College Basketball Betting: UNLV and San Diego State tipoff Mountain West play

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV -3.5 at San Diego State O/U 144.5

Early season showdown between UNLV and San Diego State, and the 12th-ranked Rebels will look to reverse the fortunes following five straight losses to San Diego State. UNLV had nearly 10 days of preparation for the conference opener and San Diego State has played six-straight weak opponents since early December.

Fairway Jay: “I like the Rebels to get redemption and push the pace in victory. Transfer Mike Moser is having a terrific season and gives them great strength inside with over 11 rebounds per game. And swingman Chace Stanback is a sharp shooter and also delivering big in his senior season. The Rebels are an experienced and together team and also one of the top 2-point shooting teams in the nation. They are very efficient on offense and Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: PAC-12 ranks behind three mid-major conferences

Article discussing how poor the PAC-12 has been thus far. According to Ken Pom, the PAC-12 is the 9th rated league behind the Missouri Valley, Atlantic-10, and Mountain West.

One NBA scout who demanded anonymity said of the Pac-12, "They ought to play all games at 5:45 because it is, in fact, the JV league."

"It's not that there's less players on the West Coast than before," another NBA scout said. "It's just that UCLA and the Pac-10 aren't hoarding them like they used to."

College Basketball Betting: UConn lacks leadership, struggles to find identity

West Virginia at Connecticut -4.5 O/U 138.5

The return of Jim Calhoun didn't seem to help as UConn dropped its second straight game with a 67-60 loss at Rutgers on Saturday. Calhoun noted that while last year’s team struggled at times, it wasn't because of a lack of effort. This year's squad seems to have a little "championship hangover" and a lack of leadership.

"We struggled at times last year," coach Jim Calhoun said Saturday night after the Huskies' most discouraging loss yet, 67-60 to Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. "But we never struggled like this. This is a different kind of struggle. We're struggling to give our best effort."

Orange Bowl Betting Preview: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Clemson Tigers

Orange Bowl
West Virginia vs. Clemson
Wednesday, 5:30 pm – ESPN
CRIS Opener: Clemson pk O/U 60
CRIS Closer: Clemson -2.5 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Clemson -3.5

Erin Rynning’s Betting Take: The new era of big time college football will be on display in this year’s Orange Bowl with complex, high octane, quick paced offenses.  West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen was known for the offensive attacks he’s assembled at Oklahoma State, Houston and Texas Tech.  The change for West Virginia was radical but they managed set school records across the board in the passing game led by junior quarterback Geno Smith.  Smith launched almost 500 passes, while completing 65% for just under 4,000 yards and a 25/7 TD-to-INT ratio.  The Mountaineers threw the ball 61% of the time and dangerous wide Read more

Idaho Potato Bowl Betting Preview: Utah State Aggies vs. Ohio Bobcats

Idaho Potato Bowl
Utah State vs. Ohio
Saturday, 3:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Utah State -3 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Utah State -1.5 O/U 58

Teddy Covers’ Betting Take: The MAC, as a conference, has been a disaster area in recent bowl seasons, with a money-burning 5-15-1 ATS mark over the last five years. Ohio, in particular, has been a solid contributor to that losing record, with an 0-3 SU/ATS run in bowls under head coach Frank Solich, including a 48-21 wipeout at the hands of Troy last year and a 21-17 loss to Marshall the previous season. It’s surely worth noting that both of those games were lined in a similar spread range as this year’s Idaho Potato Bowl – one game was a pick ‘em, the other was +1.

The Bobcats aren’t in a particularly good spot this year either. Two weeks ago, midway through the fourth quarter, Ohio was Read more

New Mexico Bowl Betting Preview: Temple Owls vs. Wyoming Cowboys

New Mexico Bowl
Temple at Wyoming
Saturday, 11 am PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: Temple -7.5 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: Temple -7 O/U 49
Rob Veno Power Rating: Temple -6.5

Rob Veno’s Betting Take: The excitement level should be sky high for both of these squads. For the Owls, it’s an opportunity to be nationally showcased on ESPN after being snubbed last year despite an 8-4 record. This is a favorable postseason destination for Wyoming after beating Fresno State as a 10-point underdog in the 2009 New Mexico Bowl. The site may lend a slight edge to the Cowboys which play here every other year as part of the Mountain West. It also provides a reasonable distance for their fan base to travel to.

