A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: A trip down Super Bowl memory lane

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On the one hand, the Super Bowl is just another game for a professional bettor.  On the other hand, the Super Bowl has two major differences.  First and foremost are the prop bets; quite literally hundreds of wagering opportunities that allow bettors to wager from everything on the coin toss and the length of the national anthem to whether Russell Wilson will throw more touchdown passes than Manchester United will score goals on Super Bowl Sunday.  I’ll write about those next week.

The other biggest difference between Super Bowls and other games?  Simple – the Super Bowls stand out in our memories; every one of them.  I’ve been in Vegas since the 1998 football season, and I can tell you where I watched every Super Bowl, what the pointspread was and who covered. Thank you in advance for indulging me a brief trip down memory lane.

My first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was when the Broncos faced the Falcons as favorites of about a TD back in January 1999.  I watched the game in the stadium seating at the Imperial Palace racebook.  My handicap was simple, thinking Denver had a big edge having played in (and beaten) the Read more

NFC Championship Betting Recap: Seattle snags win and cover over San Francisco

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

A very evenly played battle came right down to the final possession. San Francisco got within striking distance for the game-winning touchdown. But, a stellar defensive play from Seattle forced an interception, and sent the Seahawks to the Super Bowl to face the Denver Broncos.

Seattle (-4) 23, San Francisco 17
S. Fran: 308 yards, 5.7 per-play, 3 turnovers, 27% third downs
Seattle: 308 yards, 5.3 per-play, 1 turnovers, 36% third downs

Other Numbers
San Francisco: 161 rush, 14-24-2-147 passing, 14 drive points, 21 stat score, 25 sloppiness
Seattle: 115 rush, 16-25-0-193 passing, 17 drive points, 19 stat score, 14 sloppiness

That 308-308 dead heat in yardage tells you how even the flow of the game was. Stat score was right on the money in terms of total points. But, the turnover disadvantage kept San Francisco from getting quite where they were supposed to. Turnovers and sloppiness are a bit misleading because Seattle had a lost fumble that Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Iowa Hawkeyes

Minnesota +9.5 at Iowa O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

Minnesota has played three true road games, compiling a 2-1 record both straight up and against the spread. The Gophers won 74-59 at Richmond and 68-65 at Penn State. The only road setback for Richard Pitino's squad came at Breslin Center in East Lansing on Jan. 11. Minnesota took on Michigan St. as a 10.5-point underdog and led by a 41-36 count at intermission. The Gophers led by as many as 10 in the second half, only to go 13 minutes without making a shot from the field. Nevertheless, they rallied from a six-point deficit with more than two minutes remaining to force overtime. But Minnesota would fall apart in the extra session. In fact, Michigan State outscored the Gophers 16-4 in OT to pull out an improbable spread cover.

The point is that Minnesota should be 3-0 ATS on the road. This afternoon the Gophers take on an Iowa team coming off a big win. Although the Hawkeyes have had a solid week to get ready for their Big Ten rival, they could possibly fall into a letdown scenario here. Minnesota beat Ohio State on Thursday for a big win, but it has had two days to move past Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic

Charlotte -1 at Orlando O/U 190
Recommendation: Charlotte

Charlotte’s goal heading into the season was to make the playoffs following the signing of Al Jefferson. Jefferson was a big investment for the Bobcats, and while highly questionable, with a $41 million three-year deal on the books tanking wasn’t going to be an option. They actually hired a good coach this time around in Steve Clifford who has gotten the team to pay attention to details on the defensive end of the floor. Everything was falling into place as Charlotte owned a solid 14-15 record around the holidays but the schedule stepped up, including a trip out west, and they dropped 9 of their last 11 games. But they’ve had an opportunity to catch their breath and I feel like they’ll be able to regroup for tonight’s contest. Meanwhile, the Magic are a flat-out poorly coached, bad basketball team. They own a 10-29 record, and there’s no doubt this team doesn’t really care about wins this Read more

NFL Handicapping: NFC and AFC Championship Betting Notes

Back as promised to run the regular season drive point averages in matchup order. Will provide a few additional notes as well. The numbers you see below are from the regular season. I’ll make separate comments about what’s happened so far within the small sample size of the playoffs.

