MLB Handicapper Free Play: Houston Astros at New York Yankees

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Oberholtzer) at NY Yankees (Capuano) -160 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

The Yankees return home to the Bronx after going 2-3 on their brief road trip.  Things could have been a lot worse as the Yankees stole two games against Tampa on Saturday and Sunday.  The Bronx Bombers have been anything but as they continue to struggle scoring runs.  They've scored just 14 runs in their last 7 games with the under going 6-1 in those contests.  The Houston Astros come into town tonight after a good offensive showing in Boston over the weekend.  Houston managed 24 runs while splitting the four-game set with the Red Sox.  The Yankees should have their hands full again tonight as Brett Oberholtzer takes the mound for the Astros.  Oberholtzer has gone 7 innings in each of his last three starts giving up five earned runs over that span.  He has been the Astros most consistent starter since the All-Star break.  New York counters with veteran Chris Read more

Tampa Bay (Helickson) -120 at Texas (Tepesch) O/U 9
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

Monday night the Rays hammered Texas 7-0 and they look to have their way again tonight with the hapless Rangers.  Texas is a league worst 46-72 and is a team playing with zero urgency.  Players have all but mailed it in with the exception of Adrian Beltre who continues to have a career year.  Tampa starter Jeremy Hellickson should have little problem navigating the woeful Rangers lineup tonight.  Hellickson put together a stellar performance against the best offensive team in MLB his last time on the hill.  He gave up just 2 hits and 1 earned run over seven innings of work against the Oakland A's powerful lineup. "That looked like the Rookie of the Year Hellickson," manager Joe Maddon said. "My thought is now that he's done it once he can really take off." Hellickson gets a step down in class tonight and will have no problem translating that confidence from last Read more

Philadelphia (Hamels) -120 at NY Mets (Gee) O/U 7
Recommendation: Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies take the field tonight against one hottest home teams in baseball at the New York Mets have won eight of their last nine games at Citi Field. But despite their recent success and hot bats they have a lot to overcome tonight against Cole Hamels. Hamels and has been one of the lone the bright points for Philadelphia in what has become a year to forget.  He hasn't allowed more than three runs in his last 11 starts, posting a sparkling 1.74 ERA during that stretch.  The Mets will also have to overcome the lackluster performances starting pitcher Dillon Gee has been putting together.  Gee was absolutely shelled against the Brewers in his last outing, giving up six hits, two walks, and six earned runs over just five innings.  The start prior to that he allowed four earned runs in pitcher friendly Petco Park. One has to wonder if Gee is pitching at 100% after coming Read more

NY Mets (DeGrom) at Seattle (Ramirez) -110 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Seattle

The Seattle Mariners got the job last night against the NY Mets in a 5-2 win. The score wasn't indicative of the game as the Mariners hit the ball all over the park on Mets starter Jon Niese and deserved to put up more runs.  Seattle has been able to hang around the wildcard playoff race with a 53-46 record.  Playing in the difficult AL West has been a challenge, but the starting pitching has been Seattle's saving grace.  The Mariners have Erasmo Ramirez on the mound tonight as they look to rest over worked starters Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma another day.  Ramirez hasn't had the prettiest of starts this season, but he has turned the corner as of late giving up just two earned runs in his last four starts.  Jacob deGrom takes the hill for the Mets tonight and this young starter has been impressive at times.  The Mets just don't have the bats to take advantage of a weaker Read more

San Francisco (Bumgarner) at Oakland (Gray) -140 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

We scored a nice 20* winner on San Francisco-Oakland under the total last night and will fire right back with the same play this evening as stud starters Madison Bumgarner and Sonny Gray take the hill. The A’s have wisely spaced out some of Gray’s starts in order to preserve him for the postseason. He went through a few rough patches in June but bounced back strong last time out against Toronto (7 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER). He faces a Giants offense that is trending in the wrong direction. Since Angel Pagan last played (June 14) the team’s OBP has dipped 20 points. The Giants are 6-14 without Pagan in the lineup and hitting a meager .219 with a .280 OBP. They also may be missing Pablo Sandoval (questionable, elbow) who is a much-needed bat against right-handed pitching (.287/.770). Bumgarner is an ideal matchup vs. the A’s coming from the left side. Oakland’s team OPS vs. lefties is a Read more

