College Basketball Handicapping: Florida's Walker cleared to play

Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
At long last, the NCAA has reached a conclusion in the case of Florida freshman Chris Walker. The organization announced Wednesday that Walker has been suspended for 12 games and he's cleared to return in UF's home game Tuesday vs. Missouri.

Why? Well, Walker apparently received $270 from two different agents while he was playing AAU basketball during his high-school years. He also got free food, free airfare and hotel lodging from three different people. For this, he must perform 80 hours of community service. The NCAA also indicated that associates of Walker were provided free airfare for eight different trips for his AAU team.

My only question: What big-time high-school recruit doesn't receive all of the benefits listed above?

Anyway, we all know how incompetent the NCAA is, so that's not a big shocker. The good news for Florida is that there's finally a resolution to this mess.

“I appreciate all the support from UF, Coach Donovan and my teammates, and I'm looking forward to helping the team any way I can,” Walker said in a statement.

Walker is a McDonald's All-American who led Holmes Co. High School to a state title in Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Butler Bulldogs at Seton Hall Pirates

Butler at Seton Hall -5.5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Seton Hall

Over the last ten years, Butler has morphed into the new Gonzaga; the mid-major team with the most consistent NCAA tournament success.  But three major things have changed for the Bulldogs in 2014.  First head coach Brad Stevens, the architect of the ‘Butler way’ has moved on to the NBA.  Second, the competition is much tougher as they’ve moved from the Horizon League to the A-10 and now to the Big East.

But the biggest difference of all is that this Butler team simply doesn’t have the talent to compare with recent editions.  There are no NBA caliber players on the roster like Gordon Hayward, Shelvin Mack or Matt Howard.  Nor are there all – conference caliber players like Rotnei Clark, Roosevelt Jones or Andrew Smith.  This would be a middle of the pack A-10 team this year.  In the Big East, that puts Butler right with Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Bettors gear up for Super Bowl XLVIII

01.27.2014     08:14 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Super Bowl time again; the moral equivalent of Christmas Day for sports bettors. Yet many of the professional full time bettors that I know are rather disappointed with the proposition betting opportunities this year – there’s simply not much low hanging fruit. The biggest and best sportsbooks (market leaders both here in Vegas and offshore) have learned from previous mistakes. Bad numbers do NOT abound in 2014.

Let me start with the game itself. The Super Bowl itself has been an underdog bettor’s paradise in recent years.  The Ravens won the Super Bowl last year as the underdog, beating the favored 49ers. The Giants won the year before as an underdog; knocking off the Patriots. In 2010, the Saints won straight up as a dog over Peyton Manning and the Colts. In 2009, the Cardinals covered the spread in a tight loss to the Steelers. In 2008, the Giants beat the favored 18-0 Patriots outright. The only favorite to win and cover in the last six Super Bowls was the Packers when they beat the Steelers in 2011.

The underdog trend in the Super Bowl goes back even further than that, with four consecutive dog covers from 2002 through 2005 Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Injury Report 1-24-2014

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Can you really blame Michigan State junior Branden Dawson? When I'm forced to listen to ESPN analyst Dan Dakich talk (about anything!), I want to pull my hair out. Dakich is the Mark May of college basketball. I disagree with everything that comes out of his mouth and his delivery is the equivalent of fingernails screeching across the chalkboard. During a Thursday film session for the Spartans, Dakich was commenting on a mistake by Dawson, prompting him to slam his hand against a table. The result is a broken bone in his right (shooting) hand that will cause him to miss the next 4-5 weeks. Dawson averages 10.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He also has 22 steals and 17 blocked shots. Senior center Adreian Payne (16.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG) has missed four straight games with a foot injury, and he is 'doubtful' Saturday vs. Michigan.

Minnesota's leading scorer Andre Hollins (16.2 PPG) suffered a sprained ankle in the opening minutes of this week's home win over Wisconsin. The results of an MRI were negative and there's a chance Hollins will play Saturday at Nebraska. He is listed as 'questionable.'

Alabama played without its second-leading scorer in last night's 68-62 Read more

Man sentenced for running high-end underground poker games

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A man who ran one of New York's biggest illegal poker shops was sentenced five months. A-Rod was allegedly one of his patrons.

