NBA Handicapping: Mavericks on under-the-total hot streak

03.03.2015     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on the Dallas Mavericks' recent defensive improvements despite being without the services of Rajon Rondo and Tyson Chandler for multiple games. The increase in defensive play coupled with a few sub-par shooting nights has resulted in eight straight games going under the total.

"Our focus is a lot more on the defensive end of the floor," Rondo said after the Mavs' 102-93 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. "Offense never wins championships. Scoring 108 or whatever we were scoring means nothing if you're giving up 105 or 110.

"Guys are understanding what we need to accomplish," reserve guard Devin Harris said. "Our help-side defense is impacted. We've always had Tyson in the middle, but I think we're doing a better job of closing the gaps, forcing people to shoot more jump shots, forcing skip passes and things that we've been emphasizing all year long. I think guys are really honing in on that.

NBA Handicapping: Dallas travels to Sacramento in back-to-back spot

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tough spot for Dallas tonight with its game against Sacramento marking the seventh in 10 days and third back-to-back. Last night, the Mavs blew a 21-point lead at Golden State in a 128-114 loss. Monta Ellis and Chandler Parsons both played 38 minutes.

"You think about fatigue from top to bottom, not just for your best guys. But we’ll see where we are tomorrow and go from there.’’

NBA Gambling Update: Bulls in tough spot following hump up effort vs. Spurs

UPDATE

So Chicago's "team meeting" obviously helped as the Bulls smoked San Antonio last night, 104-81. But the question is can they do it again, in a back-to-back spot, on the road, against arguably the best offense in the NBA?

“Tonight we came out with the right attitude, we set the tone defensively, we were getting to the loose balls, we were rebounding the ball well,” Gasol said. “Just active from the weakside, communicating better. All those things make such a big difference.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the Western and Eastern Conference Finals

Only four teams remain standing in the NBA Playoffs; one of whom will bring home the title less than a month from now.  For all the drama of the first two rounds, it’s an all-chalk Final Four, with the top two seeds from each conference battling for supremacy.

With both Conference Finals getting underway on Sunday and Monday, I’ll take a closer look at the two series.  The goal, as always, is to unearth hidden nuggets pointing towards future pointspread success while assessing pace and totals as well.

Predicting series success generally correlates strongly with predicting pointspread success when it comes to the NBA Playoffs.  But not as much as last year!  In 2013, the Final Four teams combined to go 31-11 (74%) against the spread in the first two rounds of postseason; each of the four teams cashing at a 67% clip or better.  The ‘surprise’ team of the four, Memphis, went 10-1 ATS through the first two rounds before covering only once while getting swept by San Antonio.

The ATS success of the Final Four teams in 2014 pales in comparison to 2013.  Between them, the NBA’s Final Four have turned a Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Recapping NBA Playoff Game 1's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There were eight opening round NBA Playoff Series that started this past weekend.  The lower seeded road teams – all underdogs in Game 1 – went 6-2 ATS, including five outright upset winners.  There were four games that flew Over the total, three that stayed Under and one (Miami-Charlotte) that finished right in between the opening and closing total.

This is just the start of a two month NBA Playoff marathon, and those Game 1’s may not be indicative of how these opening round series are likely to play out.  Here are some key note and quotes for each series following those Game 1’s.

Miami looked sluggish and lethargic for extended stretches of their opener against Charlotte, but took over the game with an 18-4 run in the fourth quarter when LeBron James was sitting on the bench.  Head coach Erik Spoelstra:  “We were flat to start. I think our guys were just anxious."  LeBron: “That group that was in once I took that break at the 10-minute mark in the fourth quarter, they just bumped the lead. Obviously, to have three Hall of Famers in the game when I'm out of the game, CB, D-Wade and Ray Read more

NBA Gambling News: Mavericks will play regular rotation vs. Grizzlies

Dallas at Memphis -3.5 O/U 190.5

Dallas plans on playing its regular rotation tonight against Memphis despite having a postseason spot locked up. The team feels reaching the 50-win plateau is worth fighting for. Not to mention if they win they avoid top seed San Antonio is the first round. All three potential opponents (Spurs, Thunder, or Clippers) are obviously quality ball clubs but the Mavs haven't had a lot of success of late against San Antonio having lost nine straight.

“I’m not even thinking about that kind of stuff,’’ Carlisle said after Wednesday morning’s shootaround at the FedEx Forum. “If you can get a higher seed, if you can get 50 wins, you do it.

“It’s more than just avoiding San Antonio,’’ center Samuel Dalembert said. “It’s more like we have pride

NBA Handicapping: Mavericks score big win thanks to defense

Dallas -8 at LA Lakers O/U 223

Heading into last night's critical game against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Dallas Mavericks all of a sudden got fired up to play a little defense. The message on the chalk board prior to the game read, "I WILL COMMUNICATE AND GUARD MY ASS OFF." For the most part, that is what the Mavs did en route to a 113-107 road win. They held the Clippers to 43% from the floor and 22% from three. Let's see if they can carry that over to tonight's matchup against the Lakers.

“Coaches, players, Cubes (owner Mark Cuban), everybody,” said Devin Harris of who signed the board. “Monte came in and started writing that down with our normal pregame stuff.”

Added Jae Crowder: “It was simple and effective. You can use it as a joke, but we just need all guys in. It was helpful.”

NBA Handicapping: Crucial five-game swing for Dallas Mavericks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Dallas -2.5 O/U 215.5

We've mentioned a couple of times that Dallas' post-All-Star break schedule was tough and thus far they haven't exactly responded well having dropped three straight. The Mavs' next five games could very well define their season: vs. Portland, vs. Indiana, at Golden State, at Utah, and at Oklahoma City. Dallas is currently the eighth seed in the Western Conference; a half game behind Phoenix and a game ahead of Memphis.

“I know we’re tougher than what we showed,” he said of their 115-110 loss at Denver on Wednesday. “And, yeah, this is the first time we’ve dropped three in a row all year, so it’s a time of great urgency.

“And we’ve got to step up, and we’ve got to respond. This is good. We need it. We need to

Dallas -5 at Denver O/U 218.5

No better time than the present – or after losing 11 of 12 – to start talking defense! According to reports, Denver head coach Brian Shaw held an intense, two-hour, defensive-only practice yesterday. Tonight's total vs. Dallas was bet up from 216.5 to 218.5.

"Hopefully, this will kind of eliminate the confusion we've been having," said Shaw, whose team hosts Dallas on Wednesday. "I expect to see significant progress (Wednesday), because we've eliminated a lot of the doubt."

Dallas -13.5 at Philadelphia O/U 212

Huge move on both the side and total for tonight's Dallas-Philadelphia game. The Mavericks opened -9.5 with a total of 216. They've since been steamed up to -13.5 while the total – a rare occurrence for any game involving the 76ers – was bet down to 212. Yesterday, Philly unloaded Evan Turner, Lavoy Allen, and Spencer Hawes.
