Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC News and Notes

11.10.2014     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns went into Thursday Night’s matchup at Cincinnati with a winning record, but without much respect from the betting markets.  Cleveland had spent the last month feasting on the weak, facing off against the likes of the Titans, Jaguars, Raiders and Bucs in their previous five games; arguably the four worst teams in the NFL.  The Browns didn’t blow out any of those squads; locked in tight, competitive games each time except their only loss during that span – a blowout defeat at Jacksonville.

Without pro bowl center Alex Mack in the lineup over their previous three games, the Browns offense became completely one-dimensional; a team that couldn’t run the football one iota.  Against Tampa’s shoddy rush D, it was 26 carries for 50 yards.  The week before, it was 25 rushes for 39 yards.  The week before that, it was 30 rushes for 69 yards.  That’s less than two yards per carry against weaklings.

So what did the Browns do in their step-up game on Thursday Night at Cincinnati?  Simple – they dominated on both sides of the football, start to finish, rushing for 170 yards and Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Pinnacle opens Dallas -7.5 vs. Jacksonville

UPDATE

Back-to-back practices for Tony Romo was enough for a few offshore sportsbooks to hang a number on Sunday's game vs. Jacksonville. Pinnacle opened Dallas -7.5ev but has since been bet down to -7-05. The total of 45.5 hasn't budged. In Las Vegas, the Westgate posted -7 and 45.5 earlier this morning.

NFL Gambling Preview: Miami Dolphins at Detroit Lions

Miami at Detroit
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Detroit -3 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: Detroit -2.5 O/U 2.5 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Detroit -2.5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Under

Both the Lions and the Dolphins rank outside the top half of the NFL in red zone touchdown percentage on offense; both teams settling for field goals far too regularly.  Defensively, both the Lions and Dolphins are above average at keeping teams out of the end zone when they reach the red zone.

Any NFL totals bettor will tell you that one of the key aspects of the handicap is trying to gauge the ratio of field goals vs. touchdowns.  Given how both teams have played on both sides of the ball throughout the first half of the campaign, it’s quite reasonable to assume that the trend of ‘more field goals and fewer touchdowns’ will continue this week.

On a yards-per-play basis, Miami Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Georgia State Panthers at Troy Trojans

Georgia State at Troy
Saturday, Noon PT
CRIS Opener:
Troy -7 O/U 63.5
CRIS Current: Troy -7 O/U 65
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Troy -7
Drew Martin's Recommendation: Over

The Troy Trojans will play host to the Georgia State Panthers in a battle between Sun Belt Conference bottom dwellers. The Panthers will be seeking their first ever win in conference competition while the Trojans look for their second win of the season. Both teams have had a tough year despite decent offensive production.

The Panthers are coming off of their worst offensive performance of the year with 62 total yards and 22 minutes of possession. But a huge asterisk can be placed next to that effort as the weather at Appalachian State was brutal (wind and snow) leaving little to no chance for a dome team to have success.  Georgia State’s offense is based on finesse and will run at a much faster tempo under Read more

NFL Gambling: Jones say Romo will play vs. Jacksonville

11.06.2014     06:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Dallas owner Jerry Jones, Tony Romo will play in Sunday's game against Jacksonville in London. Sportsbooks however are taking a more cautious approach with the game still off the board. Back-up Brandon Weeden posted a QB Rating of 55.5 in last week's loss to Arizona.

“I’m anticipating him playing,’’ Jones said. “I have no reason to think that he won’t.

“Anytime he can play, we want him to play. We’re a better team, to be trite, with him playing. There’s no such thing as holding him out and foregoing the potential chance that we win.’’

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Arizona State Sun Devils

Notre Dame at Arizona State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -2 O/U 59.5
CRIS Current: Arizona State -2.5 O/U 60
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona State -2
OTTO Sports’ Recommendation: Over

Good non-conference matchup with Arizona State playing host to Notre Dame on Saturday. Last year's meeting saw the Irish pull out of 37-34 win in Dallas. There were 85 pass attempts and 45 first downs in that contest and I expect another up-and-down affair this weekend.

Arizona State's defense has had an easy time of it the last three game with Stanford, Washington (without Cyler Miles), and Utah. Go back to games against more capable offenses and we see that the Sun Devils allowed big yards to Colorado, UCLA, and USC. Those three games featured an average of over 74 points per game.

Notre Dame meanwhile has had a favorable schedule when it comes to opposing Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFC News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re into November, just past the halfway point of the 2014 NFL season.  The truths that we learned in September aren’t proving to be quite so true now that the season has progressed.  In this week’s wiseguy report, we’ll take a quick tour around the NFC landscape, focusing on some hidden gems of knowledge from around the league.

With their dominating win on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals are now 14-3 SU, 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 ballgames.  Only one of those three losses came by more than a field goal – their game at Denver, when third string rookie QB Logan Thomas was forced into action after injuries to Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.

Yet the Cardinals statistical profile continues to confound wiseguy bettors.  Arizona went into their game at Dallas on Sunday with a -0.6 yards per play differential.  To put that number in perspective, the Oakland Raiders entered the weekend with a - 0.5 yards per play differential, the Jacksonville Jaguars had a -0.7 ypp differential.    And the Cards have been on the lucky end of the turnover equation this year, now +10 for the season after winning the Read more

NFL Handicapping: Philadelphia's Mark Sanchez takes over for Nick Foles

11.03.2014     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A slew of injuries for the Philadelphia Eagles during Sunday's win at Houston. DeMeco Ryans (Achilles) and Nick Foles (shoulder) are feared out for the season. Mark Sanchez filled in for Foles and completed 15-of-22 passes for 202 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs. Looking ahead, Philly faces three teams currently in the top ten in passing defense. The Eagles play host to Carolina on Monday Night Football.

Opponent - YPG Passing Defense Rank
vs. Carolina - 17th
at Green Bay - 9th
vs. Tennessee - 16th
at Dallas - 15th
vs. Seattle - 6th
vs. Dallas - 15th
at Washington - 7th
at NY Giants - 25th
