College Football Betting Trends: PAC-12 road teams continue to crush

10.09.2015     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's been The Year of the Road Team in the PAC-12 thus far as visitors have recorded a sick 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS in conference play including Washington's outright win as +17 underdogs at USC last night. All four of Saturday's PAC-12 road teams are catching over a touchdown; three of which +10 or more. Interestingly - and in no way correlated - over the last five years the PAC-12 has by far the lowest homecourt winning percentage (60.2%) of any college basketball power conference according to Ken Pomeroy.

Week 3
Stanford (+9.5) 41 at USC 31

Week 4
Stanford (-14) 42 at Oregon State 24
California (+1) 30 at Washington 24
UCLA (+1) 56 at Arizona 30
Utah (+10) 62 at Oregon 20
USC (-4) 42 at Arizona State

Week 5
Washington State (+16.5) 28 at California 34
Oregon (-6.5) 41 at Colorado 24
Arizona State (+12.5) 38 at UCLA 23
Arizona 17 at Stanford (-12.5) 55

Week 6
Washington (+17) 17 at USC 12
Oregon State at Arizona
Colorado at Arizona State
Washington State at Oregon
California at Utah

College Football Betting Preview: South Carolina Gamecocks at LSU Tigers

South Carolina at LSU
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -18.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: LSU -18.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: LSU

Change in venue as South Carolina’s home tilt against LSU was moved to Baton Rouge due to historical flooding in the Columbia area. For the Gamecocks, there’s a lot of things to think about other than football but on short notice they’ll be faced with the insurmountable task of traveling to one of the toughest venues in the country to face of the toughest teams in the country. Note that the Tigers were -13.5 road chalk prior to the change in venue.

Making matters worse for the Gamecocks is the health of true freshman quarterback Lorenzo Nunez. Nunez has played decent thus far considering the circumstances but after throwing three picks in last week’s loss at Missouri, he certainly needs the reps and hasn’t gotten much of them this week due to an ailing shoulder.  Despite playing a fairly difficult schedule, the Gamecocks are averaging a somewhat respectable 5.39 yards per play. This week's opponent and venue however suggests Read more

College Football Handicapping: Kansas catching +44 at home vs. Baylor

10.07.2015     08:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You'd be hard pressed to ever find a game involving two power conference teams in which the road side was laying over six touchdowns. That's the case this weekend with Baylor headed to Kansas. It's no secret the Jayhawks are bad but with a freshman third-string quarterback slated to start, this has the makings of a bloodbath. Just to give you an idea of how inflated this pointspread is, Kansas was catching +34.5 in last year's meeting in Lawrence and the exact same price in Waco two years ago. This week, the Bears went from -38 on the opener to its current number of -44. Based on the side and total, the score is projected to be around 61-17.

“A lot of it has to do with him knowing where to throw the ball quick and making quick decisions, which will help him out,” KU offensive coordinator Rob Likens said. “We’re going to school him up on that this week.”

“He’s excited about getting his first start,” Beaty said about Willis, who is not available for interviews because of KU’s

College Football Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers at Arizona Wildcats

Oregon State at Arizona
Saturday, 1 pm PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Arizona -10.5 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: Arizona -8.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Arizona

Back-to-back blowout losses has Arizona limping into Saturday's must-win game against Oregon State. The Wildcats are dealing with multiple key injuries most notably quarterback Anu Solomon who is currently listed as questionable with a concussion. But the real problem for the Cats is stopping the opposition as UCLA and Stanford both racked up big yards and big points. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has come out and said that he won't make drastic changes to his defense. Perhaps Saturday's foe, who with a freshman quarterback and limited big play ability, will serve as an opportunity to bounce back.

