College Football Gambling: Vanderbilt goes with experience, names Robinette starting QB

08.22.2014     06:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt first-year head coach Derrick Mason has named Patton Robinette the team’s starting quarterback. Robinette was under center for historical wins over Georgia and Florida but his numbers weren't all too impressive (52.3%, 4 TDs, 5 INTs). He's the only signal caller on the roster with starting experience at the collegiate level.

"I think (playing experience) had little to do with it in the long run," Mason said after practice Thursday night. "For us, we were just looking for the most consistent guy day in and day out. He had very few lows, a lot of highs and really just did a great job of keeping his composure."

College Football Gambling: Returning quarterback has historically meant good things for K-State

08.21.2014     09:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas State's Bill Snyder has a pretty impressive track record with a returning quarterback under center. The last five times it has occurred the most recent in 2013 with Colin Klein the Wildcats have gone on to win 11 games. Jake Waters is back after throwing for 2,469 yards with 18 TDs and 9 INTs. Getting to 11 wins will be a daunting task according to the betting markets with KSU lined at 7.5ov-144 wins at Pinnacle. The Wildcats play five of their nine Big XII games on the road including trips to Oklahoma and Baylor.

“The expectations we put on ourselves are way higher than last year and way higher than anything anyone else is going to put on us,” Waters said. “We are a very confident group with what we have coming back, but we also know how hard we have to go out and work to win. We have a chance to be a special team.”

UPDATE

A lot of talk over the last 48 hours about how oddsmakers and the betting markets would react to Ohio State's Braxton Miller being out for the year. The Buckeyes were 17-point road favorites at Navy for Week 1 before sportsbooks pulled the game off the board. CRIS just reopened the game -12.5.

College Football Gambling Alert: Sportsbooks take Ohio State-Navy off the board following Miller injury

08.19.2014     07:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ohio State's Braxton Miller reportedly re-injured his shoulder during yesterday's practice and is awaiting results on an MRI. During Braxton's absence last year, the Buckeyes didn't miss a beat with Kenny Guiton (14-2 TD-INT ratio) under center. Guiton however has since graduated leaving redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett as the team's top option. Barrett obviously has no game experience but saw plenty of work in spring practice while Braxton was recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. The Buckeyes open the season at Navy. Prior to Miller's injury, OSU was a 17-point road favorite. Most sportsbooks have since taken the game off the board.

College Football Gambling: Purdue names sophomore Etling starting QB

08.18.2014     12:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There weren't many BCS conference passing attacks as bad as Purdue last season as the Boilermakers ranked 108th nationally in QB Rating (111.8). Rob Henry was nothing short of a disaster and midseason the Boilermakers went the youth route with freshman Danny Etling. Etling took his lumps but did close the season strong (67%, 670 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) albeit against much softer competition (Penn State, Illinois, and Indiana). Second-year head coach Darrell Hazell recently named Etling the team's Week 1 starter vs. Western Michigan. The Boilermakers are currently 11-point home chalk.

College Football Betting: Tennessee Volunteers go with Worley

08.14.2014     02:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gotta love it when coaches announce their starting quarterback and tell us Player X gives the team its best chance to win.  What they really want to say is, "Listen, there is no way in hell I'm starting a true frosh or the JC transfer who we wasted a scholarship on. That leaves the guy who played last year even though he stunk. Next question." You can't help but feel that is the situation for Tennessee’s Butch Jones who earlier today announced that Justin Worley earned the starting gig. In four games vs. the SEC last year, Worley's QB rating was 108.3. The Vols are 6.5-point home favorites over Utah State to open the season.

"Right now Justin Worley gives this football team and this football program the best opportunity to win," Jones said via GoVols247.
