NBA Handicapping: Crucial five-game swing for Dallas Mavericks

03.07.2014     08:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Dallas -2.5 O/U 215.5

We've mentioned a couple of times that Dallas' post-All-Star break schedule was tough and thus far they haven't exactly responded well having dropped three straight. The Mavs' next five games could very well define their season: vs. Portland, vs. Indiana, at Golden State, at Utah, and at Oklahoma City. Dallas is currently the eighth seed in the Western Conference; a half game behind Phoenix and a game ahead of Memphis.

“I know we’re tougher than what we showed,” he said of their 115-110 loss at Denver on Wednesday. “And, yeah, this is the first time we’ve dropped three in a row all year, so it’s a time of great urgency.

“And we’ve got to step up, and we’ve got to respond. This is good. We need it. We need to

Dallas -5 at Denver O/U 218.5

No better time than the present – or after losing 11 of 12 – to start talking defense! According to reports, Denver head coach Brian Shaw held an intense, two-hour, defensive-only practice yesterday. Tonight's total vs. Dallas was bet up from 216.5 to 218.5.

"Hopefully, this will kind of eliminate the confusion we've been having," said Shaw, whose team hosts Dallas on Wednesday. "I expect to see significant progress (Wednesday), because we've eliminated a lot of the doubt."

Dallas -13.5 at Philadelphia O/U 212

Huge move on both the side and total for tonight's Dallas-Philadelphia game. The Mavericks opened -9.5 with a total of 216. They've since been steamed up to -13.5 while the total – a rare occurrence for any game involving the 76ers – was bet down to 212. Yesterday, Philly unloaded Evan Turner, Lavoy Allen, and Spencer Hawes.

NBA Handicapping: Team meeting, favorable schedule has Dallas Mavericks streaking

02.11.2014     06:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following a 117-115 loss to Houston two weeks ago, the Dallas Mavericks have ripped off five straight wins (4-1 ATS). The team reportedly had a closed door meeting to ensure everyone was on the same page. The schedule during that stretch certainly helped with games against Boston, Utah, Cleveland, and Sacramento. The upcoming slate will be more challenging with 10 of their next 15 on the road including tilts against Indiana (twice), Miami, San Antonio, Portland, Golden State, and Oklahoma City.

“We gave up [117] points to Houston at home and we had a meeting after that on how we wanted to finish strong before the All-Star break,” forward Dirk Nowitzki said after Monday’s practice. “That’s what we’ve been doing. [We’re] focusing a lot more on defense and rebounding.”

Asked if it was a players-only meeting, Nowitzki smiled and said: “Coach was definitely in there, brother. He was definitely in there after that loss.”

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Dallas Mavericks at Brooklyn Nets

Dallas at Brooklyn -2 O/U 200
Recommendation: Brooklyn

Brooklyn continues to hit its stride winning and covering the pointspread in 8 of its last 9 games. Defense has been the catalyst for the Nets as over the nine games they’ve held the opposition to 42.6% shooting, and 92 points per game. In comparison the Nets started the campaign 10-21, while allowing 46% shooting and 102.4 points per game. In addition, they just got back All-Star point guard Deron Williams who missed the prior five games. Williams has looked strong coming off the bench, while giving the Nets a dose of energy. Realistically, the Nets really only need to break into the top six of the Eastern Conference for playoff positioning in order to avoid Miami and Indiana in the first round. Meanwhile, the Mavericks continue to boast a solid 25-19 record, as they’ve largely tred to outscore the opposition on a nightly basis. As a result they are a bottom 10 defensive team with the majority of their roster is littered Read more

Dallas +4.5 at LA Clippers O/U 208
Recommendation: Dallas

From a pointspread perspective, the Dallas Mavericks have played much better on the road (12-7 ATS) than they have at home (9-11 ATS) for extended stretches this season.  They’ve been good underdogs as well, cashing at a 60% clip for the year when catching three points or more.

And the Mavs absolutely have this game circled after blowing a late lead against the Clippers when these two teams met in Dallas just two weeks ago.  Dallas led by six with less than five minutes to play before a 16-2 Clippers run turned victory into defeat in a game where the Mavs hung 70 by halftime.