Fundamentally, this game has a pair of crucial matchups which figure to decide not only the side winner but the total as well. The Read more

Handicapping College Football Bowl Games: A look at motivation

12.09.2011     12:40 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a look at the motivational factors for each matchup this college football bowl season. In most cases, the chance to play another game is all these kids and coaches need, but every postseason we see plenty of teams fail to show up.

Temple vs. Wyoming - Both sides should be excited to be in the postseason. The Cowboys are looking to cap off a big turnaround (3-9 to 8-4) while Temple searches for a bowl victory after losing last year to UCLA – the program’s first postseason since 1979.

Utah State vs. Ohio - The Aggies haven't been in the postseason since 1997 so you know they are excited. Ohio meanwhile is 0-3 SU in bowl games under Frank Solich and blew a 20-point second half lead to Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship.

UL-Lafayette vs. San Diego State - Complete motivational mismatch. The Ragin Cajuns' last postseason appearance was 1970 in the Grantland Rice Bowl. They also get to play in their home state. San Diego State meanwhile gets shipped east to face a Sun Belt team? As a favorite no less.

Florida International vs. Marshall - Postseason Read more

College Football Handicapping: Teams potentially playing for exercise

11.30.2011     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The final week of the college football regular season and we take a look at those teams in "playing for exercise" situations. Note that final games (especially at home) can sometimes provide a boost in effort. Also factor in the inflated pointspreads with many of these games projected to be significant mismatches.

UNLV +38.5 at TCU - The Rebels have been halfway competitive at home with wins over Colorado State and Hawaii. They also were tied with San Diego State last week in the third quarter only to allowed 17 unanswered points and miss out on the pointspread cover (+16.5). But back on the road however, where they are on an 11-37 ATS run, it is hard to imagine much of an effort. TCU can clinch the Mountain West title with a win so the Horned Frogs will be at least somewhat motivated. TCU has won the last three games in the series by scores of 48-6, 41-0 and 44-14.

Idaho +20 at Nevada - The Vandals may have given their best effort of the season last week in a demoralizing 49-42 OT home loss to Utah State. Concerns here though for the home side as Nevada saw its WAC title hopes come crashing down with back-to-back Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at West Virginia Mountaineers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh at West Virginia -6.5 O/U 57

The Backyard Brawl always brings back fond memories, as we cashed our biggest outright underdog winner ever in 2007 when Pittsburgh (+29) went to Morgantown and beat No. 2 West Virginia, 13-9. We had a top play 20* Big Drive play on the side and also cashed the under as West Virginia blew its chance to play in the BCS Championship. Last year the Panthers were pounded in Pittsburgh in a 35-10 West Virginia win. The Big East is balanced this year with no team showing superior strength. These are the league’s top two scoring teams and West Virginia is the Big East’s strongest offense averaging 462 ypg in conference play including 361 passing ypg. But Pitt can run the ball and clock with 183 rushing ypg against Big East foes and have the league’s No. 2 pass defense to try and slow what the Mountaineers do best. Two first-year coaches lead their teams in the final edition of the Backyard Brawl, and Pittsburgh Read more

Backyard Brawl Gambling: West Virginia and Pitt try to stay in Big East race

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh at West Virginia -6.5 O/U 57

The Backyard Brawl rivalry commences this weekend in Morgantown with West Virginia playing host to Pittsburgh. Perhaps some bad blood between the two head coaches as Dana Holgorsen accused (and supposedly caught) then Tulsa coach Todd Graham of having his player fake injuries to slow down the Cougars' offense during a 2009 game.

Both teams come in off of bye weeks and are 3-2 in Big East play with two games remaining. Louisville and Rutgers are 4-2 but close out the regular season on the road.

"Yeah, they were cheating," Holgorsen told radio station KGOW-AM in Houston. "We've got some inside information on how they did it."

"It goes back to the coaching thing," Holgorsen said. "There is always a tremendous amount of respect when it comes to coaching Read more
