Super Bowl LI Gambling: Prop bets give bettors a great chance for big profits

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The stage is set for Sunday's Super Bowl LI in Houston. The Las Vegas and offshore consensus opening line was New England -3 and it's held put save for a few shops adjusting on juice.  The total opened 57 and has since been bet up to 58.5 offshore and 59 in Vegas. This is the sixth Super Bowl that will feature the league's top scoring offense (Atlanta) against the league's top scoring defense NFL (New England). The top ranked scoring defense won four of the five previous games; the most recent in 2013 when Seattle demolished Denver 43-8.

As mentioned in previous columns, New England's gaudy numbers were assisted in a big way by the league's weakest strength of schedule. The Patriots also faced a slew of lower-tiered quarterbacks. But against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were projected to be their toughest offensive opponent to-date, New England allowed a modest 368 yards and 17 points en route to a dominating 36-17 win in the AFC Championship. Atlanta's offensive output (420 ypg, 6.7 ypp) was in no way fluky. The Falcons faced one of the toughest defensive slates in the league and routinely were able to move the ball seemingly at will. The big question is can Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Buffalo Sabres at Dallas Stars

Buffalo +125 at Dallas O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Buffalo

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions as we approach the All-Star break with the surging Buffalo Sabres taking on the Dallas Stars. Buffalo has won three straight games; all of them in overtime and two of them in come-from-behind fashion. The Sabres have shown a healthy dose of resilience during this recent run and an ignited offense with 11 goals in their last three games. Jack Eichel talking about the success: "It's great to see the way we played. We stuck with it for 60 minutes. We got down two goals on the road against a really good hockey team and were able to find a way to get it to overtime and win it. It says a lot about the resiliency of this team. It's nice to be a part of games like that." On the flip side, the Stars are routinely finding ways to lose games as they limp into the All-Star Break 1-5 and 3-9 skids. Dallas blew a third period lead on Saturday night against Washington and followed it up with a 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota on Tuesday. The problems remain the same for Dallas; weak defense and suspect goaltending whether it’s Kari Lehtonen Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at Pittsburgh Penguins

St. Louis at Pittsburgh -215 O/U 6
Recommendation: Over

‎One of the best clubs in the NHL looks to keep its winning ways going tonight as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the St. Louis Blues. The defending Stanley Cup champs are on a four-game winning streak that included an astronomical 24 goals. Pittsburgh leads the league with 3.67 goals per game and have fired off 30 or more shots in nine of its last 11 contests. Forwards Conor Sheary and Evgeni Malkin have been on fire over their last 10 games with a combined 16 goals and 11 assists. Sidney Crosby had three goals and 10 assists within that same span.

St. Louis has been struggling of late, dropping five of its last seven contests; 28 goals allowed in those five losses. Starting goaltender Jake Allen has given up 14 goals in his last four appearances and has been pulled in four of his last six starts. Head coach Ken Hitchcock was forced to start Carter Hutton in net for three games and GM (and former Hall-of-Fame goalie) Martin Brodeur went so far as to call up Pheonix Copley from AHL to make his first career start in Saturday's 5-3 loss at Winnipeg. Detroit +100 at Buffalo O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Detroit

The two cellar-dwellers in the Atlantic Division do battle tonight as the Buffalo Sabres host the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings have struggled with injuries to key players for most of the year but the loss of veteran goaltender Jimmy Howard has given way to the emergence of 25-year-old Jared Coreau. The rookie netminder has posted a 5-1-1 mark with a 3.04 gaa and a .901 save pct. While those marks aren't worthy of a Calder Trophy, Coreau seems to be a slight upgrade over Howard, who had lost his last four starts before going on IR back on December 20, and Petr Mrazek, who went 1-4 in his last five starts. Offensively, veteran Thomas Vanek has been picking up the slack left by injured forwards Niklas Kronwall and Darren Helm by scoring six goals and adding another six assists over his last 10 games. The 33-year-old who spent his first nine seasons in Buffalo leads Detroit in goals (12) and points (31). Buffalo has lost three of its last four games and has struggled over the years with Detroit, losing eight of the last 10 meetings, including 1-8 at home over the last three seasons. Washington at St. Louis +110 O/U 5
Recommendation: St. Louis

I like to bet against a team that just saw an extended winning streak come to an end and that is what I’m doing here with the Capitals as they saw their nine-game win streak end in a wild, back and forth, high scoring loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night. It’s hard for teams to avoid an emotional and mental letdown in their following game. A perfect example is Columbus who lost 5-4 to the Rangers after their massive 16-game winning streak was snapped. St. Louis is coming off a 6-4 home loss to Ottawa on Tuesday night but that was a tough spot for the Blues as they were playing their fourth game in sixth nights; all of them with travel between games. St. Louis has had issues with their goaltending of late with Jake Allen struggling and Carter Hutton hammered for five goals in that loss to the Senators. I’d expect the Blues to give Allen another chance tonight and I think he will be very motivated to deliver a strong performance. Allen notched a shutout against Washington in his lone previous appearance against the Capitals. Look for St. Louis to play with much Read more