Mavs guard Monta Ellis talking about the rematch: “I think our mindset is different heading into this game on a three game winning streak.”  And with Dallas getting solid production off the bench from the likes of Vince Carter and Wayne Ellington, this Ellis quote is worth mentioning as well: “If they (the bench) continue to keep that up, we can make a run.”

The Clippers are in a classic flat spot here.  They absolutely annihilated their Read more

NBA Gambling: Dallas Mavericks Season Over/Under Wins

Dallas Mavericks
Season O/U Wins:
43.5
Recommendation: Under

The Dallas Mavericks were hoping to land a franchise player in the offseason, and in the end they got Monta Ellis.  Like most teams, the Mavs understand that to in order to win an NBA Championship you need a franchise player and they made their roster interchangeable to chase those types of players.  However, when they didn’t land the big fish, the Mavs were left scrambling, and ended up with makeshift veterans like Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert, and Ellis.  The major dilemma this team faces will be on defense.  Head coach Rick Carlisle is known as a defensive coach, but he’ll face an uphill with Ellis, Calderon, Vince Carter, and Dirk Nowitzki all sieve-like defenders.  No question this is a bottom-tier stop unit.

Offensively the Mavericks will score their fair share of points; however it could take time to mesh with so many new faces.  Having Ellis on your team makes efficiency on both ends of the court a battle at times.  Finally, it’s a team with age.  Nowitzki is 35 years old and has dealt with Read more

NBA Playoff Betting Notes: Boston Celtics try to climb 0-2 mountain

New York at Boston -3 O/U 183.5

Being down 2-0 in a playoff series isn't a death sentence but the odds certainly aren't stacked in your favor. Only 15 teams have ever rallied back after losing the first two games. One of those teams was the Dallas Mavericks who in 2005 dropped back-to-back contests at home to the Rockets but won rallied back to win the series in seven games.

“I guess they say the series hasn’t started -- and I’ve heard this corny line a million times -- until the road team wins,” said Rivers. “I am positive the series has started because we are down 2-0.”

“We lost those first two at home and went in their building and beat them pretty good twice and ended up winning in seven

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Miami Heat fit the profile of a champion

04.15.2013     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every year, prior to the end of the regular season, I write a column I call ‘Who Has What it Takes to Win the Big Dance”.  After Louisville’s NCAA Tournament Championship this year, we’ve seen future champions fit a specific statistical profile in 15 of the last 16 tournaments.  As a result of that specific statistical profile, I can simply go through all the contending teams, one by one, to see which squad has the best chance (or one of the best chances) to cut down the nets following six consecutive victories over a three week span.

I do not go through a specific statistical profile that predicts NBA playoff success the same way I do for college.  And while the NCAA Tournament is a relative sprint, the NBA Playoffs are an extended, two month long marathon; a war of attrition as much as anything else.  A race towards a four series, 16 victory championship requires talent and health.

We don’t see longshots winning NBA titles very often.  The biggest surprise teams to win a title in the last two decades – the 2004 Pistons and the 2011 Mavericks – were both deep, veteran, defensive minded Read more

NBA Handicapping: Utah Jazz win fifth in a row, hold half game lead over Lakers

Submitted by Stat Intelligence

For those of you (us) who have only been half-paying attention to the NBA during the crush of March Madness, it’s time to get caught up on the race for the #8 spot in the Western brackets. I’ve been trusting glances at the mainstream media to keep me informed, which led to a couple of surprises.

*Utah has had trouble shedding its “choker” label, even though they’ve now won five games in a row by margins of 16-15-10-9-10. They’re either 7-0-1 or 8-0 against market prices their last eight depending on when Jazz backers hit the Monday line. Some choke job!

*Dallas is seen as a hard-charging team making a run even though they were just crushed at home by Brooklyn and Indiana, and needed a heroic last second shot from Dirk Nowitzki to survive a home game with Chicago. They are playing better than they had been. But, Western Conference playoff caliber teams don’t get spanked at home by Brooklyn and Indiana.

The one thing that has been Read more
