NHL Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

Montreal at Toronto -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs last season after suffering through many injuries in net and up front.  There were some big changes to the lineup over the summer and an emphasis has been placed on puck possession going forward.  Teams in the NHL have been preaching puck possession since 2005, but the Leafs are trying to take their hockey analytics to another level.  Whether or not that level with translate into more wins remains to be seen.  The preseason has been good to the Leafs as they finished atop the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.  Preseason hockey holds a lot more weight than other preseason sports and I actually see wins and losses in the preseason translate into how well a team will start off the season.  Montreal will be in the hunt for the playoffs this year.  Despite some of their offseason shakeups, they still remain one of the top 8 teams in the Eastern Conference.  Toronto will be playing in front of the home crowd tonight and they've beaten the Canadiens in four straight season opening games.  Look for that Read more

NHL Handicapping: San Jose Sharks headed in wrong direction

Sell the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have been a powerhouse in the Western Conference (at least during the regular season) for the better part of the last decade but much like we’ve seen with the New England Patriots, we’re starting to witness chinks in the armor. San Jose has a lot of “bet against” qualities heading into the campaign: aging core, questionable depth, average goaltending, and questionable team chemistry. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were stripped of their respective captaincy titles in the offseason and even though they can still play at a fairly strong level, this decision, even though they won’t admit it, has to sting them a bit. Those two veterans along with Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Tomas Hertl provide plenty of punch in their top six forwards but there is a significant dropoff in my mind from their top six to bottom six forwards.

Depth is not only an issue for the Sharks up front but on defense as well. They have only Scott Hannan, Matt Irwin, and Swiss rookie Mirco Mueller on defence, and only slightly more options up front. Tommy Wingels took a big step forward, speedy Matt Read more

NHL Handicapping: Vancouver Canucks look to put disastrous season behind them

Buy the Vancouver Canucks
On the surface, this looks like the start of a rebuild job in Vancouver. They basically cleaned house after a season filled with on- and off-the-ice controversy. It started with the departure of head coach in John Tortorella, something this particular team didn’t respond well to. They also said goodbye to mistake prone general manager Mike Gillis who was the architect behind the trades of goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. Those disastrous deals left the Canucks with nothing of quality in between the pipes which was a large part of their struggles.

New GM Jim Benning is smart and experienced and should be a major upgrade in the front office. Daniel and Henrik Sedin will once again carry this team offensively but they were not used properly by Tortorella. The team might miss Ryan Kesler to some degree but there was some chatter that he didn’t always get along with his teammates due to his fiery (almost too fiery) personality. Radim Vrbata’s addition to the team should help as he is expected to play on the top line with the Sedins. I like the addition of Nick Bonino from the Anaheim Ducks who was Read more

NHL Handicapping: Tampa Bay Lightning on the upswing

It’s October and a new NHL season is upon us! With no work stoppages or Olympic breaks teams should be very focused throughout the course of the season. For today and tomorrow we'll focus our attention on a few teams in the Eastern Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. And in case you missed it here are links to free season o/u points recommendations on the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers from last week. Enjoy!

Buy the Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay should see an improvement over last season on the simple fact that Steven Stamkos enters the season healthy and ready to go.  The late season addition and subsequent re-signing of Ryan Callahan has also bolstered the forward core.  The Lightning should have little trouble scoring this season just like prior seasons.  I have always been hesitant to fully back them however because of their lackadaisical approach defensively.  With the Read more

Buy the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are my biggest value play in the Eastern Conference heading into the season.  There is absolutely no chance they will be worse than last season’s 52-point total and -91 goal differential (both last in the NHL).  It’s easy to say the Sabres will be better based on a new year alone, but they worked hard to overhaul their lineup over the summer.  The books aren’t seeing much room for improvement as they have Buffalo lined at 64.5 points which is lowest in Read more

NHL Handicapping: Arizona Coyotes up against it in Western Conference

The NHL will drop the puck on the 2014-15 season later this week which gives me time to break down a few teams in the Western Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. The conference was a beast last season and I expect it to remain highly competitive with several legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Sell the Arizona Coyotes
A new name but likely the same result as the Arizona Coyotes start the season as a mediocre team that is light on star power. They will be hard pressed to stay on the playoff bubble let alone make the postseason in rugged Western Conference. Last year, the Coyotes relied on balance throughout their forward lines to provide scoring. They’ll attempt to do the same thing but it’s a tough philosophy to embrace considering the competition they’ll face on a nightly basis. Sam Gagner has been tasked with replacing Radim Vrbata and Mike Ribeiro on the top scoring line. I’m not sure that is an upgrade considering the Edmonton Oilers didn’t exactly rush to keep Gagner who had his ups and downs. Arizona is also paper thin on the blue line behind their top three of Keith Read more

The conference was a beast last season and I expect it to remain highly competitive with several legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Buy the Dallas Stars
Head coach Lindy Ruff did a tremendous job in his first season behind the bench in Big D as the Stars played their best hockey down the stretch and in the playoffs where they gave top seed Anaheim all kinds of fits before falling 4-2. Expect them to continue to build on that success this season. The scoring was led by the incomparable duo of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, who each scored at least 34 goals and 79 points last season. Dallas’ biggest shortcoming was it lacked supplemental scoring but GM Jim Nill has done a lot to change that by trading for Jason Spezza and signing Ales Hemsky. Spezza is an injury waiting to happen but if he can stay healthy (a big if), he will add much needed secondary scoring to lend support to Seguin, Benn and Valeri Nichushkin who impressed in his rookie Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Washington Capitals Season O/U Points

Washington Capitals
Season Over/Under Points 88.5
Recommendation: Over

Last week my blog centered around the Florida Panthers and my recommendation to go Under their season point/win total.  This week with baseball winding down and few games on the card I decided to once again focus on a specific NHL team and see if we can beat the market.

The Washington Capitals come into the 2014-15 with new coach Barry Trotz at the helm.  The departure of Adam Oates behind the bench and the addition of longtime Nashville Predators coach Trotz has me immediately looking to back a talented yet underachieving Capitals team.  The past seven seasons have seen the Caps finish with greater than 88.5 points (90, 97.4 extrapolated in a shorten season, 92, 107, 121, 108, and 94 points).  Washington has been on a downward turn the past three seasons, but a change in system and style will catapult them back into the top of the Read more

Florida Panthers
Season Over/Under Points 72.5
Recommendation: Under

With the NHL upon us, I decided to supplant my weekly MLB free play with an NHL season over/under points recommendation.  Some sportsbooks have early season point totals up and available.  I see immediate value with taking the Florida Panthers under.  This is a franchise that is complete disarray.  The change of ownership has done nothing to put the city of Sunrise, Florida at ease that one, they will win, and two, that they will remain in Florida.  The owners are speaking out of both sides of their mouth.  Despite the recent letter to fans that the team will remain in Florida, co-owner Doug Cifu said recently in August, "The arena and the team have lost a significant amount of money year over year for the last 10-plus years and the current business model is not sustainable."  The doesn’t sound very positive to me coupled with the face that this team is young, inexperienced, and prone to mistakes.  The trade for Roberto Luongo and the signing of Willie Mitchell is just a band aid to cover up an otherwise dreadful Read more
