NFL Preseason Betting: Tennessee's Locker gets starting nod Friday

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Tampa Bay -3 O/U 37

Tennessee announced that Jake Locker will start Friday's Week 2 preseason game against Tampa Bay.

"We'll start Jake on Friday. It gives him an opportunity to start the game from the beginning. Then, Matt will come in and we'll go from there," Munchak said.

"You want to give them enough to where you can get some drives going. You hope you're out there longer. You want to get them in the 20s as far as plays," Munchak said. "It's a position he hasn't been in yet. Obviously we started Matt last week and we'll do the opposite this weekend."

NFL Preseason Gambling: Tennessee's Hasselbeck outplays Locker in practice

Tennessee at Seattle -3 O/U 34

There was some talk that Tennessee's Jake Locker had a small lead over Matt Hasselbeck for the starting spot but local reports indicate the Hasselbeck is now the frontrunner. Hasselbeck looked very sharp during Thursday's practice while Locker struggled. Head coach Mike Munchak tried to downplay the disparity in performance. The Titans are +3 at Seattle for Week 1 of the preseason.

“I really don’t pay attention out here as far as who is doing where the ball is going because a lot of it is not the quarterback, a lot of it is the way guys are running routes,’’ coach Mike Munchak said. “There’s a lot of things that weight into it.

“If guys aren’t hitting what they want obviously they start pressing a little bit, but that is something that happens in this Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers' AFC South Gambling Preview

Houston Texans
After nearly a decade of trying to get over the hump, the Texans finally broke through last year, going 10-6, winning the AFC South and even winning a playoff game. All that despite an injury plagued season that saw many of their top players go down for extended stretches.

Houston was a money winner for their supporters, thanks to a 9-5-2 ATS mark.  They outgained their opponents by 0.9 yards per play, tied for second best in the NFL, and finished with a +7 turnover margin.  The Texans were an Under team in 2011, cashing at a 10-6 clip.

But before we get carried away with all of the success, let’s not ignore that the Texans beat up on a very weak slate of opponents.  Houston faced third easiest schedule in the NFL based on my numbers – numbers based on my power rating of their opponents for the week that the game was played.

2012 Issues: Houston has fairly good continuity from last year to this year.  Head coach Gary Kubiak and both coordinators return, most notably defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  Phillips took a defense that had been ranked dead Read more

NFL Handicapping: Titans will start Hasselbeck if healthy

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee -6.5 at Indianapolis O/U 41

Despite a solid performance by rookie Jake Locker last week – outside of the last play of the game – the Tennessee Titans plan on starting Matt Hasselbeck (if healthy) against Indianapolis this Sunday. Locker replaced Hasselbeck (calf) early in last week's game against the Saints and finished with 282 yards passing and a touchdown.

“We’re looking at it as if we are in the middle of a playoff run here, and we have to win these three games,” Munchak said. “And if Matt is healthy, then he’ll quarterback us. (But) until you get out there and start moving around and doing some things a quarterback has to do, we’ll know a lot more then.”

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 14 AFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC News and Notes from Week 14.

San Diego
How does a team that has marched down the field and scored on their opening drive in each of the last seven weeks be sitting in last place at the start of the game? Simple – they don't carry any of that early momentum forward – once the scripted plays run out, so does the offense! And there's a character issue here as well – when their opponent punches, the Chargers don't seem to punch back very well. But San Diego finally punched back here after the Bills cut the lead to six following yet another unforced Philip Rivers error, with a TD drive followed by a pick six to retake control of the game. That's a very positive sign for a team that still believes they can sneak into the playoffs. For as rough as Philip Rivers' season has been, he came into the game leading the NFL in Read more

College Football Gambling Notes: Cal seeks revenge against Washington

09.23.2011     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
California at Washington -1 O/U 58.5

PAC-12 opener for both schools with most of the money coming in on Cal (down from opener of 3). A revenge game of sorts for the Golden Bears who lost on a last second play to the Huskies in last year's season finale – it kept Cal out of the postseason. Washington quarterback Keith Price has looked every bit as effective as Jake Locker though there are some concerns about his health. Washington's offense has been extremely sharp thus far but the defense hasn't.

“Everyone knows what happened last year, so the team’s pretty fired up about it,” linebacker Mychal Kendricks Read more

On how much the starters will play in the final preseason game: We'll get a feel for that as we get into the game. Obviously, we'd like to see a couple of really good series and then go from there. Saturday NFL Preseason Betting News and Notes

08.13.2011     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
Betting news, notes and links for Saturday's NFL Preseason games.

Cleveland Browns - First-year head coach Pat Shurmur said the starters will play a full quarter against the Packers. The Browns are switching to the West Coast offense as well as a 4-3 defense.

“It’s important that we learn a lot about our team, our whole team,” Shurmur said. “I think most teams approach it this way. Whether you’re a guy that’s lined up as a first-teamer, second-teamer or a guy fighting to make the team, every rep is valuable.

"We take these games very seriously and to start the year out against an opponent like the Super Bowl champs will be a good gauge. The twos will get in for a couple quarters. The rest of the guys will play in the fourth quarter.”

NCAAF Betting Notes: Sarkisian to give Price three-game test run

07.20.2011     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It looks as if Washington Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian will use the first three games of the season to determine whether or not Keith Price is the right man for the job. Price if you remember started for an injured Jake Locker against Oregon (14-of-28, 127 yards, 1 TD). If he doesn't pan out after those first three games (vs. Eastern Washington, vs. Hawaii and at Nebraska), Sarkisian could look the way of redshirt frosh Nick Montana.

"We have to find out what he is,'' he said. "We're not going to expect him to come out and play like it's the Super Bowl the first game, but we need to find out how he plays in games and we'd rather find that out early. The reality is we are going to figure out who he is as we play those first three weeks and assess those strengths and weaknesses and really who he is and the way he plays and that will give us an idea (of the direction of the Read more

NFL Handicapping: A look at rookie quarterback candidates

07.18.2011     11:51 AM     Printer Friendly
It is estimated that as many as five NFL teams could start rookie quarterbacks in Week 1. Still a long ways to go before making a determination, but here is a look at some of candidates and the historical results of first-year starters.

Tennessee - Head coach Mike Munchak hints that he'd rather go with a veteran (see Matt Hassleback or Marc Bulger) than see Jake Locker or Rusty Smith thrown to the wolves. If anything, Munchak wants someone with experience to push and teach the young duo during training camp.

Carolina - Reports say that Read more
