NHL Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Montreal at Toronto -110 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs last season after suffering through many injuries in net and up front.  There were some big changes to the lineup over the summer and an emphasis has been placed on puck possession going forward.  Teams in the NHL have been preaching puck possession since 2005, but the Leafs are trying to take their hockey analytics to another level.  Whether or not that level with translate into more wins remains to be seen.  The preseason has been good to the Leafs as they finished atop the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.  Preseason hockey holds a lot more weight than other preseason sports and I actually see wins and losses in the preseason translate into how well a team will start off the season.  Montreal will be in the hunt for the playoffs this year.  Despite some of their offseason shakeups, they still remain one of the top 8 teams in the Eastern Conference.  Toronto will be playing in front of the home crowd tonight and they've beaten the Canadiens in four straight season opening games.  Look for that Read more

NHL Handicapping: Tampa Bay Lightning on the upswing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s October and a new NHL season is upon us! With no work stoppages or Olympic breaks teams should be very focused throughout the course of the season. For today and tomorrow we'll focus our attention on a few teams in the Eastern Conference from a “buy” and “sell” perspective. And in case you missed it here are links to free season o/u points recommendations on the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers from last week. Enjoy!

Buy the Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay should see an improvement over last season on the simple fact that Steven Stamkos enters the season healthy and ready to go.  The late season addition and subsequent re-signing of Ryan Callahan has also bolstered the forward core.  The Lightning should have little trouble scoring this season just like prior seasons.  I have always been hesitant to fully back them however because of their lackadaisical approach defensively.  With the Read more

Buy the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are my biggest value play in the Eastern Conference heading into the season.  There is absolutely no chance they will be worse than last season’s 52-point total and -91 goal differential (both last in the NHL).  It’s easy to say the Sabres will be better based on a new year alone, but they worked hard to overhaul their lineup over the summer.  The books aren’t seeing much room for improvement as they have Buffalo lined at 64.5 points which is lowest in Read more

Washington Capitals
Season Over/Under Points 88.5
Recommendation: Over

Last week my blog centered around the Florida Panthers and my recommendation to go Under their season point/win total.  This week with baseball winding down and few games on the card I decided to once again focus on a specific NHL team and see if we can beat the market.

The Washington Capitals come into the 2014-15 with new coach Barry Trotz at the helm.  The departure of Adam Oates behind the bench and the addition of longtime Nashville Predators coach Trotz has me immediately looking to back a talented yet underachieving Capitals team.  The past seven seasons have seen the Caps finish with greater than 88.5 points (90, 97.4 extrapolated in a shorten season, 92, 107, 121, 108, and 94 points).  Washington has been on a downward turn the past three seasons, but a change in system and style will catapult them back into the top of the Read more

Florida Panthers
Season Over/Under Points 72.5
Recommendation: Under

With the NHL upon us, I decided to supplant my weekly MLB free play with an NHL season over/under points recommendation.  Some sportsbooks have early season point totals up and available.  I see immediate value with taking the Florida Panthers under.  This is a franchise that is complete disarray.  The change of ownership has done nothing to put the city of Sunrise, Florida at ease that one, they will win, and two, that they will remain in Florida.  The owners are speaking out of both sides of their mouth.  Despite the recent letter to fans that the team will remain in Florida, co-owner Doug Cifu said recently in August, "The arena and the team have lost a significant amount of money year over year for the last 10-plus years and the current business model is not sustainable."  The doesn’t sound very positive to me coupled with the face that this team is young, inexperienced, and prone to mistakes.  The trade for Roberto Luongo and the signing of Willie Mitchell is just a band aid to cover up an otherwise dreadful Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Elias) +115 at LA Angels (Rasmus) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Seattle

The Los Angeles Angels have secured a playoff spot thanks to an 8-1 win Monday night against the Seattle Mariners.  Seattle is still in the hunt for an AL Wild Card spot and will need every win they can muster until the end of September.  The Angels said all of the right things after the game and did not celebrate their victory, but one has to think there is the possibility of a letdown tonight.  The Angels will send reliever Cory Rasmus to the hill tonight as LA looks to piece together innings from its bullpen in replacement of Garrett Richards. Rasmus has been plenty capable coming out of the bullpen, but he is not a starter, and when there are that many moving pieces that manager Mike Scioscia has to figure out, there is much more room for error.  Angels’ slugger Albert Pujols left the game Monday night with an apparent hamstring injury.  Pujols insists he is good to play Read more

Tampa Bay (Archer) at NY Yankees (Kuroda) -130 O/U 7
Recommendation: New York

The NY Yankees are in a must win situation.  In fact they are in 21 must win situations to end their season.  Monday was their last day of rest before attempting to make one last push towards the postseason.  Five games back of Seattle for the second wild card spot seems doable if the Yankees can get hot, but they will also have to rely on a few teams to play .500 baseball.  "I'll never give up on them; it's just not my personality,'' Girardi said.  "They just have to continue to grind it out, try to get better every day."  The good news for the Yankees is they trot out Hiroki Kuroda to the mound tonight against the Rays.  Kuroda has been the Yankees most consistent pitcher since the All-Star break.  Kuroda won his last start out against the Rays in a 4-2 win at Tropicana Field on August 17th.  Yankee bats are excited to see Tampa starter Chris Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Seattle Mariners at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Paxton) at Oakland (Gray) -140 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

The Oakland A's got back on track on Monday afternoon with a 6-1 thumping of the Seattle Mariners.  Oakland was swept by the LA Angels earlier in the week and desperately needed to right the ship.  The addition of Adam Dunn in the middle of the lineup immediately paid dividends as he homered in the first inning and the A's never looked back.  Dunn seems to have sparked something in that Oakland clubhouse as he looks to get to the postseason for the first time in his long career.  James Paxton and Sonny Gray face off on the hill tonight in what should be a duel. Paxton has slowly come around for the Mariners since being taken off the DL in early August.  He’s put together a 7-1 record in his first 11 starts with a 1.03 WHIP and a 1.71 ERA.  His counterpart, Gray, has been rock solid for the entire season.  He did go through a bit of an August swoon -- expected for such a young, Read more

Tampa Bay (Cobb) at Baltimore (Chen) -105 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

The Baltimore Orioles demolished the Tampa Bay Rays last night 9-1.  That's good news for the Orioles as they had previously lost three straight and managed just four runs in those three games.  Baltimore will have a tougher test tonight against Rays starter Alex Cobb who has really turned around his season.  Cobb has won his last two starts giving up just one earned run.  In fact you need to go back nine starts (7/4) to find the last game where Cobb gave up more than two runs.  Needless to say, Cobb's last six starts have all gone Under the total.  Baltimore counters with Wei-Yin Chen.  Chen has also had a string of under the total games to his name.  He has seen five straight games go under the total and seven of his last eight.  Chen has pitched well as of late in Camden Yards going 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA.  I'm not expecting much to be accomplished by either Read more
