NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Washington Capitals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado +180 at Washington O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche look to stay perfect as they head to Washington to take on the Capitals. The Avs are coming off a 4-3 overtime win over defending Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh thanks to a late goal by Gabriel Landeskog to send the contest to an extra frame, and another score to win it less than 90 seconds into OT. The Capitals have split their first two games on the year, losing to the aforementioned Penguins in a shootout and defeating the New York Islanders on Saturday in a tight 2-1 battle backed by a strong performance by goaltender Braden Holtby. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has picked right up where he left off last year, stopping 49 of the 52 shots he's faced in his pair of starts.

Under new coach Jared Bednar, the Avalanche aren't trying to do more than they are capable of. When Patrick Roy was the bench boss, Colorado was looking to play very fast at both ends of the ice, and their defense just simply wasn't up to the task over the previous couple of seasons. Nowadays, the Avs still play up-tempo at times, but they know when to dial it back, especially Read more

NHL Gambling: Colorado Avalanche under 88.5, Carolina Hurricanes over 80.5

Be sure to check out Alex B. Smith’s entire NHL Season Point Totals Report. It’s available here for only $59. Below are two selections that just missed the cut but worthy of a wager.

Colorado Avalanche UNDER 88.5 Points
The Patrick Roy experiment is finally over as the head coach left the club in early August. He left former teammate and GM Joe Sakic to scramble for a new hire. Sakic brought in Jared Bednar who was the bench boss for Colorado’s farm club in Cleveland that won the Calder Cup. Bednar’s fellow Lake Erie assistant Nolan Pratt will be also around as the pair already appears to be clicking well with the wealth of young talent the Avs possess. However, this squad’s defensive issues and shaky goaltending tandem of Semyon Varlamov and Calvin Pickard will make it extremely tough to top the .500 mark. I project a similar output to last year’s 82 points as the Avalanche should battle Winnipeg for the Central Division cellar.

Carolina Hurricanes OVER 80.5 Points

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks

Los Angeles at San Jose -135 O/U 5
Recommendation: San Jose

The NHL drops the puck on the 2016-17 season tonight as defending Western Conference champs the San Jose Sharks host their hated rivals the Los Angeles Kings. The last time we saw these two clubs battle was in the first round of last year’s playoffs with San Jose cruising to a 4-1 series victory en route to their first ever Campbell Bowl Trophy and Stanley Cup Final appearance. Los Angeles is starting off the campaign a bit short handed up front. Forward Tanner Pearson is out while serving a two-game suspension for an illegal hit to the head in a preseason game, veteran winger Marian Gaborik will miss due to a foot injury, and center Nick Shore questionable after missing some exhibition games with what is believed to be a concussion. San Jose returns the bulk of its key players that led them to the finals and added a pair of solid possession forwards in David Schlemko and Mikkel Boedker. While the home team has lost nine of the last 10 meetings between these clubs, the team that lost in the Stanley Cup Final the previous season has gone 5-1 in the next season's debut over the last six Read more

NHL Handicapping: Los Angeles Kings OVER 98.5 points

Los Angeles Kings OVER 98.5 Points (-110 at Westgate SuperBook)

The Los Angeles Kings returned to the postseason before a quick first round exit at the hands of division rival San Jose. With 102 points (one of three Best Bet winners), the Kings nearly won the Pacific Division over Anaheim. But while they dominated during the first half of the campaign (25-11-2), their lack of depth on defense and inconsistent offensive productions proved to be a key weaknesses late in the year and in the playoffs. All-Star Drew Doughty (14 goals, 51 points) logged heavy minutes every night and led the league in shifts per game with 33.3 and ranked third in average time on ice with 28:01. Along with Jake Muzzin (8 goals, 40 points), LA's blue-line corps isn't much to write about. Thankfully, things are still sharp in net with Jonathan Quick (40-23-5, 2.22 GAA; .918 w/5 SO in 68 GP) carrying the bulk of the starts. At age 30, the Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Minnesota Twins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Morgan) at Minnesota (Gibson) -165 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

To say that the Twins have been trending Over of late is something of an understatement.  Minnesota is 14-1-1 to the Over in their last 16 ballgames.  My clients and I have been cashing betting the Twins Over repeatedly during that span, and tonight’s game has all the makings of another high scoring slugfest.  Here’s why: In most sports, what happens in one game doesn’t matter all that much when it comes to the next game, with the just concluded NBA or NHL Playoffs standing out as prime recent examples.  But when it comes to MLB totals, there is clearly a correlative effect from one game to the next.

Hot lineups stay hot until proven otherwise.  A series of poor outings from a starting pitching staff will result in tired, overworked bullpens that throw gas on fires, as opposed to putting them out.  And when you put those two factors together – a hot lineup and some bad pitching – you’ve got the Minnesota Twins right now!

When an MLB team wins 14 out of 16 games, they’ll be one of the Read more

MLB newest league to consider Las Vegas for expansion

06.22.2016     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What is with everyone wanting to set up shop with a professional sports team in Las Vegas? The NHL is giving it a go, the Oakland Raiders are efforting, and now MLB is saying it "would not disqualify" Sin City -- whatever that means.

“I think the whole, ‘You can’t go to Vegas because there are casinos there,’ we passed that by a long time ago. There’s casinos all over the place. I see Las Vegas as a viable alternative. I would not disqualify it just because of the gambling issue.”

NHL yet to mention anything about betting on Las Vegas' expansion team

06.16.2016     10:17 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Now that the NHL has approved an expansion team in Las Vegas, everyone is waiting to hear what the league will say about local sportsbooks taking wagers on their games. So far, it hasn't come up, though the NHL has plenty of time (over a year) to raise a stink about it.

“I haven’t had any conversations with the NHL, and it would certainly be out of the ordinary if that were to occur,” Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board A.G. Burnett said Tuesday. “It seems to me that a lot of the sports leagues are seeing that professional sports can thrive without any issues in a well-regulated betting environment.”

“I certainly would be disappointed if they submitted that request,” Kornegay said. “I believe we would be sending the wrong message by doing so. I think it would be best for the games to be on the board. How awkward

Las Vegas earns NHL franchise

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You did it, Sin City. You managed to snag a professional hockey team. Up next is somehow making it work, which according to some, won’t be easy.

"This could be a watershed moment for our community and sports in Southern Nevada," said Jonas Peterson, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance. "Having a professional hockey team will not only boost our economy, but also our sense of community pride."

But it’s asking a lot for Las Vegas to support a major league team when it’s struggled to support pretty much every minor league team that’s tried to play there. If the city has some positives, it also has some negatives, like irregular working hours, middling public transit and abundant competition for the entertainment dollar, which may depress sports attendance.
