NHL Handicapper Free Play: Calgary Flames at Dallas Stars

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Calgary +180 at Dallas O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Calgary

My clients and I cashed a big dog winner on Calgary in their 2-1 OT win at Nashville on Tuesday night and I think the surging Flames are worth a play in this price range as they head to Dallas to face the Stars. It’s not easy to bet against Dallas as they possess the league’s best record at 23-6-1-1 but the Stars have not been quite as dominant in the short term with a 6-4 mark in their last 10 games. Calgary is on a major roll right now going 6-0 in their last six games and the way they gutted out wins on their recent home stand where they won all five games and against some good teams (Dallas, Boston, San Jose, Buffalo, and the NY Rangers) despite several players battling the flu. The Flames players spoke about really wanting to correct their road woes prior to the first game of their current road trip against Nashville and they played a very good game especially defensively holding the Predators to just 22 shots on goal in their 2-1 overtime win. The Flames are getting excellent offensive production from their top players lately with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan hitting the Read more

Las Vegas Bowl Betting Preview: BYU Cougars vs. Utah Utes

Las Vegas Bowl
BYU vs. Utah
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Utah -2.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Utah -2.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: BYU

Utah has been drawing significant support in recent bowl games, in large part due to Kyle Whiitingham’s impressive track record: 7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS in his eight bowls with the Utes.  They blew out Colorado State 45-10 last year.  And bettors certainly haven’t forgotten outright bowl upsets against the likes of Alabama, Cal, and Georgia Tech (twice) in the Whiitingham era.

The Utes have also enjoyed great success in recent seasons against their in-state rival.  The Utes have won each of the last four meetings since 2010 – three tight victories by a touchdown or less, and a 54-10 wipeout in Provo back in 2011. The two teams didn’t meet in the regular season this year, making this matchup a highly anticipated revenge meeting for the slight underdog.

For many of these minor bowls, motivation is a key element of the handicap.  That’s most assuredly not the case in this game.  These two programs Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin's Bo Ryan retires

12.16.2015     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In a weird turn of events, Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan abruptly retired following last night's games. Ryan originally was going to call it quits during the offseason but then agreed to coach through the end of this year. Longtime assistant Greg Gard will take over on an interim basis. Wisky's season has been up and down with three home losses and wins over Syracuse, Temple, and VCU. The Badgers don't play again until the 23rd (vs. UWGB) and open Big Ten play the 29th vs. Purdue.

"This was a decision months in the making," Ryan said. "I brought this up to Barry back in April. He advised me to take some time to think it over, and I appreciated that. But in recent weeks, I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to retire and for Greg Gard to have the opportunity to coach the team for the remainder of

College Football Handicapping: Georgia coaching staff gutted prior to bowl

12.15.2015     10:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting coaching situation for Georgia with Mark Richt headed to Miami and both offensive and defensive coordinators no longer with the program. It looks like tight ends coach John Lilly will call plays for the offense; he did so during last year's 37-14 bowl win over Louisville. Linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer will be in charge of the defense. The Dawgs have plenty of time to get acclimated with their bowl matchup vs. Penn State not taking place until January 2. UGA is currently a -6.5 favorite with a total of 41.5.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL quarterback situations late season theme for bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL is a quarterback driven league, and QB play (both good and bad) was the difference in the vast majority of games played this past weekend.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll take an overview of some of the ongoing QB situations in the NFL.  The goal?  Identify undervalued and overvalued quarterbacks (and therefore, teams) to wager on or against during the stretch run of the season.

Let’s start with the biggest injury of the weekend, when Cincinnati Bengals star Andy Dalton went down with a thumb injury after making a tackle following a red zone interception on the Bengals first drive.  Dalton has developed a well-deserved reputation as a bet-on QB in the regular season, despite his repeated postseason failures.  This has been, by far, his best year as a pro.  Dalton had a 106.3 QB rating when he got hurt, well above his previous career best of 88.8.  He’d thrown a career low seven interceptions and averaged a career high 8.4 yards per attempt, spreading the ball around to Cinci’s bevy of skill position weapons.  It’s an impact injury, for sure!