"Yeah, he plays once in a while but, ahhh, now he's in training," Ting said, promising to ask the gambler about taking a picture with the associate's son. "Can you call me when he's in New York? I want to introduce to my, my younger son," Vadim Trincher said.

"These games attracted celebrities, Wall Street financiers and other wealthy individuals, as well as individuals associated with organized crime."

Super Bowl XLVIII Betting News: Oddsmakers concerned about weather

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More oddsmakers voicing their concerns about the potentially dicey weather conditions for Super Bowl XLVIII.

“With the game being in New York and the early forecast for below normal temperatures in the teens that certainly favors a defensive team and a running team,” said Jay Kornegay, sports book director at the LVH. “That would certainly be an advantage to the Seahawks.”

“If it’s big snow you can take all the handicapping and anything we thought we knew and throw it out the window,” said Johnny Avello, the book director at the Wynn hotel.

“There will probably be more money on Seattle if the forecast is for colder than normal with rain or sleet,” Vaccaro said. “But the biggest thing that will make the wise guys get off their wallets now is if Denver goes to 3 (point favorite). If it’s 85 degrees out they will still take plus 3 with Seattle.”

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ottawa -105 at Washington O/U 5.5
Recommendation:  Ottawa

Ottawa comes into Washington looking to get back on track after two straight losses at home.  Prior to those losses the Senators had been on a 6-1-1 run and playing tremendous hockey.  Coach Paul MacLean said, “Since the first of December we've been a pretty consistent team game in and game out.”  After having a day off of the ice on Sunday the Senators are recharged and facing a Washington team they have owned this season (6-4, 3-1 wins)…and since 2011. Washington has had some major problems as of late and things may get worse with Alex Ovechkin’s status in question.  Regardless if Ovechkin is in the lineup or not the confidence of the Capitals has been shattered.   Washington has struggled lately losing 11 of its last 14 games while finding zero consistency in goal.  Washington head coach Adam Oates has his hands full trying to create something out of nothing.  This is not a team that should be favored regardless of their home record.  Tonight is a case of too much respect given to Washington on home ice.  Read more

A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: A trip down Super Bowl memory lane

01.20.2014     07:15 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On the one hand, the Super Bowl is just another game for a professional bettor.  On the other hand, the Super Bowl has two major differences.  First and foremost are the prop bets; quite literally hundreds of wagering opportunities that allow bettors to wager from everything on the coin toss and the length of the national anthem to whether Russell Wilson will throw more touchdown passes than Manchester United will score goals on Super Bowl Sunday.  I’ll write about those next week.

The other biggest difference between Super Bowls and other games?  Simple – the Super Bowls stand out in our memories; every one of them.  I’ve been in Vegas since the 1998 football season, and I can tell you where I watched every Super Bowl, what the pointspread was and who covered. Thank you in advance for indulging me a brief trip down memory lane.

My first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was when the Broncos faced the Falcons as favorites of about a TD back in January 1999.  I watched the game in the stadium seating at the Imperial Palace racebook.  My handicap was simple, thinking Denver had a big edge having played in (and beaten) the Read more

NFC Championship Betting Recap: Seattle snags win and cover over San Francisco

01.20.2014     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

A very evenly played battle came right down to the final possession. San Francisco got within striking distance for the game-winning touchdown. But, a stellar defensive play from Seattle forced an interception, and sent the Seahawks to the Super Bowl to face the Denver Broncos.

Seattle (-4) 23, San Francisco 17
S. Fran: 308 yards, 5.7 per-play, 3 turnovers, 27% third downs
Seattle: 308 yards, 5.3 per-play, 1 turnovers, 36% third downs

Other Numbers
San Francisco: 161 rush, 14-24-2-147 passing, 14 drive points, 21 stat score, 25 sloppiness
Seattle: 115 rush, 16-25-0-193 passing, 17 drive points, 19 stat score, 14 sloppiness

That 308-308 dead heat in yardage tells you how even the flow of the game was. Stat score was right on the money in terms of total points. But, the turnover disadvantage kept San Francisco from getting quite where they were supposed to. Turnovers and sloppiness are a bit misleading because Seattle had a lost fumble that Read more
