Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies at Baylor Bears

Texas A&M at Baylor +3 O/U 64.5
Recommendation: Baylor
Saturday, 4 pm PT

One thing to consider with overachieving football teams is whether or not they become satisfied once preseason goals have been achieved. Heading into 2009, Baylor’s main goal was to reach the postseason, something it hadn’t accomplished since 1994. At 7-3, the Bears are not only a lock to make the postseason but en route, they snapped an 11-game losing streak to in-state foe Texas – a historical win for the program. Following official bowl eligibility and its win over Texas, Baylor came out incredibly flat at Oklahoma State and was handed a 55-28 defeat. The lone positive was that the Bears didn’t quit – at least on offense – as they put up 28 second half points after being shutout in the first half. That however didn’t make up for the fact that they allowed 725 yards of total offense to the Cowboys. So the question remains, is Baylor still satisfied or can they bounce back at home Read more

Colorado fires Hawkins; Iowa State installed as road chalk

11.09.2010     08:12 AM     Printer Friendly
Iowa State -2.5 at Colorado O/U 55

Talk about a difficult handicap. On one side you have the Iowa State Cyclones who haven't been road chalk in Big XII play since 2005 when they lost outright at Kansas. But Colorado doesn't exactly hold a lot of betting value considering they just fired their coach after blowing a 45-17 fourth quarter lead at Kansas last weekend. The media came down hard on Dan Hawkins who despite a huge lead against the Jayhawks, allowed his son Cody to continue to pass the football -- Cody was closing in on the school's all-time passing record. According to the elder Hawkins, despite the 28-point fourth quarter lead, he didn't want the team's offense to become one-dimensional. Cody coughed up a fumble and threw an interception during the fourth quarter meltdown.

Texas Tech struggles stem from linemen losses

11.04.2010     12:24 PM     Printer Friendly
Missouri -4 at Texas Tech O/U 58.5

Here is a perfect example of why offensive and defensive linemen are so important. Texas Tech returned practically every skill position player from last year's squad, including two proven quarterbacks. On paper, even with the coaching change, it looked like another 8- or 9-win season in Lubbock, but as this beat writer points out, the losses along both lines are one of the main culprits in Tech's disappointing 4-4 record.

BTS: Aside from injuries, can you put your finger on why this Texas Tech team has struggled so far this season?

WILLIAMS: The biggest reason – and the reason I thought they’d be a 7-5, 8-4 team this year – was the personnel they lost in both lines. The offensive line lost three starters, and left guard Lonnie Edwards is the only starter back in the same position as last year. A lot of Read more

Nebraska -18 at Iowa State O/U 58
Recommendation: Under
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

The total in this contest hasn't moved at all this week and the reason is simple; Nebraska can score, but they can also play defense and Iowa State can't stop anyone but is also prone to low offensive outputs when asked to step up in class. The one thing that stands out is that this is the same total as Nebraska's game against Oklahoma State. The end result was a 92-point track meet, but I'm not so sure we'll see that here.

To me Iowa State has two games that skew their totals. In early October, the Cyclones beat Texas Tech 52-38 and then turned around and got hammered by Utah 68-27. Against Tech, there were 42 points scored in the fourth quarter – the margin was perfect for trading scores late in the game. The following week against the Utes, Iowa State was simply spent (allowed 41 first half points) and it led to a blowout. You can’t ignore those games but I lean more toward those efforts Read more

Baylor +7.5 at Oklahoma State O/U 73
Recommendation: Baylor
Saturday, 9:30 am PT

Two of the Big XII’s top quarterbacks will be on full display in what looks to be a high scoring shootout. I’ve sung Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin’s praises all season long. With him fully healthy and having really developed his passing acumen he has this offense clicking on all cylinders. The Bears, paced by Griffin’s 20 TD passes, are averaging a rock solid 34.3 ppg in all competition this season. In Big XII games they’ve faced some lower level competition but you still must be impressed by the offense as their production jumps up above 40 ppg. RG-III has completed over 72% of his pass attempts in conference games while firing 12 TDs against just three interceptions. You can’t forget about his ability to make things happen with his legs either as he’s rushed for seven more TDs on the campaign.

Not to be outdone, OSU’s Brandon Weeden has continued the Read more

CFB Handicapping: Not so hot road results for Oklahoma Sooners

11.03.2010     09:59 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma -3 at Texas A&M O/U 60.5

Interesting article on how Oklahoma has one of the more pronounced home/road dichotomies among the yearly national title contenders. Since 2005, the Sooners are 35-1 at home and 22-18 on the road/neutral. In true road games, they are 14-9. Alabama meanwhile is 22-12 road/neutral but that includes the 6-7 and 7-6 campaigns of 2006 and 2007. Texas is 22-3, USC 27-7 and Ohio State 23-4 in true road games. The next best home record during that span outside of OU's 35-1 is Ohio State at 38-4. OU's dichotomy also shows up in its pointspread history: 8-10 ATS as a road favorite since 2005, 6-10 ATS neutral, 22-12 ATS home favorite.

Texas loses another offensive line starter to injury

Texas -4 at Kansas State O/U 46.5

Lost in all the discussion of a disappointing campaign is the injury situation for the Texas Longhorns, most notably along the offensive line. In last week's loss to Baylor, left guard Michael Huey was hurt and will miss 4-6 weeks. The loss of Huey marks the third o-lineman (second starter) that the Longhorns have lost for the season.

Texas A&M gets big performance from new quarterback

11.01.2010     05:48 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma -4 at Texas A&M

Last Saturday, Texas A&M started quarterback Ryan Tannehill over Jerrod Johnson and the results were very positive. Tannehill finished 36-of-50 for 449 yards and four touchdowns in the Aggies' 45-27 win over Texas Tech. Original starter Jerrod Johnson had struggled with turnovers (nine INTs) and sacks (25), something Tannehill has up until this point managed to avoid (1 INT, 2 sacks).

"We've always thought he's a terrific player,” said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "You watch him throw in pre-game, you're like, 'Wow, the ball really flies off his hand.' He has a good arm and is a good decision maker. He's athletic and mobile and has a very talented group of skill players (to throw to).”

Oddsmakers adjust lines for Oklahoma State suspension

10.28.2010     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma State -5 at Kansas State O/U 66.5

With Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon officially suspended for Saturday's game at Kansas State, most sportsbooks have reposted their odds. OSU opened as a 6-point favorite but is now -5 across the board. While it is often times wise not to overreact to skill position player injuries, Blackmon was without question a major focus point in the Cowboys’ offense. Check out and compare Blackmon's and No. 2 receiver Josh Cooper's stats:

Blackmon - 62 catches, 1,112 yards, 14 TDs
Cooper - 36 catches, 400 yards, 1 TD

Stomach virus works over Texas Tech roster

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas Tech at Texas A&M -7 O/U 59

If you are traveling to Colorado this weekend, steer clear of the buffalo meat. Last week, Texas Tech not only left Boulder with a victory but also a decent sized stomach virus that is currently working its way through the Red Raider roster. According to reports, the team was without "10 or 12" players this week.

"Eric Ward got it during pregame, he didn't even dress out," Tuberville said after Wednesday's practice. "It's kind of gone through the team. We've had about 10 or 12 guys this week, hopefully we can get some guys back here later this week and we don't lose anymore.

"We're trying to keep everybody away that's had it because obviously it's pretty contagious. It's not the flu, it's kind of a stomach virus. LaRon Moore had it two days ago and he's back out here today. Half a Read more
