NBA Handicapper Free Play: Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors

Memphis +2 at Golden State O/U 188
Recommendation: Memphis

Memphis hits the West Coast tonight to face the Warriors with revenge in mind.  Way back in December the struggling Grizzlies were trounced on their home court by the Warriors 108-82.  Of course, much has changed in the almost four months since they last played.  For starters, the Grizzlies are clearly hitting their late season stride.  They’ve been about as good as anyone in the NBA racking up a 28-9 record since January 10th.  Health is the main ingredient for the resurgence with Marc Gasol in the middle playing his usual all-around game.  The Grizzlies took some time to gel this season under new coach Dick Joerger.  Joerger tried to implement some new things in the early going, and there was an eventual give and take before the kinks were worked out.  With the playoffs approaching you can be sure no one will want to play this grit-and-grind squad.  Meanwhile, the Warriors Read more

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota Timberwolves all but out of playoff hunt

Minnesota at Memphis -7.5 O/U 197.5

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been in a perpetual state of .500 for much of the season and as a result find themselves 6.5 games out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference. Following last night’s meltdown loss to Phoenix, the team appears accepting that the postseason isn’t going to happen.

“They’re ahead of us [in the standings], obviously,” Love said. “We looked at that like this was our playoffs right there, and we lost. So this one hurts a lot more than the others.”

Asked if this was as frustrated as he’s been this season, Love said, “No question. We should have won that game, plain and simple.”

Memphis at Oklahoma City -6 O/U 194.5
Recommendation: Under

The Thunder enter Friday night’s contest with the rarest of chips on their shoulder as they’re on a three-game losing streak.  The common denominator in all three losses has been their inefficient play on the defensive end of the basketball court.  In their three losses they’ve allowed an average of 114 ppg while being outscored by 13 points all on their home court.  All the talk this week has centered on improving and playing defense with great effort.  Well, we should get that tonight against the Grizzlies.  The Grizzlies are actually an easier team to defend as they still have issues spreading the court with a consistent outside threat.  Meanwhile, we know what we’ll get from the grit-and-grind Grizzlies.  This team slows it down as much as any team in the NBA, while playing some of the best defense the league has to offer.  These two teams met just over Read more

NBA Handicapping: Oklahoma City looks to snap skid vs. Memphis

Memphis at Oklahoma City -5 O/U 193.5

Some good notes on Oklahoma City who allowed 100+ for a fourth straight game on Tuesday. Heading into tonight's game vs. Memphis, the Thunder have dropped three straight and are on a 2-6 ATS slide.

“It’s not something that we can continue to play defensively like this. But one of the things I know about our group, we’ve been together for a while, in an NBA season you’re going to have some ups and downs. You just got to stay with what we do and keep believing in each other and our guys have always done that. So I’m very confident that it’s going to continue to be that way. But we have to be better defensively. That’s three games now it’s not up to our level and we have to fix that immediately.”

NBA Handicapper Free Play: New York Knicks at New Orleans Pelicans

New York +3.5 at New Orleans O/U 196
Recommendation: New York

The Knicks showed heart and fight last night, rallying from 18 points down to take a fourth quarter lead before allowing the Grizzlies to score the final seven points of the game.  Memphis got the win, Knicks backers got the money.

Tonight, the Knicks take a major step down in class as they travel to lottery bound New Orleans.  They got the rust off last night, in sharp contrast to the Pelicans, who haven’t played in a week.  New York has dominated this series despite their long-term struggles; 9-2 ATS in the last eleven meetings including five consecutive wins on this floor in New Orleans.  This is one road venue where the Knicks enjoy a level of confidence.

We’re getting an attractive pointspread to support the Knicks tonight, in large part because the Pelicans had a solid stretch of basketball heading into the break; 8-5 in their last 13 ballgames.  Much of that success was schedule related, taking advantage of a relatively weak slate of opponents, including the Bucks, Cavs, Pistons and Magic.  At 7.5 games out of the final Read more

NBA Gambling Trends: Memphis Grizzlies have profitable profile vs. Sacramento

Sacramento at Memphis -5.5 O/U 200

The Memphis Grizzlies play host to the Sacramento Kings tonight which could well bring into play one of the Grizzlies’ best profiles. Check out these results mined from the database: When Memphis scores 100 or more points they are 55-7 (89%) straight up since the start of the 2011 season. They clock in at a hefty 47-15 (76%) against the spread in that sample. But perhaps the most eye popping figure of the bunch is their totals which have gone over at a 92% clip (56-5-1) when they score 100 or more!

Compare that to the rest of the league and you’ll see Memphis outperforms them in every facet. The league comes in at 72% straight up, 69% against the spread clip while going over at a 79% rate.
Sacramento has made some roster moves and had a little uptick in results of late but they are still a rather poor defensive team that plays at a fast tempo. The Kings give up an average of more than 104 points per game and have allowed at Read more

NBA Betting Recap: San Antonio Spurs sweep Memphis, advance to Finals

Most of the night…it felt like Memphis was ready for their summer vacation. San Antonio was in control, once again attacking weak spots when they had the ball, and denying the rim when they didn’t. But, because the Spurs haven’t quite figured out where the Memphis jugular is…a temporary lapse made it a game in the fourth quarter.

We saw something similar back in Game Two. The Spurs blew a big lead, and Memphis caught them at 85-all to force overtime. Here, the Spurs blew a big lead, and Memphis almost caught them at 89-86 with less than a minute to go. San Antonio made its free throws. Memphis never got another good look.

San Antonio 93, Memphis 86

2-Point Percentage: San Antonio 57%, Memphis 38%

3-Point Shooting: San Antonio 3/13, Memphis 5/14

Free Throws: San Antonio 12/13, Memphis 17/24

NBA Betting Recap: San Antonio Spurs take commanding 3-0 series lead

Last night we talked about how Game Two of Indiana/Miami looked so much like Game One. Tonight, we get to do the same thing in the Western Conference finals…as Game Three in Memphis looked very much like Game Two in San Antonio.

*Home Team jumps out to big lead

*Visitor rallies

*Game goes to overtime at 85-all in G2, and 86-all in G3

*Spurs know what to do in overtime

What jumped out to me watching tonight was how Memphis WASN’T Indiana. You just didn’t see the same fire in their eyes…the same sense of urgency, even though the Grizzlies were already playing with their backs to the wall tonight while Indiana was just trying to break serve. Also, Indiana made its free throws last night, while Memphis gagged way too many with their season on the line this evening.

San Antonio 104, Memphis 93 (in overtime)

2-Point Percentage: San Antonio 55%, Memphis 40%

3-Point Shooting: San Antonio Read more