The handicap in this game comes down to who will win the battle in the trenches. Against Stanford, Oregon State was outgained by 102 total yards and an alarming 325-111 on the ground. The Cardinal averaged 6.8 yards per carry after averaging less than 4 ypc in their previous three games. Michigan racked up 225 yards on the ground against OSU; a 166-yard Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Washington State Cougars at Oregon Ducks

Washington State at Oregon
Saturday, 3 pm PT - PAC-12 Network
CRIS Opener:
Oregon -17 O/U 74
CRIS Current: Oregon -17 O/U 70
Recommendation: Washington State

Last week the Oregon Ducks took control in the second half against Colorado turning a tie game at half into a 41-24 win as they rebounded at least temporarily from the embarrassing 62-20 home loss to the Utah Utes. However, I feel the Washington State Cougars have enough edges and a good enough offense right now to make this a competitive game for a full 60 minutes.

Oregon is on a 0-3 ATS slide at home failing to even sniff pointspread covers in games against Eastern Washington (won by 19 laying -35), Georgia State (won by 33 laying -42.5) and the aforementioned loss to Utah. Washington State is getting very solid quarterback play from Luke Falk who has completed 72.6% of his passes for 1,459 passing yards and a strong 10-2 TD-INT ratio. The ability to move the football through the air is exactly what Oregon has struggled against dating back to last season. In 2013, the Ducks' secondary was one of the best in the country as opposing Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Ohio State Buckeyes

Maryland at Ohio State
Saturday, 9 am PT - Big Ten
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -29.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Ohio State -33 O/U 54
Recommendation: Ohio State

5-0 but 1-4 against the spread, No. 1 ranked Ohio State returns home after slipping past Indiana last week, 34-27. The Buckeyes outgained the Hoosiers by over 100 yards and got 274 yards on the ground from Ezekiel Elliott but three turnovers allowed IU to stick around. Since dismantling Virginia Tech in Week 1 (a win that doesn't look as impressive with the Hokies dropping back-to-back games to East Carolina and Pittsburgh) the Buckeyes have looked disjointed. A lot of their struggles can be blamed on inefficiencies in the red zone. The supposed top-ranked team in the country currently has a 37.5% touchdown rate in the red zone which ranks 121st. It's a far cry from last year's 71.6%. But with as much talent as the Buckeyes have, it's a very correctable problem.

And back at home against Maryland should serve as a prime opportunity to make a correction. The Terps are a complete mess right now with head coach Randy Edsall with one foot out the Read more

DFS sites place ban on employee participation

10.06.2015     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Scramble mode for DFS site FanDuel and DraftKings after word got out various employees were using their ability to access accounts to better position themselves for various contests. As actual sports bettors, it's both comical and concerning to sit back and watch these sites pedal themselves as not only legit but "skill based." It's all bullshit, but on the same token, you want them to succeed to a certain degree with the hope it will eventually lead to nationwide legalized sports betting. Not looking good, is it?

“We’ve heard from users that they would appreciate more clarity about the rules for this issue. In the interim, while the industry works to develop and release a more detailed policy, DraftKings and FanDuel have decided to prohibit employees from participating in online fantasy sports contests for money.”

College Football Betting Preview: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Clemson Tigers

Georgia Tech at Clemson
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Clemson -8.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Clemson -6.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech's season is heading in the wrong direction after three straight losses including last week's meltdown against North Carolina. There are concerns for the Yellow Jackets on both sides of the football. With a shaky offensive line and limited playmakers, Tech produced a pedestrian 4.6 yards per play against Notre Dame, Duke, and North Carolina. And on the flip side, the defense allowed 6.4 ypp during that span. Perhaps the most glaring stat, one that Tech has thrived at under Paul Johnson, is third down conversions. The offense is built to be put in 3rd and short situations where it can pick up easy first downs and thus control the clock. Last season, the Yellow Jackets converted on 58% of their third downs which was the best mark in the country by over 5%. This season they are at 35% and an even worse 28% against the aforementioned three teams. That speaks volumes about Tech's lack of offensive weaponry.

Clemson (4-0) meanwhile is Read more
