College Football Gambling: UNLV says freshman QB will start vs. Minnesota

08.22.2012     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Nice Sherry will be the team's Week 1 starter against Minnesota. The fact that Sherry beat out last year's starter, Caleb Herring, is a positive sign though Herring did post the worst QB rating (102.8) in the Mountain West last. UNLV is lined at 4.5un-285 wins according to 5Dimes. Some varying opinion on their Week 1 home opener against Minnesota. CRIS opened the Rebels +9 and it dropped to as low as +7. It then shot up to +10 at a few sportsbooks before settling back in at its current number of +9.

“I’m going to take chances. I’m going to throw the deep ball,” he said. “I’m going to throw the ball down the field. I’m going to extend the defense and make them respect the deep ball and respect the deep routes.”

“He keeps improving. He has a big arm,” Hauck said. “He has improved his understanding of what it will take to get the job done. We feel he gives us a chance to be competitive

NCAAF Handicapping: West Virignia expected to play even more up-tempo

08.20.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia is hoping for even more tempo and pace to its offense in head coach Dana Holgorsen's second season. Last year, the Mountaineers averaged just under 74 plays per game. They ranked 19th nationally in points per play at 0.476. Note that the Big XII will feature five teams who ranked in the top 25 in points per play in 2011: Oklahoma State (1st), Baylor (9th), Oklahoma (17th), West Virginia and Kansas State (21). Nine of WVU's 13 games went over the total last year.

“I have never installed this offense to where you look back at the end of the first year and are like, ‘We’re good that year.’ You always look back and it’s like, ‘How did we win a game?’” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “I don’t think (our tempo) necessarily got to where we wanted it to.”

“I think our tempo is going to be extreme this year between really fast and slowing it down and really fast and slowing it down,” Dawson said. “We should be able to have three or four different tempos,

College Football Handicapping: Fresno State looks promising under DeRuyter

08.16.2012     02:52 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I think first-year head coach Tim DeRuyter walks into a pretty good situation at Fresno State. Under Pat Hill, the Bulldogs were consistent winners but could have been better had Hill tightened up the reigns some. The just-let-the-kids-play attitude no question helped when they were asked to step up in class. But with the amount of talent the Bulldogs had, there's really no excuse that under Hill they failed to finish better than third in the WAC from 2004-11.

Going back and looking at some of FSU's stats the last few years, the one that stands out was turnovers. From 2004-11, they were a combined -65 in turnover margin despite winning 56% of their games and posting five seasons of eight wins or better. And it wasn't just offensive miscues but more the inability to force turnovers. Over the last five years, no team in the country had as few takeaways as Fresno State (65). As a comparison, Air Force, where DeRuyter spent three seasons, posted 140 during that span.

Another thing that really deteriorated during Hill's last few seasons was the defense. And despite some injuries, I saw it more as a lack of effort and discipline. DeRuyter is the perfect Read more

College Football Gambling: Bettors show early love for Michigan State

Boise State at Michigan State -7

Michigan State is expected to start Andrew Maxwell at quarterback for the team's opener against Boise State. According to reports, Maxwell looked the part during a recent scrimmage. Boise State meanwhile has yet to commit to a signal caller. Junior Joe Southwick has the most experience but head coach Chris Peterson wants to keep the position open. The Broncos return only seven starters this season (5 off, 2 def). The betting markets have come out in strong support of the Spartans thus far. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

College Football Betting: San Diego State considering radical philosophy

08.13.2012     11:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Be interesting to how this little experiment plays out. San Diego State head coach Rocky Long is considering testing the waters with the "no punt in opponents' territory" formula this season. The Aztecs' punting game was actually one of the nation's best last year (14th, 43.8 yards per punt), but punter Brian Stahovich graduated. SDSU converted on only 39% of its 4th down plays (9-for-23) in 2011. Nice find by posting forum user Wazvito.

“It makes sense,” he said, seeming almost giddy in talking about the possibilities.

“Additional plays would allow you to score a lot more points,” he said. “It also puts a whole lot of pressure on the defense.”

“It’s a day-to-day theory,” Long said with a grin. “I haven’t decided because we’re getting a feel for it out here. I just read about this guy, and I don’t know if I can do that because everybody in the world is going to say this is not Football 101, right?

