NBA Handicapping: Warriors-Rockets total highest since 2010

01.20.2017     09:15 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Some rarified air tonight with the Golden State-Houston total currently sitting at 238. It's the highest NBA total since 2010 when the Warriors and Suns closed 244 and landed 264. Totals of 235 or higher are 8-8-1 O/U since 1995. Interesting that totals in regulation are nearly dead even this season at 300-299 O/U.

Raiders take another step towards Las Vegas

01.20.2017     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
So this Raiders to Las Vegas thing sounds like it's really going to happen.

"Today, the Oakland Raiders submitted an application to relocate their franchise to Las Vegas, as is provided for under the NFL policy and procedures for proposed franchise relocations," the NFL said. "The application will be reviewed in the coming weeks by league staff and the stadium and finance committees."

Sportsbooks love to talk about getting thrashed by the betting public

01.17.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Sportsbooks are a business and a lot of their profit is generated from casual bettors; the "betting public." So when the postseason hits you tend to read a lot of articles about the "betting public" getting the best of the sportsbooks. Last week, outright wins by the Steelers and Packers reportedly proved costly. The week prior it was Clemson's win over Alabama that "crushed the books." What you generally don't read is articles about games in which 80% of the tickets are on one side but 80% of the money is on the other; the old square/sharp divide. That wouldn't be good marketing.

NFL Gambling: Bettors gear up for Conference Championship weekend

The scoreboard operator at the Georgia Dome in expected to be busy at Sunday’s NFC title clash between the Packers and Falcons. Both offenses should be primed to light up the scoreboard as evidenced by the fact this game is currently lined at 60/60.5 at every major offshore and Las Vegas sportsbook. Aaron Rodgers continued his elite level play in Sunday’s thrilling 34-31 win over Dallas. He completed 28-of-43 passes for 356 yards and now has a spectacular 21-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio during the Packers’ current 8-0 SU, 7-1 ATS surge. The absence of Jordy Nelson was negated by “step up” efforts from Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison (each with three or more catches). Tight end Jared Cook also hauled in six passes including the all-important one that set up the game winning field goal. But Green Bay’s defense was exposed, especially in the secondary, where injuries remain plentiful. Dallas rolled up 429 total yards including 302 through the air. That doesn’t bode well for their matchup against Matt Ryan and an Atlanta offense that posted some of the league’s best offensive numbers. Note that the Falcons ranked tops in the Read more

NFL Handicapping: A look at this weekend's four Divisional Round matchups

Atlanta’s offense was both visually and statistically (33.8 ppg and 415.8 ypg) dominant for much of the season. They play host to a Seattle defense that obviously has a strong pedigree, particularly in the secondary. But that dominant secondary has been exposed at times this year and was recently dealt a key injury with Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas out. Detroit couldn’t take advantage of Thomas’ absence as it was clear Matthew Stafford was not 100 percent due to a dislocated finger. And the Lions’ offensive line was banged up and missing two starters. In the end, the Seahawks surrendered only 231 total yards. It will be a much more difficult task this weekend as Atlanta’s offense is in a far better position to successfully move the football. Matt Ryan (38 TDs, 7 INTs, 69.9% completion rate) has a host of skill position weapons and like we saw against Arizona and Green Bay, Seattle can be exposed through the air. There are questions about Atlanta’s defense which ranked in the bottom third of the league in a number of categories. After struggling to run the football for virtually the entire regular season, Thomas Rawls went for 161 yards against Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Syracuse's defense has been awful

01.04.2017     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's always fun to watch Jim Boeheim piss and moan when his team struggles and struggle they have as they enter tonight's game against Miami just 8-6. The problem? Defense. St. John's and Boston College somehow combined for 189 points. The Orange held BC to 40 last year! Another issue could be pace. Their last three losses all featured 71 possessions or more. Syracuse is 65th nationally in average length of offensive possession and 342nd defensively meaning they are spending a lot of time on the defensive end. And Boeheim went so far as to say it's a "long shot" things will get a lot better. Home dog to Miami tonight with the total played down from 139 to 135.5.

“Against anybody that can shoot at all our defense has been non-existent, whether it’s Wisconsin or Boston College or St. John’s,” he said on Sunday, rattling off games the Orange lost while allowing their opponent to shoot a combined 50 percent on 3-pointers (39-for-78).

“We’ve played 14

NFL Gambling: Previewing all four Wild Card round matchups

Saturday’s Oakland-Houston matchup is likely to be decided by which team can produce adequate quarterback play. Derek Carr suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16 against Indianapolis and in Sunday’s loss to Denver, Matt McGloin left the game with a left shoulder injury and is highly doubtful. That means bettors are likely to see rookie Connor Cook under center for a Raiders team playing in their first playoff game since 2002. Things aren’t much clearer for Houston with Tom Savage experiencing concussion symptoms and currently questionable. Savage’s status essentially forced Bill O’Brien into going back to the well with Brock Osweiler. Oakland had a noticeable lack of spirit in the loss to Denver despite having a with a chance to win the AFC West and earn a first round bye. The Raiders were physically manhandled by a Broncos team that was already eliminated from the playoffs. The biggest handicapping factor for this game is whether or not Oakland has the belief it can win a playoff game after seeing its top two quarterbacks go down with injuries. It makes sense why the total in this game is the lowest of the four games this weekend with most Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

Dallas at Philadelphia
Sunday, 10 am PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Dallas -3.5 O/U 45
CRIS Current: Philadelphia -6.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

I will be rooting against my free play this week because I have a large wager on Philadelphia Under 7 wins; a wager that I expect will push after the Eagles knock off the Cowboys on Sunday.  And with an 8-1 mark on my season win totals over the past two years, pushing with Philly is going to be frustrating.  So let’s at least make some $$ betting on the Eagles this week.

Make no mistake about it – this is a preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys.  Dallas is going to have their starters on the field early.  But by halftime, expect most of those starters to be on the bench, avoiding injury.  Tony Romo is expected to get his first playing time of the year behind center.  But we can also expect a Mark Sanchez sighting.

And every Cowboy with a hangnail is going to be sitting out as well. Don’t expect to see the likes of Ronald Leary or Tyson Smith on the offensive line.  CB Morris Claiborne Read more
