Backyard Brawl Gambling: West Virginia and Pitt try to stay in Big East race

11.22.2011     09:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Pittsburgh at West Virginia -6.5 O/U 57

The Backyard Brawl rivalry commences this weekend in Morgantown with West Virginia playing host to Pittsburgh. Perhaps some bad blood between the two head coaches as Dana Holgorsen accused (and supposedly caught) then Tulsa coach Todd Graham of having his player fake injuries to slow down the Cougars' offense during a 2009 game.

Both teams come in off of bye weeks and are 3-2 in Big East play with two games remaining. Louisville and Rutgers are 4-2 but close out the regular season on the road.

"Yeah, they were cheating," Holgorsen told radio station KGOW-AM in Houston. "We've got some inside information on how they did it."

"It goes back to the coaching thing," Holgorsen said. "There is always a tremendous amount of respect when it comes to coaching Read more

NCAAB Handicapping Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at New Mexico Lobos

11.16.2011     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
New Mexico State at New Mexico -12 O/U 142.5

Early season rivalry with New Mexico State traveling north to take on New Mexico. The Lobos are favored by some to win the Mountain West with four returning starters. They’ve won seven straight in the series (5-0-2 ATS). The Aggies meanwhile also return four starters and for once actually look to have a full complement of players with injuries and suspensions hampering the team last year. The Pit can be a tough place to play, especially for a rival, but if NMSU can keep its composure, it has enough fire power to stick around as double-digit underdogs.

“I think this is the deepest State team in my five years,” Alford said, “and the biggest, most athletic, probably most-potential State team in Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Cincinnati turns to dual-threat quarterback Legaux

11.14.2011     01:24 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Cincinnati -3 at Rutgers

Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros is out for the rest of the season after breaking his ankle in last week's loss to West Virginia. The Bearcats (3-1) remain atop the Big East standings but a host of other teams enter the week only a half-game back.  Munchie Legaux will take over for Collaros the rest of the way. Legaux finished 10-of-21 for 144 yards and an interception against the Mountaineers. He's not as polished a passer as Collaros, but was recruited as more of a dual-threat – 77 yards on the ground vs. WVU. According to Cinci's coaches, they plan to open up the offense even more to accommodate Legaux's skill set.

"Probably we'll open it up," he said. "That may seem hard to imagine, but we may open it up because not only can he throw the football, Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling News: UNLV a 13-point favorite over rival Nevada

Nevada at UNLV -13 O/U 145

Battle of the Silver State with Nevada on the road taking on UNLV. The Wolf Pack will try to bounce back after a horrific 68-46 home loss to Missouri State in Reno. UNLV opened with an 83-66 win over Grand Canyon. The Rebels have won five straight in the series by margins of 12, 14, 7, 12 and 9.

"The next game is always important, especially coming off a loss," shooting guard Malik Story said. "If we just come in and focus and make sure we learn from our mistakes and make sure we don't make them again, I'm not worried about the last performance. We'll never make that performance again."

"We're going to have bad games, and we're going to have good games," Burton said. "We know what we have to Read more

Below is a conference-by-conference list of teams who are close to gaining bowl eligibility. I’ve included a pair of categories: 1) Teams that can get in with a win this week or 2) Desperate teams that need to win two of their final three games to qualify (marked with an asterisk). The team attempting to qualify has their current record in parenthesis next to their name and has their opponent this week with location and point spread. Their remaining games are in italics.

College Football Betting Recap: SDSU's Long accurately predicts meltdown

10.31.2011     08:28 AM     Printer Friendly

On Friday we posted some quotes from San Diego State head coach Rocky Long on how he felt Saturday's game against Wyoming was a potential letdown situation for his team. He couldn't have handicapped it any better. A clear case of a bye week being a negative as SDSU came out sluggish against what was thought to be an inferior opponent. On the other hand, the Cowboys, who also came in off of a bye, were well prepared, and jumped out to a 30-13 halftime lead. The Aztecs woke up in the second half, forced Wyoming to punt on its first eight possessions and held them scoreless. But it wasn't enough as Wyoming (+18.5) hung on for a 30-27 win and improved to 5-2 (2-0 Mountain West) while San Diego State dropped to 4-3 (1-2 MW). Another sketchy situation this weekend with the Aztecs laying over five touchdowns against bottom feeder New Mexico.

NCAAF Handicapper Free Pick: West Virginia Mountaineers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

10.29.2011     07:39 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
West Virginia at Rutgers +6.5 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Rutgers

Rutgers has two losses so far this season. Those two losses – on the road at North Carolina and on the road at Louisville – have come by a combined total of four points. The Scarlet Knights offensive weaknesses make them a poor choice as a favorite, but make no mistake about it – this is a defensive minded ‘find a way to compete’ type of ballclub; exactly what this bettor looks for from his home underdogs.

Rutgers frosh QB Gary Nova is coming off his worst game at the collegiate level. Head coach Greg Schiano doesn’t expect any carryover effect this week, and he thinks the Scarlet Knights are primed to start connecting on some of their downfield shots in the passing game. “We have not hit the home run, period, very much. That’s something we’re lacking as an offense, and I think that’s why we’re not scoring enough points. Read more

College Football Pointspread Notes: SDSU's Long leery of letdown vs. Wyoming

10.28.2011     12:24 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Wyoming at San Diego State -18 O/U 57

San Diego State head coach Rocky Long and the betting markets aren't in agreement for Saturday's game vs. Wyoming. Long seems awfully concerned that his team may not get up for upcoming games against the Cowboys, New Mexico, and Colorado State. Bettors haven't been nearly as leery, hammering the Aztecs up from an opener of -14.5 to -18 (-19 at Jazz, Hilton). Also note than earlier this week, only 25,000 tickets had been distributed for the game. Qualcomm Stadium holds over 70,000 and SDSU drew 44,000 against TCU.

“Hopefully we’ve matured and we’re smart enough not to fall for it, but it is a concern, yeah,” said Long, SDSU’s head coach.

"I’m nervous about the game a little bit," Long said.

“There’s so much more to a team Read more

NCAAF Betting Alert: Totals moving down because of East Coast weather

10.28.2011     09:14 AM     Printer Friendly
Seeing some totals movement for a couple of East Coast game with dicey weather forecasts. Illinois-Penn State was bet down to 39.5. West Virginia-Rutgers down from 54 to 53. And Boston College-Maryland from 51.5 to as low as 50 (Grande). Weather reports courtesy of Sports Options. Be sure to double check tomorrow morning.

From Rob Veno: Also include the Virginia Tech-Duke and Tulane-East Carolina games to the weather watch. Even though it won't rain during the games, it will rain right up until game time and then winds are expected to pick up – wet fields with wind and three of the four are passing teams. I was going to play both (15* ECU over) but removed them from the card.
