College Football Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers at Florida Gators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri at Florida
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Florida -4 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Florida -6 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida -1.5
OTTO Sports’ Recommendation: Missouri

We're halfway through the college football season and the beauty of the betting markets is the increased amount of varying opinions. Some bettors go on feel and what they see whereas others plug in a power rating and mechanically play what spits out. Either way it creates situations where value is created not because of oddsmakers but because of line moves. The Florida-Missouri game is a good example. The Tigers opened a respectable +4 but are now as high as +6. That may not seem like a significant move but considering three of the Gators' four SEC games were decided by a field goal, a point, and overtime, it could very easily be the difference between an ATS win or loss.

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins at California Golden Bears

UCLA at California
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -8.5 O/U 76.5
CRIS Current: UCLA -7 O/U 74.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UCLA -8.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: California

I pointed out on the podcast Tuesday that through six games UCLA has had one impressive showing: a 62-27 win at Arizona State. Now it should be pointed out that Virginia and Memphis are much improved and quarterback Brett Hundley went down early in the Texas game. But my concern is more centered on the last two weeks: a home loss as 13-point favorites to Utah and a no-show in last week's blowout loss to Oregon. Add it all up and we're talking about a 1-5 ATS record and a classic case of an overrated football team.

The brings us to this weekend's pointspread. Last week, Cal opened as a pick 'em and was bet up as high as -4.5 (closed -3.5) vs. Washington (who was coming in off a bye). This week, Cal Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Syracuse offense remains work in progress

10.14.2014     01:47 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Not a bad effort from Syracuse's offense following the injury to starting quarterback Terre Hunt and demotion of offensive coordinator George McDonald. The Orange racked up 412 yards on 6.15 ypp in last week's 38-20 loss to Florida State. The problem of scoring touchdowns in the red zone, however, remains. Both of Syracuse's touchdowns came on long pass plays once the game was out of reach. On the season, their red zone touchdown rate is 39% which ranked 122nd nationally.

"There'll be some wrinkles and changes, and some philosophical things," Shafer said, "but right now we're really focusing in on 1. Game-planning week-to-week with the players we have, and 2. Trying to develop some of the kids who aren't playing yet and trying to see if they can do some of those things as we move into our recruiting process."

College Football Betting News: NC State suspends two starters

10.14.2014     01:33 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've seen Louisville bet up from -14 to -17 following news of seven NC State players, including two starters, suspended for Saturday's game. The Wolfpack will be without starting linebacker Jerod Fernandez and safety Justin Jones. Two other players were listed on the two-deep. Bad timing for NC State after back-to-back blowout losses to Clemson and Boston College.

"These are good young men who made a mistake in not recognizing that this activity could have resulted in someone being injured," Doeren said in a statement. "We have discussed this with them and they understand that they are being held responsible for their actions. The information was referred to the university's office of student conduct as well. Our players admitted their mistake and we will help them learn from it as well."

College Football Handicapping: Golden Nugget GOY vs. CRIS - Week 8

10.13.2014     12:03 PM     Printer Friendly
Week 8's breakdown of Golden Nugget's Game of the Year lines vs. CRIS's current numbers. It's a great tool to spot changes in perception from oddsmakers and the betting markets. A few big changes since the summer with Boise State now -17 vs. Fresno after opening -4.5. UCLA's stock has plummeted (-22 to -7 vs. Cal) and Cal has been on the rise though Golden Bears may still offer value after closing -3.5 vs. Washington. The Baylor-West Virginia line has been cut in half with the Bears now -8 (opened -9.5). Wouldn't come as a shock to see that line down to -7 by kickoff.

College Football Gambling: Indiana loses starting QB Sudfeld, turns to true frosh

10.13.2014     11:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld is out for the season with a shoulder injury. The Hoosiers now turn to true frosh Chris Covington who in relief duty vs. Iowa completed only 3-of-12 passes for 31 yards and two interceptions. Not a huge sample size, but Indiana's next four opponents (Penn State, Michigan, Rutgers, and Michigan State) all rank seventh or worse in passing defense in Big Ten play. IU is currently a +13.5/+14 home underdog to Michigan State for Saturday.
