College Football Gambling: Rutgers adjusts to life as an up-tempo team

08.19.2016     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with our recent theme of first-year head coaches looking to go up-tempo, we take a look at the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Chris Ash steps in after serving as co-DC at Ohio State. He brings with him 28-year-old OC Drew Mehringer from Houston. Mehringer's offense is referred to as the "power spread" as will feature more pace. Rutgers ranked 13th in Big Ten play in total offense (338.9 ypg) last season.

"There’s some nuances and mechanics that go with the tempo," Blazek said, "and we’re picking up where we left off in the spring. … I like where they’re at."

But he added, "We’ve got some things we’ve got to work on."

"It’s something we’ve had to adjust to [physically]," the redshirt junior said of the faster-paced offense, "but I think it helps us out. It helps keep the defense on their toes. They’re not able to set up and make as many subs as they want, [and] at the same time it helps us

College Football Gambling: Maryland to go up-tempo under first-year coach

08.18.2016     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More new head coaches and more newly implemented up-tempo offenses. With Randy Edsall gone, Maryland first-year head coach DJ Durkin is trying to change the culture of the program and the first order of business is to improve an offense that ranked in the bottom half of nearly every category in the Big Ten. Durkin though appears aware that playing fast also means a defense that coughed up 41+ on five different occasions last season will be asked to participate more than likely wanted.

“(The amount of plays) used to be a big deal,” Bell explained. “You had people up there bragging about how many plays they ran, but at the end of the day it’s about winning the game. Our first year at Arkansas State (in 2014), we were sixth in the country in snaps per game and broke every record in the history in the conference, but we were 7-6 so nobody cared. And then last year, we were 33rd in snaps per game, still broke every record in the history of our conference, but, at the end of the day we were 8-0 in

College Football Handicapping: Mendendall wants Virginia to pick up pace

08.18.2016     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Virginia Cavaliers mark another team attempting to play up-tempo with a first-year head coach. Bronco Mendenhall says he wants the offense to "get with the times" and play as fast as possible. This of course will be a significant departure from former head coach Mike London's system. Virginia's offense actually showed flashes of competence last year as it quietly ranked fifth in ACC play in scoring (27.1 ppg) and total offense (400 ypg). However, on a national level, the Cavs ranked 76th at 5.49 yards per play.

“We train during practice based on the fastest teams in the country,” Mendenhall said. “Our practices are based on who is the very fastest in college football, what is their time between plays. And we mirror that.”

“Basically after a play’s dead, you’ve got to line back up, look at the signal, see what the play is, and get ready and be ready to go,” Eldridge said. “That’s the hardest part, transitioning, because you

College Football Handicapping: Rutgers attempts to overhaul offense

08.16.2016     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a new year and that means Rutgers is bringing in a new offensive coordinator. First-year OC Drew Mehringer will mark the seventh in seven years for the Scarlet Knights and is expected to install was is referred to as the "power spread" similar to that of Ohio State and Auburn. Rutgers averaged a pedestrian 67 plays per game last year.

"We install several different tempos," Mehringer said. "We're trying to manage the game and get the offense as well as the team in the best chance to win. Tempo and how we can affect that on offense is a big conversation."

“Do you have to have a pure running quarterback? No you don’t,” Mehringer said. “Do you have to tweak what you

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Preseason Handicapping Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 1 of the 2016 NFL Preseason is in the books, with underdog bettors showing a modest profit through the weekend’s action.  Non-bettors always seem shocked when I talk about betting (and beating) the preseason.  How can you bet on exhibition games?  I don’t even know the guys on the field in the second half.  Boy, you really must be a degenerate gambler if you’re betting on NFL Preseason.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.  A sharp bettor’s mantra is fairly simple and nearly universal: Bet when you have an edge.  Pass when you don’t.  That holds for regular season NFL and it holds for preseason NFL as well.  And there are no shortage of edges to find when it comes to betting August football.

In this two part column, I’ll illustrate the strategies that wiseguys use to attack preseason football.  In Part 1 (below), I’ll outline the basic market forces that create preseason pointspreads and show Preseason Handicapping 101 methods to beat those pointspreads.  In Part 2 next week, I’ll take a Deep Dive into some Advanced Betting Strategies for Read more

College Football Handicapping: Michigan defense expected to apply constant pressure

08.15.2016     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan's first-year defensive coordinator Don Brown is noted for being one of the most blitz-happy coaches in college football. Brown's Boston College defense ranked second nationally with 114 tackles for loss in 2015. Last year, the Wolverines ranked fifth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss (88) and sacks (32).

“I said ‘You know, Coach, I’m probably (bringing pressure) 65 percent (of the time).’ And he goes. ‘Nah, I hear 85.’ I think he knew what he was looking for.”

“Dr. Blitz knows what he’s doing, man. That’s what he’s great at. That’s what he hangs his hat on and that’s what we’re going to do. And I’m pretty sure everyone knows it.”

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Verlander) +100 at Seattle (Hernandez) O/U 7
Recommendation: Detroit

Since coming off the DL, Seattle has gone 3-1 in Felix Hernandez’s four starts.  Those results aren’t sustainable, because King Felix is no ‘King’ at this stage of his career. The results don’t lie.  Hernandez has a 5.26 ERA in those four starts since coming off the DL.  He’s allowed 35 baserunners while only notching 19 strikeouts, while giving up as many home runs as he did for the entire first half of the campaign.  His full season numbers are now below the MLB average in just about every advanced metric category.  His fastball velocity is down, his strikeout rate is down and his swinging strike percentage is down.  To make matters worse, he’s got a lousy track record against numerous current Tigers, including key middle of the order bats Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler.  Seattle’s bullpen behind him is completely spent following last night’s marathon.

Meanwhile, Justin Verlander is headed in the opposite direction of late.  Since getting extended rest Read more
