College Football Betting Preview: Duke Blue Devils at Northwestern Wildcats

Duke at Northwestern
Saturday, 5 pm PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Northwestern -6 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Both clubs enter this contest off bad losses to weak opposition with Duke losing a 24-14 conference decision to Wake Forest and the Wildcats falling to FCS Illinois State 9-7 on a last second field goal. It’s early, but the outcome of this game could go a long ways in determining whether or not either of these teams reach the postseason.

Duke's offense is going through some transitional issues as starting quarterback Thomas Sirk was lost for the year with a torn Achilles and two new offensive lineman try to gel within the rotation. The Blue Devils were held to just 37 rushing yards last game, and in return allowed 239 yards on the ground and three touchdowns to Demon Deacons freshman tailback Cade Carney. Note that last year, Duke held Wake to only 112 yards on the ground. Duke’s rush defense surrendered only 3.61 ypc in 2015 thanks in large part to do-everything hybrid linebacker Jeremy Cash who was arguably the most Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Handicapping the NFL post-Week 1

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Week 1 of the NFL season routinely tells lies.  The goal of any winning handicapper has to be figuring out which teams were lying in their Week 1 performances.

Look no further than last year for some excellent examples.  On opening day of the 2015 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans blew out Tampa Bay 42-14.  Marcus Mariota looked like a superstar, throwing four TD passes in his NFL debut and finishing the game with a perfect passer rating.

If you bet the Titans the following week, you watched them lose outright by two touchdowns to the NFL’s worst team, Cleveland.   Mariota threw only five TD passes over the next four weeks before getting hurt.  Tennessee finished the season tied for the worst pointspread record in the NFL, cashing only three winning bets in their final 15 games.  The Titans lied to us in Week 1.

Remember when the Dolphins beat the Redskins, and covered as four point road favorites in Washington, thanks to a Jarvis Landry punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter.    Miami lost their next three games so badly that head coach Joe Philbin didn’t survive their bye Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Western Kentucky at Alabama
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -25.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Alabama -29.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Alabama

One of the themes in college football from last week was how bad the SEC looked. Seven losses in the opening weekend was the most ever for the conference, and even in victory, Florida and Tennessee struggled against lesser opponents. For a little over a quarter, it looked like Alabama was going to be part of the ugliness as they trailed USC 3-0 and failed to move the ball on offense. Three quarters later, it was apparent that Alabama was the class of the SEC and the nation after the 52-6 whipping of the Trojans.

Freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts’ entry into the game was the turning point for the Alabama offense, even though he lost a fumble on his first collegiate play. Hurts tossed two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tide piled up over 400 yards of offense in the final three quarters.

On defense, after allowing a USC field goal on their first possession, the Tide completely shut down the USC offense. The Trojans seemingly Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Ohio State Buckeyes

Tulsa at Ohio State
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Ohio State -28.5 O/U 67.5
CRIS Current: Ohio State -28.5 O/U 72.5
Recommendation: Tulsa

I provided a winning wager with Tulsa as a free play recommendation last week and I’m going to back to the well on Saturday as it heads to Ohio State. This is obviously not the greatest of spots for the Buckeyes after dominating a rebuilding Bowling Green squad 77-10 and a trip to Norman to face Oklahoma on deck. Tulsa meanwhile looked much improved as they took apart San Jose State 45-10. The Golden Hurricane closed -3.5 but ended up outgaining the Spartans by 225 yards en route to the easy win and cover. Ohio State’s offense looked spectacular last week as it piled up a mind boggling 776 yards. Bowling Green was once again outmanned defensively but unlike last season, struggled to move the football with a first-year quarterback and head coach. Tulsa is on much better footing. Third-year starting quarterback Dane Evans has a host of skill position talent surrounding him and a proven track record of being able to put points on the board. In games Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions at Pittsburgh Panthers

Penn State at Pittsburgh
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -6.5 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -6 O/U 49
Recommendation: Penn State

It’s always tough to be definitive on all teams after Week 1's results are in because there are so many variables. In this contest it’s pretty easy to take away a common theme of inconsistent offense and above average defense for each of these teams after they unimpressively disposed of Kent State by 20 and Villanova by 21. Neither of those final scores resulted in pointspread covers and neither lived up to the offseason hype surrounding these teams. There did however seem to be a difference between their respective offensive game plans and while Penn State’s was aggressive, it seemed as if Pittsburgh’s was more of the vanilla variety. Question is, if Pittsburgh was vanilla, did they play call it that way by design to hide some offensive elements from Penn State, or is the passing game not equipped to be a legitimate threat and balance the running of running back James Conner?

For Penn State, it was obvious that first-year Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Ranking all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 1

09.06.2016     08:06 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
The NFL Preseason is in the rear view mirror, with Week 1 kicking off on Thursday as Carolina travels to Denver as -3 road favorites.  Here’s how I have all 32 teams ranked heading into the regular season.

1. Carolina Panthers  - Cam Newton and Carolina’s offense are poised to rank among the most potent attacks in the NFL.  Watch out for the Funchess/Benjamin WR duo!

2. Seattle Seahawks - Russell Wilson gave an MVP caliber performance in 2015, but his ability to repeat that effort could be stunted by the Seahawks offensive line woes.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers come out of camp with a full complement of healthy weapons for Aaron Rodgers, good news after Rodgers numbers took a big hit without Jordy Nelson last year.

4. Arizona Cardinals - Arizona returns just about every key player on both sides of the ball from a team that ranked among the NFL’s elite in 2015.

5. New England Patriots - If Tom Brady was at quarterback, this team would be ranked #1.  But with Jimmy Garappolo behind center, the Pats take a modest tumble in my rankings.

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Andy Reid’s Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Appalachian State Mountaineers at Tennessee Volunteers

Appalachian State at Tennessee
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -22.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Tennessee -21 O/U 59
Recommendation: Tennessee

This will mark the third year in a row the Tennessee Volunteers play a strong mid-major to open the season and thus far, Butch Jones has made sure the Vols passed each test. In 2014, UT beat a 10-win Utah State team 38-7 and last season, cruised past high-powered Bowling Green, 59-30. Last year’s Sun Belt runners-up return 15 starters are a co-betting favorites with Arkansas State to win the conference title. Many think this will be a breakout year for Tennessee as the Vols are currently priced at -125 chalk to win the SEC East and the third betting choice (+420) to win the SEC championship.

Jones’ offense features two incredible playmakers in senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs and junior running back Jalen Hurd. Add to it a strong offensive line as well as talented depth at the skill positions and we have reason to believe the Vols will be able to move the ball with ease. And while Appalachian State will have edges on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Houston Cougars

Oklahoma at Houston
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -10 O/U 66
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -11.5 O/U 68
Recommendation: Over

My initial gut reaction here was to take a long, hard look at taking Houston plus the points.  The Cougars were no joke last year, finishing the season 13-1 following a resounding win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl.  Their lone loss came by a field goal on a cold, rainy November day at Connecticut when QB Greg Ward was sidelined for most of the game.

But after a thorough examination of the Houston defense, I think the Over is the superior play.  Houston is capable of putting points on the scoreboard, even against a quality defense like Oklahoma’s.  Head Coach Tom Hermann, who signed a contract extension to stay at Houston in the offseason, is the guy who designed an offense for third string QB Cardale Jones to hang 42 on Alabama and 42 more on Oregon when Ohio State pulled off back-to-back upsets to win the National Title back in 2014.  Last year, he took an unknown, unheralded former wide receiver in Greg Ward, and turned Read more
