College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Syracuse Orange vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh -3.5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

Former Big East conference rivals the Syracuse Orange and the Pittsburgh Panthers meet at 9 am PT in the second round of the ACC tournament. The glory days of the clashes in Madison Square Garden for the Big East tourney are behind us, but this 8 vs. 9 matchup in our nation’s capital has epic potential. The teams are evenly matched statistically, but recently Pittsburgh has been a tough matchup for Syracuse. The Panthers have won the last four in the series and 14 of 20 under head coach Jamie Dixon. The Orange lost both games to Pittsburgh this season by a total of 25 points, mostly because of the second half performance and rebounding margin. In the second half of both games this year, Pittsburgh outscored the Orange 78-55. The Panthers shot 52% in the second half and held the Orange to 36%. Pittsburgh also crushed Syracuse on the boards by a staggering 86-48, while outscoring Syracuse 34-6 in second-chance points. Both teams have struggled down the stretch with the Orange losing four of five, while Pittsburgh has dropped three of its last four. Throwing out the fallacy that Read more

Detroit Tigers
2015 W-L:
  74-87
2015 O/U:  85-68-8
2015 Profits:  -10.3 units
2016 O/U Wins (Westgate):  80.5
2016 AL Central Odds (Westgate):  5/1
Projected Starting Rotation:  Justin Verlander, Jordan Zimmermann, Anibal Sanchez, Daniel Norris, Mike Pelfrey
Key Departures:  Rajai Davis
Key Additions:  Casey McGehee, Bobby Parnell, Justin Upton,  Jordan Zimmermann, Mike Pelfrey

Handicapper’s Take: “Health and age seem to be a common theme with the Tigers heading into 2016. This is an aging squad with their core -- Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Ian Kinsler, Justin Verlander, and Anibal Sanchez -- all north of 30 years old. They spent big dollars on Justin Upton and Jordan Zimmermann but it can't offset the fact that at least a few of the aforementioned group is likely going to miss significant time due to injury.

Key Departures: Brad Miller, Logan Morrison, Mark Trumbo, James Jones, Danny Fahquhar, Tom Wilhemson.
Key Additions: Wade Miley, Adam Lind, Leonys Martin, Steve Cishek, Joaquin Benoit, Chris Iannetta

Handicapper's Take: "New GM Jerry Dipoto engineered a significant offseason makeover for one of the most disappointing teams in baseball last year.  First year, first time manager Scott Servais is a former major leaguer, but his previous experience has all been in the front office, first in Texas as their Director of Player Development, then in LA as the Angels assistant GM.  Servais is Dipoto’s buddy, having worked under him in LA; a curious hire.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a short list of potential champs in 2016, consisting of the following 16 teams:  Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Villanova, Xavier, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Purdue, Oregon, Utah, Arizona and Texas A&M.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home. The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a favorable location one weekend, a team is still going to have to win four neutral site games in order to cut down the nets in Houston on April 4th.  And the best predictive evidence that I’ve seen for future success in neutral or hostile environments is previous success is neutral or hostile environments.

In most years, we’ll find a sub .500 road Read more

2015 O/U: 72-78-12
2015 Profits: +20.3 units
2016 O/U Wins (Westgate): 79.5
2016 AL Central Odds (Westgate):  6/1
Projected Starting Rotation: Phil Hughes, Ervin Santana, Kyle Gibson, Tommy Milone, Tyler Duffey
Key Departures: Jordan Schafer, Mike Pelfrey
Key Additions: Byung-ho Park

Handicapper's Take: "Minnesota was one of MLB's top profit producer last year at over +20 units of profit despite finishing four games over .500. This isn't a bad built ball club. There has been considerable effort to groom homegrown talent with Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton on the rise. And they got creative by inking first basemen/DH Byung-ho Park who showed plenty of power with a couple of 50+ home run seasons in South Korea. They've also committed to not overpaying for a stud starting pitcher but rather go to battle with a slew of middle-of-the rotation, pitch-to-contact strike throwers. It'll be a big boost Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UConn Huskies at SMU Mustangs

UConn +4.5 at SMU O/U 132.5
Recommendation: UConn

Yes, it’s senior night at SMU, with the Mustang trio of Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy and Jordan Tolbert getting their last home game.  With SMU ineligible for postseason play, and a chance to win the regular season conference title on the line, it’s not hard to figure out why the Mustangs are laying points in this matchup.  But laying points against UConn has been a moneylosing strategy all year, and the Huskies are primed to bring their A-game tonight, just as they did when they knocked off SMU in Storrs last month.

