We chipped in a
tournament preview
and match-up winner last week at Colonial and here are some thoughts, insight and player profiles for this week’s event at Muirfield Village.
Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of the great Jack Nicklaus. Located near his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, the Golden Bear named this course for the site of his first British Open victory. Jack’s tournament is by invitation only and will have 120 players competing this week.
The Nicklaus-designed course is a manicured masterpiece that stretches to 7,352 yards and is a par 72. The fairways offer some width and are quite generous despite being narrowed in the past five years. A second-shot course that requires creative shot-shaping and solid iron skills, players must play from the fairway and be more precise as they approach the pure bent grass greens. The greens are undulating and fast, but note a 30% chance of rain Thursday and 60% chance of rain Friday could soften them up for better scoring. Recent champions

NBA Playoff History: Streaking Spurs to be tested by Thunder

, San Antonio is on a remarkable run entering the Western Conference Finals having won 18 straight games while rewarding their betting backers with a 15-2-1 ATS mark. Now the betting public seems to be riding the Spurs in the Western Conference finals series as well as Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, I’ve outlined some similar teams on remarkable rolls heading into the Conference Finals that did not pay off for their betting backers.

NBA Handicapping: Spurs on historic run heading into Western Conference Finals

The San Antonio has been a model franchise for years while winning four NBA titles in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Shooting for another championship, the Spurs head into the 2012 Western Conference finals as the hottest team in the NBA. They’ve won 18 straight games including eight straight in the playoffs. The Spurs have been bet up to a -205 series favorite over the Thunder and have looked nearly flawless while dominating opponents over the past six weeks. Despite being prohibitive favorites in a majority of their games, San Antonio has gone 15-2-1 ATS during its smoking hot run.

as their 18-game winning streak is among the 10 longest in NBA history. They are the only playoff team averaging over 100 ppg (102.5). The Big Three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Mano Ginobili are scoring 46% of the team’s points, but this year’s Spurs team is deeper and more balanced. I went to the archives to pull out an old Fairway PGA preview and modified some thoughts from the tee. Colonial Country Club is an old-fashioned layout measuring nearly 7,200 yards and a par 70. Experience has always paid off along with solid shot-making and scrambling. Many idiosyncrasies to learn and understand about the golf course, as the wind, tree-lined doglegs and fairly narrow fairways put a premium on accuracy over power. Patience is a pre-requisite and solid ball strikers (combination driving distance and accuracy with GIR) come to the forefront. Players with a solid short game strategy and scrambling ability are your best bets.
Holes 3-4-5 referred to as the “Horrible Horseshoe” are the toughest stretch with the navigation of the Trinity River on hole no. 5 making it the most difficult hole on the course. Other tough scoring holes to watch are no. 4, 9 and 14. “Hogan’s Alley” is steep in tradition and the great Ben Hogan once noted that, "A straight ball will get you in more trouble at Colonial than any other course I know."

We cashed a pair of NBA winners last night when the 76ers (+4.5) beat Boston outright and the Thunder (-7.5) romped over the LA Lakers 119-90. Miami and Oklahoma City won and covered their opening games in Round 2, and those victories highlight a proven and profitable playoff parameter on Round 2 home favorites.
Over the past decade, Round 2 home favorites have experienced more success than any other round of the NBA playoffs. Miami won and covered all three home games as favorite last season against Boston, and NBA home favorites have covered over 58% of their games since the start of the 2003 playoffs (sample size over 170 games).
That’s a solid base situation with a large sample size. This season, Round 2 home favorites are 2-2 as the Celtics failed to cover either game, and last season those Round 2 home favorites went 11-4. But add in this line parameter and the bigger home favorites provide a stronger profitable profile. Since 2003, home favorites of -5 or more points are now 84-22 straight-up and 67-38-1 ATS (64%). Combined with rough-covered knolls and craters, tall trees and plenty of water, players are required to hit their targets or they find themselves with difficult recovery shots.
