College Football Handicapping: Minnesota's o-line limps into matchup at Nebraska

11.16.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Nebraska -20 O/U 53

Minnesota's offensive line looks to be an absolute mess heading into Saturday's game at Nebraska.

“I mean at the end of the day you just want to see (the players) feel good for all the things they put into it,” Kill said. “So they felt good about it, but as a coach, we’re in the coaching deal trying to figure out what are we going to do at center. “We’re going to Lincoln, Neb. You’re already working ahead. That’s the tough thing about coaching. You don’t get a chance to step back and, boy this is great, because you gotta move forward. We got two games left and we gotta keep getting better and we gotta find a way to keep some healthy bodies out there.”

College Football Betting: Pointspread disaster Illinois gets market support

Purdue -6.5 at Illinois O/U 50.5

So Illinois hasn't covered a game against an FBS opponent since a 24-7 win over Western Michigan back on September 1. Yet for the second straight week, we've seen the towel-tossing Illini take money. Last week against Minnesota, the Golden Gophers were bet up from -2.5 to -3 but on gameday "value players" came in and swooped up all of the +3's. Illinois couldn't even manage a touchdown in the 17-3 loss. This week, Purdue opened -7 at Illinois (to be fair, it's a fairly significant adjustment with not much if any difference between the Boilermakers and Golden Gophers). They were bet up to -7.5 yesterday but a flood of Illini money poured in with the game now lined 6.5 across the board. The only positive we see with the Illini at this point? Umm, they are due?

College Football Betting Trends: Michigan 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS off loss under Hoke

Michigan -12.5 at Minnesota O/U 46.5

Small sample size but under Brady Hoke Michigan has played well after losses (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS). And the Wolverines are still in the hunt for the Legends Division title at 3-1. Nebraska is also 3-1 followed by Northwestern at 3-2. Note that it's Thursday and CRIS has not budged its opening line of 12.5 for Saturday's game at Minnesota.

"It's one of those things he's very good at," Mealer said. "Put that game behind you, learn from the mistakes and let's get on. He comes out to practice (after a loss) fired up, like we're playing for the Super Bowl or something.

"He's comes out laughing and it kind of makes players realize, 'You know what? It's not tense, oh my gosh, we lost, what are we going to do?' It's, 'All right, we're a football team, let's get back to it, let's stay Read more

Buy the Minnesota Gophers – Ah, the former days of head coach Glen Mason. Well, the Gophers just might get back to being perennial bowl participants.  Much like the Mason era, the Gophers have parlayed an easy schedule into a strong 3-0 start, which builds confidence.  Just ask Bill Snyder.  The good news is that Jerry Kill can coach football and run a program, which is way more than what Tim Brewster could do.  If you squinted hard enough last season you could see real improvement from the Gophers.  At the end of 2011 they actually covered four of their last five games, while showing vast improvement on both sides of the football.  Now, in the bigger picture, their 3-0 start looks that much better.  Last week, they lost senior quarterback MarQueis Gray to a high ankle sprain.  However, from a power rating perspective this might not be a bad deal at all.  Sophomore quarterback Max Shortell relieved him and promptly threw for three touchdowns.  A downfield passing game actually became a reality.  Look for continued improvement from Minnesota.

College Football Betting: Minnesota won't change gameplan with Shortell at QB

Syracuse at Minnesota -1.5 O/U 59

Minnesota quarterback MarQueis Gray has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Syracuse. Max Shortell, who relieved Gray last week (10-of-17, 188 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT), will start. On yesterday's Sportsmemo Podcast, handicapper Erin Rynning pointed out that Minnesota may even be better off without Gray and that no pointspread adjustment should be made for his absence.

"We're going to block the same way," he said. "We're going to run the same routes. There are certain parts of it now we can move into that game plan because Max is there that we maybe stayed away from because it wasn't MarQueis' strength. One part goes in, one part goes Read more

College Football Gambling: UNLV says freshman QB will start vs. Minnesota

08.22.2012     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Nice Sherry will be the team's Week 1 starter against Minnesota. The fact that Sherry beat out last year's starter, Caleb Herring, is a positive sign though Herring did post the worst QB rating (102.8) in the Mountain West last. UNLV is lined at 4.5un-285 wins according to 5Dimes. Some varying opinion on their Week 1 home opener against Minnesota. CRIS opened the Rebels +9 and it dropped to as low as +7. It then shot up to +10 at a few sportsbooks before settling back in at its current number of +9.

