Las Vegas welcomes WCC and MWC tournaments

03.04.2011     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Despite the NCAA not wanting its championships to take place in states that offer sports gambling, it has allowed various conferences to conduct their own postseasons wherever they so choose. One of those destinations is Las Vegas where the West Coast Conference and Mountain West Conference will hold their respective tournaments. The WCC actually plays its conference tourney in The Orleans Hotel and Casino.

"Playing at a member institution's facility, on UNLV's campus rather than a casino facility, negates a lot of, if not all, those concerns," he says. "Gambling is probably more closely regulated and better controlled in Las Vegas than in any other city."

The WAC did not ask the Orleans for the sports-book restriction on its games, Orleans general manager Tony Taeubel says. However, he says, "We would be happy to do that for Read more

Rio Casino heist conducted by criminal masterminds

03.01.2011     11:08 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Just when you thought criminals couldn't get any dumber, we hear the details of the recent botched robbery at Las Vegas' Rio Casino. Apparently there were three men in on the take, one of which stole $33K in casino chips. The chip stealer owed $15K to another gentleman who claims he was not involved in the plot. The third guy decided it wise to use his own taxi cab as the getaway vehicle. During said getaway, the robber and driver chit-chatted about what took place which was must have been a hit down at the local precinct considering the conversation, as most in taxis, was being recorded. The driver then dropped the robber off at Terrible's Casino to meet with the guy claiming he wasn’t involved. Surprisingly, the robber, said by some to be a "leader in Read more

Las Vegas plays host to smartest criminals in the US

02.24.2011     09:33 AM     Printer Friendly
Seriously. What is with these people trying to rob casinos? And what is with them stealing chips? Another heist took place at the Las Vegas Rio this morning as a man wearing a fedora and fake moustache (of course) pulled a gun on a dealer and ran off with $32K in chips. His getaway you ask? A taxi. No word on whether or not he dropped his cell phone or posted his exploits on Facebook.

New airline promises Vegas-in-the-air type atmosphere

02.23.2011     11:30 AM     Printer Friendly
Gamblers from New York may find it much easier to get to Las Vegas starting this fall. LV Air has announced it will offer four nonstop daily flights from JFK to McCarran. The airline is expected to partner up with various Las Vegas casinos, which would purchase tickets for its best customers. Other perks include iPads, personal movie viewers, “direct to room" luggage service and holograms of celebrities explaining which exit to use in case you crash. Outside of the "high rollers", LV Air will also offer coach service with prices “comparable to those on major airlines". A Friday-Sunday round trip from New York to Las Vegas on United Airlines currently costs about $600.

"Seats to Las Vegas have been drastically reduced over the last three years by the major airlines. So we think we're filling a hole in demand, I think there is built-in demand in Read more

We asked Hilton sportbook director Jay Kornegay was exactly caused Vegas to lose out on Super Bowl XLII when the Giants upset the Patriots as 12.5-point underdogs. The answer was surprising as Kornegay said that most of damage came from the general public betting the Giants on the moneyline.

Nevada sportsbooks barely profitable in wake of Super Bowl XLV

02.08.2011     02:31 PM     Printer Friendly
The Nevada Gaming Control Board reported that there was $87.5 million bet on Super Bowl XLV throughout the state. The sportsbooks made out with a mere $724K thanks to the Green Bay/Over result.

"The big sharp money just never materialized because they never got value," he said.

"There wasn't anyone that lost anything mind-blowing," he said. "I think we were really worried about it being a loss -- it could have been worse."

"I can't say I've got a cheese head in my office right now," said Jay Kornegay, executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Increased betting options at Nevada sportsbooks

02.03.2011     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
The offshore world has had no issue posting odds on events with outcomes that are voted on but up until recently, betting on events such as American Idol of the Oscars was illegal in Las Vegas. The Nevada Gaming Commission felt these events were too easy to manipulate and unreliable as far as the process for which a winner was decided. That however is about to change as the Las Vegas Sun reported today that the NGC approved a measure that would allow Nevada sportsbooks to offer odds on non-sporting events such as presidential elections and reality TV.
