Meineke Car Care Bowl - Houston, Texas
Friday, December 28, 6 pm PT - ESPN
Minnesota vs. Texas Tech
CRIS Opener:
Texas Tech -12.5 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -13 O/U 55
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas Tech -10.5

On the surface, Minnesota and Texas Tech will both be limping into the Meineke Car Care Bowl.  The Gophers dropped three of their last four games – the three losses by 20.6 ppg.  The Red Raiders lost four of their last five games with the lone win coming in overtime against woeful Kansas.  However, Minnesota may have the edge when it comes to momentum.  For starters, this will serve as their first postseason game since losing the Insight Bowl to Iowa State in 2009.  Taking matters further the Gophers haven’t won a bowl game since 2004 under the steady eye of former head coach Glen Mason.  No question, Minny’s Read more

College Football Betting: Northwestern prepares for Gator Bowl

Northwestern vs. Mississippi State -2 O/U 51.5

Northwestern talks about preparing for its Gator Bowl matchup against Mississippi State. The Wildcats have lost four consecutive bowl games.

“The guys who have played a lot of reps, their bodies are really starting to feel better. That’s key. You want to be crisp. Now we’re knocking out some physical practices and then when we get to Jacksonville, maybe we slow it down a bit.”

“I’m more comfortable in the (bowl) routine,” Fitzgerald said. “Like a lot of things, the first time you do it, you look back and think: 'What the heck was I doing?' We’ve definitely tweaked our plan. I’m probably jaded by what I experienced as a player.”

NBA Handicapping: Defense keeping Orlando Magic competitive

12.21.2012     06:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Orlando at Toronto -4 O/U 187

One of this season's biggest surprises has been the Orlando Magic (12-13) – in particular their performance on the defensive end of the floor. Under head coach Jacque Vaughn's tutelage, the Magic are currently sixth in the league in defensive efficiency (98.8). Last year, with three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard, the Magic ranked 13th (101.7). Orlando has gone UNDER the total in six of its last eight games.

"I don't mind if we have zero steals," Vaughn said recently. "I love to have contested shots, and I love for us to be in a position to rebound the basketball."

"If there's anything that has surprised me, it's been our level of defense and our defensive competence," guard J.J. Redick said.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: UC Davis Aggies vs. Southern Illinois Salukis

UC Davis vs. Southern Illinois -6
Recommendation: Southern Illinois

UC Davis is a bottom-feeder team coming off a 5-26 season.  They’re 2-6 so far this year, as head coach Jim Les was forced to bring in nine new players to his roster in an effort to rebuild.  But the Aggies have earned some betting market respect with some tighter-than expected losses.

Those losses, at Oklahoma State, Idaho and Nevada and a couple of high scoring wins against Eastern Washington and Sacramento State, have the markets somewhat bullish on the Aggies.  But when Cal Davis has faced a strong defensive foe, their offense has bogged down, and they are light years away from being a good team on the defensive end of the court, allowing more than 75 points per game this season.

Southern Illinois allows only 59 points per game on 42% shooting.  But the key stat is their 0.56 assist-to-turnover ratio allowed, forcing more than 17 Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oakland Grizzlies at West Virginia Mountaineers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland at West Virginia -11.5 O/U 146.5
Recommendation: West Virginia

Reading the quotes from Bobby Huggins, practice probably wasn't easy for the Mountaineers this week. Various players are in the dog house while others were called out for not putting in extra work. This team has plenty of issues but the biggest one is not being able to put the ball in the bucket. Their effective FG% ranks 318th nationally while they are hitting less than 27% of their threes. Now this isn't the type of team that is going to shoot 50% from the floor on a consistent basis but there will be nights when the shots do fall. Entire the Oakland Grizzlies who don’t play a lick of defense. They sport the second worst 2-point FG% defense in the country at 61.1%. That means WVU should have plenty of easy looks and not be forced to rely on outside shots. The Grizzlies have also had a difficult time stepping up in class on the road. With the exception of the 10-point overtime Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Big Ten trending OVER the total in non-conference play

12.19.2012     08:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seems like every year during non-conference play there is talk of Big Ten teams playing at a faster tempo. Then of course once conference play starts, games routinely fail to top 120 points. The Big Ten is currently 45-32 O/U but from a possessions-per-game perspective not a whole lot has changed. Indiana and Iowa are running just like last year. Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio State are also looking to push the pace. Michigan State has made an effort to do get out in transition but the Spartans did the same thing last year during non-conference and ended up averaging 62.5 possessions per game in Big Ten play. The rest of the league continues to grind with Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Penn State and Nebraska all ranked among the slowest teams in the country. Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan summed it up by saying that a lot of teams "look faster" during non-conference play in part because they can simply outclass the opposition. But with the exception of Nebraska (who is still slow as hell under Tim Miles) and Illinois, there are no new coaches or significant Read more

Little Caesars Bowl - Detroit, Mich.

Central Michigan vs. Western Kentucky
CRIS Opener:
Western Kentucky -6 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Western Kentucky -5.5 O/U 58.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Western Kentucky -9

In what might be a rare situation this college bowl season we’ve got a game featuring two teams that figure to be “hungry” to partake in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl. Western Kentucky will be playing in its first ever bowl game while Central Michigan gets a short trip to Detroit which represents its first bowl appearance since 2009.

The stadium certainly won’t be sold out but a decent turnout is expected to add a little flavor here. CMU has a large alumni base in the Detroit area and the short drive for current students and fans should make an attractive destination for a Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: How NFL Playoff Contenders fared in Week 15

12.17.2012     08:27 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I've been concentrating on playoff contenders for the last few weeks. Here are my thoughts as I was watching Sunday's games about eight squads that all faced off against other potential playoff foes.

Chicago - What's wrong with the Bears? Simple – the NFL is a pass-first league and Chicago has a bottom-tier passing game. Jay Cutler doesn't have time to throw the football. He got leveled on three of the first five times he dropped back to pass, and had happy feet in the pocket thereafter. He spent most of the game targeting Brandon Marshall almost exclusively (other than dump off passes to Matt Forte), but only on short routes – Cutler once again, didn't compete a single pass of longer than 20 yards. Throw in a series of costly penalties on both sides of the football and, even on a day where the defense stepped up, the Bears came up short in front of a very hostile home crowd. Forget their 7-1 start. The positive team chemistry from September and October has evaporated.

Denver - Strong pass rush! I'm not sure there's a defense in the NFL that has improved more since September than these Broncos. They are Read more
