MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Wheeler) +105 at Chicago Cubs (Arrieta) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: New York

The New York Mets are slowly putting together a respectable season as they are now one game under .500 after winning six of their last seven games.  Scoring runs have been a problem for most of this season but they’ve managed to get above average performances from their starting pitching staff on most nights. Arguably their best arm, Zack Wheeler, takes the hill this evening. Wheeler has all the ingredients to be a top-of-the-rotation arm – nearly a K per inning, 53.4% GB rate, and 3.49 xFIP. Wheeler has put together back-to-back strong outings that saw him allow just three earned runs and 10 hits in 13 innings.  Perhaps most telling is his sparkling 16-1 K/BB ratio in those two games.  The Cubs are a great matchup for Wheeler because they have some of the league’s worst numbers vs. right-handed pitching while Wheeler shows strong splits vs. right-handed bats. MLB Handicapper Free Play: Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves

Milwaukee (Gallardo) at Atlanta (Teheran) -140 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Atlanta

After back-to-back solid showings the Atlanta Braves offense appears ready to turn the corner after an anemic stretch of play that saw them produce 2.5 runs over a 24-game span. They plated six runs in a win at St. Louis and then last night exploded for 15 hits and 9 runs against the Brewers. The biggest positive though was seeing the normally free swinging Upton brothers and Evan Gattis combine for six walks. That type of production should continue tonight against Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo who after a strong start to the season has been pounded around his last three outings. Atlanta's Julio Teheran has been sharp for much of the season with a 2.20 ERA. He ran into difficulty last time out – a rare warm day in San Francisco with the wind blowing out. Outside of the outing, Teheran has been a quality start machine (8 straight). In the late innings, the Braves will have the edge with MLB's best xFIP Read more

NY Rangers at Pittsburgh -165 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Game 7 tonight in the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins should be a dogfight.  The Rangers have battled back and won the last two games after falling behind 3-1 in the series.  Momentum seems to be on the Rangers side as they head into Pittsburgh as +140 underdogs.  Game 7's have been particularly kind to the New York Rangers as they have won their last four series deciders with the O/U going 0-3-1 as well.  This is however one of the toughest Game 7 scenarios they’ve faced in recent memory. The Penguins have been in this situation before and have the experience to get back on their horse and put together an elite effort tonight.  Pittsburgh hasn't played many Game 7's in recent years, but their three most recent has seen them go 2-1 with both wins going under the total. This has been a tale of two series as the NY Rangers really turned things around and rallied behind Martin St. Louis for Game 5 and Game 6 right after his mother had passed away. Overall I am expecting a very low scoring game. We will see very Read more

Boston -130 at Montreal O/U 5
Recommendation: Boston

Rarely in the NHL playoffs do you see both road teams favored, but that is what we get tonight as Boston travels to Montreal for Game 3 in a 1-1 series while Chicago travels to Minnesota with a 2-0 series lead.  Despite losing serve on home ice Boston takes the momentum of Game 2 with them on the road where they sport the best road record in the Eastern Conference.  Boston once again came back from a two goal deficit to defeat Montreal 5-3.  The Bruins are a team of momentum; once you wake the sleeping giant there is no going back and the mental mindset of that team is righted and it's all she wrote.  I saw this transformation by the Bruins after they scored to cut Montreal's lead to 3-2 on Saturday.  You could sense at that instance the Bruins regained their confidence and began believing again.  This is the most important game of the series in my mind.  Boston will win Game 3 and will win the series in 5 games.  I've seen momentum and confidence with great teams in hockey for a long time, and I know when a series is over.  The Bruins win this one and Read more

Oakland (Kazmir) at Texas (Perez) -110 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

The Oakland A’s square off against the Texas Rangers tonight in the second game of their three game series.  Oakland won the first game on a brilliantly pitched 4-0 shutout last night.  We should see much of the same from two of the most dominate lefties in the American League so far this season.  Oakland's Scott Kazmir and Texas's Martin Perez have both been unhittable on the hill to start the 2014 campaign.  Perez sports a 0.00 ERA and hasn't given up an earned run in 26 innings!  Kazmir has a miniscule 1.35 ERA over 20 innings this season. They also rank among the league leaders in groundball percentage which is a big key pitching in Texas. We've already seen this total get bet down to 8 from an 8.5 opener. There is still value in this number with both of these starters on the mound.  Read more

NHL Playoffs Handicapper Free Play: Boston Bruins at Detroit Red Wings

Boston -140 at Detroit O/U 5
Recommendation: Boston

Boston heads to Detroit tonight with the series knotted up at one game apiece. The Bruins played their typical grind it out game throughout Game 1, but couldn't seem to break through offensively.  It took a great individual effort from Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk late in the third period to get the Red Wings the 1-0 win.  Game 2 was much different as Boston was able to take advantage of its chances and put some goals on the board.  They went to the net hard and they were rewarded.  They didn't deviate from their plan and they stifled Detroit's offense once again allowing just one goal in a 4-1 win. Detroit's home ice advantage has been virtually nonexistent the past two seasons as they were a meager 18-13-10 at Joe Louis this regular season and just 4-4 over the past two postseason. Boston owned the best road record in the Eastern Conference this season at 23-12-6 and in the past three postseason the Bruins are 6-3 away from home in the first round.  Going into Detroit will be just another day at the job for the big bad Bruins.  Boston has the confidence and swagger back Read more

Tampa Bay (Odorizzi) at Baltimore -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Tampa Bay and Baltimore get together tonight for their second game of the series.  Last night saw the Orioles lay the lumber on young Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer.  The O's strung together 12 hits over his five innings and the result could have been much worse than the 7-1 final.  Baltimore has been swinging the bat well to start the season as they are second in the AL with 121 hits, but their main problem has been discipline at the plate.  They should be able to see plenty of pitches tonight from Rays starter Jake Odorizzi.  Odorizzi had a terrible outing in Kansas City last week giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs in just 5 innings.  He's struggled to find the plate in both his starts averaging over 17 pitches per inning.  Baltimore counters with Miguel Gonzalez on the mound who hasn't been much better.  In fact Gonzalez has given up 10 earned runs already in just his 9.1 Read more

Philadelphia -165 at Florida O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

As we come upon the last 6 days of the NHL regular season, most of the "must win" teams are priced heavily with juice.  I don't mind laying juice now and then as long as I feel I'm getting value.  As most of my clients and followers know, I play the majority of my NHL totals Under and last night all three games easily cashed with a combined five goals scored in those games!  Hockey is a difficult sport for the books since the totals can really only be one of three choices 5, 5.5, or 6.  The amount of juice they attach to the total is where they try and make up for their deficiencies, but even then we find lots of value in say taking the Under 5.5 -145 instead of Under 5 +110.  Five is such a key number that getting that hook when you have the Under is sometimes worth .50 to .60 cents in my opinion.  Most professional handicappers would scoff at laying that kind of juice on a total, but in the NHL it is how I've grinded out profits for years.

With all that being said, we find lots of value in tonight's Flyers and Panthers Under.  -125 is Read more
