College Football Handicapping: Analyzing SEC Bye Weeks

07.24.2015     09:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the ultra-competitive SEC, a well or poorly placed bye week can have a big impact on a team's season. Your opponents' bye week can also play a factor back in 2010 we pointed out that Alabama really got the shaft with nearly its entire slate having a bye week before playing the Crimson Tide.

Lets take a look at the entire conference and analyze the potential impact of each squad's bye week.

SEC EAST
Florida
Bye Week: October 24
Prior Game: at LSU
Upcoming Game: at Georgia
Analysis: Per usual, the Gators get a week off before the World's Largest Cocktail Party. It also breaks up a tough stretch of five straight league games, including three on the road. The bad news is Georgia also comes in off a bye.

Kentucky
Bye Week: October 10
Prior Game: vs. Eastern Kentucky
Upcoming Game: (Thu) vs. Auburn
Analysis: Cats with one of the earliest bye weeks in Read more

CFL Handicapper Free Play: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Eskimos

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Winnipeg +6 at Edmonton O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a big 20* CFL Game Of The Month winner last week on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their spread covering 26-25 loss to Calgary as +9 road dogs. We’ll go that route this week as Winnipeg is a perfect 2-0 ATS on the road this season cashing tickets in the underdog role both times. The Blue Bombers appear to have the better quarterback in this matchup with Drew Willy playing behind an improved offensive line. Winnipeg’s signal caller has a strong 77% completion rate with 5 TDs and 2 INTs. Those numbers pale in comparison to Edmonton’s Matt Nichols who, despite winning his first two starts, has only completed 51.7% of his passes with 4 TDs and 5 INTs. Nichols has been helped in a big way by a very solid ground game with the likes of Kendial Lawrence and Shakir Bell. Winnipeg’s defense really only surrendered 18 points last week as one of the Calgary TDs (followed by a successful 2-point conversion) was a blocked punt returned for a TD. And another of the Calgary’s TDs came after the Stamps got great field position following a kick return fumble Read more

College Football Betting: Texas Tech brings in yet another new defensive coordinator

07.23.2015     08:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In sticking with our fast offense, bad defense, new coordinator theme, Texas Tech welcomes first-year DC David Gibbs the program's sixth DC since 2009. Gibbs spent the past two seasons at Houston where his stop units forced an incredible 73 turnovers. To compare, the Red Raiders gained only 34 turnovers during the span. TTU's defense was historically bad last season having allowed 45+ points on five occasions including 82 to TCU. Some of the blame can be placed on Kingsbury's offense which obviously plays ultra-fast and over the last two seasons coughed up the football a whopping 61 times. Still, there weren't many teams as incompetent when it came to stopping the opposition (512.7 ypg allowed).

"We knew that he had the track record, had the credibility coming in," Kingsbury said.

College Football Betting: Summer pointspreads offer varying opinions

07.10.2015     09:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some noteworthy opinions on Week 1's matchup between Purdue and Marshall. When it comes to posting a midsummer lines, a vast majority is based on last year's results, this year's returnees, and whether or not your team has a quarterback with experience. In the case of the Thundering Herd, they return only 12 starters and lost quarterback Rakeem Cato (3,903 yards, 40 TDs, 13 INTs) and wide receiver Tommy Shuler (92 catches, 1,138 yards). Marshall won 13 games with its only loss coming in overtime vs. Western Kentucky. Purdue meanwhile returns 18 starters but that is perhaps not a good thing as the Boilermakers won only three games last season and suffered a 21-point to Central Michigan at home.

As for the Week 1's pointspread, check out the varying opinion:

BetOnline opened Purdue as a -2.5 road favorite but a flood of Marshall money had the Herd -4 as of earlier this week. Las Vegas' Stratosphere opened the game Marshall -4. Cantor had a far different opinion, opening the Herd as -10 home favorites. Some Purdue money drove the line down to its current price of -7.5 while BetOnline adjusted its line to -6.5.

NFL Gambling: Westgate SuperContest announces changes for 2015

07.03.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Westgate SuperBook announced some changes for the upcoming 2015 NFL SuperContest. One of which will be the top 50 entrants taking home cash.

"The SuperContest is more popular than ever and we expect another record turnout," Kornegay said. "It used to be that only those in Vegas and those really connected to the industry here knew about the contest and that you could enter from out of state. The more mainstream media like people on ESPN have talked about it and with more people learning about the contest through social media, that has led to these record fields. ... We don't know how big it can get."

