NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Vikings at Dallas Cowboys

08.29.2015     08:10 AM     Alex Smith     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Alex Smith

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota +1 at Dallas O/U 41.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings have been very dominant in the preseason under second-year head coach Mike Zimmer with near flawless marks of 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS. In watching this team it is very clear that Zimmer's attention to detail has rubbed off on his players all the way down to the third and fourth strings. It's a big reason why they've been so successful in these "meaningless" games. Tonight will mark their first true road game this preseason against the injury bitten Dallas Cowboys who return home after back-to-back road games. Defensive back Orlando Scandrick (ACL) is the latest casualty in a long list of key injuries. At this point, the squad can ill-afford another loss. You could see there was little to no interest in competing hard for 60 minutes the first two weeks as Dallas was outscored a combined 40-13. Reports indicate that more focus and effort will be placed on tonight's "dress rehearsal" but I just don't trust this squad will perform for an entire game. We've seen nothing but Minnesota money but still some value at the small underdog price.

Meet the world's best card counter

08.27.2015     08:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cool article on a gentleman billed as the world's best card counter.

“If I’m gonna play, the first thing I do is grow my beard,” he says. “Then I dye it. Then I add earrings. Then a hat.” Once he put his arm in a sling and pretended to be one-armed. “Halloween is the greatest,” he says, estimating that he’s made $300,000 on the holiday where identities are fully obscured.

“The casinos are very hip to that. You have to camouflage a big play in various ways,” says Blaine. “Most card counters play consistent, predictable, they’re like robots. I try to use instincts when I sense I’m being watched. I hit them big, get out of there, and they just think I got lucky.”

College Football Betting Update: Kansas married to up-tempo attack

08.27.2015     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Update on Kansas' rebuilding project. Yesterday the Jayhawks named Montell Cozart the team's starting quarterback. Cozart completed only 50% of his passes with a 5-to-7 TD-to-INT ratio last season. And it sounds as if head coach David Beaty is fully committed to running his up-tempo offense from the get-go. Beaty says they won't try to shorten the game despite being at a significant disadvantage both talent and depth wise.

“We won’t shorten the game,” Beaty says. “That’s not how we play the game. We’re going to continue to stay who we are because that’s how we practice every day.”

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin o-line is in shambles

08.27.2015     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Early season injuries for power conference teams aren't always a factor when you're laying three touchdowns against a Sun Belt school. But what happens when you face one of the top teams in the country? Wisconsin's offensive line is currently in disarray with as many as four players on the team's injury list. They are talking about having to start three freshmen. The Badgers are +10 underdogs to Alabama for Week 1's game in Arlington.

“I can’t remember (having so many guys hurt in camp), but it’s the camp at hand,” said Badgers offensive coordinator and line coach Joe Rudolph, according to Madison.com. “That’s all right, just keep going. It’s neat seeing guys jump into different spots and make it work. No one’s alarmed when their name gets called, that’s for sure.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Preseason Week 2 Betting Recap

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the NFL Preseason, when coaches almost never play for a late game tie to force overtime, there’s an enormous difference between laying -1 and -2.5.  Games decided by final margins or 1 or 2 points are relatively rare once September rolls around.  In August, they are commonplace.   Three games were decided by a single point this past weekend, in Week 2 of the preseason, with the Bills beating the Browns 11-10, the Chiefs beating the Seahawks 14-13 and the Panthers beating the Dolphins 31-30.

Both Kansas City-Seattle and Carolina-Miami produced a win, loss or push based on betting skills, not handicapping skills, with lines on both games moving up throughout the course of the week.   In addition, the Patriots pulled off the comeback of the weekend to beat New Orleans 26-24, a two point margin.  Meanwhile, there was only one game finishing with a final margin of three points; the Chargers 22-19 win at Arizona.

It was a similar story in Week 1, with more games finishing with 1 or 2 point final margins than games that were decided by exactly three points.   With two more weeks of these meaningless Read more

College Football Handicapping: Penn State looks to shore up offensive line

08.19.2015     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The fact that Penn State won seven games last season is somewhat of a miracle considering how poor the team's offensive line play was. Between their inability to protect the quarterback and run the football, the Nittany Lions had one of the worst power conference offenses in the country. As a result, shoring up the o-line has been a top priority during fall camp.

Penn State by the numbers (Overall)
101.92 ypg rushing - 120th nationally
2.94 yards per carry - 125th nationally
44 sacks allowed - 124th nationally

Penn State by the numbers (vs. Big Ten)
74.8 ypg rushing - 14th Big Ten
2.21 yards per carry - 14th Big Ten
35 sacks allowed - 14th Big Ten

“Obviously, it was a very frustrating season,” sophomore tackle Andrew Nelson. “You put in a bunch of time, and you want to perform at the highest level possible. And I don't think any of us are gonna use the excuse that we were a young and inexperienced offensive line. We wanted to perform at a

College Football Betting: Northern Illinois poised for another big season in the MAC

Northern Illinois Huskies (2014 Record:11-3 SU, 6-7 ATS)
5Dimes Season O/U Win Total: 8.5u-165
Head Coach: Rod Carey

The Turn of the Century has brought a world of change to DeKalb as the Huskies of Northern Illinois have spent most of the last decade as a power in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies pulled off another double-digit winning season in 2014, going 11-3 and winning the MAC title as they crushed Bowling Green 51-17 in a mega revenge spot after their disappointing 47-27 loss to the Falcons in Detroit back in 2013. Head coach Rod Carey returns for his third season in DeKalb and will have a mix of key starters returning, solid depth players, and several key recruits coming in to solidify the future.

Quarterback Drew Hare beat out two other quality arms to win the starting job last season, and Hare will return to helm an offense that averaged 31 points and 441 yards per game. With running back Cameron Stingly now running over tacklers as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the leading returning rusher for NIU is Hare, who put up 900 yards on the ground. College Football Handicapping: Rutgers on its sixth OC in as many seasons

08.17.2015     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Ralph Friedgen stepping down, Rutgers will go with its sixth different offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Former wide receiver coach Ben McDaniels will run an offense that ranked seventh in the Big Ten in total offense last season (390 ypg). The Scarlet Knights must replace quarterback Gary Nove who quietly finished third in the Big Ten in QB Rating (145.3). McDaniels says the team will continue to utilize a "pro-style" attack with "multiple tempos."

"I think one of those pieces that is a part of that (pro-style offense) is playing in multiple tempos, so we absolutely intend on playing in multiple tempos," McDaniels said Sunday at Rutgers media day. "It benefits you. It challenges the defense to have to be ready for that. So not dissimilar to a lot of places, we'll have multiple tempos we'll try and play at."

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver +5 at Seattle O/U 36.5
Recommendation: Denver

The betting markets are infatuated with Pete Carroll’s preseason track record in Seattle; installing the Seahawks as five point favorites against the Broncos.  And it’s easy to understand why the markets love Carroll in August, particularly playing at home.  They won their two home preseason games last year by 41-14 and 34-6 margins, won 40-10 and 22-6 in home preseason games in 2013, and won 27-17 and 21-3 in home preseason games in 2012.

But that’s all in the rear view mirror now – the conditions that existed in Seattle in recent years just don’t exist this year.  That makes the Seahawks a poor favorite for their 2015 preseason debut on Friday.   What has changed?  A LOT!

Fresh off back-2-back Super Bowl appearances, the Seahawks have nothing to prove in August.  Seattle has been one of the deepest teams in the league in recent seasons, giving them great depth in the second half of these preseason games.   That’s not the case anymore, with the Seahawks up against the salary cap – this is NOT a Read more
