NFL Gambling Alert: Minnesota expected to start Bradford vs. Green Bay

09.16.2016     10:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite beating the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 with Shaun Hill under center, the Minnesota Vikings are expected to go with Sam Bradford for Sunday night's game against rival Green Bay. Bradford, of course, has only been with the team for two weeks and has had to absorb the playbook quickly. The Packers are currently -2.5 road chalk.

“Everyone’s aware of the nuances that we have in this offense,” tight end Kyle Rudolph said. “Not only knowing what a guy has on what play but trusting that that guy is going to win and be in the spot for you — that’s stuff that you develop over the course of years, and we’re trying to do it over a couple weeks.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Handicapping the NFL post-Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 1 of the NFL season routinely tells lies.  The goal of any winning handicapper has to be figuring out which teams were lying in their Week 1 performances.

Look no further than last year for some excellent examples.  On opening day of the 2015 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans blew out Tampa Bay 42-14.  Marcus Mariota looked like a superstar, throwing four TD passes in his NFL debut and finishing the game with a perfect passer rating.

If you bet the Titans the following week, you watched them lose outright by two touchdowns to the NFL’s worst team, Cleveland.   Mariota threw only five TD passes over the next four weeks before getting hurt.  Tennessee finished the season tied for the worst pointspread record in the NFL, cashing only three winning bets in their final 15 games.  The Titans lied to us in Week 1.

Remember when the Dolphins beat the Redskins, and covered as four point road favorites in Washington, thanks to a Jarvis Landry punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter.    Miami lost their next three games so badly that head coach Joe Philbin didn’t survive their bye Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Dolphins at Seattle Seahawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Seattle
Sunday, 1 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -7 O/U 44
CRIS Current: Seattle -10.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Miami

The Seahawks have been an elite team for the last five years of the Pete Carroll era.  But Carroll’s teams tend to pick up momentum as the season goes along, not right from the get-go on opening day.  The Seahawks have lost in straight up fashion on opening day three times in the last five years; twice as favorites.  Only once – their Thursday Night opener against Green Bay following their Super Bowl title – have they won on opening day by more than a touchdown.  The Seahawks are not a team to lay double digits with coming out of the gate in 2016.

The betting markets continue to look at Seattle as a team without weaknesses.  But one weakness has been very apparent if you’ve been paying attention to the Seahawks throughout the preseason – their offensive line.  Offensive line coach Tom Cable has been trying to cobble together a unit that won’t have a single starter playing the same position as Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys

NY Giants at Dallas
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Dallas -4 O/U 49
CRIS Current: New York +1 O/U 46.5
Recommendation: Dallas

Sunday afternoon features a pair of NFC East foes as the Dallas Cowboys host the New York Giants. The Cowboys will start the year with rookie quarterback Dak Prescott as veteran Tony Romo will be out for 10 weeks with a fracture in his back. The 4th round pick from Mississippi State put up stellar numbers during the preseason, completing 78% of his passes and scoring 7 total touchdowns with no interceptions thrown.

The Giants dealt with some struggles offensively during the preseason, scoring just 48 total points (12 ppg). However, the three key pieces of the offense weren't around  much as quarterback Eli Manning and receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz were rarely on the field together. On the flip side, the defense did look sharp throughout the preseason. Veteran Jason Pierre-Paul returns for what will be his first opening day start since 2014. Rookies Eli Apple and Darian Thompson along with newly acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are expected Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Appalachian State Mountaineers at Tennessee Volunteers

Appalachian State at Tennessee
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -22.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Tennessee -21 O/U 59
Recommendation: Tennessee

This will mark the third year in a row the Tennessee Volunteers play a strong mid-major to open the season and thus far, Butch Jones has made sure the Vols passed each test. In 2014, UT beat a 10-win Utah State team 38-7 and last season, cruised past high-powered Bowling Green, 59-30. Last year’s Sun Belt runners-up return 15 starters are a co-betting favorites with Arkansas State to win the conference title. Many think this will be a breakout year for Tennessee as the Vols are currently priced at -125 chalk to win the SEC East and the third betting choice (+420) to win the SEC championship.

Jones’ offense features two incredible playmakers in senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs and junior running back Jalen Hurd. Add to it a strong offensive line as well as talented depth at the skill positions and we have reason to believe the Vols will be able to move the ball with ease. And while Appalachian State will have edges on Read more

NFL Preseason Gambling: Minnesota continues to cash tickets under Zimmer

08.25.2016     10:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer downplayed the importance of Sunday's preseason game vs. San Diego saying Week 1 of the regular season remains the team's top priority. That said, no one can deny Minny's ability to cash tickets in these "meaningless" games. Since becoming head coach, the Vikings are 10-1 SU, 9-2 ATS, and 3-7-1 O/U under Zimmer in the preseason. The Vikings are currently -4.5 home favorites over the Chargers.

"I still want to know what our guys know without having to try to scheme somebody else," Zimmer said. "We're just going to go play and do what we do. I know everybody says, 'Dress rehearsal,' but I don't know if it's like that any more. At least, it hasn't been like that for me for a long time."

"Obviously, we want to look good," Zimmer said. "If we're not ready, then I'm not going to (automatically rest players). It just depends. I know everybody judges off just the games, but we have to judge off practice every day, watching tape,

NFL Handicapping: League decides to ditch probable tag on injury report

08.22.2016     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well figuring out who is and isn't playing on Sundays just got a little more difficult. The NFL announced that it will no longer use "probable" for a player's status but instead use "questionable," "doubtful," or "out." It sounds as if those players once listed as "probable" -- a vast majority of which always played -- will now be "questionable."

Two days before kickoff, teams must list injured players as "questionable," "doubtful" or "out" for that game.

"Questionable" players, per the policy, are "uncertain" to play. Previously, the definition was that there was a 50 percent likelihood of playing.

"Doubtful" means the player is "unlikely" to participate in the game, and "out" means he "will not play." The previous definition for "doubtful" was a 75 percent likelihood that he would not play.