Drive points are those scored and allowed on drives of 60 yards or more, trying to get the best possible read on “true” offense and defense not polluted by cheap scoring. The first set of parenthesis shows strength of schedule rankings according to Jeff Sagarin of USA Today, and then Football Outsiders (in that order). The second set of parenthesis shows turnover differential from the regular season.

AFC Championship
New England: 15.4 on offense, 12.2 on defense (21-18 schedule) (+9 turnovers)
Denver: 21.9 on offense, 14.4 on defense (24-31 schedule) (even turnovers)

A little football feng shui there in the schedule rankings. Sagarin has them Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Pittsburgh -7.5 at Georgia Tech O/U 131
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

Pitt has brought their Big East style of blue collar defensive effort to the ACC, and thusfar, their ACC opponents have not reacted well.  And the Panthers' extended ATS losing streak – they failed to cover a single pointspread as favorites in their six lined games in December – has left them as a relatively undervalued commodity.

Put those two factors together and you can understand why I’ve got a big ‘buy’ sign on Jamie Dixon’s squad right now.  Let me start with their defense, holding foes to less than 58 points per game on 37% shooting over their last five games.  NC State, Maryland and Wake Forest – all longtime ACC squads – have all been completely shut down against the Panthers stout D.  I’m not expecting a Yellow Jackets squad that has struggled repeatedly when stepping up in class (0-5 SU and ATS at +2.5 or higher) to have an easier time.

Meanwhile, the Panthers offense has exploded this year, raking in the Top 10 nationally in assists per possession, Read more

NHL Gambling Free Pick: New York Islanders at Florida Panthers

NY Islanders -110 at Florida O/U 5.5
Recommendation: New York

Don’t look now, but the New York Islanders are one of the hottest teams in the NHL.  Winners of four straight and an 8-2 record in their last 10 games, the Islanders are brimming with confidence.  A late game come-from-behind win against the Dallas Stars Sunday night gave the Islanders their seventh straight road win.  They now head to Florida looking to extend that streak and build on what has become a very young and exciting lineup.

The Islanders have been a team that runs hot with their defense.  They are always going to be able to score goals, but their defense and goaltending has always held this team back.  But lately we’ve seen good things out of the Islanders no matter who has been in net, and it seems as if the team is buying into a more disciplined defensive approach.

''We're competing. We're defending a little better,'' Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. ''Playing more within the team concept. I think when you can utilize your four lines that we do, a lot of guys the minutes are Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

01.13.2014     12:18 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Monmouth Hawks at Canisius Golden Griffins

Monmouth +10.5 at Canisius
Recommendation: Monmouth

Familiarity between these new MAAC opponents will be minimal since they have not faced each other yet this season. Youthful Monmouth squad has gone to a unique lineup which features three guards and a pair of 6’10” true freshman centers. Using a pair of big men in an up-tempo system (73.0 possessions per game overall, 74.8 in league play) wouldn’t seem to be a good fit but with this alignment, Monmouth won at high octane Niagara Friday night 85-74. Head coach King Rice is confident that playing the duo of Chris Brady and Zac Tillman together will continue to make the Hawks better. Monmouth shot 63% from the field in the win but that’s far above their poor season average of 39.5%. Defensively, they’ve been sound over the past eight games allowing only Quinnipiac to shoot above 44% from the field.

Canisius played their third consecutive tight contest Friday night defeating Rider in double OT 94-91 on a buzzer beating three by star Billy Baron. The Golden Griffins haven’t had much trouble offensively in conference play averaging 79.6 ppg on 46.9% shooting Read more
