College Football Betting Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Alabama at Mississippi State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -7 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -7.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: Alabama

Off last week’s win over LSU, Alabama has positioned itself for a berth in the four-team playoffs. There was nothing fraudulent about the 30-16 victory over the Tigers as the Tide dominated every facet of the game: 434-182 total yard edge and 250-54 rushing yard edge. Now they must turn around with a road trip to Starkville to face a Mississippi State squad that has won four straight and afforded a few days of extra time to prepare having played last Thursday.

For starters, MSU's schedule comes up a little light compared to Alabama's. The Bulldogs drew LSU at home (outgained 5.52-4.73 and trailed 21-6 heading into the fourth quarter) and were statistically even against Auburn and Texas A&M (1-1 SU/ATS). The last four weeks they played three of four games at home, two of which against non-power conference foes, and the other two against SEC bottom feeders Kentucky and Missouri.

And I have concerns about Mississippi State's Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Georgia Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers

Georgia at Auburn
Saturday, 9 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Auburn -1.5 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Auburn -1.5 O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Georgia

The Deep South's oldest rivalry will be renewed on Saturday when the Georgia Bulldogs (6-3) take on the Auburn Tigers (5-4). The Bulldogs picked up a 27-3 win over Kentucky last week to become bowl eligible for the 15th time under head coach Mark Richt. Georgia's defense held the Wildcats to 177 yards of total offense while the running back trio of Sony Michal, Terry Godwin, and Keith Marshall picked up over 251 yards on the ground. Perhaps a sign of things to come moving forward as UGA attempted only 19 passes for 90 yards. Original starter Greyson Lambert and backup Brice Ramsey weren’t asked to do much as the Dawgs rushed a season-high in yards and attempts. Expect a similar gameplan this weekend as Auburn ranks near the bottom of the SEC in stopping the run (191.2 ypg allowed).

Meanwhile Auburn sprung the upset over Texas A&M with a 26-10 win in College Station. Backup quarterback Jeremy Johnson played well in relief of the injured Sean White but Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The College Football Playoff circus has begun

11.09.2015     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I haven’t had an appropriate opportunity to rant against the most corrupt organization in sports – the NCAA, making billions off the backs of student athletes without a lick of oversight – in quite some time.  But now that we’re in Playoff Committee time here in November, it’s time to call out the NCAA for this ridiculous atrocity, designed to do one thing and one thing only – make the NCAA more money, by driving up the hype factor of the college football playoff.  You know, the playoff that doesn’t begin until January?  You know, the playoff that has a constantly-hyped national TV show every week, designed to get fat checks from corporate sponsors?   Yeah, that college football playoff!

Can you imagine, even for a minute, if the NFL held a mid-season poll so that a group of high profile bureaucrats, administrators and big name celebrities (does Condoleezza Rice really know the in’s and out’s of college football) could vote on who the top teams were?  Of course you can’t imagine such a thing, because it’s a ludicrous concept.  If these polls never existed, there would be Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: Cook and Golson given OK to play vs. Clemson

11.06.2015     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good news for Florida State backers, Dalvin Cook (ankle) and Everett Golson (concussion) have been cleared to play for Saturday's big ACC showdown at Clemson. Head coach Jimbo Fisher however declined to name Golson the starter after Sean Maguire chucked it around for 348 yards in last week's 45-21 win over Syracuse. Clemson opened as a -12 favorite but following the news of Cook and Golson, the line has been bet down to -10.5.

College Football Betting Preview: Vanderbilt Commodores at Florida Gators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt at Florida
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida -19 O/U 39.5
CRIS Current: Florida -21 O/U 36.5
Recommendation: Florida

If you just look at Vanderbilt's scores you'd immediately think the near three touchdown spread at Florida is simply too high. In SEC play, the Commodores lost to Georgia by 17, Ole Miss by 11, South Carolina by 9 and beat Missouri 10-9. But after seeing Georgia's true colors, acknowledging the poor spot for Ole Miss and uncharacteristically "clean" showing for Vandy (+2 turnover margin), as well as how weak South Carolina and Missouri have been, it's clear that the current line for their trip to Gainesville is at the very least justified.

I grade out the Gators as having one of the top defenses in the country meaning Vanderbilt's pedestrian offense is going to need a lot of magic to top 10 points. And that may be generous considering the Commodores failed to top that mark their last three games against Missouri, South Carolina, and Houston.

The question is can Florida produce enough offense to cover the number? The offense isn't Read more

College Football Handicapping: Markets push Illinois into historically bad spot

11.06.2015     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We need to talk about the Illinois-Purdue pointspread for a minute. To start, the game opened a pick 'em with the Illini taking most of the early money with the line trickling up to -2. The move was understandable as the Illini have the more attractive statistical profile (-0.76 ypp vs. Big Ten) compared to the Boilermakers (-1.57 ypp). But yesterday’s -2 turned quickly into -5 putting Illinos in some rarified air. They've been favored in 10 Big Ten games since 2011 only twice since 2013 and both of which were against Purdue. Their track record in that profile is nothing short of horrific. Check out the results...

2014
-10 vs. Purdue - SU Loss, ATS Loss

2013
-6.5 at Purdue - SU Win, ATS Loss

2012
-2 vs. Indiana - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-3 vs. Penn State - SU Loss, ATS Loss

2011
-9.5 vs. Northwestern - SU Win, ATS Loss
-14 at Indiana - SU Win, ATS Win
-3.5 vs. Ohio State - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-3 at Purdue - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-1 vs. Michigan - SU Loss, ATS Loss
-10 at Minnesota - SU Loss, ATS Loss
