NHL Handicapper Free Play: Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild

Vancouver at Minnesota -145 O/U 5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Minnesota Wild have strung together five straight wins and are making a push at just the right time.  They’ve gotten back to tough defensive hockey during this stretch having surrendered just three goals in those five wins. Even more impressive is the 26.6 shots per game allowed. All told, the Wild shutout three of those five opponents.  Tonight they face the Vancouver Canucks in what should be another stepping stone for this talented group.  Just last week they defeated the Canucks 4-2.  Now on their home ice the Wild look to dictate that play again as they've won five of the last six meetings between these two teams.  Vancouver is coming off of a dominating 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.  As strong as the Canucks look, they just don't match up well against the Wild.  Minnesota has killed 12 straight power plays and they will keep the dangerous Sedin brothers at bay tonight on the man advantage.  All signs point towards a strong push here from Minnesota.  When all pistons are firing on this team they are hard to Read more

Florida at NY Rangers -200 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

The Florida Panthers travel to Madison Square Garden to face a New York Rangers team that they've struggled mightily against in recent meetings.  Going back to last season, New York has won the last four games against the Panthers by a combined score of 16-8.  Three of those four games went over the posted total of 5.  The Rangers finally broke out of their offensive funk against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, a game in which they won 4-1.  Florida has been on a downslide in recent weeks, losing six of its last seven games and giving up 26 regulation goals during that span.  Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault wants to have his defense become more active and have the defenseman push the play up ice, making that first pass quickly and efficiently.  I'm sure that is music to the ears of guys like Ryan McDonagh and Dan Boyle, both offensive defensemen that had had the reins pulled on them for most of the year.  Both of these teams should open up their play tonight as they always seem to do against each other.  The posted total of 5 is a relatively Read more

Carolina at Toronto -145 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

The Toronto Maple Leafs return to their home ice tonight after an abysmal winless four-game road trip that saw them manage just one goal.  Needless to say, all four games went under the total.  It's been a struggle for the Leafs the second half of the season as they've now lost seven of their last eight games with more than two goals just once during that span. The Carolina Hurricanes come into tonight's game playing good hockey with little to show for it.  The effort has been there from a team that is lacking talent and depth, but it unfortunately hasn't translated into many wins.  The Canes have killed 33 straight opponent power plays and that will only add to the defensive matchup we have tonight.  Cam Ward is likely to be back in net tonight and he has owned the Leafs with a 1.86 GAA the last eight meetings.  Both teams are clear “under” teams at this point and we have the luxury of grabbing 5.5 with only a moderate amount of juice.

Colorado +150 at Washington O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche head to Washington playing their best hockey of the season.  It was further validated Saturday afternoon when the Avs got down two quick goals against the Dallas Stars, but rallied back for a 4-3 win.  That makes it three straight for Colorado and five out of their last six.  Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been of of the main keys to this resurgence.  Varlamov is 6-2 with a 1.97 GAA and two shutouts since returning from a groin injury on Dec. 23.  Colorado is hitting their stride right now," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "They've got Varlamov playing at the top of his game and they're sort of getting their game in order, being more of the team that you saw last year and playing very well."  Trotz couldn't be more right as the Avs look like the team from last year that was so successful.  They will have their hands full tonight in Washington facing a Capitals team that is equally as hot.  Colorado has owned this series in previous meetings, and tonight will be no different.  Colorado has the 6th best PK Read more

Pittsburgh -140 at Florida O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

The Pittsburgh Penguins head to South Florida to face a scrappy Panthers team tonight.  I mentioned before the season started to not buy into what the Penguins were preaching in terms of wanting to play a more fast and up-tempo style.  Everyone was excited for what new coach Mike Johnston would bring to the table and people were lining up to bet this team over the total on a nightly basis.  The truth is they don't have the personal anymore on the back end to make this style possible.  This was a dead nuts under team in the preseason and they continue to be an under squad so far this season, going 13-19 O/U.  Florida has been in the same boat all season as they continually play a gritty style where they struggle to score goals but are tough in their own end.  Florida has managed just 2.1 gpg, but they are giving up a respectable 2.4 gpg.  This has resulted in a 10-16 O/U mark.  We are currently seeing a total of 5 with the Under getting a healthy +120 comeback number.  I am more than happy supporting the total at this price, and even more so if it ticks Read more

