Mountain West Betting Preview: Air Force at Wyoming

Air Force +2 at Wyoming O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Air Force

My clients and I cashed an easy “right side” winner when Air Force beat Wyoming 72-51 in the first meeting between these two schools. Here’s an excerpt from that write-up:

“The Cowboys were not a particularly deep team coming into the season, and a series of injuries has made their depth concerns significantly worse in recent weeks, even after a week long layoff. Four of their top seven players are either nursing injuries or out. Last year’s leading scorer Afam Muojeke is done for the year after another season ending knee injury. Center Adam Waddell has a sore Achilles. Second leading scorer and leading rebounder Djibril Thiam has a bad toe. Starting point guard JayDee Luster has a bad hip.

Air Force is coming off a trio of losses against the three best teams in the conference, losing at San Diego St and BYU, and at home to UNLV. But this Falcons squad was good enough to beat Utah Read more

CBB Betting Alert: Fredette expected to play against Colorado State

02.23.2011     06:33 AM     Printer Friendly
Colorado State at BYU N/L

BYU's Jimmer Fredette (calf) is expected to play tonight against Colorado State after missing Monday's practice. The team's sports information director sent a text message to the media stating that Fredette did everything in practice on Tuesday. With what is being billed as the Mountain West Game of the Year – BYU at San Diego State this Saturday – tonight's tilt against the Rams could be considered a look-ahead. CSU hung tough in a 94-85 loss to BYU back in late January.

”They made a couple of really nice runs against us and that was where we had some defensive liabilities,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “This is a very good offensive team and they shoot a really high percentage from the field, they have multiple shooters on the floor, Read more

Mountain West Betting Preview: TCU Horned Frogs at Utah Utes

TCU at Utah -7.5 O/U 138

Utah is starting to reveal a little identity in terms of its pacing. On the road and against better competition, we've seen the Utes slow things down in order to lessen turnovers and shorten the game (72-59 loss to BYU, 62-60 win over New Mexico). That hasn't been the case on its home turf however as Utah recently beat Wyoming 80-70 in Salt Lake City. Tonight, Utah faces a team it should handle in TCU. The total of 137.5/138 looks to be fair with Utah capable of scoring 75 points even with a somewhat conservative game plan. We'll be looking to play Utah under the total in its next two games as they travel to Colorado State and play host to UNLV.

“Especially on the road, it’s real important for us to play with less margin for error,” Boylen said. “We shoot better and the crowds get into turnovers and it’s about managing these Read more

San Diego State -11.5 at Air Force O/U 120.5
Recommendation: Under

The San Diego State Aztecs (26-1) continue their remarkable season and push for a Mountain West Conference title when they travel to Colorado Springs to take on the Air Force Falcons (13-11) Saturday. The Aztecs are laying a big price as they try to stay on top of the MWC. San Diego State is 11-1 and currently holding off BYU (10-1).

The Aztecs will have a dominating edge on the boards as they lead the league in rebounding margin while Air Force at the bottom of the rebounding stats. Kawhi Leonard leads the league in rebounding while adding 14 ppg and Malcolm Thomas is no. 3 in rebounding and a top shot-blocker. Along with senior Billy White, the Aztecs can dominate the Flyboys inside.

Air Force’s only chance to pull a big upset is to use the shot clock and have a big game from the perimeter. Sharp-shooting swingman Tom Fow leads the league in 3-point shooting at 55 percent. Air Force hits 44 percent from the Read more

Odds on How Many Teams Per Conference will make the NCAA Tournament

02.17.2011     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
Odds now available at The Greek on home many teams from each conference will make the NCAA Tournament. We've put together a very rough estimate of teams that are in or on the bubble. The O/U on the SEC (6) is by far and away the weirdest line. The only way you can lose that bet is if they get seven teams in which doesn't seem mathematically possible at this point. With some of the heavy juice towards the under, it is almost as if you are betting whether or not a non-at large team will win their conference tournament.

