College Football Handicapping: UCLA loses best defender

09.24.2015     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We probably don't talk enough about impact injuries on the defensive side of the football but here's one worth noting. UCLA stud linebacker Myles Jack will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Jack was considered by most to be one of the top defensive prospects in the country. He also doubled as a running back and returned kicks. The Bruins are currently -3 road favorites for Saturday's trip to Arizona.

who would replace Jack in the lineup for that key game, Mora’s comments were again brief. “I wouldn’t talk to you about that even if I knew, and I don’t,” he said.

Mora had been philosophical a day earlier, discussing Moreau’s injury. “Guys are going to get hurt. Guys are going to get dinged up in games,” he said. “You’ll have adversity. It’s how you handle it that defines you.”

College Football Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers at Kentucky Wildcats

Missouri at Kentucky
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - SEC
CRIS Opener:
Kentucky -1.5 O/U 44.5
CRIS Current: Kentucky -3 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Kentucky

Saturday marks the fourth SEC meeting between Missouri and Kentucky with the Tigers winning and covering the last three in dominating fashion. In those three contests, Mizzou outscored UK 101-37, including last year's 20-10 win in Columbia.

The main issue for Missouri has been offense with less than 300 yards against Arkansas State and Connecticut. The Tigers are averaging 3.2 yards per rush and quarterback Maty Mauk just 5.9 per pass attempt. They rank 109th nationally in points per game (23.3), 116th in total yards per game (325) and 119th in rushing yards per game (107.7). And that's against far less competition that what they’ll see on Saturday. On the season Mauk has completed just 52.5% of his passes to go with four interceptions. The Tigers' ground game should get a boost this week as running back Russell Hansbrough is slated to return. The senior rushed for over 1,000 yards last year but missed last week and has carried the ball just Read more

ESPN continues to push envelope with betting talk

09.23.2015     09:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While ESPN decided to ditch its footballl "cover alerts" --- which to its credit was a fantastic idea --- there are no plans to back off of the pregame gambling talk.

“We did it once. I didn’t like it, and we stopped it,” John Wildhack, ESPN’s executive vice president of programming and production, told the SBJ scribes. “To me, it was too overt. Part of everything we do has a little bit of trial and error.”

“We certainly try to be mindful of the culture around us,” Sankey said, “but that doesn’t mean that we accept it as entirely appropriate. There is an existing concern about gambling becoming more central to the sport (and the broadcast). Although there has not been any official discussion as a conference about this issue, we need to be attentive to the integrity of the game.”

College Football Betting Preview: North Texas Mean Green at Iowa Hawkeyes

North Texas at Iowa
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Iowa -24.5 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Iowa -24.5 O/U 54
Recommendation: Under

In order to get this game over the current total of 54, you'll need faith that North Texas can not only move the football but put points on the board. Dating back to last season, the Mean Green haven't been able to do either. Last season, playing in defense-less C-USA, North Texas averaged only 21.9 ppg. This season, they managed only 240 total yards against a well below average SMU defense and last week struggled for three quarter to score against another sub-par defense in Rice. Had it not been for a garbage time 93-yard touchdown pass, North Texas may not have topped 400 yards of offense. Now they go on the road to face a very capable Iowa defense.

North Texas is in a bind because quarterback Andrew McNulty is completing 50% of his passes meaning in order to stick around, they'll need to run the football. The problem with that is Iowa hasn't allowed anything on the ground this season with three opponents combining for 153 yards at 1.87 ypc. Barring any short Read more

College Football Gambling: Stanford's Hogan listed as game-time decision vs. Oregon State

09.23.2015     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan suffered a sprained ankle in the third quarter of last week's win over USC. He played the rest of the game though is listed as a game-time decision for Friday's contest at Oregon State. Head coach David Shaw said that if close to healthy Hogan would play even without going full speed at practice. The Cardinal don't have much in the way of options with their second and third stringers combining for one career pass.

"We are fortunate it was not season-ending," Shaw said. "If he can do a little bit on Thursday, it might be a game-time decision."

"Structurally, he was not going to make it worse," Shaw said. "He was limping to and from the huddle but he scrambled when he needed. He gritted it out and did it."

College Football Handicapping: Cal Golden Bears remain hot commodity in betting markets

09.22.2015     02:31 PM     Printer Friendly

Another week, another big move towards the California Golden Bears. They've been arguably the most popular team in the betting markets thus far. Check out CRIS's line moves toward Cal its first four games. College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
USC -5.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 63
Recommendation: Over

Offenses should have the upper hand in Saturday’s PAC-12 showdown in Tempe. USC has had no problems moving the football with quarterback Cody Kessler throwing for close to 1,000 yards at a 78.7% completion rate and a sparkling 10-0 TD-INT ratio. The Trojans piled up over 50 points in their first two games against Idaho and Arkansas State and proved their offense is good enough to be productive against better competition when they hung 31 points and 427 total yards against a very solid Stanford defense last week despite the losing effort. This bodes well considering in its one true test this season against Texas A&M, Arizona State’s defense was gashed for 425 total yards (178 rushing, 247 passing) and 38 points. In last year’s meeting vs. USC, the Sun Devils allowed nearly 500 yards and 34 points

On the flip side, ASU’s offense has yet to click. It took them an entire half to get going against woeful New Mexico and looked sluggish against Read more

College Football Gambling: Fresno State dealing with quarterback issues

09.22.2015     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Lots of drama going on with Fresno State heading into Saturday's conference opener at San Jose State. Quarterback Chason Virgil is out for the year with a broken clavicle while fellow signal caller Zack Greenlee was arrested for public drunkenness. There's a chance Greenlee will be suspended for at least some of Saturday's contest. Linebacker Brandon Hughes was also arrested and could face suspension. Markets have yet to react with San Jose State holding as a -4.5 favorite.

“We’re aware of the incident. We’re gathering details and we’ll withhold further comment until the investigative process plays out,” coach Tim DeRuyter said Monday. “Discipline will be handled internally. He will practice this week, and Saturday we’ll make another announcement on it.”
