NCAA Final Four Gambling: Kentucky a short favorite over UConn for title game

04.07.2014     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The college basketball season comes to an end tonight with 8th seed Kentucky taking on 7th seed UConn. The Wildcats opened -3 at CRIS and -3.5 at Pinnacle but have since been bet down to -2.5 at most offshore sportsbooks. Yesterday, the total got steamed from 133.5 to 135. UK has gone over the total in four straight games. According to LVH, the Huskies were 100-1 to win the title prior to the start of the tournament while the Cats were 50-1.

“They have a lot going for them,” Ed Salmons, assistant sports book director at the LVH Superbook who oversees college basketball, said earlier this week. “They’re so 3-point dependent, and if they hit their shots and make a lot of them, it can change the whole complexion of the game.”

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Final Four Primer

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2014 NCAA Tournament field consisting of 68 teams has been reduced to four. Florida, the No. 1 overall seed, remains standing along with Wisconsin, Kentucky and Connecticut.

After missing out on the Final Four in three consecutive Elite Eight losses, Billy Donovan's team is back in the national semifinals for the first time since 2007. UF went on a 15-1 run late in the first half to take control en route to a 62-52 win over Dayton as a 10.5-point favorite in Saturday's South Region finals. Scottie Wilbekin was the catalyst yet again. The senior point guard scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that sent the Gators to intermission with a 38-24 lead. It was the fourth time Wilbekin had ended the first half with a last-second bucket in the last six games. At the under-eight television timeout, UF led the Flyers by 10 points. From our seats in the second row at FedEx Forum, I looked at my Dad and said, "We've been here before." In the 2011 South Region finals against Butler in New Orleans, Florida had a double-digit lead at the eight-minute mark. Likewise in St. Louis in 2012, the Gators were up 10 on Read more

Dallas at Washington -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Washington

The smell of playoff hockey is in the air as teams stare down the last 6-8 games in the regular season.  Despite what always appears to be a log jam in the standings come this time of year, we see that only a couple teams are legitimately fighting for the last playoff spots.  In the Eastern Conference there are eight teams fighting for four spots (Detroit, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa).  It really comes down to Columbus, Washington, Toronto, New Jersey, and Ottawa in my estimation.  The other teams have separated themselves enough to control their own destiny.

In the Western Conference we see much of the same as the top teams (St. Louis, Anaheim, Chicago, San Jose, and Colorado) have already clinched playoff berths.  The Los Angeles Kings are in that group as well with one more win needed to secure a playoff spot and Minnesota having a big enough lead for me to send them into the postseason.  That leaves just one spot open in the Western Conference with Phoenix and Dallas battling it out for all the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Late season NBA betting opportunities Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You’ll be reading more than enough about the Final Four in the week to come.  You’ll be able to find my initial take on the two games in my ESPN.com piece, midweek.  So I’m going to focus on the NBA in this week’s Wiseguy Report, picking up right where I left off last week, when I broke down a handful of Eastern Conference morphers

It’s worth noting that since I wrote that article, blindly supporting the three bet-on teams that I mentioned (Cleveland, Philadelphia and Brooklyn) while fading my one ‘bet-against squad (Indiana) has produced a 10-5 ATS result.  Hopefully this edition, focusing on Western Conference morphers, will produce similar short term dividends.

The San Antonio Spurs success can’t be a surprise to any breathing human.  No team in the league has been more consistent over the past decade and a half, and San Antonio came one brutal overtime loss short of winning the NBA Championship last Read more

Anti-online gambling lawmakers scoff a poker being a game of skill

Man, these anti-gambling crusaders are pricks.

“If you want to have online gambling, then come to the Congress. ... If you want to have a poker exception, offer an amendment and see if it will pass,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who introduced the bill today along with Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

“Sheldon has aligned himself with most Baptists in South Carolina,” Graham said, when asked about the association of his efforts with Adelson’s campaign. “I’m on solid footing with the people of South Carolina that I represent. The fact that Sheldon is on board is a good thing.”

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Short lined games abound for Sweet Sixteen

03.26.2014     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers are expecting the unexpected with Thursday and Friday's NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen games. Every game save for San Diego State-Arizona is currently lined at 4.5 or less. Four of last year's eight Sweet Sixteen games were lined at 5 or above.

“These teams are getting so close as far as their talent,” Vaccaro said. “The gap between teams isn’t that great anymore, and you can really see it in the point spreads. There is no game here that would shock anyone with the outcome.”

“The Cinderella slipper is guaranteed to be in the Elite Eight,” McCormick said. “Dayton was probably the best team of the first two rounds for us, with their upset over Ohio State and then following it by beating Syracuse. They were great for the house.”

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards return home after sub-par West Coast swing

03.26.2014     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix -1.5 at Washington O/U 210

The Washington Wizards are rested, ready, and determined to get bounce back after a recent 1-3 West Coast trip. They are currently 2.5 games ahead of Charlotte for the much-coveted sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.  Washington last played in Denver and Sunday and plays host to Phoenix tonight.

“That’s not the trip we wanted and that lets you know, you try to get too complacent and think you’ve already got a playoff spot, which you don’t,” said Wall, who has never played meaningful games this late in an NBA season. “We easily could’ve been 3-1 or 2-2, to give ourselves a better chance to keep our space from other teams, especially the way Charlotte’s playing and Brooklyn’s Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting: Kentucky in great form but Louisville remains moderate favorite

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kentucky vs. Louisville -5 O/U 138.5

Current form or entire body of work? That is the conundrum with Friday's Kentucky-Louisville game. The Wildcats have looked Final Four-esque (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS) since losing to Florida in the regular season finale. The Cardinals meanwhile received scares in their first two tourney games from Manhattan and Saint Louis – trailing in the second half of both only to pull away late. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, 14 of Louisville's last 15 wins came by double-digits. UK won the regular season meeting in Lexington, 73-66 as 1.5-point favorites. For Friday, Louisville has held steady as a 5-point favorite; something oddsmakers don't feel will change much prior to tip-off.

“The line is based on rating of both teams,” he said. “Kentucky played great Sunday. From what I’ve seen, it was one of their best-played games all year… So yes, the line probably came down a little bit from what I thought it would be originally. But you Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Mary's Gaels at Minnesota Golden Gophers

St. Mary's at Minnesota -6
Recommendation: Minnesota

Minnesota was in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid coming down the stretch of the regular season, but it just couldn't break through with a quality road win. In fact, the Gophers lost seven of their last eight games on the road. But that doesn't matter in regards to Sunday's showdown with Saint Mary's in the NIT's version of the Sweet 16. You see, Richard Pitino's team is at home for this game and it is a completely different squad at The Barn. When Minnesota wins at home, something it did in 16 of 19 games this season, it doesn't mess around. In fact, the Gophers have won 15 of their 16 home games by margins of six points or more. That's a convenient stat because most books had Pitino's troops installed as six-point home. We should also note that Minnesota won by double digits in 12 of its 15 home victories. And it's not as if Minnesota was going up against a bunch of scrub squads. The Gophers beat Ohio State by a 63-53 count and thumped Wisconsin, 81-68. Another team in the NCAA Tournament (Iowa) field got bested 95-89 in Minneapolis, while one school left in the NIT field (Florida Read more
