College Football Pointspread Preview: BYU Cougars at TCU Horned Frogs

10.27.2011     01:28 PM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

BYU at TCU (Friday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opener: TCU -12 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: TCU -13.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno Power Rating: TCU -11

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: I’m not sure I buy into the notion that BYU’s offense is growing. Sure, since the switch to quarterback Riley Nelson the Cougars have enjoyed a nice string of wins and points (41 ppg). But look at that schedule and you’ll notice it’s littered with abysmal defensive teams; San Jose State and Oregon State are tied for 83rd nationally in scoring defense while Idaho State ranks 105th in the FCS. I’d say this team hasn’t been tested in the slightest and any perceived improvement may be premature.

Granted, TCU’s defense looked as bad as any in the country in its Week 1 loss to Baylor.  Quarterback Robert Griffin torched the Horned Frogs and the track Read more

NCAAF Betting Previews: West Virginia at Syracuse, NC State at Virginia

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some game notes, analysis and ATS profiles for your review and interest in this week’s college football action. As always, check injuries, weather, stat profiles and understand the emotional motivation for each contest.

West Virginia -14 at Syracuse O/U 59 (Friday)
West Virginia is on 15-6 ATS run in Big East road games including 5-0 SU/ATS at this site. Visitor has covered six-straight in series. Syracuse is 1-4 ATS this season with its lone cover a fortunate one in OT as touchdown favorites over Wake Forest in Week 1. The Orange upset the Mountaineers last year as a big +13.5 point underdog. Value side may point to Syracuse based on results, but can they slow a WVU offense that has gained at least 480 yards in each of its last five games? The Orange pass defense is currently allowing over 290 passing ypg.

NC State at Virginia -5.5 O/U 52
Value side in this ACC game lies with the Wolfpack, who would have been favored Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: UNLV's Hauck goes with back-up QB vs. Wyoming

UNLV at Wyoming -10.5 O/U 56.5

After showing signs of life with an upset win over Hawaii, UNLV looked absolutely awful in back-to-back blowout losses to Southern Utah and Nevada. In hopes of reenergizing the team, second-year head coach Bobby Hauck announced that Sean Reilly will start at quarterback this weekend at Wyoming. Reilly is in his first year after playing at Saddleback Junior College. He was reportedly outplayed by Caleb Henning during the preseason which probably isn’t a good thing. The good news is Reilly goes up against an extremely soft Wyoming pass defense that allowed 74% pass completions, 230 yards and five touchdowns in last week's 63-19 loss to Utah State. UNLV is now 0-10 SU on the road under Hauck, with an average margin of defeat of 36.6 points.

College Football Handicapping: Red flags for Bowling Green defensive line

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I’m going to focus in this week on some trench play inside the MAC which generally gets overlooked by most college football observers. There has been one very disturbing situation going on that is certainly worth noting and more importantly, applicable for this weekend’s game.

Bowling Green’s defensive line play has been abysmal in allowed 711 rushing yards the past two weeks. The most concerning piece to these miserable performances is that neither of the opponents, West Virginia or Western Michigan, had any semblance of a ground game prior to playing the Falcons.

The Mountaineers were becoming extremely worried about their rushing attack which had only accounted for 16.7% of the team’s total yardage after their first four games. Then, out of the blue, they get a 360-yard effort against BG (7.8 per carry) which was spearheaded by freshman running back Dustin Garrison’s 291 yards. West Virginia gained more rushing yards in that one game than they had in their four previous games combined (306). This result led WVA, their fan base, and the entire college football nation to believe that the Mountaineers’ rushing issues were Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Air Force defensive line main source of team woes

10.12.2011     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego State at Air Force -6 O/U 58.5

We mentioned last week that the loss of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter had an impact on the decline of the unit. Adding to that has been the large number of key injuries. The Falcons typically use a three-man front and all three Week 1 starters are currently out. That is without question the main reason the team ranks dead last nationally in rush defense (235.2 ypg). Head coach Troy Calhoun has been forced to play some freshmen; a rarity as basic training and the complexity of schemes is often too overwhelming. San Diego State ran for 209 yards (7.2 ypc) in last year's 27-25 win. Last week, Notre Dame scored 59 points and averaged 9.2 ypc.

Second half kick-off list

That will wrap up today's action. Thanks for following. Good luck with tonight's games.

(3:45 PT) Remember how Virginia Tech's "easy" schedule was going to lead to a 11-1 or 12-0 record. Hokies down 35-31 to Miami with 2 and change left. When was the last time VT lost two straight home games?

(3:36 PT) Rob Veno recommends Idaho Over 24.5 2nd half.

(3:15 PT) NFL line move alert: Bengals getting hammered, now favored -1 at Jacksonville.

(2:55 PT) Arizona scores two TDs in 8 seconds to cut lead to 30-20 at Oregon State.

