Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Looking at the contenders in the AFC

12.03.2012     09:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I spent the last few Sunday’s concentrating on some pretty bad football teams. It’s December now; time to shift my focus towards the other end of the spectrum. This week, I focused on four AFC Playoff contenders. Which teams have the potential to do some damage when January rolls around and which are frauds? Read on to find out!

Indianapolis - Indy is certainly not a Super Bowl contender. But given that they were seven point underdogs at 4-7 Detroit, the betting markets aren’t even calling the Colts a playoff caliber team. Even with starting cornerback Vontae Davis back in the lineup following a four game injury absence, the pass defense spent all afternoon getting torched. Where's the pass rush? Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were non-factors here.

The offensive line got dominated by Detroit’s front four for most of the afternoon. Andrew Luck was beaten up, taking one big hit after the next. Coming into the game with four fumbles and 10 INTs in five previous road games, Luck's emphasis was on ball security here. That emphasis didn’t work. He hit seven different receivers in the first half, but also threw a pair Read more

Houston at Tennessee
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Houston -4.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Houston -6.5 O/U 47

Houston is in their single worst spot of the entire season.  The Texans played an OT barnburner in Detroit last week, escaping with a hard fought three point win.  The previous week, the Texans pulled a ‘refuse-to-lose’ at home against the Jags, rallying from two TD’s behind in the fourth quarter for another OT win.  The week before that, the Texans were in a tough, physical game at Chicago in nasty, cold conditions that also was a one score game throughout.  That’s three consecutive ‘max effort’ games in a row.

Up next for Houston?  An AFC showdown at New England on Monday Night Football, with a chance to put themselves firmly in position for homefield edge throughout the playoffs.  In between those previous games and the Monday Read more

Big Ten Championship Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Wisconsin Badgers

Nebraska vs. Wisconsin
Saturday, 5 pm PT, Indianapolis – FOX
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 49
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Wisconsin pk

The Badgers are back in the Big Ten title game this season after beating Michigan State last year 42-39 and advancing to the Rose Bowl.  This year’s edition of Wisconsin football is a far cry from last year’s dream season with quarterback Russell Wilson.  In fact, the Badgers backed into the title game due to Ohio State and Penn State being ineligible.  Meanwhile, the Cornhuskers will be excited to play in the second ever Big Ten Championship.  The Huskers do have a history of playing in conference title games having reached the Big XII’s version as recently as 2009 and 2010.

The Badgers were expected to take a step back in 2012 and they certainly did.  Still, not many expected a 7-5 Read more

Central Florida at Tulsa
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Tulsa -1 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Tulsa -2 O/U 55
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tulsa -1.5

In what will be their swan song as part of Conference-USA, the UCF Knights will look to exit with the league crown as they travel to Tulsa to battle the Golden Hurricane in Saturday’s conference title game.

UCF wasn’t sure earlier this season if they’d even get the chance to participate in a bowl game. They were banned from bowl participation in August due to recruiting violations but the school elected to appeal the ruling and their fate won’t be decided until next season. The Knights finished 9-3 and 7-1 in C-USA play with their lone conference loss coming against Tulsa on this field a few weeks back, 23-21. Tulsa squeaked out the pointspread cover as a 1-point home and the game stayed under the total of 54. Tulsa finished with Read more

Nebraska is expected to be without two starting linemen for Saturday’s Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin. Center Justin Jackson (ankle) and defensive tackle Blake Steinkuhler (knee) both started all 12 regular season games.

Temple -7.5 at Buffalo
Recommendation: Temple

My clients and I cashed a ticket fading the Buffalo Bulls in their loss to in-city rival Canisius last week. The Bulls have been woeful so far this season. Their lone DI win came against Evansville in the Purple Aces’ first game without injured star Colt Ryan. They suffered three very bad losses to the likes of Princeton and Western Illinois on their home floor and against a sub-par Yale squad on a neutral court.

The Bulls are averaging just 59 points per game despite facing some rather mediocre competition. Tonight they take a big step up in class against Temple who boast a very solid core group of players led by Khalif Wyatt (14.7 ppg) and Scootie Randall (21.7 ppg). They have inside and outside scoring balance that will really cause problems for Buffalo.

The Bulls are likely to have senior guard Tony Watson back in their lineup after he missed time with an ankle injury but his effectiveness Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Louisville at Rutgers
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - ESPN

CRIS Opener: Rutgers -2.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: Rutgers -3 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Rutgers -3.5

The de facto Big East Championship takes place on Thursday with Louisville traveling to Rutgers. The winner of the game earns an automatic BCS bowl berth.

Louisville is about to play its 12th game of the season and at no point have I felt this team was of 9-2 “quality.” Defensively is where the Cardinals have repeatedly fallen short. The overall season numbers aren't far removed for 2011 but a quick dig shows the stop unit has without question regressed. In conference play, the Cardinals have allowed nearly 200 ypg on the ground – 75 ypg more than last season. And we’re not talking about a host of run-dominant teams with half the league averaging less than 140 ypg. I'm simply amazed that Louisville is 9-2 Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Bettors gear up for ACC-Big Ten Challenge

11.27.2012     06:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The ACC-Big Ten challenge gets underway with six matchups tonight and six tomorrow. The Big Ten has won three straight events but prior to that the ACC had won 10 straight. NBA Handicapper Free Play: Cleveland Cavaliers at Memphis Grizzlies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland +12 at Memphis O/U 194.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

This is the epitome of a flat spot for the Memphis Grizzlies.  Memphis has been as good as any team in the NBA through the first four weeks of the season.  Lionel Hollins’ squad enters tonight’s game with a 9-2 SU, 9-2 ATS mark.  They’re coming off a very satisfying win over the Lakers, after having already knocked off the likes of New York, Oklahoma City and Miami in the last two weeks.

The Grizzlies have been off for a couple of days, and now face the Cavs, Raptors and Pistons in their next three ballgames, all at home; teams with a combined 9-32 SU record this year – teams the Grizzlies know full well that they can beat.  It sets up for a lethargic performance for a team that isn’t used to this pointspread range – they haven’t been favored by more than seven points in any previous game this season and only two of their nine wins have come by more Read more

College Football Handicapping: Conference championship early line moves

11.26.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a quick look at the early lines moves for this weekend's college football conference championships.

Big East - Louisville at Rutgers (Thursday)
After both teams lost last weekend, Thursday's matchups becomes the de facto title game. Rutgers opened -2.5 but was quickly bet up to -3 across the board.

MAC - Northern Illinois vs. Kent State (Friday at Detroit)
No regular season meeting as both teams finished unblemished in league play. Combined the two squads were 20-4 against the spread. Interesting to see if the market pushes this game off the dead number of 5. CRIS opened NIU -5 but a small move towards Kent bumped it down to -4.5. The rest of the market has held firm at -5.

PAC-12 - UCLA at Stanford (Friday)
Both teams met last week as Stanford jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 35-17 victory. Note that the Bruins had already wrapped up the PAC-12 South prior to the contest – and are probably happy to be facing the Cardinal as oppose to Oregon. Stanford appears to be much improved since the move to quarterback Kevin Hogan who in four games has connected on 73% of Read more
