College Football Handicapping: UConn names JC transfer starting quarterback

08.14.2017     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
UConn has never been a destination school for quarterbacks. Over the last seven seasons, only once did the Huskies rank inside the top 100 (2015, 88th) in terms of team passer rating. In his second term in Storrs, head coach Randy Edsall is attempting to change that pattern with JuCo transfer David Pindell. Pindell was recently named the team's starter. It's perhaps a good sign considering senior Bryant Shirreffs started the last two seasons. Edsall's teams however have never been prolific passing the football. During his five years at Maryland, the Terps' average team passer ranking was 92nd nationally.

"Just saw the way he's come in and handled the offense," Edsall said. "He's still got work to do, as they all do, but I think it was time. We sat down with the offensive staff and talked and evaluated all the things we had seen. We made the decision, and now we're going to move forward."

College Football Betting News: Florida suspends seven for season opener vs. Michigan

08.14.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
One of the disadvantages of playing an actual game in Week 1 and not some patsy from the Sun Belt is that there's always a chance for some good old fashion offseason suspensions. Florida announced that it will be without the services of seven players including the team's top offensive weapon, wide receiver, Antonio Callaway. Frustrating situation for summer bettors as there was a lot of pro-Gator money. Michigan opened -5 and was bet down to -2.5 before sportsbooks took the game off the board.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement, though he did not elaborate on the reason for their suspension. "Action has been taken they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

College Football Betting Update: Ole Miss suspends two starters, line vs. South Alabama continues to drop

08.03.2017     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly

Adding insult to injury, Ole Miss will be without two defensive starters for its season opener vs. South Alabama.

College Football Gambling: Ole Miss likely in for a world of hurt this season

College Football Handicapping: With new OC, Notre Dame seeks faster tempo

08.02.2017     10:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Not a lot went right for Notre Dame last season. The Irish were probably better than their 4-8 record (4 losses by a field goal or less) but there was rarely a game where both the offense and defense showed up. Head coach Brian Kelly, who is obviously on the hot seat, brought in offensive coordinator Chip Long to spark a unit that is only two years removed from averaging over 7 yards per play. Long served as Memphis' OC last season. Despite losing head coach Justin Fuentes and quarterback Paxton Lynch, the offense actually average slightly more yards per play under Long. News out of camp indicates that Notre Dame will look to play at a much faster tempo this season.

“We have the potential to score in the first two plays,” Adams said Tuesday following Notre Dame’s first practice of the season at Culver Academies. “Obviously as an offense, that’s what you want, to score as fast as you can. We’re conditioned to play fast.”

College Football Betting: Rutgers looks to go more traditional route on offense

08.02.2017     09:19 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In terms of yards per play, no team averaged fewer (4.13) than the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last season. This after posting a respectable 5.61 ypp in 2015. Changes of course were made, the most notable being the somewhat odd hiring of former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill to serve as offensive coordinator. It's hard to label exactly what system Rutgers was attempting to run a season ago. Articles here and here suggest Kill will attempt to go the more traditional route by utilizing the run game and tight ends. There however remain lots of questions as to who will be in charge of taking snaps and blocking up front. The good news is the Scarlet Knights can lose by four touchdowns in their season opener vs. Washington and still cover the pointspread.

When asked about the state of the offensive line, Kill smiled and said, “Talk to me in three weeks (and)

College Football Handicapping: North Carolina attempts to reload entire offense

08.01.2017     09:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
A lot of roster turnover, particularly on offense, for the North Carolina Tar Heels this season. And don't sleep on the loss of defensive coordinator Gene Chizik (resigned). The year prior to Chizik arriving, UNC ranked dead last in the ACC in yards per play allowed in conference play (6.28). Last season, a semi-respectable ninth (5.47 ypp). The Tar Heels open the season as -12.5 home chalk vs. California.

“Never,” he said recently, contemplating the work ahead, both for his coaching staff and his offense. “Not to this extent. They said it was 90-something percent of the offensive production left. I don’t know how many guys have ever done that. So at least nobody that I’ve reached out to. So it’s – we’ll see.”

College Football Betting: UAB Blazers return after two years without a team

07.31.2017     12:47 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Look who's back! After a two-year hideous, UAB has returned. The University axed the program after the 2014 season; a year in which first-year head coach Bill Clark led the squad to a respectable 6-6 record. Clark remains though there’s a ton of things to fix. Here's a good article that essentially breaks down the timeline of events. To no surprise, Clark has spent much of his time trying to find bodies to fill out the roster. The Blazers are still a part of C-USA and open the season vs. FCS Alabama A&M. They also play host to FBS newbie Coastal Carolina.

College Football Handicapping: Coastal Carolina to make FBS debut

07.31.2017     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
There's a new kid on the block in college football with Coastal Carolina making is FBS debut after playing its inaugural season in FCS in 2003. The Chanticleers averaged nearly 11 wins over the past four seasons. Below is where they ranked nationally according to Sagarin. Unfortunately, Coastal will be without head coach Joe Moglia this year as it was announced he will take a medical leave of absence. Coastal, who will participate in the Sun Belt, opens the season at home vs. UMass. The last FBS opponents they faced was South Carolina, a game in which the Gamecocks won 70-10 back in 2013.

Year - Coastal Carolina Sagarin Ranking (notable teams ranked ahead of)
2016 - 101st (ahead of Arizona, Virginia, Illinois)
2015 - 118th (ahead of UNLV, Fresno State, SMU)
2014 - 68th (ahead of Navy, Houston, North Carolina, Texas Tech)
2013 - 96th (head of UNLV, Rutgers, Kentucky, Virginia)
