College Football Betting Preview: Calofornia Golden Bears at Texas Longhorns

California at Texas
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
California -3 O/U 60
CRIS Current: California -7 O/U 58
Recommendation: Texas

We’re getting a real pointspread bargain here thanks to the nuances of the betting marketplace here in September.   The bettable line for this game from the Westgate Superbook here in Las Vegas, exactly one month ago, was Texas -9.5.  Let me repeat that: Texas -9.5.  Personnel wise, virtually nothing has changed in the last month.  But the perception of these two teams has changed in the markets, and that offers us legitimate value.

Cal was a hot team in the betting markets in Week 1, taking money against FCS Grambling.  They closed as 45-point favorites and covered the spread by two touchdowns.  Last week, the money poured in on the Bears immediately after the line was posted.  Cal opened as low as -7 against San Diego State, but they closed -13 and again, covered the spread by two touchdowns.

What have we seen this week?  The exact same betting pattern!  Cal opened as -3 favorites Read more

South Carolina at Georgia
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Georgia -15 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Georgia -16.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: South Carolina

South Carolina-Georgia has become one of the better rivalries in the SEC and usually is a big factor in the SEC East race. South Carolina has won four of the past five meetings, including a 38-35 upset win last year as 6.5 point underdogs. The point spread this year is totally out of character for this series, with four straight meetings showing a line of three or less until last year’s 6.5.

Obviously the state of the South Carolina quarterback situation is the biggest factor in the huge number here. Former walkon Perry Orth took over for starter Connor Mitch last week after Mitch separated his shoulder in the 2nd quarter.  Orth had good numbers in the loss to Kentucky, going 13-20 for 179 and a touchdown after taking over. He also through a late interception to seal the 26-22 loss. Orth looked like a serviceable quarterback and Spurrier will coach him up this week, so I would expect the Gamecocks to be fine on Read more

Auburn at LSU
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
LSU -7 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: LSU -7 O/U 48
Recommendation: LSU

After narrowly getting past its first two opponents, Auburn heads into Saturday’s game at LSU with issues at the quarterback position and health among the stop unit with a handful of questionable status tags placed on various key players.

LSU looked strong in last week’s win at Mississippi State despite not covering. They dominated the play in the trenches by holding MSU to 43 yards on the ground while gaining 266 yards on the strength of Leonard Fournette’s 159 yards. Fournette and the LSU rushing attack looks to match up well vs. an Auburn defensive front seven that allowed 238 rushing yards to Louisville and 161 yards to FCS Jacksonville State. All told, if you take away the sack yardage, Auburn allowed 441 yards to both opponents on the ground.

Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson looked unsure of himself in both games as he threw five interceptions and was unable to do much on the ground with only 18 yards. Last year’s starter Nick Marshall Read more

College Football Gambling: Rutgers suspends head coach Flood

09.17.2015     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers announced that head coach Kyle Flood will be suspended for three games following impermissible contact with a university professor. Adding to the Scarlet Knights' misery is the amount of players currently suspended including top pass catcher Leonte Carroo and half of the secondary. Flood however will still be allowed to participate in practice and team meetings. Pick your poison this weekend, bettors: Rutgers' drama or Penn State as a double-digit favorite.

College Football Handicapping: Penn State's Franklin steps up role with offense

09.17.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into last week's game vs. Buffalo, Penn State head coach James Franklin had said that he was going to be more involved with the offense's play calling. The end result was so-so at best. Let's first take into account that Buffalo grades out as an average MAC defense. The Nittany Lions produced only 328 total yards and Christian Hackenberg was a pedestrian 14-of-27 for 128 yards. The positive was that the offensive line didn't allow a sack after giving up 10 in the opener against Temple. In our opinion, PSU's struggles aren't related to poor play calling or lack of variety but rather heavy limitations as they attempt to move the football behind a weak o-line. Saturday's game will be a good indication if there is the potential for improvement as Rutgers' short-handed secondary allowed 478 passing yards to Washington State in Week 2.

"John's in the booth, he calls the plays," Franklin said following Wednesday's practice. "They'll be recommendations, but for the most part, he calls the

College Football Betting Preview: BYU Cougars at UCLA Bruins

BYU at UCLA
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -15.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current: UCLA -16.5 O/U 60
Recommendation: BYU

My clients and I have cashed tickets with BYU in back-to-back weeks to open the season and I’ll recommend them again catching as high as +17 at UCLA.

UCLA has performed admirably to this point with freshman quarterback Josh Rosen stepping in and executing this Bruins offense at a very high level with 71 points and over 1,000 total yards against Virginia and UNLV. Their offense will be a major test for a BYU defense that is prone to giving up yards. The Cougars though appear fairly strong along the front seven after holding Nebraska and Boise State to a combined 2.8 ypc. A lot of Rosen’s success has come from playing with comfortable leads but if BYU can force the Bruins to be more one dimensional, it’s likely we see a few mistakes from the rookie signal caller.

BYU’s offense looked to be in bad shape with running Jamaal Williams leaving the team and quarterback Taysom Hill suffering a season-ending foot injury in Week 1. However, Tanner Read more