“But

College Football Gambling: Six returning starters and low expectations for Air Force

08.01.2012     01:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Air Force doesn't typically return a lot of starters year-to-year compared to the rest of the country. Last year's 14 was actually way above their seven year average of about 11. They've obviously been able to function (and succeed) despite the yearly roster turnovers but this season, it's hard to ignore their lack of experience with only six starters (3 off, 3 def) back. It was a similar situation back in 2004 under Fisher DeBerry. DeBerry inherited only six returning starters and suffered his first losing season in over a decade. And not only is AFA down from a raw numbers standpoint, but the shoes that need to be filled are fairly big.

Included in the losses are the school’s all-time leader in wins for a quarterback (Tim Jefferson), the academy’s second all-time leading rusher (Asher Clark) and others who played at an all-conference level (safety Jon Davis, cornerback Anthony Wright, receiver Jonathan Warzeka, guard A.J. Wallerstein, linebacker Brady Amack among them). The Falcons have just two members on the all-conference preseason team this year: outside

Handicapper Teddy Covers gives the scoop on summer football betting in Vegas

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The LVH Superbook is most assuredly a wiseguy friendly establishment, consistently ranked along with the Cantor books as the best sportsbooks in town. Jay Kornegay and his staff are industry leaders – the betting boards at LVH are loaded with a bevy of wagering opportunities that many books in town don’t offer; particularly around Super Bowl time.

Kornegay doesn’t ratchet up the juice either, offering ten cent lines during baseball season and twenty cent lines for his win totals on both NFL and college football. On their future book, the LVH is willing to adjust in both directions. For example, within the past week, the LVH adjusted their Odds to Win the Division for the 2012 NFL season on ten of the 32 teams.

Five of those teams are now more expensive to buy – less of a return on investment since last week. But five of those teams are now cheaper to buy, offering better value than they did a week ago. Many sportsbooks in town simply adjust odds down from their openers in response to the bets they’ve received, but the LVH is one book willing to adjust upwards in an effort to attract more handle.

The LVH took center stage Read more

Washington State at Oregon State -7 O/U 151
Recommendation: Over

Washington State was not a particularly good team this year, finishing 7-11 in a down year for the PAC-12.  The Cougars stumbled down the stretch: 2-4 SU in their last six regular season games, then bowing out of the conference tournament with a first round loss to the same Oregon State team they’ll face today.  Don’t expect Wazzu’s chances of victory to be any better in the short turnaround rematch; the fourth meeting between these same two teams since New Year’s Eve.

The Cougars have survived and advanced through their first two CBI Tournament games thanks to some extremely favorable matchups.  They shot 60% from the floor and hit 25-of-28 from the free throw line against a San Francisco team that simply didn’t have a legitimate defensive gameplan in a step-up-in-class Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

03.13.2012     01:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NCAA Tournament East Regional
No. 7 Gonzaga -1 vs. No. 10 West Virginia O/U 133
Thursday, 4:20 pm PT - Pittsburgh, Pa.
Rob Veno Power Rating: Gonzaga -3

Betting Take: West Virginia somehow slipped into the tournament despite only four wins since January 25 (Providence, Pitt, DePaul and South Florida). Last year, the Mountaineers were +4.4 in points per possession scored vs. allowed in Big East play. This year's mark was a mediocre +1.6. They still play hard and still hit the offensive glass with reckless abandon but they don't defend particularly well and are the worst three-point shooting team in the Big East at 28.7%. Gonzaga should be able to handle WVU's size and physical nature with 7-0 Robert Sacre, 6-7 Elias Harris and 6-9 Sam Dower. The one concern with the Zags is can they win on the road? In "step up" road games, Gonzaga lost to Illinois, St. Mary's, BYU and San Francisco. Their best road win came against a Xavier squad that while at full strength was still reeling from suspensions. Note also the proximity (75 miles) of this contest for West Virginia.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: New Mexico Lobos at UNLV Rebels

New Mexico +4 at UNLV O/U 134.5
Recommendation: New Mexico

This is a true home game for UNLV, and the betting markets are definitely respecting the Rebels strong home court.  We’ve seen money pour in on UNLV in early betting action on Friday, respecting UNLV’s perfect 18-0 mark at the Thomas & Mack Center.

But we must remember three things right off the bat.  First, the Lobos are very familiar with this venue, playing their third game on this court in the last two months.  Second, the Lobos travel extremely well, with thousands of their own fans making the trip to Las Vegas – New Mexico will enjoy plenty of crowd support tonight, even on this hostile floor.  And third, right now, New Mexico is the better of these two teams!

The Rebels were nothing short of outstanding in non-conference play, including upset wins over North Carolina and what was a good Illinois team at the time.  The Rebels Read more
