NHL Handicapper Free Play: New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes

New Jersey at Carolina -110 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

It is generally wise to stay away when two teams are performing poorly in the standings like the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes.  The Devils have gone 2-8 in their last ten games while the Hurricanes have gone 3-7.  Upon looking deeper into the way these teams are losing games tells a bit of a different story.  I have been impressed with the Devils’ effort and grit despite being without a much of their lineup.  Four top forwards in Mike Cammalleri, Patrik Elias, Martin Havlat, and Travis Zajac have been out or continue to be out for the Devils.  This has left a team that has averaged just two goals in their last ten games looking for ways to score.  The Hurricanes meanwhile will be without forward Eric Staal who is nursing a foot injury.  Carolina's offensive production is on par with the Devils with just 15 goals in their last eight games.  Both of these teams are riding under the total trends with the Hurricanes 0-4 O/U and the Devils 3-8-1 O/U.  This game will have very limited offensive explosiveness and plenty of safe defensive Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Vancouver Canucks at Pittsburgh Penguins

Vancouver +125 at Pittsburgh O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Vancouver

The Vancouver Canucks have been on my NHL card multiple times this season including in their most recent game when I cashed a 20* in their 4-3 road win against Washington. The Canucks are surging and playing with tons of confidence under new head coach Willie Desjardins who has loosened the reins on this team and allowed them to get back to playing a more speed driven attack. Vancouver has also been road warriors notching a truly impressive 10-4 record. They will be catching the Pittsburgh Penguins at perhaps their most vulnerable time. The Penguins are dealing with a rash of key injuries as defenseman Kris Letang has been placed on the IR with a groin injury, forward Chris Kunitz is out with a fractured foot and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo will be serving the first game of his two-game suspension. Those recent absences don’t even include Beau Bennett and Pascal Dupuis; two very good offensive weapons for the Penguins who remain out due to injury. That puts more pressure on the shoulders of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to keep the offense humming despite the losses of some key Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Colorado Avalanche at Arizona Coyotes

Colorado +115 at Arizona O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

Colorado heads to Arizona tonight with both teams underperforming in the standings.  The Avalanche have to be the bigger disappointment of the two as no one predicted the Coyotes to make much noise in the West.  Despite the teams taking up two of the last three spots in the Western Conference, one team is heading in the right direction while the other remains stagnant.  The Avalanche dug themselves into a pretty big hole early in the season, losing six of their first seven games.  But they look to have righted the ship with three wins in their last four games and perhaps a season defining moment in their come-from-behind victory on Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  I am always looking for positive momentum and confidence building situations with good teams, and it looks like we have just that after the Avs mounted a two-goal comeback in the second and third periods to win 4-3.  They are still playing without a few key players in their lineup, but they have been plugging and playing just fine with their call ups from the AHL.  Arizona has been Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Florida Panthers at Los Angeles Kings

Florida at Los Angeles -185 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Two of the biggest under teams in the NHL meet up tonight in LA as the Florida Panthers visit the Kings.  These teams have played their last five meetings under the total.  The Panthers have proven throughout the year that scoring goals consistently is a tough task but they also limit their opponents on opportunities.  Yes, Florida has been great offensively over its last four games, but the pace and matchup tonight against the Kings will send them back to reality.  The Panthers not respond well to teams that grind along the boards.  The Kings are the prototypical grind-it-out squad that beat you with depth and strength along the boards.  Los Angeles averages just 2.44 gpg and allowed only 2.11 gpg so don't expect the Kings to run over the Panthers either.  The return of Kopitar into the Kings lineup has helped on offensive end of the ice, but more importantly on the defensive end as well.  Having that big body presence in the lineup makes this defense even more formidable.  Both teams are relatively healthy so I expect a tight checking, low scoring Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Winnipeg Jets at Montreal Canadiens

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Winnipeg +130 at Montreal O/U 5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

I think there are a couple live underdogs in NHL action tonight and the soaring Winnipeg Jets are one of them. Winnipeg is riding an impressive eight game point streak (6-0-2) after squeezing out a 2-1 shootout victory at Ottawa on Saturday. The Jets have not lost in regulation since a 4-2 defeat to Tampa Bay on October 24. The reason is they have really tightened things up defensively allowing one goal or less in five of their last six games. Winnipeg dealt with a few key injuries early in the season, most notably to Evander Kane who is arguably their best player, but since getting him back in the lineup, we’ve seen this team play their best hockey.

Another reason for the impressive run is the resurgence of much maligned goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. He has been labelled as a mediocre and underachieving goalie for much of his career but there is no doubt he is in a zone right now. Pavelec posted his worst goals against average (3.01) and save percentage (.901) in four seasons last year but he has taken his performance to a new level. Pavelec's only two losses in his past seven Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins

Florida at Boston -200 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

When you think of the Boston Bruins you think of hard-nosed physical hockey with a lot of depth. Despite the recent injuries they've had, they still are playing with that tenacity that has made them successful.  They've had success so far this season against the weaker opponents in the NHL and we should see more of the same tonight against a Florida Panthers team that struggles to score goals.  Florida has played three straight 2-1 games, while managing to win two of the three.  The Panthers have also allowed an NHL-low 17 regulation goals-against which has resulted in 7 of their 9 games going under the total.  Though not as strong, the Bruins also trend under the total of 4-7 O/U. Both teams dealing with offensive injuries which should assist in this game going under the current posted total of 5.

NHL player linked to illegal sports betting ring

10.31.2014     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
Current Minnesota Wild winger Thomas Vanek has been linked to an illegal sports betting operation.

That payment — apparently a salary check that was endorsed and handed over to cover wagers — was made at the same time hockey superstar Thomas Vanek played for the Islanders, said local attorney James Wolford.

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Buffalo Sabres at Toronto Maple Leafs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buffalo at Toronto O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Buffalo +1.5 -155

It's never a great idea to lay big juice in the NHL, and that is what teams will be doing all season against the Buffalo Sabres.  The sportsbooks have made it known that they're not afraid to make teams -300 or greater favorites against the Sabres as evidenced by Buffalo's latest West Coast trip.  Buffalo's is coming off a solid 2-1 victory in San Jose on Saturday afternoon. The Sabres come back East to face the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in what should be a tight checking affair.  Buffalo coach Ted Nolan is happy with his team's progression despite their record, ''The last three games in particular, our work ethic is improving, as a result our play is getting better. One thing we learned, hopefully, is if you work, good things happen. That's the way we're going to have to win this season.''  Toronto is struggling almost as much as Buffalo to score goals.  They are just 1-4 on home ice this season and have mustered only 2 goals in their last two home games.  Anytime you can get a goal and a half for this cheap of a price against a team struggling to score Read more
