College Football Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines

Michigan State at Michigan
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan -6.5 O/U 41
CRIS Current: Michigan -7.5 O/U 42
Recommendation: Michigan State

This is a fascinating game; a contest where the contrasts between Las Vegas and the mainstream college football world are on full display for everyone to see.  The pointspread itself has been a major issue in social media discussion this week, with the Wolverines getting bet up as high as -8.5 before some buyback on the Spartans, driving the line back down to the current -7.5 number as I write this on Thursday morning.  Of course, Michigan State is ranked at #4 in the Coaches Poll, while Michigan is #14, giving ill-informed TV commentators the right to call it an upset if Michigan wins the game – even if the Wolverines don’t cover the spread.

Last week at this time, the lookahead line at the Westgate Superbook here in Vegas for Michigan State – Michigan was sitting at pick ‘em.  Then Michigan did what they’ve been doing all year – blowing out foes in bad spots.  And Michigan State did Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Alabama Crimson Tide at Texas A&M Aggies

Alabama at Texas A&M
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -4 O/U 47
CRIS Current: Alabama -4 O/U 54
Recommendation: Texas A&M

We are now three years removed from “Lightning in a bottle in Tuscaloosa”, which showcased Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M who welcomed themselves into the SEC by going into Tuscaloosa and coming away with the outright win as two touchdown underdogs. Since the 2013 upset, Alabama has won two straight including last year’s 59-0 beat down. The 2015 edition of Kevin Sumlin’s team is on a much different trajectory then last year’s team. Texas A&M is off to a 5-0 start this year behind their high flying offense led by quarterback Kyle Allen. The Aggies are averaging 480 ypg and 6.5 ypp including 680 yards in their last two games vs. the SEC West’s Mississippi State and Arkansas.  The run game also looks improved at 188 ypg. They aren’t picking up the huge chunks of yards they did during the Manziel era but they are committed to being balanced and it paid off last week as the Aggies ran the ball 45 times for 194 Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals at Florida State Seminoles

Louisville at Florida State
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -7.5 O/U 46
CRIS Current: Florida State -7 OU 46
Recommendation: Over

Crucial matchup in regards to the ACC’s Atlantic Division standings as Florida State (2-0) could eliminate Louisville (1-1) from ACC Championship Game contention with a win here. Though they remain unbeaten at 5-0 this season, the Seminoles have been unimpressive against the line posting a 2-3 ATS mark despite playing a schedule that has been less than taxing. Strength of schedule comparison favors Louisville as my power ratings show the Cards’ average opponent strength to be a substantial 10.1 points better than that of FSU. That number becomes even more relevant when you see that unlike Florida State, Louisville has been very successful versus the number going 4-1. First glance suggests a mechanical play on the under-valued team against the somewhat inflated one but this mid-week number of Florida State -7 indicates oddsmakers have made an adjustment (opened FSU -7.5) and early money helped correct it even more. Power ratings show the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

USC at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -4 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -6.5 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Over

The USC Trojans will be looking to take the first step in turning the page on the Steve Sarkisian era as they travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame in this annual rivalry battle. USC fired Sarkisian this past week and stepping in for the second time as interim head coach will be Clay Helton who did the same when Ed Orgeron left the team after the 2013 regular season. From multiple accounts, the players have shown positive support for Helton moving forward. Kenny Bigelow: "We have a lot of older guys here now that are able and old enough and mature enough to step up and get everybody rallied behind Coach Helton as we go forward." Connor Spears: "We all kind of know what we have to do, and I think Helton's going to do a tremendous job of keeping us in line and making sure we perform."

USC’s last game was an ugly 17-12 loss to Washington last Thursday night as double-digit favorites. It’s unclear just how Read more

College Football Handicapping: Oregon State's defense is a total mess

10.14.2015     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Three games, 918 yards, and 6.0 ypc is what Oregon State allowed on the ground to Michigan, Stanford, and Arizona. The good news is Beavers' offensive coordinator Kalani Sitake said, "...it can't get any worse."

Following last week's blowout loss to Arizona, Sitake said it would be impossible to simplify the defense more than it already has.

Saturday's opponent, Washington State, isn't going to run for 300 yards but it’ll assuredly be able to move the ball via the pass against an OSU team that has a hard time applying pressure on the quarterback and making open field tackles.

The total was bet up from 55.5 to 59.5.

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Pittsburgh at Clemson
Saturday, 9:30 am PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Georgia Tech -2.5 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Georgia Tech -3 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

It's only mid-October and "giving up" on teams can be a quick way to miss out on potential winners. Not only is there plenty of time for a team to right the ship but pointspreads are being adjusted on a weekly basis. Take Georgia Tech, who after four straight losses, finds itself laying a field goal against Pittsburgh. Two weeks ago, against a similarly power rated team, the Yellow Jackets were laying -6.5 against North Carolina. The problem though is while you want to remain proactive and leave the door open for a turnaround, everything about this Georgia Tech team screams it isn't coming anytime soon.

Yes, three of Tech's losses came on the road but it's the way in which they lost that has me most concerned. Despite Clemson being in a potential flat spot off its big win over Notre Dame, the Tigers outgained the Yellow Jackets 7.26-4.11 yards per play. The week prior, GT jumped out to a 21-0 lead on North Carolina but I'm more Read more
