NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Sacramento Kings at Phoenix Suns

Sacramento +6 at Phoenix O/U 218.5
Recommendation: Sacramento

Pair of non-playoff teams with different perceptions on how they’re approaching these meaningless final games. Phoenix is a team people see as still giving effort while Sacramento is a disgruntled group that can’t wait for the season to end. To some extent, that’s why Phoenix is favored by any amount in this matchup and the -6 that we see right now has the absence of Kings top player DeMarcus Cousins tacked on to it. The Suns have a key injury of their own as Archie Goodwin who has played very well down the stretch is expected to miss tonight’s game. That leaves Phoenix with just one PG (Ronnie Price) and puts the Suns' backcourt at a distinct disadvantage in this game. Rajon Rondo should play tonight but even if he doesn’t, the combination of Darren Collison (27 pts yesterday), Seth Curry (averagining 17.0 pts L5G) plus shooting guards James Anderson and Ben McLemore gives Sacramento four guards who are playing hard and will own talent and depth advantages tonight. Phoenix isn’t significantly better than Sacramento at the C position even with Cousins on Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing the early season MLB betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Matt Harvey lost again on Sunday, with the Mets priced as high as -280 here in Las Vegas.  Chris Archer leads the majors in strikeouts, while King Felix ranks second as I write this early Monday morning. Their two teams -- Tampa and Seattle -- teams are a combined 0-4 in the four starts from those two aces.   I closed out last week writing about how betting on aces – the guys that advanced metrics really, truly love – has evolved into a negative expectation wager over the last few years.  The quants have emerged as the dominating force in the MLB betting marketplace and there’s no way that I’ve uncovered to beat them at their own game.

So, I’ve been focusing on the opening week of the MLB season with an anti-quant mentality, looking to take advantage of what the betting markets are undervaluing, not overvaluing.  If the markets are too tilted towards starting pitching, that leaves three areas that aren’t appropriately priced, in my opinion – lineups, bullpens and streaks.

There’s already early season action for streak bettors, with the Orioles winning while the Twins and Braves keep Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Nashville Predators

Colorado at Nashville O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Nashville -1.5 +140

Two Central Division foes will clash for the last time tonight as the Nashville Predators host the Colorado Avalanche. Nashville has already punched its ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite their current four-game losing streak, which continued over the weekend when the Preds blew a 2-0 lead and lost in a 3-2 shootout to San Jose on Saturday night. Colorado is fighting to stay alive to grab the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference as they trail Minnesota by five points with only three contests remaining. They have lost five of their last six games and head coach Patrick Roy lit into his club after their 5-1 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. He called out forward Matt Duchene for celebrating his 30th goal of the season when they were down 4-0. The celebration wasn't anything over the top but for Roy to make that a focal point shows that this team is clearly frustrated. As for the Preds, they need to build some positive momentum heading into what will be a tough postseason as they will be in the Pacific Division quadrant for at least the first two rounds. The Preds are 5-4 this Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres

Los Angeles (Kershaw) at San Diego (Ross) +180 O/U 6
Recommendation: San Diego

Clayton Kershaw is a true ace, arguably the best pitcher in the NL.  Last year, he became the first pitcher in MLB history to finish among the Top 3 in Cy Young voting in five consecutive seasons.  His team finished in first place.  And oh, by the way, if you bet on Kershaw in every game, you lost more than five units over the season.  And given the nature of the 2016 MLB betting marketplace, wagering on the best pitcher in the NL is likely to be a money losing proposition moving forward.

All of Kershaw’s dominant numbers are baked into this line, leaving the Dodgers priced as $2 road favorites this evening.  His counterpart on the Padres side, Tyson Ross, put up truly dominant numbers last year, the only pitcher in the majors besides Cubs ace Jake Arrieta to finish in the Top 10 in both strikeouts per nine innings and ground ball rates last year.

