College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at California Golden Bears

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
USC at California
Saturday, Noon PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
USC -6.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: USC -6 O/U 68
Recommendation: Over

The positive response has certainly been there for the USC Trojans in two games since the firing of Steve Sarkisian. USC fell behind Notre Dame 24-10 but came back to take the lead in the second half before letting it slip away in the fourth quarter of a 41-31 loss. However, the Trojans bounced back strong at home against previously undefeated Utah in a decisive 42-24 win. USC outgained Notre Dame and Utah by a combined 141 yards and the offense has been razor sharp with Clay Helton now in charge.

USC’s offense should have success here against a California defense that is improved but still prone to giving up yards and points. The Golden Bears allowed 70 points combined in back-to-back road losses at Utah and UCLA including an alarming 12.4 yards per completion, 7.4 yards per pass attempt, and 259.6 ypg. That will be a problem facing USC quarterback Cody Kessler and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (143 receiving yards and a TD last week vs. Utah) who have been a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UMass Minutemen at Ball State Cardinals

UMass at Ball State
Saturday, 10 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Ball State -3 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Ball State -3 O/U 66
Recommendation: Over

UMass suffered its third straight conference loss last weekend in a 51-35 beat down at the hands of a ranked Toledo club that was actually trailing by 18 points at halftime. The Rockets flexed their muscle after the intermission and hung five straight touchdowns. With the loss, the Minutemen fell to 1-6 on the year as they have now allowed 48 or more points in four games this season.

Ball State dropped a 23-21 heart-breaker to Central Michigan last Saturday. The Cardinals are now 2-6 and like UMass, have had a ton of issues stopping the opposition. Even with Eastern Michigan in the MAC, UMass has allowed a league-worst 557.3 ypg in conference play. Ball State's game numbers are slightly better (458.3) but not from a yards-per-play standpoint as MAC teams are averaging 6.28.

Offensively both squads have the ability to move the football. Despite playing four fairly solid defenses (Temple, Notre Dame, FIU, and Kent State), UMass is averaging a respectable Read more

College Football Handicapping: Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill steps down

10.28.2015     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sad day for the Minnesota football program as head coach Jerry Kill announced his retirement due to health concerns. Associate head coach Tracy Claeys will take over as interim. Under Kill's watch, Minnesota went 32-26 against the spread. This weekend, the Golden Gophers play host to Michigan. The Wolverines, who are off of a bye week (and the wild loss to Michigan State), were bet up from -12.5 to -14.

College Football Betting: Wyoming to start third string QB vs. Utah State

10.28.2015     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The betting markets LOVE to bet against Wyoming and have an excuse to do so again this week with redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Smith expected to start Friday's game at Utah State. Cameron Coffman (shoulder) was downgraded to doubtful and second stringer Josh Allen (shoulder) is also on the shelf. In limited action, Smith has completed 7-of-21 passes for 53 yards. Utah State opened -23.5 but was bet up to -28.

“Obviously that was my first time experiencing big game speed,” said Smith, who completed 3 of 13 passes for 0 yards that game. “I feel like I was a little nervous more and I kind of let that take over at certain parts. Overall I felt like it was a big learning experience and helped me grow and get past that.”

College Football Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers at Utah Utes

Oregon State at Utah
Saturday, 4 pm PT - PAC-12 Network
CRIS Opener:
Utah -23.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Utah -23 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Oregon State

Prior to last week's game against USC, Utah's defense had looked as good as any in the PAC-12. The Utes held the high powered offenses of Oregon, Arizona State, and California to less that 21 ppg. And even though they allowed 42 to the Trojans, keep in mind Utah coughed up the football four times and allowed a pick six. For the game, USC averaged a modest 5.14 yards per play. Back at home, I expect Utah to revert back to it's staunch defensive ways.

Oregon State is a bad football team that last week missed out on a rare opportunity for a win in a 17-13 home loss to Colorado. The Beavers held the Buffs to 4.82 ypp but prior to that had allowed over 7 ypp in three straight games. I'm not sure Gary Andersen is the long term solution in Corvallis. It almost feels like OSU hired him because he had many of the same attributes as former head coach Mike Riley.

But as easy as it is the rail on Oregon State, we need to talk about this Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones

Texas at Iowa State
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Texas -8 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Texas -6.5 O/U 53
Recommendation: Under

All four of Texas' Big XII games have gone under the total, and three of the four weren't even close as the market has had a tough time adjusting. The Longhorns have run the ball more than any team in league play (51 times per game) and attempted the fewest passes (18.3 times per game). There's no reason to think they'll change that mentality off of back-to-back wins and facing a team in Iowa State the has difficulty stopping the run.

A lot of change for Iowa State heading into this game as offensive coordinator Mark Mangino was let go and sophomore quarterback Joel Lanning will get the start. Lanning took over for senior Sam Richardson in last week's loss to Baylor. His stats look good (12-of-17, 144 yards, 3 TDs) though the Cyclones were trailing 35-0 midway through the second quarter. The change is clearly a last ditch effort to turn things around for head coach Paul Rhoads who is obviously on the hot seat. Given the short turnaround, I'm not expecting it to have Read more

College Football Gambling: Iowa State fires offensive coordinator Mark Mangino

10.27.2015     08:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Man, another offensive coordinator bites the dust. This time it's Iowa State's loveable Mark Mangino who reportedly wasn't getting along with head coach Paul Rhoads. The Cyclones actually rank a respectable 5th in the Big XII in total offense (464.4 ypg) in league play. Assistant Todd Sturdy will take over and sophomore Joe Lanning will get the nod at quarterback. ISU is currently a +6.5 home underdog to Texas for Saturday.

"Mark and I couldn't get on the same page on a few important items," Rhoads said. "We tried to talk that through again this morning to get us moving in a different direction. In the end, Mark was not interested in that."

College Football Gambling: Miami parts ways with head coach Al Golden

10.26.2015     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Did we mention it's a bad time to be the head coach of a losing football team? Particularly in the state of Florida? Miami decided enough was enough and sent Al Golden packing after last week's embarrassing 58-0 loss to Clemson. Tight ends coach Larry Scott will serve as interim head coach. To make matters worse, quarterback Brad Kaaya (concussion) and leading receiver Rashawn Scott (shoulder) are questionable for Saturday's game at Duke.

"However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men."

College Football Betting: UCF's George O'Leary steps down

10.26.2015     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a bad time to be the head coach of a losing football team. UCF head coach George O'Leary resigned over the weekend following the team's 0-8 start. What's intriguing is the university decided to pay offensive coordinator Brent Key $700K to not take over. Key was considered by some to be the coach-in-waiting but UCF was obviously not willing to commit. Instead quarterbacks coach Danny Barrett will serve as the interim for the remainder of the season. The Knights are currently +24 underdogs at Cincinnati for Saturday.

“2014 was a rewarding season which culminated in our second consecutive AAC championship and third conference championship in five seasons. 2015, however, has been a disappointment to me and many despite the hard work of our coaches and players," O'Leary said in the statement. "Many of the players are young but gaining valuable playing experience due to injuries and graduation. I am sure this will benefit them next season.

“In an effort to allow UCF to accelerate its search for my