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Manhattan Jaspers at Memphis Tigers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Manhattan at Memphis
Recommendation:
Over 69.5 1st half

Manhattan is a total mess with various departures and injuries. Head coach Steve Masiello has been very candid about not really caring about what happens during the regular season so long as his team peaks come MAAC tournament time. The Jaspers are 1-6 and have allowed 80+ on four occasions. They press, play fast, and can't defend which isn't an ideal profile for a road game at Memphis. The Tigers have exceeded expectations thus far with solid wins over Ohio State and Louisiana Tech. Their two losses (Oklahoma and UTA) are nothing to be ashamed about either. Their shooting has a tendency to be hit or miss (a lot) but considering Manhattan's defensive numbers (56.9% eFG) and propensity to foul, the Tigers should have their way on the offensive end tonight. And speaking of fouls, that's going to be a huge factor in this game. Memphis' offense is predicated on driving and getting to the free throw line. Manhattan meanwhile fouls like crazy as its opponents score 28% of their points from the charity stripe. This is going to be an ugly one to watch but there should be some pace to it. Always the Read more

College Football Betting: Oregon loses offensive coordinator Scott Frost

12.11.2015     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of moving parts with all of the post-regular season coaching changes. Some plan on sticking around before taking over at their new post while others are already out the door. Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost took the UCF gig and is wisely heading to Orlando ASAP in order to douse the Knights' dumpster fire. That leaves the Ducks in a position of needing a play caller. It sounds as if head coach Mark Helfrich will fill the void though he said "everyone" will be potentially be involved. The Ducks don't play until January 2 vs. TCU in the Alamo Bowl.

“Scott will not be involved in our game, which is unfortunate for him,” Helfrich said. “But obviously he has a full plate in taking over at Central Florida.”

“Basically, we do everything collaboratively, anyway, from an offensive standpoint,” Helfrich said. “Myself, (wide receivers coach) Matt Lubick, (offensive line coach) Steve Greatwood, (running backs coach) Gary Campbell and

College Football Handicapping: USC's Helton guts defensive staff

12.11.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What better way to establish dominance than to fire half of your staff a day removed from being promoted. Newly appointed USC head coach Clay Helton cut bait with a number of defensive coaches including defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. The Trojans finished a respectable fourth in PAC-12 play with 5.88 yards per play allowed. However, in late season losses to Oregon and Stanford, the stop unit was gashed for nearly 1,000 yards at 7.8 ypp. USC is currently a -3 favorite for its Holiday Bowl matchup vs. Wisconsin.

"With the coaches we have on staff and with our graduate assistants, we feel more than confident in doing a great job with this bowl game," Helton said.

"This was entirely my decision," Helton said. "And one thing I appreciate about Mr. Haden is he's given me the right to run this football team exactly with the vision that I see, and I really appreciate that as a head coach. This is my decision as we move forward."

College Football Betting: Banged up Baylor looking forward to matchup vs. North Carolina

12.08.2015     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's college football bowl season and that means trying to decipher the level of motivation for team relegated to lesser bowl games. A month ago, Baylor was thinking playoffs but after a slew of quarterback injuries and back-to-back losses the Bears find themselves playing prior to New Year's Day. The good news is their opponent, No. 10 North Carolina, has their attention. The bad news is they're down to their third-string quarterback who suffered a concussion in last week's loss to Texas. Baylor is currently a -3 favorite vs. UNC.

“We could go to a bunch of bowl games this year and we’d have a hard time finding many more quality opponents than North Carolina,” Briles said. “That’s the reality of it. They deserve where they’re at. I don’t think motivation is an issue at all.”

“Next Monday we’ll know a lot more,” Briles said. “He’s going to have a bone scan. If it shows where it’s healed, then I

College Football Handicapping: A look back at Season Over/Under Wins

12.07.2015     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A quick look back at some of college football's biggest under and overachievers from a regular season over/under wins perspective. Original lines courtesy of CG Technology.

Florida
Season Over/Under Wins: 7ov-130
Regular Season Wins: 10
Storyline: A couple of close wins and down seasons by a majority of the SEC East helped the Gators pop for 10 wins. They were only a modest +0.37 yards per play vs. SEC foes.

Georgia Tech
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5ov-140
Regular Season Wins: 3
Storyline: A shoddy offensive line and decline in skill position talent led to Paul Johnson's worst season in Atlanta. After posting the nation's top third down conversion rate in 2014 (57.9%) the Yellow Jackets plummeted to 108th (34.9%).

Iowa
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5un-120
Regular Season Wins: 12
Storyline: Buoyed by one of the easiest regular season conference schedules in the country (avoided Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State) and a +12 turnover margin, the Hawkeyes were one win away from making the Playoffs.
