College Football Handicapping: Missouri starts from scratch with new OC

08.23.2016     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting take on Missouri first-year offensive coordinator Josh Heupel who served at the same position at Oklahoma and Utah State. Note that Heupel was fired from OU after the 2014 season and the following year, the Sooners boasted one of the best offenses in the country though the upgrade from quarterback Travis Knight to Baker Mayfield was a big factor. Last season under Heupel, Utah State ranked 93rd nationally in total offense. He gets a fresh start in Columbia and has a lot of work to do after the Tigers ranked dead last in the SEC at 280.9 ypg of total offense.

“I knew Josh (Heupel) pretty well when I covered Oklahoma,” Haney said. “It just hadn’t gone well for him, whether it was at OU or the injury issues at Utah State. I just don’t know if he’s the guy you want trying to re-imagine that offense. If it does work out, it’s going to take quite a bit of time.”

College Football Betting: Cincinnati looks to improve on penalties and turnovers

08.19.2016     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati brings in Zac Taylor to serve as offensive coordinator. Taylor held the same post with the Miami Dolphins last season. His job will be to shore up some of the sloppiness that plagued the Bearcats in 2015. Despite boasting the sixth-best total offense (537.8 ypg) in the country, the Bearcats ranked fifth in the AAC is scoring offense (33.8 ppg). The reason was penalties (123rd, 72.p ypg) and turnovers (124th, 33 lost).

"It starts with minimizing our turnovers," Taylor said Thursday, after UC's morning practice here at Camp Higher Ground. "We’ve got to average less than one turnover per game, and no pre-snap penalties. I think if we can hit those marks, then we set ourselves on a course to hit a lot of our other goals."

"I think as coordinator you're always looking for a 50-50 split," Taylor said. "In some games I’ve been a part of that, you really strive for that, and the game goes the other way. Sometimes you’ve got to throw it a

College Football Gambling: Rutgers adjusts to life as an up-tempo team

08.19.2016     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with our recent theme of first-year head coaches looking to go up-tempo, we take a look at the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Chris Ash steps in after serving as co-DC at Ohio State. He brings with him 28-year-old OC Drew Mehringer from Houston. Mehringer's offense is referred to as the "power spread" as will feature more pace. Rutgers ranked 13th in Big Ten play in total offense (338.9 ypg) last season.

"There’s some nuances and mechanics that go with the tempo," Blazek said, "and we’re picking up where we left off in the spring. … I like where they’re at."

But he added, "We’ve got some things we’ve got to work on."

"It’s something we’ve had to adjust to [physically]," the redshirt junior said of the faster-paced offense, "but I think it helps us out. It helps keep the defense on their toes. They’re not able to set up and make as many subs as they want, [and] at the same time it helps us

College Football Gambling: Maryland to go up-tempo under first-year coach

08.18.2016     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More new head coaches and more newly implemented up-tempo offenses. With Randy Edsall gone, Maryland first-year head coach DJ Durkin is trying to change the culture of the program and the first order of business is to improve an offense that ranked in the bottom half of nearly every category in the Big Ten. Durkin though appears aware that playing fast also means a defense that coughed up 41+ on five different occasions last season will be asked to participate more than likely wanted.

“(The amount of plays) used to be a big deal,” Bell explained. “You had people up there bragging about how many plays they ran, but at the end of the day it’s about winning the game. Our first year at Arkansas State (in 2014), we were sixth in the country in snaps per game and broke every record in the history in the conference, but we were 7-6 so nobody cared. And then last year, we were 33rd in snaps per game, still broke every record in the history of our conference, but, at the end of the day we were 8-0 in

College Football Handicapping: Mendendall wants Virginia to pick up pace

08.18.2016     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Virginia Cavaliers mark another team attempting to play up-tempo with a first-year head coach. Bronco Mendenhall says he wants the offense to "get with the times" and play as fast as possible. This of course will be a significant departure from former head coach Mike London's system. Virginia's offense actually showed flashes of competence last year as it quietly ranked fifth in ACC play in scoring (27.1 ppg) and total offense (400 ypg). However, on a national level, the Cavs ranked 76th at 5.49 yards per play.

“We train during practice based on the fastest teams in the country,” Mendenhall said. “Our practices are based on who is the very fastest in college football, what is their time between plays. And we mirror that.”

“Basically after a play’s dead, you’ve got to line back up, look at the signal, see what the play is, and get ready and be ready to go,” Eldridge said. “That’s the hardest part, transitioning, because you
