MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Nuno) at Kansas City (Vargas) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Yankees have sunk back down to .500 with seven losses in their last ten games.  The biggest culprit in their recent slump has been an anemic lineup, particularly their struggling ‘middle of the order’ bats.  The Bronx Bombers haven’t been bombing, held to four runs or less in each of those last ten contests.  For the season, the Yanks now rank #13 out of 15 AL teams in runs scored, a bottom tier lineup despite their enormous payroll.

Carlos Beltran has only one hit in 14 at bats since coming off the DL. Mark Teixeira was scratched yesterday with a sore wrist, hitting only .176 in his last 16 games.  Brian McCann is hitting just .225 for the season, well below his career norms.  And Derek Jeter is in the midst of a 3-23 slump over his last six games.   Jeter’s quote speaks volumes: “When guys are scuffling it seems like Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Lohse) -106 at Pittsburgh (Cumpton) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

The Pirates return home from an extended ten game road trip that saw them play on both coasts; a classic flat spot for any squad, especially a team with a losing record that just earned series wins in San Diego and LA.  And they’ll face a very tough matchup against Kyle Lohse tonight, in the midst of another dominant campaign.

Lohse is coming off a complete game three hit shutout, needing only 93 pitches to dispense of the Cubs.  He’s thrown five consecutive quality starts on the highway and has dominated the Pirates lineup twice already this year: eight hits and two earned runs allowed in 15 innings of work. The Brewers are 9-3 in Lohse’s first dozen starts; 20-8 in his last 28 starts overall.  Very quietly, way underneath the radar Kyle Lohse is a Top 10 starting pitcher in terms of profitability to support here in 2014!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote that “the NFL offseason, at least for sports bettors, is essentially over.  Numbers are up, and they’re moving!”

“My first step in assessing the upcoming NFL season begins with a thorough look back at last year.  Every team’s power rating is set, in large part, based on where they finished the previous campaign.  Obviously, adjustments are made for injuries, luck, offseason improvements or declines, coaching changes and the like, but those base power rating numbers factor in what happened in 2013 very heavily.”

Last week, I focused on the 16 teams from the AFC.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll pass along a tidbit or two from each of the 16 NFC teams in regards to last year.  My focus is on things that are NOT likely to repeat the same way in 2014.  And this week, I’ll do my absolute best to avoid egregious errors like my ‘San Diego didn’t make the 2013 playoffs’ Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Weaver) at Oakland (Gray) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Oakland

Afternoon start in Oakland as the A's go for the three-game sweep of the Angels. The first two games of the series were all Oakland with 9-5 and 11-3 victories. We'll throw our support the A's way as young gun Sonny Gray takes on veteran Jered Weaver. In looking through Weaver's game log this is arguably his toughest test of the season – on the road vs. left-handed heavy Oakland. Let's also not forget the day time environment at Oakland Coliseum which tends to help the ball carry more. Weaver of course a fly baller suited more for night games in Anaheim. Overall Weaver has been very solid this season with a 2.99 ERA. But he's also been a tad fortunate with a .225 BABIP. On the flip side, Oakland's Sonny Gray is a less than ideal matchup for the Angels. Gray is first and foremost a groundballer (56.95%) and second, filthy against right-handers (.205 BA/.304 SLG) – a key with the big bats of Mike Trout (? Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The LVH Superbook posted their NFL Season Win totals last weekend.  Cantor sportsbooks (CG Technology) have had season win totals posted for months.  Many other books both here in Vegas and offshore have posted season win totals, Week 1 pointspreads and Game of the Year pointspreads.  Most books that haven’t posted NFL numbers yet plan to do so in the near future.  The NFL offseason, at least for sports bettors, is essentially over.  Numbers are up, and they’re moving!

My first step in assessing the upcoming NFL season begins with a thorough look back at last year.  Every team’s power rating is set, in large part, based on where they finished the previous campaign.  Obviously, adjustments are made for injuries, luck, offseason improvements or declines, coaching changes and the like, but those base power rating numbers factor in what happened in 2013 very heavily.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Philadelphia Phillies at Miami Marlins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Kendrick) at Miami (Eovaldi) -135 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I cashed a 20* Big Ticket winner on the Marlins Over last night, and Miami Overs remain a streak worth riding!  Under-the-radar MLB totals trends offer enormous potential for bettors.  The betting markets don’t seem to notice Over/Under streaks, nor do the national media.

No talking head will tell you that Miami is 9-2 to the Over in their last eleven ballgames; 28-15 to the Over for the full season; the single strongest Over team in the majors this year.  Yet all 46 of the Marlins previous games this year have been totaled at 8.5 or less; 41 of those games totaled at 7.5 or less, including tonight’s contest.  Quite clearly, the markets are behind the curve when it comes to Marlins totals.

Unders begat unders; Overs begat overs.  Hot hitting lineups don’t get cooled off without ace pitchers to shut them down.  Overworked Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the Western and Eastern Conference Finals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Only four teams remain standing in the NBA Playoffs; one of whom will bring home the title less than a month from now.  For all the drama of the first two rounds, it’s an all-chalk Final Four, with the top two seeds from each conference battling for supremacy.

With both Conference Finals getting underway on Sunday and Monday, I’ll take a closer look at the two series.  The goal, as always, is to unearth hidden nuggets pointing towards future pointspread success while assessing pace and totals as well.

Predicting series success generally correlates strongly with predicting pointspread success when it comes to the NBA Playoffs.  But not as much as last year!  In 2013, the Final Four teams combined to go 31-11 (74%) against the spread in the first two rounds of postseason; each of the four teams cashing at a 67% clip or better.  The ‘surprise’ team of the four, Memphis, went 10-1 ATS through the first two rounds before covering only once while getting swept by San Antonio.

The ATS success of the Final Four teams in 2014 pales in comparison to 2013.  Between them, the NBA’s Final Four have turned a Read more
