Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Toronto Blue Jays

03.17.2015     03:06 PM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

The Toronto Blue Jays have the pieces to cause a ruckus in the AL East with one of the more dangerous lineups in baseball. It'll be a fun team to watch and potentially profitable if the pitching staff can hold up for the most of the year.

Toronto Blue Jays
2014 W-L:
83-79
2014 O/U: 78-79-5
2014 Profits: +1.2
2015 O/U Wins: 83
2015 AL East Odds: +215
Projected Starting Rotation: R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, Drew Hutchison, Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez
Key Departures: Melky Cabrera, Adam Lind
Key Additions: Josh Donaldson, Russell Martin

Handicapper’s Take: “Two years ago, oddsmakers and the betting markets decided that Toronto was ready to make the jump to AL East contender. The end result was a total disaster as the team finished dead last. Last season, expectations were much more tepid and the Jays went over their season wins total of 79.5. This year, it's middle ground with an 83-win projection. There are some concerns Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Arizona Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings

Arizona at Los Angeles -340 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

The Los Angeles Kings come into tonight's game against the lowly Arizona Coyotes as -340 favorites!  Probably a fair price considering the demise of the Coyotes this season and these last remaining regular season games for the Kings being of the "must win" variety.  This reminds me a lot of 2011-12 where the Kings got super-hot at the end of the regular season and barely got into the playoffs as the eight seed in the Western Conference.  From there they dismantled the competition en route to winning the Stanley Cup.  The lethargic start and middle of the season for LA has given way to desperate hockey that has shown why they are the defending Cup champions going 12-4-1 in their last 17 games.  When you think of great Kings hockey you think of that suffocating style where they outnumber the opponent all over the ice, and grind them down defensively and on the offensive cycle.  We are starting to see more and more of that recently and their scores reflect it.  Arizona is going to have a very difficult time scoring goals to say the least.  They Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Baltimore Orioles

03.13.2015     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

Off 96 wins and a trip the ALCS, the Baltimore Orioles remain virtually the same team heading into 2015. That may or may not be a good thing with terms like "overachieve" and "regression" being commonly used to describe 2015's projections.

Baltimore Orioles
2014 W-L:
96-66
2014 O/U: 69-89-4
2014 Profits: +34.8
2015 O/U Wins: 82.5
2015 AL East Odds: +370
Projected Starting Rotation: Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris, Miguel Gonzalez, Kevin Gausman
Key Departures: Nelson Cruz, Nick Markakis
Key Additions: Travis Snider

Handicapper's Take: "The Baltimore Orioles have put in some great years under skipper Buck Showalter but can they sustain the seemingly unsustainable level they’ve been playing at?  The major question mark for this team will be their starting pitching. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris, Miguez Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez are all average to slightly Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Boston Red Sox

03.09.2015     01:59 PM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

No shock to see the Boston Red Sox attempt to reload following last season's disaster. In the ultra-competitive AL East, a "worst to first" scenario, while plausible, is far from a lock despite some of the numbers being attached to this squad in the preseaon betting markets.

Boston Red Sox
2014 W-L:
71-91
2014 O/U: 71-86-5
2014 Profits: -26.5
2015 O/U Wins: 85.5
2015 AL East Odds: +195
Projected Starting Rotation: Clay Buchholz, Rick Porcello, Wade Miley, Joe Kelly, Justin Masterson
Key Departures: Yoenis Cespedes, David Ross
Key Additions: Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez, Rick Porcello

Handicapper's Take: "The Boston Red Sox, which finished a division worst 71-91 in 2014 (25 games back of the Baltimore Orioles) are the odds on favorite to win the division!  One may look at this team on paper and immediately give them the title of “team to beat”, but I’m not so quick to back a team with this many Read more

Nashville at NY Rangers -120 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Today is the NHL trade deadline and if you think we've seen the last of the big deals you are surely mistaken.  The New York Rangers were very active over the weekend making three separate trades to help bolster their playoff run in the short term.  They are expecting big defensive acquisition Keith Yandle to play tonight.  Nashville comes into New York looking to straighten things out after two straight losses.  The Predators have been the NHL's best team this season, doing it both from an offensive and defensive standpoint.  Nashville ranks seocnd in the league in goals against average so expect the Rangers to have a tougher time breaking through the defense than they have these past few weeks.  New York has really added another offensive element to their game this season with the immense amount of speed through the neutral zone, but expect the Predators to put lots of defensive pressure on the Rangers tonight.  Last meeting was a 3-2 win for Nashville in early February and not once has their last six meetings resulted in a score of greater than five Read more