Texas (Martinez) at Baltimore (McFarland) -135 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Texas Rangers have been reeling of late losing 10 of their last 12 games and six straight on the road.  The Baltimore Orioles on the other hand have quietly put together a solid first half of the season that sees them just one game back in the American League East. Baltimore has done most of their damage offensively despite playing without a full lineup for most of the season (Manny Machado, Chris Davis, Matt Weiters, and J.J. Hardy have all missed time).  They are sitting third in the league with a .265 batting average and lead the league in homers for the month of June.  Nick Martinez takes the hill for the Rangers tonight so don't expect the bleeding to stop any time soon.  Martinez has been winless in his last six starts and has seen his ERA balloon to 4.65.  Lefty T.J. McFarland comes out of the bullpen tonight for the Orioles. He’s not going to “wow” anyone Read more

Oakland (Kazmir) -135 at NY Mets (Colon) O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

It’s a very interesting storyline tonight as Oakland’s Scott Kazmir takes the mound against New York’s Bartolo Colon.  The A's released Colon when they signed Kazmir in the offseason and both clubs have benefited greatly from each signing. Colon is back in top form after a slow start to the season, posting a 5-0 record with a 1.66 ERA in his last six starts.  His track record at Citi Field is nothing short of phenomenal with a 2.34 ERA and 0.952 WHIP in five starts. Kazmir has been lights out all season posting a 9-2 record and 2.08 ERA.  Oakland skipper Bob Melvin had this to say about Kazmir, "It's a broken record talking about him because we are seeing basically the same game out of him...he's been absolutely terrific."  Kazmir obviously faces a very anemic Mets offense that has been dreadful at home with .217 BA/.298 OBP/.327 SLG/.625 OPS splits. Oakland’s Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Keuchel) at Washington (Roark) -135 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

The Houston Astros head to Washington Tuesday night to begin a quick two-game stint before heading to Tampa Bay.  Houston may want to skip this Washington trip altogether as they've won just 1 game in their last 11 meetings.  The Astros might be just what the Nationals need after dropping three straight against the Cardinals with all three games going under the total.  Tonight should be no different with runs at a premium. Both games this season have gone under the total, and the last five meetings have done the same. Both pitchers have been lights out this season, with Houston left hander Dallas Keuchel posting a WHIP of 0.99 and Washington's Tanner Roark at 1.06.  And neither one has been doing it with smoke-and-mirrors. Roark ranks in the top 25 in the NL in xFIP while Keuchel has produced some of the best season-to-date numbers among AL starters. The books have finally adjusted the total Read more

Cleveland (Kluber) -110 at Kansas City (Vargas) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

There may not be a hotter team in baseball right now than the Cleveland Indians.  Last night they pounded the Texas Rangers 17-7 to improve to 9-1 in their last 10 games.  Laying a price has not been an issue with the Tribe during this run either as we've seen them priced above -130 just twice during the last ten games; both of which they won by three runs.  Baseball is a very streaky sport and not only are the Indians hitting the ball and winning games, but they trot out Corey Kluber who has been just as hot on the mound, going 4-0 in his last six starts – all victories.  He sports a 2.83 ERA on his recent six game streak including a WHIP of 1.06.  The Indians will face left handed starter Jason Vargas. Cleveland has been abusing left handers during their last ten games hitting a robust .341 and I don't expect their bats to slow down tonight.  We are getting a very Read more

NY Mets (Wheeler) +105 at Chicago Cubs (Arrieta) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: New York

The New York Mets are slowly putting together a respectable season as they are now one game under .500 after winning six of their last seven games.  Scoring runs have been a problem for most of this season but they’ve managed to get above average performances from their starting pitching staff on most nights. Arguably their best arm, Zack Wheeler, takes the hill this evening. Wheeler has all the ingredients to be a top-of-the-rotation arm – nearly a K per inning, 53.4% GB rate, and 3.49 xFIP. Wheeler has put together back-to-back strong outings that saw him allow just three earned runs and 10 hits in 13 innings.  Perhaps most telling is his sparkling 16-1 K/BB ratio in those two games.  The Cubs are a great matchup for Wheeler because they have some of the league’s worst numbers vs. right-handed pitching while Wheeler shows strong splits vs. right-handed bats.
