SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you like to read books on sports betting, earlier this year “No Grey Areas: The Inside Story of the Largest Point Shaving Scandal in History and the Consequences Thereafter” was published. It's the story of the infamous Arizona State basketball point shaving scandal. Here's a fairly positive review of the book.

MLB Gambling News: Kansas City places Young and Medlen on DL

05.13.2016     06:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Perhaps some addition by subtraction as Kansas City placed Chris Young (6.68 ERA) and Kris Medlen (7.77) on the DL. The Royals, whose starters rank 24th in ERA at 4.91, will move relievers Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy into the rotation. Both pitchers will be on a pitch count until they gain enough endurance. Gee is slated to toss Saturday while Duffy will get the nod of Sunday -- both games against Atlanta.

Let's all dream about Mayweather vs. McGregor

05.10.2016     08:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Look, we’d all love to see Floyd Mayweather get pummeled. But Conor McGregor is not the answer. The mythical fight has Floyd as a -2000 favorite which is probably a little short.

"Floyd went mad after Conor said he would crush him and knock him out in 30 seconds, he's obsessed with making Conor eat his words," someone who was not identified told The Sun. "It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn't reveal the identity of his opponent until last night when he told friends he'll be fighting Conor."

NBA Playoff Betting: Curry unlikely to play in tonight's Game 4

05.09.2016     07:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Golden State's Steph Curry is currently listed as doubtful for tonight's Game 4 in Portland. Interestingly, since taking a 37-17 lead at the end of the first quarter in Game 1, Golden State has been outscored by Portland by nine points over the last 11 quarters. The Warriors are -5 road favorites with a total of 214.

"I would just say he's doubtful for tomorrow," Kerr told reporters Sunday, "but slowly and surely making progress."

"He looked about like he looked yesterday in terms of movement," Kerr said. "Conditioning is going to be an issue, but hopefully he can get more and more work in and we'll see how it comes up tomorrow in terms of a night of sleep coming off the workout."

Journalist resigns for not being able to write about Sheldon Adelson

04.27.2016     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Old fogey Sheldon Adelson owns the Las Vegas-Review Journal so it stands to reason that its journalists aren't allowed to write anything critical about the man -- even though 99.2 percent of what he does deserves criticism. LVRJ columnist John L. Smith recently resigned over this rule which was handed down by newly appointed editor Keith Moyer. Adelson and Smith have crossed paths in the past with the former suing the latter for libel back in 2005. Moyer claims the decision was his own and Adelson has no influence on what goes on in the newsroom. Umm, yeah.

"His disdain for the working press and its prickly processes is palpable — and easily illustrated by his well-known litigiousness," Smith wrote in the R-J. "I experienced this firsthand when Adelson sued me for a few lines I'd written in my 2005 book "Sharks in the Desert: The Founding Fathers and Current Kings of Las Vegas." At the time, my daughter Amelia was being treated for brain cancer. After an excruciating civil process, during which I was forced to

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Sacramento Kings at Phoenix Suns

Sacramento +6 at Phoenix O/U 218.5
Recommendation: Sacramento

Pair of non-playoff teams with different perceptions on how they’re approaching these meaningless final games. Phoenix is a team people see as still giving effort while Sacramento is a disgruntled group that can’t wait for the season to end. To some extent, that’s why Phoenix is favored by any amount in this matchup and the -6 that we see right now has the absence of Kings top player DeMarcus Cousins tacked on to it. The Suns have a key injury of their own as Archie Goodwin who has played very well down the stretch is expected to miss tonight’s game. That leaves Phoenix with just one PG (Ronnie Price) and puts the Suns' backcourt at a distinct disadvantage in this game. Rajon Rondo should play tonight but even if he doesn’t, the combination of Darren Collison (27 pts yesterday), Seth Curry (averagining 17.0 pts L5G) plus shooting guards James Anderson and Ben McLemore gives Sacramento four guards who are playing hard and will own talent and depth advantages tonight. Phoenix isn’t significantly better than Sacramento at the C position even with Cousins on Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing the early season MLB betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Matt Harvey lost again on Sunday, with the Mets priced as high as -280 here in Las Vegas.  Chris Archer leads the majors in strikeouts, while King Felix ranks second as I write this early Monday morning. Their two teams -- Tampa and Seattle -- teams are a combined 0-4 in the four starts from those two aces.   I closed out last week writing about how betting on aces – the guys that advanced metrics really, truly love – has evolved into a negative expectation wager over the last few years.  The quants have emerged as the dominating force in the MLB betting marketplace and there’s no way that I’ve uncovered to beat them at their own game.

So, I’ve been focusing on the opening week of the MLB season with an anti-quant mentality, looking to take advantage of what the betting markets are undervaluing, not overvaluing.  If the markets are too tilted towards starting pitching, that leaves three areas that aren’t appropriately priced, in my opinion – lineups, bullpens and streaks.

There’s already early season action for streak bettors, with the Orioles winning while the Twins and Braves keep Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Nashville Predators

Colorado at Nashville O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Nashville -1.5 +140

Two Central Division foes will clash for the last time tonight as the Nashville Predators host the Colorado Avalanche. Nashville has already punched its ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite their current four-game losing streak, which continued over the weekend when the Preds blew a 2-0 lead and lost in a 3-2 shootout to San Jose on Saturday night. Colorado is fighting to stay alive to grab the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference as they trail Minnesota by five points with only three contests remaining. They have lost five of their last six games and head coach Patrick Roy lit into his club after their 5-1 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. He called out forward Matt Duchene for celebrating his 30th goal of the season when they were down 4-0. The celebration wasn't anything over the top but for Roy to make that a focal point shows that this team is clearly frustrated. As for the Preds, they need to build some positive momentum heading into what will be a tough postseason as they will be in the Pacific Division quadrant for at least the first two rounds. The Preds are 5-4 this Read more