IRS seeks tax form on winnings of $600

07.02.2015     08:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Filling out a tax form when you hit a royal flush on a video poker machine is mildly annoying. It's about to get worse. The IRS is proposing that the winnings limit be dropped from its current mark of $1200 to a mere $600.

"I think it would have a big effect on the overall experience for slot players, as it's very common to have jackpots over $600, and now they'll actually have to stop play and wait for the attendant to come over," said Chad Beynon, who covers gaming stocks for Macquarie.

"That does a few things. First of all, it's just a pause in the game that causes people to lose their momentum and maybe decide to go home," he added. "Second, people want to walk away after what they consider to be a big jackpot, and whereas before they would have played a couple more hours and not left until they hit a bigger jackpot, this is kind of the government telling you that you just won a lot of money."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Mini-Camp Betting News

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All 32 NFL teams have concluded their OTA’s (organized team activities) and mini-camps over the past few weeks.  There’s nothing else on the horizon for the NFL before the start of training camps in mid-July.  Therefore, it’s time for bettors and fans alike to fixate on the news trickling out of those mini-camps over the last few weeks.  Here are half a dozen such reports, with teams listed in alphabetical order and information coming from local sources.

Arizona Cardinals - Arizona was an elite team with Carson Palmer behind center last year.  When Palmer got hurt, they were still a pretty good team until Drew Stanton got hurt as well.  Once Arizona was down to a third stringer at quarterback, the back end of the season was ugly as they closed out with a 2-5 stretch, culminating in a blowout to Carolina in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Both Palmer and Stanton fully participated in mini-camp, with Palmer entering the new season as the clear starter, even at 35 years old and coming off his second ACL surgery.  Palmer wowed observers at mini-camp, looking extremely sharp in 11-on-11 Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Francisco Giants at Seattle Mariners

San Francisco (Vogelsong) at Seattle (Montgomery) -140 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Seattle

The Giants lineup is ice cold once again.  They were shut out last night, the fifth time in their last six games that San Francisco has been held to two runs or less.  We saw similar offensive struggles for the Giants when lineup sparkplug Hunter Pence was on the DL in April.  His second trip to the DL has been equally disastrous for this slumping lineup.  And with Aoki slumping at the top of the batting order as well, we can expect continued struggles for the Giants offensively.

That’s bad news against an unfamiliar lefty, as Mike Montgomery takes the hill for Seattle today.  Each of Montgomery’s first three big league starts has been strong, allowing only four runs in 19 innings of work.  The former first round pick was dealt to Seattle this past offseason; a guy who ranked among the Top 20 prospects in baseball earlier in his minor league career.  Behind him, Seattle’s bullpen is rested and ready following another gem from King Felix last night.

And it’s not hard to make a case for Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Curious Case of the Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s not hard to predict which NFL teams are going to be the betting favorites coming into the campaign.  Look no further than the NFL Season Win Totals markets.  Just about all of the top teams – teams lined at nine wins or higher – have one commonality.  In a quarterback’s league, they all have top tier quarterbacks.

Baltimore has Joe Flacco.  Dallas has Tony Romo.  Denver has Peyton Manning.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.  Indianapolis has Andrew Luck.  New England has Tom Brady.  New Orleans has Drew Brees.  Seattle has Russell Wilson.  That’s eight of the ten teams that are lined at 9 wins or higher this year; all squad with elite level quarterbacks.  Miami, with the promising Ryan Tannehill firmly entrenched as the starting QB, is lined at nine wins in many locations as well (8.5 with juice to the over in others).

And then there’s Philadelphia, lined at 9.5 wins in most locations.  The Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez battling for the starting job.  With Bradford – their big offseason pickup and the former #1 overall draft choice from 2010 Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati (Lorenzen) at Chicago (Wada) -145 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

I don’t trust Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada; still winless through his first four starts.  Wada hasn’t finished the sixth inning in any of those outings, and he’s coming off a particularly poor showing in Washington, allowing eleven baserunners while recording only eleven outs against the Nationals.  The Reds lineup is in their best current form of the season, scoring four runs or more in twelve of their last thirteen ballgames, including 22 runs over their last three ballgames. Even with Zack Cosart on the DL and Billy Hamilton a question mark for tonight – hence the move towards the Under in early betting action this morning – the Reds are still primed to put some crooked numbers on the scoreboard at Wrigley this evening.  And let’s not forget that the Cubs spotty bullpen behind Wada; certainly not a unit of strength against the Reds hot hitting bats. Cincinnati’s bullpen in front of closer Aroldis Chapman has actually pitched fairly well over the last week.  But this hasn’t been a reliable pen for any extended Read more
