NHL Handicapping: Dallas Stars are a bet on squad heading into season

10.06.2014     01:04 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL will drop the puck on the 2014-15 season later this week which gives me time to break down a few teams in the Western Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. The conference was a beast last season and I expect it to remain highly competitive with several legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Buy the Dallas Stars
Head coach Lindy Ruff did a tremendous job in his first season behind the bench in Big D as the Stars played their best hockey down the stretch and in the playoffs where they gave top seed Anaheim all kinds of fits before falling 4-2. Expect them to continue to build on that success this season. The scoring was led by the incomparable duo of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, who each scored at least 34 goals and 79 points last season. Dallas’ biggest shortcoming was it lacked supplemental scoring but GM Jim Nill has done a lot to change that by trading for Jason Spezza and signing Ales Hemsky. Spezza is an injury waiting to happen but if he can stay healthy (a big if), he will add much needed secondary scoring to lend support to Seguin, Benn and Valeri Nichushkin who impressed in his rookie Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Washington Capitals Season O/U Points

Washington Capitals
Season Over/Under Points 88.5
Recommendation: Over

Last week my blog centered around the Florida Panthers and my recommendation to go Under their season point/win total.  This week with baseball winding down and few games on the card I decided to once again focus on a specific NHL team and see if we can beat the market.

The Washington Capitals come into the 2014-15 with new coach Barry Trotz at the helm.  The departure of Adam Oates behind the bench and the addition of longtime Nashville Predators coach Trotz has me immediately looking to back a talented yet underachieving Capitals team.  The past seven seasons have seen the Caps finish with greater than 88.5 points (90, 97.4 extrapolated in a shorten season, 92, 107, 121, 108, and 94 points).  Washington has been on a downward turn the past three seasons, but a change in system and style will catapult them back into the top of the Read more

Florida Panthers
Season Over/Under Points 72.5
Recommendation: Under

With the NHL upon us, I decided to supplant my weekly MLB free play with an NHL season over/under points recommendation.  Some sportsbooks have early season point totals up and available.  I see immediate value with taking the Florida Panthers under.  This is a franchise that is complete disarray.  The change of ownership has done nothing to put the city of Sunrise, Florida at ease that one, they will win, and two, that they will remain in Florida.  The owners are speaking out of both sides of their mouth.  Despite the recent letter to fans that the team will remain in Florida, co-owner Doug Cifu said recently in August, "The arena and the team have lost a significant amount of money year over year for the last 10-plus years and the current business model is not sustainable."  The doesn’t sound very positive to me coupled with the face that this team is young, inexperienced, and prone to mistakes.  The trade for Roberto Luongo and the signing of Willie Mitchell is just a band aid to cover up an otherwise dreadful Read more

NHL is reportedly headed to Las Vegas

08.27.2014     06:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL in Las Vegas? The NHL in Las Vegas! Reports are saying a team in Sin City is a "done deal" as the league looks to expands in the not-so-distant future. The Las Vegas Coolers, Blackjacks, and Dice were some of the team names Twitter came up with last night. We’ll go ahead and tell you right now that the nickname won’t have anything to do with gambling -- even though all three of those are pretty cool. Bank on something that relates to the desert, Area 51, the heat, or cowboys.

Sources close to the situation have indicated Las Vegas is a done deal, the only thing to be determined being which owner will be entitled to proclaim that he brought the first major league sports franchise to Sin City.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Golden Nugget's College Football Games of the Year

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The sportsbetting world here in Las Vegas has shifted into full summer mode over the past week.  The NBA and NHL Finals are now in the rear view mirror with the Spurs and Kings crowned as champions, leaving a modest sportsbetting void even in the midst of the World Cup.

Once the Finals end, my focus shifts towards the upcoming football season, and I’m certainly not alone in that regard.  Last week I wrote about NFL Season Win totals that have begun to proliferate in Las Vegas (still lagging behind offshore, though).  Part 2 of that article will come next week in this space.

This past Friday, we saw another clear sign that football is just around the corner, as the Golden Nugget released their lines on 200 College Football Games of the Year.  These GOY pointspreads were posted on about 10-15 high profile marquee games a week, beginning with the Texas A&M-South Carolina and Boise State-Ole Miss showdowns on Thursday, August 28th, while running through the likes of Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Kansas State-Baylor and Army-Navy in December.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the Nugget has been the first place in Vegas Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins

NY Rangers at Pittsburgh -165 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Game 7 tonight in the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins should be a dogfight.  The Rangers have battled back and won the last two games after falling behind 3-1 in the series.  Momentum seems to be on the Rangers side as they head into Pittsburgh as +140 underdogs.  Game 7's have been particularly kind to the New York Rangers as they have won their last four series deciders with the O/U going 0-3-1 as well.  This is however one of the toughest Game 7 scenarios they’ve faced in recent memory. The Penguins have been in this situation before and have the experience to get back on their horse and put together an elite effort tonight.  Pittsburgh hasn't played many Game 7's in recent years, but their three most recent has seen them go 2-1 with both wins going under the total. This has been a tale of two series as the NY Rangers really turned things around and rallied behind Martin St. Louis for Game 5 and Game 6 right after his mother had passed away. Overall I am expecting a very low scoring game. We will see very Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Anaheim at Los Angeles -140 O/U 5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Anaheim Ducks played fairly well in Games 1 and 2 of this series yet they trail the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 heading into the Staples Center in for tonight’s Game 3. Anaheim held the lead for most of Game 1 but Marian Gaborik scored the tying goal with several seconds left in the third period to force OT where eventually the Kings won. In Game 2, Anaheim poured on the pressure and outshot the Kings 37-17 but could not score the timely goal required to tie the game in the third and LA was able to pull away 3-1. Anaheim didn’t play very well on the road in its first round series against Dallas going 1-2 – the lone win was fortunate as the Stars coughed up a late 4-2 lead with less than two minutes left. Los Angeles is a veteran team with Stanley Cup winning experience and I trust them to step on the throat of the opposition. The Kings jumped out to four straight 3-0 series leads in the 2012 Playoffs. They did the same in the first round last year against St. Louis. LA is the better of these two teams and it has shown in the fact they’ve won two games without playing Read more

Pro sports teams partnering with gambling entities

05.07.2014     12:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Article in Sports Illustrated about to evolving relationship between professional sports teams and casinos and online gambling sites.

Earlier this year the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia 76ers signed sponsorship agreements with PartyPoker, an online portal owned by bwin, operator of a large Internet sports book. Around the same time Major League Baseball -- having last year dismissed fantasy leagues as "a flip of the coin" akin to gambling -- quietly partnered with DraftKings, which bills itself as "Daily Fantasy Sports for Cash." In 2012 the NFL lifted its ban on teams accepting some advertisements from casinos. The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury have a jersey sponsorship deal with an Arizona casino, while the Connecticut Sun play home games at Mohegan Sun.
