College Football Betting: Multiple mid-season firings

10.13.2015     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A handful of coaching situations for bettors to be aware of.

Steve Sarkisian (USC) - Reports recently came out that Sarkisian has a major drinking problem. USC had no choice but to let him go prior to three straight games against ranked opponents including Saturday's trip to South Bend.

Replacement - Clay Helton who has served as USC's OC and stepped in as interim HC when Ed Orgeron bailed after hearing he had no shot at landing the full-time gig. Helton has been with the program for six years.

Dan McCarney (North Texas) - Two years ago, the Mean Green were riding high with a 9-win season and bowl win. Last year they took a step back (4-8) and this season has been nothing short of a disaster with blowout losses to SMU, Southern Miss, and FCS Portland State.  It's likely NT's only shot at a win is the season finale vs. equally woeful UTEP.

Replacement - Offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Chris Cosh will serve as co-interim head coaches.

Randy Edsall (Maryland) - Edsall was reportedly going to last until the end of the season but the Terps decided the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spartans and Buckeyes still highly ranked, still not covering pointspreads

10.12.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Talking about the college football national championship race in mid-October is a pointless endeavor.  The mainstream media hypes the unbeaten teams and the elite level programs among the Power 5 conferences – that’s what boosts ratings, what the general public seems to be interested in.

But we all know that the teams that look elite in mid-October aren’t necessarily the teams that look elite when the pressure ratchets up in November and beyond.  Look no further than last year at this time, when teams like Auburn, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Oklahoma all were ranked as Top 10 teams; championship contenders.  Those four teams finished the season with 19 losses between them, each team suffering at least four SU losses AFTER Week 7 of the season.

So here we are in 2015.  Ohio State has been ranked #1 since the preseason, and since the Buckeyes haven’t lost in SU fashion, they remain #1.  Michigan State opened as the #5 team in the country (AP Top 25; they were #6 in the coaches poll).  Currently, the Spartans rank #4 in the coaches poll and #7 in the AP poll, another team that the pundits have been Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New England Patriots at Dallas Cowboys

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New England at Dallas
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -7 O/U 49
CRIS Current: New England -8 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: New England

Dallas lost to New Orleans last Sunday Night due to two primary factors.  First, their passing game with Brandon Weeden behind center instead of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant sidelined has been borderline inept.  That’s not going to change with an extra week of practice, nor will their QB play improve dramatically if Weeden gets benched for the just acquired Matt Cassel, who has crashed and burned at every previous NFL stop since his one successful season in New England back in 2008.

Second, the Cowboys very thin defense has become an injury riddled mess; a factor that won’t change significantly even with Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain expected to make their season debuts this week following NFL mandated four game suspensions for both guys.  A Cowboys secondary that couldn’t stop Matt Ryan two weeks ago or Drew Brees last week is ill prepared to stop Tom Brady and the Patriots devastating short passing attack this Read more

Minnesota at Purdue
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Purdue pk O/U 47
CRIS Current: Minnesota -3.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Purdue

The betting markets play very close attention to NFL injuries, with the lines swinging fairly significantly on gameday based on player availability.  But in college football, the betting markets only seem to react significantly when there is a quarterback injury that sidelines an effective starter.  That’s how we see lines like this one, with Minnesota as road favorites as they travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue this Saturday.

The Gophers have a third-year starter at QB in Mitch Leidner.  But Leidner has been completely ineffective – only 91 completed passes for 950 yards and four TD’s in their first five games of the season – because of the injuries surrounding him.  He’s not fully healthy either.  Head coach Jerry Kill: “He’s been beat up. You get hit — and we’ve been beat up on the offensive line — and he’s taken some shots. And you take those kinds of Read more

College Football Betting Trends: PAC-12 road teams continue to crush

10.09.2015     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's been The Year of the Road Team in the PAC-12 thus far as visitors have recorded a sick 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS in conference play including Washington's outright win as +17 underdogs at USC last night. All four of Saturday's PAC-12 road teams are catching over a touchdown; three of which +10 or more. Interestingly - and in no way correlated - over the last five years the PAC-12 has by far the lowest homecourt winning percentage (60.2%) of any college basketball power conference according to Ken Pomeroy.

Week 3
Stanford (+9.5) 41 at USC 31

Week 4
Stanford (-14) 42 at Oregon State 24
California (+1) 30 at Washington 24
UCLA (+1) 56 at Arizona 30
Utah (+10) 62 at Oregon 20
USC (-4) 42 at Arizona State

Week 5
Washington State (+16.5) 28 at California 34
Oregon (-6.5) 41 at Colorado 24
Arizona State (+12.5) 38 at UCLA 23
Arizona 17 at Stanford (-12.5) 55

Week 6
Washington (+17) 17 at USC 12

College Football Betting Preview: South Carolina Gamecocks at LSU Tigers

South Carolina at LSU
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -18.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: LSU -18.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: LSU

Change in venue as South Carolina’s home tilt against LSU was moved to Baton Rouge due to historical flooding in the Columbia area. For the Gamecocks, there’s a lot of things to think about other than football but on short notice they’ll be faced with the insurmountable task of traveling to one of the toughest venues in the country to face of the toughest teams in the country. Note that the Tigers were -13.5 road chalk prior to the change in venue.

Making matters worse for the Gamecocks is the health of true freshman quarterback Lorenzo Nunez. Nunez has played decent thus far considering the circumstances but after throwing three picks in last week’s loss at Missouri, he certainly needs the reps and hasn’t gotten much of them this week due to an ailing shoulder.  Despite playing a fairly difficult schedule, the Gamecocks are averaging a somewhat respectable 5.39 yards per play. This week's opponent and venue however suggests Read more
