College Football Handicapping: Nebraska says no letdown vs. Penn State

11.19.2013     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska at Penn State -1.5

Any hope Nebraska had of reaching the Big Ten Championship was eliminated following last week's home loss to Michigan State. The team is saying all the right things in terms of playing for pride, no letdown, etc. heading into Saturday's game at Penn State. Under Bo Pelini, the Cornhuskers are 14-5 SU and 10-8-1 ATS off of a loss.

“We’re competitors. We want to win ballgames. That’s the main thing,” Rose said. “And then for the young guys, just continue to build chemistry on the team, continue to fight. The season is not over. Just because we’re not going to get to the Big Ten championship this year doesn’t mean our season is over.”

College Football ATS Analysis: Golden Nugget's GOY vs. CRIS - Week 13

11.18.2013     01:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Checking in with the college football betting markets as we compare the Golden Nugget's Games of the Year from early June vs. CRIS's current numbers. There are some wild differences this week with Wisconsin -10 during the summer and now -16 for their trip to Minnesota. Has anyone exceeded expectations more than the 8-2 Golden Gophers? Baylor went from +11 at Oklahoma State to -8.5. Iowa was catching doubles from Michigan but now nearly a touchdown favorite. BYU also went from a double-digit underdog to a road favorite at Notre Dame.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC Super Bowl Contenders

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s late November.  Thanksgiving is next week.  And that means it’s time for me to take a break from my typical team notes column that I’ve been writing here in the Vegas Wiseguy Report since the start of the NFL season.

It’s time to focus on the big boys – teams with playoff aspirations.  Who can get hot down the stretch and make us some money winning games and covering pointspreads?  Which squads are legitimate Super Bowl contenders; which are pretenders.  Let’s take look through the NFC this week, gauging which squads have ATS value moving forward, and which squads have already reached their zenith, poised to tumble back to earth down the stretch.

I did not include notes on Carolina (they don’t play till Monday Night) and Dallas (on bye this week) due to space limitations.  That leaves Philadelphia, the New York Giants, Detroit, Chicago, Green Bay, New Orleans, Seattle, San Francisco and Arizona to consider; all of whom remain live for the postseason as Week 12 approaches.

College Football Gambling: Ohio State upset it didn't cover the spread vs. Illinois

Putting to rest the theory that college kids don't know the pointspread of their games...

"We're disappointed by [winning at Illinois] 60-35. We didn't cover whatever spread that we needed to, didn't score enough points to boost up our rating. That's a reason why we're disappointed with the way that we played. It's reality."

College Football Gambling: Teams fighting for bowl berths

11.18.2013     08:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a look at a few teams and games with bowl berth implications. Obviously there will be a handful of teams with six wins that won't participate in the postseason but this should give you a primer of those teams knocking on the door.

Rutgers (5-4) - The Scarlet Knights have three games remaining but have lost three of their last four by margins of 14, 35, and 35. Short week of prep for Thursday's game at UCF.

UNLV (5-5) - The Rebels haven't been to a bowl game since 2000. Two games remain: at Air Force (Thu.), and vs. San Diego State.

Navy (6-4) and San Jose (5-5) - The Midshipmen have already accepted a bid to the Armed Force Bowl. The Spartans were sitting pretty two weeks ago but back-to-back losses and the season finale vs. Fresno make Friday's game against Navy a must-win.

Pittsburgh (5-5) and Syracuse (5-5) - These two teams hook up on Saturday in the Carrier Dome with the Panthers currently a short road favorite.

Tennessee (4-6) - The Vols have lost three straight but come in off of a bye week and play host to Vanderbilt (6-4). They'll Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Utah Utes at Oregon Ducks

Utah at Oregon
Saturday, 1 pm PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Oregon -25 O/U 64
CRIS Current: Oregon -28 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oregon -26
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Oregon

A lot of bettors would look at Oregon as unplayable this weekend after having its hopes of a BCS Championship crushed in somewhat embarrassing fashion. But there are other factors to consider in this matchup that in my opinion offset the potential letdown for the Ducks.

For starters, unlike a majority of the PAC-12, Utah has little to no experience playing against Oregon's offense. The last meeting between the two schools was 2009 – Chip Kelly's third game on the job. Second, this is not an ideal spot for the Utes either. After losing back-to-back road games, Utah had a 19-7 lead against Arizona State but gave up a touchdown with a little over two minutes remaining to lose 20-19. Win that game and Utah goes to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wyoming Cowboys at Boise State Broncos

CRIS Current: Boise State -23 O/U 68.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Boise State -21.5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Boise State

Wyoming stunk up the joint at home against Fresno last Saturday Night; costing my clients and I money in the process.  I expect we’ll get it back here!  After getting out to an early 10-0 lead, the Cowboys wasted several scoring chances, then proceeded to get torched for 48 unanswered points in an ugly blowout loss.

That defeat marked the third blowout loss that the Cowboys have suffered in their last five games.  They’ve got another road game at Utah State to close out the season, which basically means that the Cowboys aren’t going to get to 6-6 and go bowling this year – last week’s loss was essentially their last chance.  Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno has been creating his own Power Ratings for nearly two decades. His numbers are very well respected and an excellent tool for discovering value. Rob’s PRs are a baseline and do not include key injuries or situations but they also don't overreact as much as the betting markets do week to week. Below is a chart of CRIS's current lines and Rob's College Football Power Ratings for Week.

College Football Handicapping: Week 12 Injury Report

11.14.2013     01:40 PM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA running back Jordon James will start Friday vs. Washington. James has missed four of the last five games with an ankle injury. He tried to come back two weeks ago vs. Colorado but was held to eight yards on six carries. Jim Mora Jr. chose to rest James in last week’s 31-26 win at Arizona. With OT Simon Goines ruled ‘out’ Thursday, the Bruins will be without three starting offensive linemen but it’s been that way for the last three games.

Florida lost a 10th player to a season-ending injury when starting LB Antonio Morris tore his meniscus in a 34-17 home loss to Vanderbilt. Morrison is the seventh starter to go down for the year and with OT D.J. Humphries also ‘out,’ UF will be without at least eight starters Saturday at South Carolina. QB Tyler Murphy is expected to be a game-time decision due to a sore shoulder. If Murphy can’t go, Skyler Mornhinweg (yes, Marty’s son) will get the starting nod. Mornhinweg, a redshirt freshman, has never taken a collegiate snap. The Gators are double-digit underdogs (+13.5 as of Wednesday) for just the second time under Will Muschamp.

Mississippi State could be without two Read more
