. Arkansas covered the number quite comfortably but you have to wonder how the loss has affected their mental game over the past two weeks.

This is a difficult scenario for Arkansas. Not only must they play away from home (“neutral site” at Arlington), but also out of conference while installed as a moderately priced favorite. They are coming off that devastating loss and it seems like it has the potential to “beat them twice”. Factor in the possibility for a bit of rust having not played in two weeks and you start to see some red flags.

The defense will need to Read more

North Texas goes with fourth different starting QB

10.06.2010     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
Arkansas State at North Texas N/L

Remember last Sunday night when absolutely nothing went right for the Chicago Bears? It got so bad that you were actually concerned that Jay Cutler may not live to see his next birthday. Well, that one game looked essentially like North Texas' entire season thus far. The Mean Green have lost as many as 13 players to season ending injuries and are preparing for this weekend's game against Arkansas State with their fourth different starting quarterback. Two weeks ago, despite all the injuries, they rallied for an upset road win at Florida Atlantic led by former starter Riley Dodge. But last Saturday, Dodge broke his wrist (still played) against UL-Lafayette and North Texas ended up losing 28-27 on a blocked extra point with 31 seconds remaining – their second one point loss on the season. Dodge will eventually need surgery but will be Read more

Sportsbooks react to John Brantley injury rumor

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rumors circulating that Florida quarterback John Brantley is injured and may miss this weekend's game against LSU. Various offshore sportsbooks took down their odds on the game. According to UF offensive coordinator Steve Addazio, there is no truth to Brantley's injury. Hilton sportsbook director Jay Kornegay was one of those who heard about Brantley's questionable status but the Hilton is currently offering Florida at -6.5 which suggest that they are indeed just rumors.

"We're hearing that (Brantley) is questionable," said Jay Kornegay, Sportsbook Director at the Las Vegas Hilton. "Whenever we get confirmation, either way, what his status is, if he's playing or not, that'll make it a betting game again."

"If the backup quarterback is comparable, we can usually throw it back up a little faster," he said. "But if you have Read more