So-Con Betting Free Pick: Samford at Appalachian State

Samford at Appalachian State -7.5 O/U 129
Recommendation: Under

Samford is currently one of the slowest paced teams in the country. Kenpom.com has them listed 336th in the country with 61.4 possessions per game. Even against some of the more up-tempo teams in the So-Con, the Bulldogs have maintained their slow pace throughout conference play. Typically these slow paced teams work the clock in order to come up with a high percentage shot but that isn’t the case with Samford who is shooting just 42% FGs for the season. Even more concerning is that in conference play, they have connected on only 31% of their three-pointers which accounted for half of their field goal attempts. On the road the Bulldogs have had even more difficulties scoring (56 ppg in conference games). The Mountaineers have played a bunch of games of late where the pace was slower than expected. They’ve also struggled to shoot the ball with only a 41.6% FG mark over their last six games. Considering the projected slow pace and Read more

Offensive struggles continue to plague UNLV

02.09.2011     11:33 AM     Printer Friendly
UNLV -9 at TCU O/U 135

Fairway Jay passed along some news and notes for tonight's game: UNLV travels to Fort Worth to take on TCU as the Horned Frogs play their fourth-straight game without suspended guard and leading scorer Ronnie Moss. But UNLV's scoring struggles are a concern, and the Rebels are on a 0-5 ATS run and just 1-3 ATS on the road in conference play. TCU has lost six-straight games and 10 of its last 11 (4-7 ATS). Since UNLV's home blowout over TCU 83-49 on January 8, the Rebels have scored 67 points or less in six of seven games.

UNLV head coach Lon Kruger summed up it best in a recent article from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

"We're 17-6 and it feels like we're 12-11," coach Lon Kruger said. "It's like we're pulling teeth to score. We're trying Read more

Wyoming plays first game following head coach dismissal

02.09.2011     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
Wyoming at New Mexico -17 O/U 134.5

On Monday, Wyoming fired head coach Heath Schroyer after three and a half seasons in Laramie. The Cowboys have been in steady decline over the past three years and are currently in the midst of a seven-game losing streak. Associated head coach Fred Langley will coach the team the remainder of the campaign. Wyoming's last win came against New Mexico back in early January. They travel to the Pit as 17-point underdogs tonight. The Cowboys have yet to cover a true road game this season (0-6 ATS).

Wyoming's Results Last Three Years
2008-09 19-14 overall, 7-9 SU, 10-6 ATS MWC
2009-10 10-21 overall, 3-13 SU, 8-8 ATS MWC

CBB Betting Alert: Key injuries and suspensions

01.26.2011     09:23 AM     Printer Friendly
A couple of college basketball injuries/suspensions worthy of note.

West Virginia is down to eight scholarship players after Dan Jennings was kicked off the team and Casey Mitchell was suspended indefinitely. Jennings wasn’t much of a contributor but Mitchell was the team’s leading scorer. The Mountaineers are 7-point underdogs at Louisville tonight.

Minnesota senior point guard Al Nolen is out with a broken foot. Nolen missed time earlier this season (five games) so the Gophers have experience without him in the lineup. Nolen doesn’t do much in the way of scoring but he’s a leader and one of the team’s better perimeter defenders. Here is a great article breaking down UM’s potential lineup scenarios for tonight’s tilt against Northwestern.

Mountain West Showdown: San Diego State at BYU

San Diego State at BYU -5 O/U 145.5

The biggest game on Wednesday's card will take place in the Mountain West with San Diego State traveling to BYU. A contrast in style as the Aztecs would prefer to grind things out while the Cougars will look to run at any chance. This is the highest total in the series dating back to 2008. During that span, the Under went 6-2. The road team has won three of the last four. BYU won both meetings last season; 82-68 in Provo and 71-69 in San Diego. The Aztecs have had a full week to prepare for BYU and Jimmer Fredette. Fredette went a combined 19-of-36, 53% from the floor, 9-of-16, 56% from three for 59 points in both contests last year.

“We put in a game plan, yes,” Fisher said, “which obviously involves Fredette in terms of how we want to guard him, who we want to have guard him and all those things. But we’ll continue to work on a Read more