“I’m going to take chances. I’m going to throw the deep ball,” he said. “I’m going to throw the ball down the field. I’m going to extend the defense and make them respect the deep ball and respect the deep routes.”

“He keeps improving. He has a big arm,” Hauck said. “He has improved his understanding of what it will take to get the job done. We feel he gives us a chance to be competitive Read more

College Football Betting: Minnesota tries to rebuild in Kill's second season

08.02.2012     02:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was a rough year for Minnesota's Jerry Kill. He struggled with his health and the fact that he probably had more talent to work with at Northern Illinois. Kill has a strong record of turning programs around. At Southern Illinois, he was 1-10 and 4-8 his first two seasons and then went on a 50-14 run. At Northern Illinois, he inherited a team off of a 2-10 season and got them to a bowl the very next year. He closed out his tenure in DeKalb with an 11-3 mark and a 27-point bowl victory. That dramatic of a turnaround in the Big Ten won't be as easy but Kill can coach and we expect there to be some improvements.

It looks as if the Golden Gophers are committing to MarQueis Gray at quarterback. He's been around the program for four years and while proving himself as a runner (966 yards) he's never really amounted to much as a passer (50% completition). According to offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, the team is focused more on improving within the system rather that giving it a complete overhaul. As for Kill, he used the dreaded Read more

NIT Betting Notes: Madison Square Garden has a way of holding offenses in check

03.27.2012     12:21 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some notes regarding tonight’s two semifinal matchups in the NIT. Bettors who have been following these secondary tournaments have either been making money playing OVERS or living under a rock. But based on some of the historical results, I refrained from pulling the trigger on tonight’s two games. In fact, I made half-unit plays on the UNDER after some research. You’ll notice that like clockwork, both games were bet OVER the total just like every other NIT, CBI and CIT game. Here are some of the numbers I found…

The last 14 semifinal matchups at Madison Square Garden produced the following game scores: 123, 119, 131, 135 (OT), 138, 126, 150, 144, 125, 135, 141, 109, 142, and 128. That comes out to about 132 points per game. Only two of those contests went over 143 (Minnesota-Washington total) and one over 149 (UMass-Stanford total).

In terms of O/U numbers, I went back the last 10 semifinal matchups and got 3-7 O/U. But perhaps even more impressive than 70% UNDERS is the manner in which they cashed. The seven UNDERS were by margins of 22, 10.5, 15, 12, 18, 20.5 and 27! That is crazy and certainly not random. And the situations were Read more

Minnesota at Miami-FL
Recommendation: First half over 63.5

I expect a lot more intensity and effort from Miami after its lethargic performance against Valpo in the first round of the NIT. From watching the game, it was clear both teams had no interest in being there as Miami finally woke up in the second half with 42 points. Minnesota should do a better job at grabbing Miami's attention. The Golden Gophers played very inspired ball in their first round win over La Salle. They came out looking to push the pace, took a first half lead and slowed down the pace in the second half en route to a 70-61 win. With the exception of the win over Valpo, Miami has shown the ability to score and play at a faster pace in Coral Gables. In eight ACC home games, the Hurricanes scored 77, 78, 74, 64, 65, 69, 73 and 76 points. Both squads are solid defensively, but like a lot of these secondary tournaments, the first halves tend to play out loose as they feel one another out. Read more

Minnesota at La Salle -3 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Over

A common thought process with these non-NCAA postseason tournaments is to lean OVER the total, and that is certainly what I see here. When you only have a day or two to prepare for your opponent and have limited tapes of their games, there is just no way that you are going to be ready for what they run on offense. That is a stark contrast to league games, where the coaches run the same stuff year after year and by the end of the season when a point guard calls a play, the defense knows what’s coming. Throw in the fact that it is hard for teams to play with the same intensity on the defensive end against an unknown opponent and it is easy to see why these games are usually higher scoring. In this matchup we have a team, La Salle, that tries to run all the time against a team that has shown they are willing to run against faster opponents, Minnesota. I definitely think that both teams will be Read more
