MLB Handicapping: Blue Jays' starting staff already in flux

04.20.2015     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Much of Toronto's preseason expectations were based on the handful of young, talented arms they have in their rotation. Unfortunately, said arms haven't looked all that sharp thus far. Drew Hutchison was smacked around his last two starts (9 IP, 11 ERs) thanks to a dip in velocity. Following Sunday's 2.2 IP, 4 ER effort, Daniel Norris is now complaining of "dead arm." Aaron Sanchez doesn't appear ready to be a full-time starter after limping through his first outings (9 IP, 6 ERs, 5 Ks, 5 BBs). And projected ace Marcus Stroman of course is gone for the year with a knee injury. That leaves elder statesmen RA Dickey and Mark Buehrle to carry the load. The Jays have scored the most runs in baseball (70) but there are already rumblings that changes to the starting staff are imminent.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spurs could be in trouble following Game 1 loss

04.20.2015     07:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The San Antonio Spurs opened their defense of their NBA Championship run from last year with a blowout loss on the road at the Staples Center in LA against the Clippers.  That Game 1 and the series against the Clips featured some EXTREMELY unusual betting action here in Las Vegas and offshore – money coming on one team (the Clippers) for Game 1 while coming on the other team (San Antonio) for the series.  I can’t recall any previous series in my 17 basketball seasons here in Las Vegas where the Game 1 favorite was not the favorite to win the series.  The betting action was a clear indicator of the respect bettors have for San Antonio heading into the 2015 postseason.

But following that Game 1 debacle, the Spurs aren’t favored to win the series anymore, with the adjusted series prices popping up following Game 1 showing LA as short chalk moving forward. The question bettors and pundits need to be asking is a simple one.  Was the Spurs Game 1 loss simply a bump in the road for this perennial championship contender or was it an "end of an era" indicator, telling us that the Spurs are "fade" material moving Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: National League Preview

04.13.2015     07:23 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote a team-by-team overview of the 15 American League squads.  This week, I’ll shift my focus to the National League, breaking down each team from a Las Vegas perspective.  Teams are listed in alphabetical order, by division.

A week ago, the Atlanta Braves were viewed as likely bottom feeders following a massive offseason rebuild that resulted in only six players from opening day last year returning on opening day in 2015; lined in the same range as teams like Arizona, Colorado and Minnesota.  One week later and the market view of Atlanta has changed at least somewhat thanks to a 5-1 record with the best run differential in the NL.  Julio Teheran, Shelby Miller and Alex Wood all hav top-of-the-rotation stuff, but it’s hard to picture this anemic lineup continuing to deliver steady run support.

The Miami Marlins hung around in the wild card race into the dog days of August last year before Giancarlo Stanton’s Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Golden State -12.5 O/U 209
Recommendation: Golden State

The Phoenix Suns fought the good fight for most of the season.  But quite frankly, you can stick a fork into Jeff Hornacek’s squad right now, because they are done.  The injuries are piling up, with center Alex Lin and point guard Brandon Knight both expected to miss tonight’s game.  The losses are piling up as well, with the Suns now trailing current #8 seed OKC by four games in the Western Conference playoff standings; 2.5 games behind New Orleans.

The Suns have shown very little fight in recent losses.  The trend started last week with a home loss to lowly Sacramento; a wire-2-wire defeat.  They followed that up with a home loss to Portland.  Last Sunday, in a true circle the wagons game, Phoenix led OKC by 20 at home but ended up losing the game by double digits, completely outclassed in the fourth quarter.  The following night in Portland was every bit as bad; a game that was over well before the fourth quarter began.

The Suns upcoming schedule is truly brutal.  After tonight’s game they play Utah at Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: New York Mets

03.31.2015     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

With Matt Harvey back, there are modest expectations for the New York Mets following last year's late season "success." But the loss of Zack Wheeler coupled with a mediocre lineup threatens to hamper any significant progress.

New York Mets
2014 W-L:
79-83
2014 O/U: 72-72-18
2014 Profits: +3.1
2015 O/U Wins: 81.5
2015 NL East Odds: +700
Projected Starting Rotation: Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese, Rafael Montero
Key Departures: None
Key Additions: Michael Cuddyer

Handicapper's Take: "Team centerpiece Matt Harvey gave the Mets a significant ray of sunshine during spring training when his fastball touched 99 on the radar gun. His health became that much more important after fellow young gun Zack Wheeler fell victim to Tommy John and will miss the entire season. New York could also use a healthy David Wright after Wright missed 28 games last season and played hurt in many more. It Read more

First weekend in May promises to be huge for Las Vegas

03.30.2015     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're into sports betting and thinking about making a trip to Las Vegas the spring, the first weekend in May looks to be ideal. For starters you have both NBA and NHL playoffs in full swing. Then there's the Kentucky Derby. And to close out the evening one of the biggest fights in history with Mayweather vs. Pacquiao at the MGM Grand.

“Other than Super Bowl Sunday, the single day will be as big as we’ve written in years.  Look for May 2 to be approaching the Super Bowl handle on Super Bowl Sunday, and that’s saying a lot.”

Gamblers may have to give back winnings from casino gaffe

03.23.2015     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's a blast from the past. Back in 2012 a bunch of gamblers took advantage of a card shuffling blunder at Atlantic City's Golden Nugget Casino. The group of 14 gamblers won $1.5 million but are NOW being asked to return their winnings.

"By ordering the patrons to return the monies that were paid out by (the Golden Nugget) nearly three years after the game ended sends incredible conditional messages to the public: A win isn't necessarily a win, and that casinos will go after winning players who are without fault" if the casino or one of its agents were to blame, the gamblers said in a court filing asking the judge to reverse her February ruling in favor of the casino.