Minnesota +105 at Vancouver O/U 5
Recommendation: Minnesota

Last Monday I gave out a free play on the Minnesota Wild against the Vancouver Canucks which won in convincing fashion, 5-3.  Nothing has significantly changed in the last seven days to suggest this game will be any different.  In fact the Minnesota Wild continue to plow through the Western Conference en route to grabbing a playoff spot.  The Wild have now gone 8-0-1 in their last nine games.  Their defense and goaltending has been lights out and exactly what you think of when you picture a tough Minnesota team.  Since being traded from Arizona in mid-January, goaltender Devan Dubnyk has revitalized his career with a 10-1-1 record, 1.60 GAA, and four shutouts.  This matchup is exactly the same as last week and the fact of the matter is Vancouver simply does not match up well against Minnesota.  Vancouver being on home ice changes nothing except that we get an underdog price on the Wild.  This is a team that is healthy and playing with a ton of confidence.  There is no reason to hop off the train now, especially against a Canucks team that has lost Read more

Vancouver at Minnesota -145 O/U 5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Minnesota Wild have strung together five straight wins and are making a push at just the right time.  They’ve gotten back to tough defensive hockey during this stretch having surrendered just three goals in those five wins. Even more impressive is the 26.6 shots per game allowed. All told, the Wild shutout three of those five opponents.  Tonight they face the Vancouver Canucks in what should be another stepping stone for this talented group.  Just last week they defeated the Canucks 4-2.  Now on their home ice the Wild look to dictate that play again as they've won five of the last six meetings between these two teams.  Vancouver is coming off of a dominating 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.  As strong as the Canucks look, they just don't match up well against the Wild.  Minnesota has killed 12 straight power plays and they will keep the dangerous Sedin brothers at bay tonight on the man advantage.  All signs point towards a strong push here from Minnesota.  When all pistons are firing on this team they are hard to Read more

Florida at NY Rangers -200 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

The Florida Panthers travel to Madison Square Garden to face a New York Rangers team that they've struggled mightily against in recent meetings.  Going back to last season, New York has won the last four games against the Panthers by a combined score of 16-8.  Three of those four games went over the posted total of 5.  The Rangers finally broke out of their offensive funk against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, a game in which they won 4-1.  Florida has been on a downslide in recent weeks, losing six of its last seven games and giving up 26 regulation goals during that span.  Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault wants to have his defense become more active and have the defenseman push the play up ice, making that first pass quickly and efficiently.  I'm sure that is music to the ears of guys like Ryan McDonagh and Dan Boyle, both offensive defensemen that had had the reins pulled on them for most of the year.  Both of these teams should open up their play tonight as they always seem to do against each other.  The posted total of 5 is a relatively Read more

Carolina at Toronto -145 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

The Toronto Maple Leafs return to their home ice tonight after an abysmal winless four-game road trip that saw them manage just one goal.  Needless to say, all four games went under the total.  It's been a struggle for the Leafs the second half of the season as they've now lost seven of their last eight games with more than two goals just once during that span. The Carolina Hurricanes come into tonight's game playing good hockey with little to show for it.  The effort has been there from a team that is lacking talent and depth, but it unfortunately hasn't translated into many wins.  The Canes have killed 33 straight opponent power plays and that will only add to the defensive matchup we have tonight.  Cam Ward is likely to be back in net tonight and he has owned the Leafs with a 1.86 GAA the last eight meetings.  Both teams are clear “under” teams at this point and we have the luxury of grabbing 5.5 with only a moderate amount of juice.

Colorado +150 at Washington O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche head to Washington playing their best hockey of the season.  It was further validated Saturday afternoon when the Avs got down two quick goals against the Dallas Stars, but rallied back for a 4-3 win.  That makes it three straight for Colorado and five out of their last six.  Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been of of the main keys to this resurgence.  Varlamov is 6-2 with a 1.97 GAA and two shutouts since returning from a groin injury on Dec. 23.  Colorado is hitting their stride right now," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "They've got Varlamov playing at the top of his game and they're sort of getting their game in order, being more of the team that you saw last year and playing very well."  Trotz couldn't be more right as the Avs look like the team from last year that was so successful.  They will have their hands full tonight in Washington facing a Capitals team that is equally as hot.  Colorado has owned this series in previous meetings, and tonight will be no different.  Colorado has the 6th best PK Read more
