Sportsmemo's College Football Week 9 Betting Recap

10.29.2012     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
By the betting numbers...College Football Week 9 (see results below). Note that we use CRIS's opening and closing lines. We do not include games involving FCS teams.

Based on closing lines…

Home teams were the stronger bet at 30-26 ATS (Road teams are 226-208 ATS YTD). There was one neutral site game (Florida vs. Georgia). We graded Arkansas' game in Little Rock as a home game. There was one push (Louisville -3 vs. Cincinnati).

Favorites had the edge this week at 30-27 ATS (Underdogs are 226-214 ATS YTD). There was one push (Louisville -3 vs. Cincinnati).

Double-digits favorites went 12-10 ATS (DD underdogs are 110-102 ATS YTD).

Totals went 34-24 Over/Under (228-224-3 O/U YTD).

Beating the Market: If you bet the opening number on a team that moved three points or more based on the closing line (i.e. Rice +2) you went: 4-1 ATS (52-29 ATS YTD)

Chasing the Market: If you bet the closing number on a team that moved three points or more (i.e. Rice -2.5) you went: 4-1 ATS (42-36-3 ATS YTD).

Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" 32 times but "incorrect" 21 times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." Note that in 5 games, the game opened and closed at the same number.

Parlay combo breakdown (57 games) (436 games YTD)
Favorite-Over: 19 (117 YTD)
Favorite-Under: 11 (95 YTD)
Underdog-Over: 14 (101 YTD)
Underdog-Under: 13 (123 YTD)

Note that we did not include pick ‘em lines and pushes in our parlay Read more

College Football Handicapping: UNLV's Sherry expected to start behind banged up o-line

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV at San Diego State -18 O/U 57

UNLV's Nick Sherry (back) is expected to start Saturday's game at San Diego State. It doesn't sound like he is 100% and he'll be working behind an injury-riddled offensive line.

“Every week it seems like somebody’s dealing with something,” said senior tackle Yusef Rodgers, who this week is listed as doubtful with a leg injury.

“It is kind of discouraging because we had high hopes,” Rodgers said of the offensive line. “We feel like with what we’ve got, we’re still doing all right.”

College Football ATS Trends: Oregon laying monster price of -47 vs. Colorado

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado at Oregon -47 O/U 67.5

Out of curiosity, we looked up the betting results of college football conference games lined -45 or higher. Since 1986, it has occurred 26 times which underdogs 15-10-1 ATS. We've seen three such instances over the last four years with the favorite (USC, Boise State twice) obviously winning outright but failing to cover. This weekend, Oregon had been bet up from -45.5 to -47 against Colorado.

College Football Gambling Preview: Mississippi State Bulldogs at Alabama Crimson Tide

CRIS Current: Alabama -24 O/U 46.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Alabama -24

We have yet another huge SEC matchup this week, with top-ranked Alabama hosting the unbeaten Mississippi State Bulldogs. Unlike the last few weeks, where we saw short-lined matchups between Florida- LSU, South Carolina-LSU, Florida-South Carolina, Alabama is laying a hefty -24. Clearly, Mississippi State is not thought of as a “real” contender in the SEC despite its unblemished record. This biggest reason for this is their lack of quality wins due to a fairly soft schedle. The Bulldogs’ most impressive win came at home against Tennessee – and Alabama just dismantled the Vols in Knoxville, 44-13, last week.

CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -9 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -7 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma State -9

Oklahoma State has some quarterback concerns entering Saturday’s Big XII showdown against TCU. Backup J.W. Walsh, who has been starting for injured starter Wes Lunt, is now out for the rest of the year with a knee injury. Walsh had played in six games and gone 102-of-154 passing for 1,467 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lunt is currently listed as probable to return for this game from his own injury but he still may not be quite at 100% yet.

TCU’s defense, while not being the same shutdown unit we’ve seen from previous Gary Patterson squads, still has better numbers across the board than Oklahoma State. TCU is 17th in the nation in total yards allowed at 313 per game and Read more
