College Football Betting Preview: Tennessee Volunteers vs. NC State Wolfpack

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee vs. NC State
Brent Crow's Recommendation:
NC State
Friday, 4:30 pm PT @ Atlanta - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -2.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: Tennessee -3 (-115) O/U 52.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: NC State PK

Tennessee fans are looking for some progress in year three of the Derek Dooley era and with 18 starters back from a 5-7 team, they should get their wish. Whether the Vols win enough games to keep Dooley off the hot seat remains to be seen, however. Tennessee does have a chance to go to a nice bowl game if they can stay healthy, most notably quarterback Tyler Bray who is primed for a big showing. In just 12 starts spanning two seasons, Bray has thrown 35 TDs and 16 INTs. A full season will have him near 30 TD passes and 3,000 yards and that should result in eight or nine wins for this team. Justin Hunter, who returns from injury, is poised to be the recipient of most of Bray’s Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Michigan vs. Alabama
Teddy Covers' Recommendation:
Alabama
Saturday, 5 pm PT @ Arlington, Texas - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -11 O/U 46
CRIS Current: Alabama -14 O/U 46.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Alabama -15

Michigan enjoyed one heck of a first season for Brady Hoke, finishing their 11-win season with a thrilling overtime victory over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.  But it’s not going to be an easy task for the Wolverines to repeat that level of performance in 2012.  Michigan suffered significant graduation losses on both the offensive and defensive lines; bad news for ultra-hyped senior quarterback Denard Robinson.

Nor can the Wolverines expect to win every close game like they did last year; undefeated in games decided by a touchdown or less.  And make no mistake about it – this is a step up in class game for the Wolverines.  Michigan’s last Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: Miami (FL) Hurricanes at Boston College Eagles

Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Miami -2 O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: Miami -2 O/U 44
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Boston College -2.5

The Miami Hurricanes could not qualify for a bowl game in head coach Al Golden’s first season due to a self-imposed ban but that changes as they enter 2012. Miami went just 6-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play but did manage a 7-5 ATS mark. The Hurricanes dealt with numerous player suspensions and while that stunted the development of the team, it did give other players valuable experience. That’s especially important considering the fact Miami is replacing seven starters on offense. Junior quarterback Stephen Morris is set to take over as the starter. He will replace Jacory Harris who left the Hurricanes as the second-leading passer in school history. Morris saw action in four Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Hawaii Warriors at USC Trojans

Hawaii at USC
Andrew Lange’s Recommendation:

Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
USC -37 O/U 64
CRIS Current: USC -42 O/U 62.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -34

Roll through USC's scores last year and you'll notice that in games in which the Trojans won by a comfortable margin, none topped 60 points. In blowout victories over UCLA, Washington, Colorado, Cal and Syracuse, USC jumped out to first half leads of 29-0, 23-3, 28-10, 20-0 and 17-3. They often put the game out of reach in the third quarter and never scored more than a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Keep in mind that was with a defense that was slightly above average by PAC-12 standards. This year's unit is projected to be much stronger.

Hawaii is noted for not having much of a defense and with only four returning starters, if USC wanted to score 50+, it probably could. But there is an interesting storyline here with Read more

College Football Gambling Trends: How team fare without a bye week

08.29.2012     06:42 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Revisiting a blog from last year that tracked the results of college football teams without a bye week during the regular season. The theory is that these teams will eventually wear down both physically and mentally. The results (last three games SU and ATS) aren’t mind-blowing, but the 37% SU winning percentage does stands out. Note that in 2009, virtually the entire Big Ten didn’t have a bye so the numbers are somewhat skewed with “none bye teams” often playing one another. If you completely eliminate the ’09 Big Ten, the overall numbers are even stronger at 23-49 SU and 30-41-1 ATS.

Like most of our studies, we aren’t necessarily looking for a formula to bet blind – they rarely if ever exist. Rather, we find schedule situations that can put teams at an advantage or disadvantage. In the case of not having a bye week, it certainly isn’t helpful and a factor worth adding to your handicap.

Some schools (marked with asterisks) had their bye in Week 1 and played continuously for the remainder of the season. We included them because it really doesn’t serve as an advantage.

This year, California, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Oakland A's at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Anderson) -135 at Cleveland O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

When teams have nothing to play for and have essentially quit on the season, fundamental and situational hitting take a back seat to just trying to yank it out of the park. During their August swoon (5-19) the Cleveland Indians have been a punch line for poor hitting. In 24 games, they've walked only 54 times and struck out a whopping 173 times. It has resulted in a horrific .293 on-base percentage. And tonight, they are a difficult spot having to face a lefty who throws strikes in Oakland's Brett Anderson. Anderson looked very impressive in his first start back from the DL, holding Minnesota scoreless through seven innings. Opposing him will be Roberto Hernandez who actually threw pretty well in his last start, allowing just one run before wearing down in the sixth inning in Seattle. Oddsmakers have adjusted to Cleveland's poor hitting ways, but I still see value in playing tonight's game under 8.
