Big weekend for Las Vegas bettors and sportsbooks

01.04.2013     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas sportsbooks gear up for a big weekend starting with Saturday's two NFL Wild Card matchups and ending Monday with the BCS National Championship.

“The national championship game will be equivalent to the pro games for us,” Wynn Las Vegas Race and Sports Director John Avello said. “Normally, the pro games are bigger, but this year they’re all going to be big writes.”

“I’d suggest that game will be the biggest turning point of the weekend,” Vaccaro said. “I’m almost sure we’ll need Minnesota, but not because of straight bets. The Packers will be tied into every parlay and teaser.”

“People who are betting Alabama are going to lay the 9.5 points,” Vaccaro said. “But there are a lot of people who would just rather root for Notre Dame to win. We’ve gotten a little attacked on the Notre Dame moneyline. That’s what we’re seeing so far, and I think that could be what we keep seeing.”

Las Vegas oddsmakers painfully remember Week 9 of the NFL regular season

01.02.2013     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers look back the disastrous NFL Week 9 in which favorites went 10-2 ATS and seven games went OVER the total.

"It's like you're a passenger trapped on a train to hell," said Jay Rood, whose 12 MGM Resorts' sports books at properties including Mandalay Bay, Mirage and Bellagio took a seven-figure hit that day.

"We know people will bet the Packers regardless, but all it takes is one sharp to say, 'Here's $50,000 on the Vikings,' to counteract making a [quick] line simply for the public," Kornegay said.

"Looking at this, I can tell you we'll need the underdogs to win in every game. Again," he said.

Vegas sportsbooks happy to see San Francisco's win over New England

12.17.2012     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco's win over New England and Detroit's egg at Arizona helped Las Vegas sportsbooks turn a profit for Week 15.

"The Lions losing was huge for us," said Osborne. "You basically had two teams playing for nothing, both on long losing streaks, but the public all sided with the Lions and their offense. The Cowboys’ overtime win against the Steelers was also good for us. It was the last posted event for us and all the major liability from the day made the Steelers a pretty big loss for us."

"Everything we won on the day would have been given back had the Patriots covered the spread," said South Point sports book director Bert Osborne.

Nevada's push for online poker goes stagnant

12.17.2012     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You can stop holding your breath, legalized online poker in Nevada will have to wait until at least 2013. Great read on the current situation courtesy of the Las Vegas Sun.

“As much as I would prefer a different outcome the reality is that we have simply run out of time in the legislative calendar to pass an Internet poker bill," Reid said. "I am disappointed but Senator Heller and I remain committed to this issue and it will be a priority for us in the new Congress.”

“I think this is sort of typical of politicians: It’s never Congress’ fault that they didn’t get their act together; there’s always some other reason,” said Alan Feldman, spokesman for MGM Resorts International, a member of the AGA. “If you’re a Democrat, it’s the Republicans’ fault; if you’re a Republican, it’s the Democrats’ fault; and if you’re trying to toe the line with both, it’s someone else’s fault. If someone wants to use that as an excuse Read more

Las Vegas sportsbook betting kiosks compromised

12.04.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like some bettors took advantage of a few glitches in Leroy's betting kiosks.

The scheme, discovered during the NCAA men's basketball tournament in March, involved exploitation of a weakness in the kiosks. The schemer or schemers would repeatedly hit the deposit button on the kiosks immediately after inserting cash, causing the wagering account to be credited for twice the amount of cash inserted. This resulted in ''cash on hand'' shortages in the accounting journals for the affected kiosks, the regulatory complaint says.

Las Vegas sportsbooks are allowed to lay off bets at other books

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting interview with Sporting News and the Nevada Gaming Control Board's Chief of Enforcement. One question that a lot of folks are curious about is whether or not sportsbooks can lay off bets at other sportsbooks. Apparently they can, but not offshore and they must identify their intentions when doing so.

Train route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in the works

11.26.2012     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Introducing the X Train, a proposed railroad route between Southern California and Las Vegas. For $99 each way, you can hop on train in Fullerton, roll with your bros to Vegas, drink as much as you can, maybe win a few bucks, and pass out on the ride home all without having to deal with pulling your car over nine times so your buddy Steve can dry-heave in the desert.

"The whole idea is when you get on a train, you feel like you're in Las Vegas," said Michael Barron, president and CEO of the $100 million venture that hopes to launch its maiden voyage on New Year's Eve 2013. "It's essentially a nightclub on wheels."

Everything you need to know about online poker in Nevada

11.19.2012     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article from the Las Vegas Sun about the details of Nevada's push for online poker.

Without federal action, Internet poker likely will be approved and regulated on a state-by-state basis, like the lottery. Poker operators likely will face different rules and taxes by state. There will be no federal oversight, and Nevada regulators may not play the important regulatory role Reid envisioned.

UNLV students learn ins and outs of gaming industry

11.12.2012     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows that 90% of the classes you took in college were pointless. But UNLV is offering classes that are not only cool but ones that better prepare students for a career in the gaming industry. Good read courtesy of the Las Vegas Sun.

"We're not teaching students how to gamble," insists UNLV gaming professor Gary Waters, who teaches introductory classes in the gaming lab. "We're teaching students how to manage casinos. This is really important for the gaming industry."

"Our primary objective is so students can relate academic information to actual table games and slots, and get some operational experience," Waters said. "The more they get involved, playing it and dealing it, the better they perform in their internships and the more successful they are in their careers."

"The landscape has changed in the last few years," Waters said. "There are more college-educated executives leading these casinos. Education is more highly recognized in Read more
