NBA Handicapper Free Play: Boston Celtics at Sacramento Kings

02.20.2015     08:19 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston at Sacramento -3.5 O/U 204.5
Recommendation: Over

This will be the first game for Sacramento under new head coach George Karl who brings in his up-tempo brand of basketball as he tries to rebuild the fledgling Kings. After Mike Malone was fired, Sacramento went 7-2 O/U run in its first nine games under Ty Corbin. But as the market adjusted that trend wore off a seven of the Kings’ last eight games leading into the All-Star break went under. With Karl now at the helm, and veteran Andre Miller joining him for a third time, I think there’s a good chance this team could go on another stretch of “over” basketball. Boston isn’t likely to shy away from an up-tempo game as they’ve seen each of its last four games against team with a losing record (Philadelphia, Denver, New York, and Minnesota) fly over the total. Boston improved themselves at point guard by acquiring Isaiah Thomas from the Phoenix Suns. He should fit in nicely to a solid three-guard lineup with Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart. Boston will be without a major front court presence for an indefinite period of time with Jared Sullinger out with a foot Read more

NBA Handicapping: Dragic to Miami highlights trade deadline

02.20.2015     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rather that sift through a Twitter timeline, fifty different articles, or Simmons' Members Only Grantland conversation that was neither informative or funny, Deadspin made it easy and broke down all of yesterday's NBA trades. Yeah, it's snarky, but in three minutes, you'll be up to speed. The biggest trade was Phoenix's Goran Dragic getting shipped to Miami. That instantly made the Heat a contender in the Eastern Conference. But not 24 hours after it went down, the team announced Chris Both may have a blood clot in his lung and could miss the rest of the season. We'll be talking more about the trading deadline as well as all of Friday night's game on the Sportsmemo Podcast this afternoon.

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona State student section provides extra homecourt edge

02.18.2015     01:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is interesting. Arizona State's student section uses this crazy curtain-like operation during opponent free throw attempts that statistics say gives ASU nearly a point-and-a-half worth of extra homecourt value. They're no doubt reaching with this one but worth checking out tonight as UCLA comes to town (6 pm PT, ESPN2).

Austin Tymins of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective estimated that the visiting teams’ lowered accuracy—60.6 percent in the second half this season, versus 68.6 percent in the first—should result in a 1.41 points per game home advantage for ASU.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Arizona State Sun Devils at Washington Huskies

Arizona State -2 at Washington O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Since the departure of Robert Upshaw we've seen Washington take on a completely different identity. The Huskies have been forced to play as many as four guards and an undersized forward and their defense has suffered as a result. Eliminated their game against offensively inept Oregon State and without Upshaw, Washington has allowed 1.20 points per possession in every game. In those four games, teams averaged 84.5 ppg. You also have to question where this team is at mentally after suffering back-to-back blowout losses. Arizona State has been up and down for much of the season but has shown much more ability to score after failing to crack 60 in its first four PAC-12 contests. Over their last seven games, the Sun Devils have averaged 74.1 ppg with a number of those games played at a fast tempo. Both teams aren't even close to being in the postseason discussion and with this being their second game in three days, I don't project much in the way of defensive intensity. Play it over.

Super Bowl XLIX Gambling: New England and Over not a good outcome for Vegas sportsbooks

02.02.2015     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Early indications suggest that New England's win over Seattle was not an ideal result for Las Vegas' sportsbooks.

“I don’t know what everyone else thought but I was sitting with 11 guys and 11 guys didn’t say a word,” Bogdanovich described the scene in William Hill’s war room. “We just sat there with our jaws dropped. It’s just dumb that they wouldn’t run Marshawn Lynch.”

“That was our one losing scenario,” said Nick Bogdanovich, William Hill sports books’ director of trading. “We had a big start with the futures, so it’s going to be close but the game couldn’t have been worse.”

NBA Handicapping: Chicago Bulls' defensive struggles return

01.30.2015     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not a week removed from experiencing a short termed defensive renaissance, the Chicago Bulls' struggles have returned. Last night, they allowed 47% shooting and 18 offensive rebounds in a 123-118 OT loss to the Lakers. Tough spot tonight as Chicago travels to Phoenix in a back-to-back spot. The Suns have won 15 of 21 and rank 7th in the NBA in offensive efficiency.

"We're not guarding anybody right now," Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler said. "That's what you think when you think Chicago -- is how great we are on defense. We haven't been that team, maybe three, four, five, six times this year tops. We can score the ball, so sometimes we outscore teams, but we haven't been playing any defense lately."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors ready for Super Bowl XLIX

01.26.2015     10:49 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Super Bowl time again.  I use this line every year because it’s true – this IS the moral equivalent of Christmas Day for many sports bettors.  Yet, much like last year, many of the professional full time bettors that I know are rather disappointed with the proposition betting opportunities for Super Bowl XLIX – there’s simply not much low hanging fruit.  The biggest and best sportsbooks (market leaders both here in Vegas and offshore) have learned from previous mistakes.  Weak numbers do NOT abound in 2015.

Let me start with the game itself.  The Super Bowl itself has been an underdog bettor’s paradise in recent years.   The Seahawks were underdogs at kickoff last year in their blowout win over the Broncos. The Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2013, as the underdog, beating the favored 49ers.  The Giants won the year before as an underdog; knocking off the Patriots.  In 2010, the Saints won straight up as a dog over Peyton Manning and the Colts.  In 2009, the Cardinals covered the spread in a tight loss to the Steelers.  In 2008, the Gia nts beat the favored 18-0 Patriots Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Cal tries to turn things around vs. Arizona State

01.22.2015     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Things haven't gone well for Cal under first-year head coach Cuonzo Martin. They've lost six of seven and topped 60 points only twice during that stretch. Heading into tonight's game vs. Arizona State, the sentiment is this is "gut check" time.

“It’s hard to know guys until you’re actually in the trenches,” Martin said. “When you hit adversity, that’s when you start to grow. That’s when you learn who you are as a team, as a program.

“He wants us to have more pride, especially on the defensive end,” senior forward Dwight Tarwater said. “Coming out with more of a sense of pride and toughness.”