Detroit at Dallas -145 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Detroit has found its offense in recent games. The return of Justin Abdelkader and defenseman Mike Green (a better offensive defenseman than a defensive one) from injury has resulted in 3+ goals in eight of their L10 games (6-3-1 O/U). However, Detroit is struggling at the other end of the ice due to subpar goaltending and defensive play; injuries to stalwart defensemen Brendan Smith and Niklas Kronwall a main reason why. The Red Wings have surrendered 34, 35 and 43 shots on goal in their last three games and that spells trouble in terms of keeping your goals against numbers down. Dallas remains a below average defensive team. They’ve given up three goals per game on the season which ranks 28th in the NHL and making matters worse for the Stars is the fact they just lost one of their better young defensemen in Jamie Oleksiak to injury. From a season-long perspective, neither team has trended strong towards the over (Detroit 18-17 O/U, Dallas 19-23 O/U) but injuries and current form suggest tonight’s game will feature plenty of shots and more than a few that hit the back of the net. NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Winnipeg Jets

Calgary +120 at Winnipeg O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Winnipeg returns home after a three-game road trip where the club picked up two wins against Tampa Bay and Florida but suffered a giant loss when star rookie Patrik Laine was blindsided in Saturday's 4-3 defeat to Buffalo and is now out indefinitely with a concussion. The 18-year old phenom led the club with 21 goals (3rd NHL) and without both their best forward and top defenseman, Tyler Myers, who is sidelined with an upper-body injury, the rest of the Jets line-up will need to step up in a big way. Calgary just split a home-and-home affair against division rival Vancouver and have now won four of their last six games on the road as well as holding a 5-2 mark in their last seven overall. The Flames have also won five of their last seven meetings with Winnipeg and the Jets are just 2-5 in their last seven home games. It's never easy to come home after a long distance trip, but now that Winnipeg is seriously short handed without their young star, this is a really tough task against a fast and similarly physical Flames unit. At a solid plus price tag, this is a ripe spot to pick Calgary this Read more

Montreal at Nashville -125 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

While they are still atop the Atlantic Division with 50 points, the Canadiens have been struggling recently, losing four of their last five contests. Since their 10-1 blowout victory over Colorado back on December 12, the Habs are just 3-6 SU and have scored three or fewer goals in eight of those nine contests. Goaltender Carey Price hasn't looked as sharp as usual, allowing four goals in three of his last five starts along with a .897 save pct. in his last 10 starts.

Nashville also has some goaltending issues to figure out as its usually steady netminder Pekka Rinne has been lackluster losing six of his last eight starts and yielding three or more goals in seven of those games. His fellow countryman backup, rookie Jussi Saros has won two of his last three and in the process picked up his first career shutout by, blanking division rival St. Louis on 25 shots in a 4-0 victory.

Both clubs have plenty of offensive talent. The Habs are led by Max Pacioretty who has seven goals and four assists over his last 10 contests. For the Preds, forwards Mike Fisher and Filip Forsberg have Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Chicago Blackhawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Winnipeg at Chicago -160 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Central Division foes face off at the "Madhouse on Madison" tonight as the Chicago Blackhawks host the Winnipeg Jets. The Hawks gain a pair of key players back from injury off the short holiday break as forwards Artem Anisimov and Marian Hossa are both scheduled to return to the lineup. The 36-year-old Hossa leads Chicago with 16 goals while the Russian sniper Anisimov has 27 points and is a key piece of the club's top line along with Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane. Winnipeg has won three of its last four games and despite losing six of the previous 10 meetings versus Chicago, they've given the Blackhawks some match-up troubles from a size perspective. Former Hawk Dustin Byfuglien leads the charge along with defenseman Adam Pardy in hits, using their physical style to push around the skillful, offensive-minded Hawks. These two teams have been under machines all season with Winnipeg going 3-9-1 O/U in 13 division contests and Chicago on a 6-13-4 O/U run versus Western Conference opposition. Adding to it is a 3-7 O/U run over the last 10 meetings. I anticipate both squads to start off slow Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Deroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit +135 at Carolina O/U 5
Recommendation: Detroit

Two Eastern Conference clubs hook-up down in Raleigh tonight as the Detroit Red Wings travel to face the Hurricanes of Carolina. Detroit heads to the road for 6 of their next 7 games, which should bring a welcome change after the club went 1-4 on their recent 5-game home stand. Detroit's offense had been stagnant as of late until their six-goal outburst in Saturday's win over Anaheim, led by a hat trick from winger Thomas Tatar. Captain Henrik Zetterberg was held to just one point during the home stand and defenseman Mike Green, who leads Wings blue-liners with 18 points, is questionable for this contest after suffering a lower body injury last game.

The Red Wings are 8-3-1 away from the Motor City as they prepare to play a Hurricanes squad that has picked up at least 1 point in 9 consecutive home games, going 8-0-1 during that span at the RBC Center, despite losing 6 of their last 10 games overall. Both clubs have shown some struggles to remain consistent on offense. Outside of an 8-6 win over Vancouver on Dec. 13, Carolina has scored 3 or fewer goals in 15 of their last 16 contests.