Arrieta finished the season as the most profitable pitcher in baseball, but Ross was on the wrong end of the  luck equation repeatedly, finishing the season with only ten Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NCAA Tournament Hard Numbers, Not Hype

03.21.2016     12:22 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The insanity that was the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is in the rear view mirror, and the hard numbers show a very different story than the mainstream media is reporting.  Just once, I wish I could turn on Sportscenter and find out what was going on against the spread.  But ESPN doesn’t do that, obviously, nor does CBS, TNT, TBS, TrueTV or any of the other major networks, whether they’re involved with televising the Big Dance or not.  That, of course, leaves a void for me to fill.

Carnage!  Madness! Brackets in flames, in shreds!  That was the message from the networks over the weekend.  Bettors, however, saw a very different story.  Betting favorites, in fact, had a winning weekend against the spread over the first four full days of the tournament.

I threw out all the games where there was no true favorite; games with a pointspread of -1.5 or less.  Many of those games — like Notre Dame vs Stephen F Austin on Sunday; a disastrous result for many books — had a switch of favorites at some point between the opening and closing lines.  Notre Dame +1.5 and Stephen F Austin +1.5 were both Read more

Minnesota at Phoenix pk O/U 221.5
Recommendation: Over

Most recent games played by each of these young teams showcased the positive strides that they are making. For Minnesota it was an improbable 99-96 road win over Oklahoma City as +12 point underdogs which gives them a three spread covers in their last four games. In the Suns case, it was a 123-116 loss at Golden State in a game where Phoenix held a 4Q lead as +19 point underdogs. That was the second game since a 21 game injury absence for Suns starting PG Brandon Knight and he had 30 points including seven three pointers. Even though Knight admitted after the game that he’s not there yet, his return makes Phoenix noticeably different offensively. With Knight boosting the perimeter offense and HC Earl Watson’s commitment to feeding the ball inside to 7-1 PF Alex Len (10-of-18, 26 points vs GS), Phoenix is developing a balanced half court attack to go along with their up tempo style. The bench has been strengthened by Knight’s return as well. Meanwhile, Minnesota is much further along with their offensive development as the duo of rookie C Karl Anthony Towns and SF Andrew Wiggins Read more

Phoenix at Orlando -13.5 O/U 215.5
Recommendation: Orlando

Sometimes a write-up is better in graphic form.  I’m going to open this write-up with a chart, detailing the Phoenix Suns on the road since their last road win – at Chicago on December 3rd.

copy_suns.JPG

That’s not just a bad track record.  That’s an off-the-charts bad track record for a hopeless, injury riddled team that is now 3-30 SU in their last 33 games.  It’s surely worth noting that MOST of the losses listed above came without the opponent even taking the Suns seriously, often resting starters against this sorry squad.

When the Suns meet adversity on the highway, they’ve done one thing consistently for the last three months – they crumble like a house of cards.  With an interim, lame duck head coach in Earl Watson, it’s hard to picture a legitimate character change for the Suns in hostile environments down the stretch.

Scott Skiles Magic have notched double digit wins in each of their last two home games.  They’ve got a West Coast road trip just ahead, Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA national champion among my elite level teams.   Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Two years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

I write this article every year before the regular season is over, before the conference tournaments, before the tourney seedings are announced and before a single March Madness game has been played.  Obviously, there is room for a lot to change between now and the Read more

Arizona State at Colorado -7.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Colorado

In the not so distant future, Bobby Hurley will have Arizona State as a contender in the PAC-12. But it's pretty apparent that he and his current squad have tuned one another out. For starters, with two weeks to go in the season, Andre Spight decided to leave the program. It marked yet another player issue as injuries, suspensions, and now a departure have marred what was once a promising season (10-3 start). As for the play on the court, check out ASU's last three games: Lose by 13 at home to fellow bottom feeder UCLA, get destroyed by rival Arizona, 99-61, and trail Utah by margins of 30-2 and 64-19 en route to a 81-46 loss. The only thing Arizona State has to look forward to is the slim chance of a run in the PAC-12 Tournament. But before they get there, they'll have to play the second of the dreaded "elevation" trip of Salt Lake City to Boulder. They do get an extra day off having not played since Thursday but based on their current form, it won't matter. And we can expect a prime effort from the home side as Colorado (20-9, 9-7) can ill-afford a "bad loss." A Read more
