NHL Playoff Series Free Betting Pick: Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Columbus +110 vs. Washington
Series Recommendation: Columbus

The Washington Capitals have been a perennial playoff team in the Alex Ovechkin era since 2008 as the Capitals have made the playoffs in nine of their last 10 seasons but they have not advanced beyond the second round in their previous nine playoff appearances during that span. Regular season success has not equated to playoff success for this team and that is despite multiple coaches being behind the bench. Washington will look to finally shake those playoff demons this time around but I think they will be in tough to even advance past the very opening round matched up against a Columbus Blue Jackets squad that played its best hockey in the final month of the season winning 13 of their last 16 regular season games excluding their final game against Nashville in which head coach John Tortorella opted to rest most of his top players in a meaningless season finale. Washington head coach Barry Trotz is rolling the dice with his goaltending entering the playoffs opting to go with Philipp Grubauer in net who had a good season but has no playoff experience over veteran netminder Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Arizona Coyotes at Calgary Flames

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona +110 at Calgary O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Arizona

The Calgary Flames snapped an ugly 7-game losing streak by beating Edmonton 3-2 in their last game but they were very lucky to do so. The Flames got out to a early lead because of terrible goaltending by Edmonton netminder Cam Talbot and had to hang on for dear life to win as the Oilers dominated the last two periods especially the third period but just couldn't find a way to tie up that game. Betting against Calgary repeatedly since they were officially eliminated from playoff contention has been a staple of my recent handicapping in the NHL and I will try my chances once again betting against a demoralized and injury riddled Calgary team tonight minus TJ Brodie and Travis Hamonic two key starting defensemen on their blue line as well as forwards Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Kris Versteeg. Flames goalie Mike Smith finally played one of his better games in net for Calgary in that win over Edmonton on Saturday night but he's been lacking consistency and the ability to follow up a good start with another one all season long. On the flip side, the full season record Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh -225 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh Team Total Over

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been one of the top scoring teams in the NHL for years and they are right near the top again this season 5th in the league averaging 3.3 goals per game. The Penguins got even more dynamic and explosive offensively at this year’s trade deadline when they acquired veteran center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators. After a slow start with the Penguins, he’s collected points in six straight games. Pittsburgh has three lines and nine forwards that form one of the deepest forward groups in the league and it has been on full display in recent weeks with the Penguins scoring 3+ goals in eight of their last 10 games and four or more on five occasions during that span. Pittsburgh should be able to light the lamp against a weak Detroit Red Wings squad that has been porous defensively and gotten unreliable goaltending on a nightly basis. Detroit will be playing the second night of back-to-back games here as well and that should make for a bit of a fatigued blue line for this game which is often when mistakes happen and Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Jersey Devils at San Jose Sharks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey +140 at San Jose O/U 5.5
Recommendation: New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils have been playing some solid hockey on their current road trip. They’ve won three of their first four games on this current road swing and they beat three probable playoff teams in the process notching road victories at Nashville, Vegas and Los Angeles. They were a bit worn down in a 4-2 loss to Anaheim on Sunday night playing the second night of back-to-back games but the Devils have been getting better contributions offensively from players other than Taylor Hall during their recent run while the goaltending for them on most nights from Keith Kinkaid has been really good. San Jose is commanding a significant price tag here laying -160 at home and they have won 4 games in a row entering this contest but the Sharks have done that despite some key injuries on their team. Joe Thornton is out indefinitely with a knee injury, Melker Karlsson and Joonas Donskoi are both banged up and not a sure thing to play tonight and one of their most important defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic departed San Jose’s last game with a chest injury and is Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Nashville Predators

Winnipeg at Nashville -185 O/U 6
Recommendation: Over

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Winnipeg and Nashville have gone Over the total in four of the last five head-to-head meetings including all three previous matchups this season between the Jets and Predators which had final scores of 5-3, 6-4 and 6-5. All three previous games between them on the season have been filled with pace and dangerous scoring chances and the teams combined for 30+ shots in most of those games. Winnipeg’s offense has taken a bit of a recent hit with the absence of Mark Scheifele due to an upper body injury but the Jets have plenty of depth up front with one of the deepest group of forwards and some of the best four line depth in the entire NHL including the likes of Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers. Nashville has been very good offensively and acquiring Kyle Turris at the center ice position from the Ottawa Senators earlier this season bolstered their offensive potency even more. The Predators have found the back of the net with regularity in recent games scoring 3+ goals in 8 of their last 10 games. Winnipeg has made the Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado +115 at Chicago O/U 6
Recommendation: Colorado

