NHL Handicapper Free Play: Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins

Florida at Boston -200 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

When you think of the Boston Bruins you think of hard-nosed physical hockey with a lot of depth. Despite the recent injuries they've had, they still are playing with that tenacity that has made them successful.  They've had success so far this season against the weaker opponents in the NHL and we should see more of the same tonight against a Florida Panthers team that struggles to score goals.  Florida has played three straight 2-1 games, while managing to win two of the three.  The Panthers have also allowed an NHL-low 17 regulation goals-against which has resulted in 7 of their 9 games going under the total.  Though not as strong, the Bruins also trend under the total of 4-7 O/U. Both teams dealing with offensive injuries which should assist in this game going under the current posted total of 5.

NHL player linked to illegal sports betting ring

10.31.2014     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
Current Minnesota Wild winger Thomas Vanek has been linked to an illegal sports betting operation.

That payment — apparently a salary check that was endorsed and handed over to cover wagers — was made at the same time hockey superstar Thomas Vanek played for the Islanders, said local attorney James Wolford.

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Buffalo Sabres at Toronto Maple Leafs

Buffalo at Toronto O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Buffalo +1.5 -155

It's never a great idea to lay big juice in the NHL, and that is what teams will be doing all season against the Buffalo Sabres.  The sportsbooks have made it known that they're not afraid to make teams -300 or greater favorites against the Sabres as evidenced by Buffalo's latest West Coast trip.  Buffalo's is coming off a solid 2-1 victory in San Jose on Saturday afternoon. The Sabres come back East to face the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in what should be a tight checking affair.  Buffalo coach Ted Nolan is happy with his team's progression despite their record, ''The last three games in particular, our work ethic is improving, as a result our play is getting better. One thing we learned, hopefully, is if you work, good things happen. That's the way we're going to have to win this season.''  Toronto is struggling almost as much as Buffalo to score goals.  They are just 1-4 on home ice this season and have mustered only 2 goals in their last two home games.  Anytime you can get a goal and a half for this cheap of a price against a team struggling to score Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Carolina Hurricanes at Winnipeg Jets

Carolina at Winnipeg -150 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

If there ever was a spot to step in and back the Winnipeg Jets, tonight is the night to do it.  I don't typically like backing teams that has been struggling offensively (8 goals in 5 games), but the Jets have been getting opportunities to score and I view some of their early season struggles as correctable. Tonight's opponent, Carolina, provides a good opportunity to turn things around. The winless Hurricanes could get a few players back off injured reserve tonight, but this is a team that has so many problems, problems that perhaps even a talented Jeff Skinner can't fix. Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice called out his players for a poor effort against the Flames at home Sunday night, and this is a perfect situation for a team to respond positively on its home ice. "We don’t need an individual to rise above the rest. We need the whole damn group to do their jobs. And regardless of who they are, it’s a very specific job they need to do. And we can’t do the second job until the first guy does his. So looking for a saviour will do us no good." All signs point to Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: San Jose Sharks at Washington Capitals

San Jose at Washington -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Totals of 5.5 involving the Washington Capitals these days are simply too high and are close to an “auto play” for me as a bettor. My clients and I cashed an under ticket in Washington's season opener against Montreal that yielded a 2-1 final. The Caps then shut out Boston 4-0 (total of 5) in their second game. This was a porous defensive team for years which is a big reason why Barry Trotz was selected as their new head coach. His teams are notorious for playing strong defensive hockey and keeping the puck out of the net. The total on tonight's game has been bumped back up to 5.5 largely because of the offensive potency of San Jose but Trotz's squad has clearly bought into playing defense at a high level which was a hallmark of his teams in Nashville. San Jose has scored 7 goals in their first two games against Winnipeg and Los Angeles but both games stayed under the total because the Sharks pitched shutouts. San Jose doesn't get enough credit for its defensive prowess and they’ll likely look to bring that same defensive mindset to this game as they go on the road for the Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

Montreal at Toronto -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs last season after suffering through many injuries in net and up front.  There were some big changes to the lineup over the summer and an emphasis has been placed on puck possession going forward.  Teams in the NHL have been preaching puck possession since 2005, but the Leafs are trying to take their hockey analytics to another level.  Whether or not that level with translate into more wins remains to be seen.  The preseason has been good to the Leafs as they finished atop the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.  Preseason hockey holds a lot more weight than other preseason sports and I actually see wins and losses in the preseason translate into how well a team will start off the season.  Montreal will be in the hunt for the playoffs this year.  Despite some of their offseason shakeups, they still remain one of the top 8 teams in the Eastern Conference.  Toronto will be playing in front of the home crowd tonight and they've beaten the Canadiens in four straight season opening games.  Look for that Read more

NHL Handicapping: San Jose Sharks headed in wrong direction

Sell the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have been a powerhouse in the Western Conference (at least during the regular season) for the better part of the last decade but much like we’ve seen with the New England Patriots, we’re starting to witness chinks in the armor. San Jose has a lot of “bet against” qualities heading into the campaign: aging core, questionable depth, average goaltending, and questionable team chemistry. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were stripped of their respective captaincy titles in the offseason and even though they can still play at a fairly strong level, this decision, even though they won’t admit it, has to sting them a bit. Those two veterans along with Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Tomas Hertl provide plenty of punch in their top six forwards but there is a significant dropoff in my mind from their top six to bottom six forwards.

Depth is not only an issue for the Sharks up front but on defense as well. They have only Scott Hannan, Matt Irwin, and Swiss rookie Mirco Mueller on defence, and only slightly more options up front. Tommy Wingels took a big step forward, speedy Matt Read more