(2:50 PT) As just as we say that, McGloin tosses a pick in the end zone. Awful.

(2:43 PT) Penn State opens second half with Boldin, which results in nothing. McGloin, who is 11-of-16, then comes in and all of a sudden the Nittany Lions are moving the football. Makes no sense.

(2:33 PT) Rob Veno recommends Nevada/UNLV Over 28 1st half.

(2:08 PT) Teddy Covers recommends Arizona -2 2nd half.

(2:06 PT) Rob Veno recommends Missouri -3.5 2nd half.

(2:03 PT) Teddy Covers recommends Arizona State -0.5 2nd half.

(2:02 PT) Erin Rynning recommends Penn State Over 21 2nd half.

(2:00 PT) Greatest box score EVER...if you have favorite/over parlay.

(1:52 PT) Central Michigan 15-of-17 passing in first half vs. NC State. 8.3 yards per play. Wolfpack lead 21-17.

(1:49 PT) NFL line move alert: Jets hit fairly hard, down Read more

NCAAF Pointspread Notes: Boise State laying three touchdowns at Fresno

10.07.2011     09:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Boise State -20.5 at Fresno State O/U 58.5

One thing has been clearly established in the Fresno-Boise series of late – the Bulldogs don't fare well on the Smurf Turf (0-5 SU/ATS). At home though, Fresno has been much more competitive, never losing by more than 17 points. Boise still racked up pointspread covers in a majority of those matchups but the prices were considerably different. Two years ago, the Broncos closed -7.5 at Fresno whereas tonight's game is lined as high as three touchdowns.

Fresno State at Boise State
2010: 51-0 Loss (+28.5)
2008: 61-10 Loss (+21.5)
2006: 45-21 Loss (+21.5)
2004: 33-16 Loss (+8.5)
2002: 67-21 Loss (+7.5)

Fresno State vs. Boise State
2009: 51-34 Loss (+7.5)
2007: 34-21 Loss (+2.5)
2005: 27-7 Win (-9)
2003: 31-17 Loss (+9)
2001: 35-30 Loss (-16.5)

NCAAF Betting Tips: UConn secondary not a good matchup vs. West Virginia

10.06.2011     11:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Connecticut at West Virginia -19.5 O/U 56.5

Here's a particular in-game matchup that has the potential to be lopsided. Last week, without key cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson, UConn's secondary was absolutely torched by Western Michigan's passing attack. The Broncos had a trio of receivers combine for 31 catches, 409 yards, and four touchdowns. It is logical to think that if Western Michigan could inflict that type of damage, so can West Virginia, who with each passing week seems more confident with Dana Holgorsen's offense. The inflated line is a clear reflection of UConn's recent struggles, but if the Huskies can't stop the pass, the Mountaineers could put up some monster numbers.

"He's one of our captains for a reason," defensive tackle Kendall Reyes said. "He's obviously an impact player we have on our defense, but Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Air Force defense not the same since DC DeRuyter left

10.05.2011     09:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Air Force at Notre Dame -15 O/U 55.5

During defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter's three seasons at Air Force, the Falcons held their opposition to 20 points or fewer 23 times (59% of their games). Last season, DeRuyter left for Texas A&M and the stop unit immediately took a step back. In 2010, the Falcons allowed over 200 ypg rushing and posted only 14 sacks (28.6 per year under DeRuyter). This season, despite two FCS opponents, the numbers are once again alarming. Navy racked up 466 yards, 31 first downs and held the ball for nearly 41 minutes. Tennessee State, a bottom feeder FCS program, netted 24 points and nearly 400 yards of offense. TCU hung 35 points in three quarters of work. And South Dakota managed 20 points and 368 yards – double the production they got against Wisconsin. All told, Air Force’s rush defense ranks 113th nationally (227.5 ypg) and will be without three defensive starters for this weekend's trip to Notre Dame.

College Football Pointspread News: UNLV tries to rebound after brutal loss

10.05.2011     09:08 AM     Printer Friendly
UNLV at Nevada -20.5 O/U 56

A week after upsetting Hawaii 40-20 as 17-point underdogs, UNLV regressed in a big way with a 41-16 home loss to Southern Utah as 9.5-point favorites. On Saturday, the Rebels travel to in-state rival Nevada as a big underdog. UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck wasn't shy about how much last week's loss hurt. Nevada has owned the series, winning six straight (5-1 ATS). Despite being outgained 516-294, the Rebels did cover (+20.5) last year's meeting thanks to a late fourth quarter touchdown.

"That will never go away," he said. "There are certain ones over the years, both wins and losses, that just hang with you."

"We've had to own up, at least internally, to our last one," he said. "We kind of are getting a feel for who we are, what we are. I think we had a productive week last week in terms of Read more
