College Football Handicapping: UNLV's Sherry expected to start behind banged up o-line

UNLV at San Diego State -18 O/U 57

UNLV's Nick Sherry (back) is expected to start Saturday's game at San Diego State. It doesn't sound like he is 100% and he'll be working behind an injury-riddled offensive line.

“Every week it seems like somebody’s dealing with something,” said senior tackle Yusef Rodgers, who this week is listed as doubtful with a leg injury.

“It is kind of discouraging because we had high hopes,” Rodgers said of the offensive line. “We feel like with what we’ve got, we’re still doing all right.”

College Football ATS Trends: Oregon laying monster price of -47 vs. Colorado

Colorado at Oregon -47 O/U 67.5

Out of curiosity, we looked up the betting results of college football conference games lined -45 or higher. Since 1986, it has occurred 26 times which underdogs 15-10-1 ATS. We've seen three such instances over the last four years with the favorite (USC, Boise State twice) obviously winning outright but failing to cover. This weekend, Oregon had been bet up from -45.5 to -47 against Colorado.

We have yet another huge SEC matchup this week, with top-ranked Alabama hosting the unbeaten Mississippi State Bulldogs. Unlike the last few weeks, where we saw short-lined matchups between Florida- LSU, South Carolina-LSU, Florida-South Carolina, Alabama is laying a hefty -24. Clearly, Mississippi State is not thought of as a “real” contender in the SEC despite its unblemished record. This biggest reason for this is their lack of quality wins due to a fairly soft schedle. The Bulldogs’ most impressive win came at home against Tennessee – and Alabama just dismantled the Vols in Knoxville, 44-13, last week.

Mississippi State’s other victims include Auburn Read more

Oklahoma State has some quarterback concerns entering Saturday’s Big XII showdown against TCU. Backup J.W. Walsh, who has been starting for injured starter Wes Lunt, is now out for the rest of the year with a knee injury. Walsh had played in six games and gone 102-of-154 passing for 1,467 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lunt is currently listed as probable to return for this game from his own injury but he still may not be quite at 100% yet.

TCU’s defense, while not being the same shutdown unit we’ve seen from previous Gary Patterson squads, still has better numbers across the board than Oklahoma State. TCU is 17th in the nation in total yards allowed at 313 per game and Read more

The winner of this game takes leadership of not only the Legends Division, but also control of a spot in the Big Ten Conference Championship game. With that at stake, expect fully focused efforts from each side. Each is off of a fourth quarter come-from-behind win last week but Nebraska failed to cover the pointspread for the third consecutive game.

Defense has been a sore spot for the Cornhuskers who have allowed 154 points in their four games versus BCS teams (38.5 ppg per contest). In Big Ten play, they’ve given up 27 points or more in every game but what’s interesting is that NU has only twice this season given up more than 4.3 yards per play. That number indicates the defense has been Read more

College Football Handicapping: Michigan content to go conservative route

Michigan at Nebraska -2.5 O/U 57.5

Michigan looks to be taking a page out of Notre Dame's playbook by embracing a more conservative brand of football. The Wolverines have relied much more on their defense this year, holding each of their last five opponents to 13 points or less. And offensively, the days of letting Denard Robinson improvise as he goes appear to be over. In his first four games, Robinson averaged just under 25 pass attempts per game and threw eight interceptions. In his last three games, Robinson averaged 18.6 pass attempts per game with only one pick. UM has gone under the total in three of their last four contests.

"It goes back to simply you do what it takes to win the game. Sometimes it’s just not as pretty as you want. It happened in the Sugar Bowl. Same thing. We didn’t play well at all. But we Read more

College Football Betting: Adjustments have Syracuse's defense on the upswing

Syracuse at South Florida -2.5 O/U 52

A few adjustments along the defensive line have resulted in significantly better numbers for the Syracuse Orange.

“Coach Daoust did a great job of working with Coach Shafer and getting us in position and lined up so we wouldn’t have to play that many double-teams and combo blocks,” senior defensive tackle Deon Goggins said. “We had to make it hard on them (opposing offensive lines) and not let them make it harder on us.”

The results have been dramatic. The Orange (3-4, 2-1 Big East) defense allowed 176.25 rushing yards per game during the 1-3 stretch prior to the bye week. It has allowed 105 rushing yards total in its 2-1 run since, an average of only 35 yards per game.