UConn is coming off a very disappointing home loss to Houston over the weekend, putting them right back on the Big Dance Bubble – this is a HUGE game for the road underdog.  And boy, UConn is a tough team to lay points against; a squad that has only lost four games by more than five points all season.  the Huskies don’t panic when trailing late and they take the ball to the basket instead of jacking up desperation three’s; exactly what you want from your mid-sized underdogs.

Huskies coach Kevin Ollie was not amused by Read more

Texas Tech +10 at West Virginia O/U 145
Recommendation: Texas Tech

The Red Raiders and the Mountaineers have surpassed preseason expectations with West Virginia (22-7, 11-5) picked to finish sixth and Texas Tech (18-10, 8-8) picked last in the Big XII. The Mountaineers are in second place in the season's final week while the Red Raiders are in seventh but in good position for an NCAA Tournament berth thanks to a strong RPI and strength of schedule. Tonight’s matchup is a rematch and the Mountaineers have taken five straight over the Red Raiders putting them at 8-1 in the all-time series with an 80-76 victory on Jan. 23. Texas Tech was up by four with under a minute left before allowing West Virginia's Tarik Phillip to score the game's final eight points. Jaysean Paige scored 22 and Phillip added 20 as West Virginia shot 51.0 percent. Tonight’s matchup features a hot Texas Tech team coming in 5-1 over its past six games which includes impressive wins over Oklahoma, Baylor, and Iowa State. Head coach Tubby Smith has his team alive for a NCAA tournament bid for the first time since 2007. While Morgantown is a tough venue, teams tend to be Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Florida desperate for defense as it plays host to Kentucky

03.01.2016     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida looked to be in good position to get to the Big Dance but three straight losses have the Gators in danger of not finishing with a winning record in SEC play. UF's defense has been non-existent as it allowed 87 to Vanderbilt and 96 last time out against LSU. First-year head coach Mike White claims that the team has done nothing but play defense in practice leading up to tonight's game against Kentucky.

“We got a little better offensively. But it took away from us being a good defensive team. We haven’t guarded the same way here of late.”

“Yesterday, 100 percent of the practice was defense,” White said. “And today, we’ll spend a lot more time on defense as well. I guess it’s always a balancing act, and we’ve got to get back to defending at a high level to give ourselves a chance.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA national champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Two years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played.  Obviously, there is room for a lot to change between now and the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils at Colorado Buffaloes

Arizona State at Colorado -7.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Colorado

In the not so distant future, Bobby Hurley will have Arizona State as a contender in the PAC-12. But it's pretty apparent that he and his current squad have tuned one another out. For starters, with two weeks to go in the season, Andre Spight decided to leave the program. It marked yet another player issue as injuries, suspensions, and now a departure have marred what was once a promising season (10-3 start). As for the play on the court, check out ASU's last three games: Lose by 13 at home to fellow bottom feeder UCLA, get destroyed by rival Arizona, 99-61, and trail Utah by margins of 30-2 and 64-19 en route to a 81-46 loss. The only thing Arizona State has to look forward to is the slim chance of a run in the PAC-12 Tournament. But before they get there, they'll have to play the second of the dreaded "elevation" trip of Salt Lake City to Boulder. They do get an extra day off having not played since Thursday but based on their current form, it won't matter. And we can expect a prime effort from the home side as Colorado (20-9, 9-7) can ill-afford a "bad loss." A Read more