Ottawa at Buffalo +125 O/U 5
Recommendation: Buffalo

Perhaps no one has had a bigger turnaround to their season than the Buffalo Sabres.  This was a team that was all but forgotten after a 3-15 start to the season.  The Sabres have since rattled off a 9-3 record where they have consistently been +150 underdogs or more.  Goaltender Jhonas Enroth has been outstanding during this stretch giving up just two goals a game.  Buffalo has shown a propensity to struggle scoring goals all season, but they have figured out a way to win the low scoring, one-goal games.  At the other end of the ice, Ottawa has seen major changes of late and they are headed in an opposite direction.  Ottawa fired head coach Paul MacLean last week.  They haven’t responded the way one would think when losing a coach, and new coach Dave Cameron certainly has his hands full with this group of players.  Expect a very low scoring game here tonight with plenty of value on a home dog that has shown no signs of stopping the positive run they've been on.

New Jersey at Carolina -110 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

It is generally wise to stay away when two teams are performing poorly in the standings like the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes.  The Devils have gone 2-8 in their last ten games while the Hurricanes have gone 3-7.  Upon looking deeper into the way these teams are losing games tells a bit of a different story.  I have been impressed with the Devils’ effort and grit despite being without a much of their lineup.  Four top forwards in Mike Cammalleri, Patrik Elias, Martin Havlat, and Travis Zajac have been out or continue to be out for the Devils.  This has left a team that has averaged just two goals in their last ten games looking for ways to score.  The Hurricanes meanwhile will be without forward Eric Staal who is nursing a foot injury.  Carolina's offensive production is on par with the Devils with just 15 goals in their last eight games.  Both of these teams are riding under the total trends with the Hurricanes 0-4 O/U and the Devils 3-8-1 O/U.  This game will have very limited offensive explosiveness and plenty of safe defensive Read more

Colorado +115 at Arizona O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Colorado

Colorado heads to Arizona tonight with both teams underperforming in the standings.  The Avalanche have to be the bigger disappointment of the two as no one predicted the Coyotes to make much noise in the West.  Despite the teams taking up two of the last three spots in the Western Conference, one team is heading in the right direction while the other remains stagnant.  The Avalanche dug themselves into a pretty big hole early in the season, losing six of their first seven games.  But they look to have righted the ship with three wins in their last four games and perhaps a season defining moment in their come-from-behind victory on Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  I am always looking for positive momentum and confidence building situations with good teams, and it looks like we have just that after the Avs mounted a two-goal comeback in the second and third periods to win 4-3.  They are still playing without a few key players in their lineup, but they have been plugging and playing just fine with their call ups from the AHL.  Arizona has been Read more

Florida at Los Angeles -185 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Two of the biggest under teams in the NHL meet up tonight in LA as the Florida Panthers visit the Kings.  These teams have played their last five meetings under the total.  The Panthers have proven throughout the year that scoring goals consistently is a tough task but they also limit their opponents on opportunities.  Yes, Florida has been great offensively over its last four games, but the pace and matchup tonight against the Kings will send them back to reality.  The Panthers not respond well to teams that grind along the boards.  The Kings are the prototypical grind-it-out squad that beat you with depth and strength along the boards.  Los Angeles averages just 2.44 gpg and allowed only 2.11 gpg so don't expect the Kings to run over the Panthers either.  The return of Kopitar into the Kings lineup has helped on offensive end of the ice, but more importantly on the defensive end as well.  Having that big body presence in the lineup makes this defense even more formidable.  Both teams are relatively healthy so I expect a tight checking, low scoring Read more

Florida at Boston -200 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

When you think of the Boston Bruins you think of hard-nosed physical hockey with a lot of depth. Despite the recent injuries they've had, they still are playing with that tenacity that has made them successful.  They've had success so far this season against the weaker opponents in the NHL and we should see more of the same tonight against a Florida Panthers team that struggles to score goals.  Florida has played three straight 2-1 games, while managing to win two of the three.  The Panthers have also allowed an NHL-low 17 regulation goals-against which has resulted in 7 of their 9 games going under the total.  Though not as strong, the Bruins also trend under the total of 4-7 O/U. Both teams dealing with offensive injuries which should assist in this game going under the current posted total of 5.