The Chicago Blackhawks are not the better of these two teams nor are they in a quality scheduling spot for this matchup against the Colorado Avalanche and that has me backing the road underdog in this matchup. Colorado is in a battle for one of the two Wildcard playoff spots in the Western Conference and are in need of victories at this stage of the season. The Avalanche have won three of their last four games and the only loss came to the defending Western Conference champs Nashville 4-3 in OT on Sunday afternoon. Nathan MacKinnon is in the midst of a career season with the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon has put up six goals and six assists during his five game point streak to boost his NHL best individual scoring average to 1.35 points per game. He’s already set career highs in goals and points and this Colorado team pretty much goes as their star Nathan MacKinnon does who forms a dynamic top line alongside Mikko Rantanen and captain Gabriel Landeskog. Colorado has also received some solid secondary scoring contributions from Matt Nieto who has goals in three Read more

New Jersey at Pittsburgh -205 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

The Pittsburgh Penguins are red hot having won six of their last seven games overall and 12 straight at home and their potent offensive ability is a big reason why. Pittsburgh has tallied a whopping 42 goals in their last nine games combined averaging well over four goals per game during this stretch. The Pens already had a bunch of goal scoring options in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin just to name a few on this loaded squad but they added to it prior to Monday’s trade deadline acquiring center Derick Brassard in a deal with the Ottawa Senators. Brassard brings his 18 goals and 38 points in over 50 games this season to bolster this already lethal Pittsburgh squad even more. The Penguins will face New Jersey’s backup goalie Keith Kinkaid tonight who has been thrust into regular duty with the injury absence of Cory Schneider. Kinkaid has very porous numbers in his career against Pittsburgh entering tonight with a 3.69 GAA and .891 save percentage in 4 games played against the Penguins. Pittsburgh should have the potential to get to their Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado +100 at Vancouver O/U 6
Recommendation: Colorado

The Vancouver Canucks trounced a red hot Boston Bruins team by a score of 6-1 in their most recent game on Saturday night but the final score was misleading. Vancouver got out to an early lead but Boston fired away 45 shots on goal compared to just 23 shots for Vancouver but the Canucks were able to bury the majority of their quality scoring chances in the victory. They will be up against a Colorado Avalanche team that looked quite a bit disjointed in their 4-2 loss at home to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. That game featured a return to the lineup for the Avs leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon from a shoulder injury but it didn’t result in a win nor did it result in a sharp performance from the Avalanche. Colorado head coach Jared Bednar called out his team to play with more urgency after the loss to Edmonton as the Avalanche try to make a push for the playoffs: “We've got to dial our game up just like everybody else is this time of year, and we haven't done that yet recently. We should be getting more and more urgency out of our group now because we are starting to Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Blackhawks at Vegas Golden Knights

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Vegas O/U 6
Recommendation: Vegas -1.5 puck line

Vegas is off a very rare home loss (19-6 YTD) on Sunday to the Philadelphia Flyers by a score of 4-1 but the Golden Knights have been a resilient group all season and have consistently responded well after a poor performance as evidenced by their 14-5 record off of a single loss. The Golden Knights outshot the Flyers despite coming up short on the scoreboard but the team felt they were not creating enough quality scoring chances nor were they making life uncomfortable enough for the opposing goaltender something the team has vowed to try and correct for this home game tonight against the Blackhawks. Chicago is in freefall mode currently a shell of the team they have been for most of the last decade in which they have been a perennial Stanley Cup contender. The Blackhawks have lost six straight games entering this contest tonight and now face the arduous task of playing their third road game in four nights against a much better and highly motivated hockey team. Chicago has been outscored by Minnesota and Arizona in the first two games of this road swing by a combined score of Read more
