Dallas at Oklahoma City -8 O/U 209

The latest reports indicate that Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant will play tonight against Dallas. Durant hurt his ribs in Saturday's loss at Cleveland. Durant hasn't missed a game since December of 2010. Also slated to play is Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki who missed two games with an abductor strain.

Hey Los Angeles Lakers…hey Portland Trailblazers…hey Dallas Mavericks…the Houston Rockets aren’t interested in taking a powder the rest of the NBA season and handing away their playoff spot to any of you guys!

In fact, the way the Rockets played tonight, the teams above them in the Western Conference playoff race will need to start looking in the rearview mirror. Particularly the team they beat, current #7 seed…the Utah Jazz.

2-Point Percentage: Houston 56%, Utah 43%

NBA Handicapping: Schedule has Houston Rockets running on fumes

You’re about to see what fatigue looks like statistically!

Last week we talked about the brutal schedule stretch that was coming up for the Houston Rockets. They had just defeated the Los Angeles Lakers. But, they were about to embark on a two-week odyssey that would see them play two different four-game-in-five-night stretches with the vast majority of action on the road.

We then suggested the team hit a wall in the fourth quarter in New Orleans the next night (when they were outscored 29-10 to blow a big lead). Then, we monitored developments through the week as the Rockets continued to lose. Tonight’s 105-95 loss at Indiana continued the story. And, I’ve come up with a way that may be the best illustration of what happens to the Rockets when they get tired (for other teams, it may show up in other categories).

First, a quick review of the gauntlet to this point…

NBA Handicapping: Dallas Mavericks continue to rack up overtime losses

Dallas at Utah -5 O/U 197.5

The Dallas Mavericks have lost 11 of their last 13 (6-7 ATS) heading into tonight's game at Utah. Defense has been a major issue, as has closing out games. The Mavs have yet to win an overtime tilt which doesn't seem all that shocking until you notice they've played seven such contests. Also note that while those results could be considered a bit unlucky, Dallas has also lost eight games by 20 points or more.

"We can't guard anybody," forward Shawn Marion said. "Coach [Rick Carlisle] said it first: It's not at the offensive end, it's the defensive end.

"Some nights you can't control the ball going in and out, but you can control your defense. But when you can't guard anybody, you can't keep anybody in front of you and keep them from just beating you off the dribble, that sums it up.

Philadelphia -3.5 at Charlotte O/U 189
Recommendation: Over

After seeing Philadelphia live at Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night versus Dallas, it seems like a good time to step in and look at them from an OVER perspective right now. Offensively, head coach Doug Collins crew operated quicker and much sharper in their sets for the majority of the game. The starting forward tandem of Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young are becoming a handful and figure to be just that for their counterparts Byron Mullens and Michael Kidd-Gichrist tonight. There are other matchups that look exploitable in this game as well. Sixers PG Jrue Holliday fares much better against size than quickness which indicates Bobcats PG Kemba Walker could have a very nice stat line tonight. I like the bench opportunities here too as the Mavericks reserve guards Darren Collison and Vince Carter scored fairly easily when matched with Malik Wayns (Villanova rookie) and Nick Young. That should work here too as Charlotte’s Read more

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards remain an absolute mess

Washington at Dallas O/U 192

Making fun of the Washington Wizards never gets old. For whatever reason, this year's group has decided that three-pointers are the key to victory. Unfortunately, they are shooting 27.9%. AJ Price is hoisting 6.8 threes per game (26.8%) while rookie Bradley Beal, who leads the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg, is averaging 4.5 attempts per game (33.3%). The Wizards are 0-6 SU but somehow 3-3 ATS in part because opposing teams have a difficult time taking them seriously.

“When you struggle offensively like that, there are reasons for that,” Coach Randy Wittman said after the Wizards opened the season 0-6 for the second year in a row. “I thought the first quarter was one of our better quarters. We moved the ball fast. Very little holding of the ball. Very little searching for shots. Read more

If you got tickets to Friday's Mavericks-Knicks game, there is a small chance this guy may pass you the popcorn you just purchased.

“I don’t think there is any reason why they’d remove me from the stadium,” Donaghy told The Linemakers via phone from his Sarasota, Fla. home. “I’m there to take in a game and look at some live action and do a bit of scouting. I’m not even too sure that anyone is really going to notice me, to be honest with you.”

“I’m not saying anyone is gambling or any ref is doing something they shouldn’t in the game,” Donaghy said. “But they have tendencies and call a game a certain way.”

NBA Regular Season Over/Under Win Recommendation - Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers
Recommendation: Under

CRIS: 46

The 76ers were great to us during the 2010-11 season, which coincided with the hiring of head coach Doug Collins.  We banked massive profits after their troubling 3-13 SU start – they finished 41-41 and were an ATS machine.  Last year, in the lockout shortened season, it looked like Philadelphia was the same hard-trying team with solid chemistry as they jumped out to an 18-7 start.  However, this was clearly a mirage as they finished the regular season on a 17-24 run, and the goodwill Collins created clearly had left the building.  They did rally to beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, but there’s no way that happens with a healthy Derrick Rose on the floor.

The truth of the matter is Collins largely lost this team back in February.  He has a track record of coming in and getting young players to “buy in” before he eventually tears everyone around him down to the point of no return.  In this era and with today’s player it can happen Read more

Amazingly, the underdog has covered 10 straight games in the Oklahoma City-Dallas series. The Thunder currently hold a 2-0 lead but the Mavs came away with both ATS victories. Despite that trend, Dallas was bet up from an opener of -1 to -3.5 for tonight's contest.
