MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Miami Marlins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Kennedy) at Miami (Eovaldi) -120 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Nathan Eovaldi has the tools to be a better than average National League starter. His velocity sits in the mid-90's and everything about his progression over the last few years suggests he's sitting on a solid season. In Eovaldi's first start he looked the part as he fanned six and allowed only two runs in a win over Colorado. Ian Kennedy made the wise choice in going to San Diego where he should be able to get by with marginal stuff and guts. But in his first start of the season I noticed that his velocity was way up from last year with his average fastball was around 92. Kennedy knows how to pitch and that extra mph can make a huge difference, especially when throw off of his off-speed stuff. As mentioned in yesterday's Free Play winner (SD/MIA under), the Padres have been offensively inept with only 8 runs in five games. Two low profile yet effective starters and the early start getaway day environment points us Read more

San Diego (Cashner) at Miami (Fernandez) -145 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Under

Two premium arms and sub-par offenses has us looking at the under in tonight's San Diego-Miami matchup. Both Andrew Cashner and Jose Fernandez looked sharp is their respective season debuts. Cashner allowed just four hits and a run vs. the Dodgers while Fernandez cruised past Colorado with nine punch outs and one run in six innings. The Padres offense hasn't exactly hit the ground running with 2, 1, 2, and 3 run efforts its first four games – and that includes games against middle-tier starters Dan Haren and Tom Koehler. The Marlins meanwhile have had success at the plate (7 runs per game) but the level of competition steps way up tonight after facing Erin Stults, Franklin Morales, and Jordan Lyles the last three nights. We know Fernandez is special but Cashner isn't far behind and in my opinion is sitting on a big season. Low total at 6.5 but one still worth playing under.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Saunders) at Tampa Bay (Odorizzi) -143 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Tampa

Tampa's Jake Odorizzi has the chance to chance to be a nice under-the-radar pitcher this season. He's a young arm who last season was regarded as the Rays' No. 1 prospect – an impressive feat given the strong nature of this organization top to bottom. There is a trust factor with Tampa pitchers in that they are all well coached and well prepared and I expect this kid to hit the ground running. Meanwhile, Texas' Joe Saunders continues to find starting gigs but there are plenty of signs that indicate he's going to struggle this season. Better suited for a West Coast National League team, Saunders posted an alarming 5.26 ERA for Seattle last season. He not only remains in the AL but must pitch in Texas and for tonight against one of the better platoon squads in the league. During the spring Saunders was dreadful and rumblings of some early season "dead arm" have surfaced. Let's lay the moderate price Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: UConn Huskies vs. Michigan State Spartans

03.30.2014     07:06 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn +5.5 vs. Michigan State O/U 139
Recommendation: UConn

Outside of the first 10 minutes of the game in which Michigan State was averaging a ridiculous 1.45 points per possession, the Spartans had a very difficult time not only scoring on Virginia but pulling away hence the final two-point margin. UConn doesn't have UVA's defensive acumen but this team is guarding and rebounding much better than their overall season numbers show. And like UVA's x-factor of tremendous defense, UConn's Ryan Boatright and Shabazz Napier provide the key to keeping within striking distance of the Spartans. I also like the emphasis UConn has placed on getting to the free throw line with 70 attempts and 86% makes in its three NCAA Tournament games thus far. Michigan State has also been effective at getting to and knocking down free throws but I'm looking for aspects in which the Huskies can potentially match or outperform the favorite. Size, athleticism, offense, and defense – the Spartans have some advantages but 5.5 points more than the Huskies? Sagarin and Ken Pom both have this game less than -3 while oddsmakers and the betting markets feel present MSU is far Read more
