Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Early season college football money burners

09.28.2015     08:16 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in my Wiseguy Report, I look an in-depth look at the 13 teams that started the college football season 3-0 ATS.   In general, those teams had quite a few commonalities:

“Non-descript teams that aren’t getting much hype or love from the preseason betting markets, the preseason publications or the preseason talking heads.  Teams coming off a bad bowl loss or a late season collapse are definitely worth an extra look, as are teams replacing an experienced, but perhaps underachieving, quarterback.”

I concluded the article with this paragraph: “These early season ATS outliers are NOT likely to continue their red hot runs.  The under-the-radar concept when it comes to finding strong ATS teams in early season play holds sway when it comes to early season results as well.  Many, if not most, of the elite ATS teams in college football this year have already lost at least once against the spread, putting them squarely under-the-radar as potential elite ATS squads moving forward."

If you bet on all 13 of the teams that entered last weekend with a 3-0 ATS mark, you lost money.  Read more

College Football Handicapping: Plenty of true freshmen quarterbacks have taken snaps

09.28.2015     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As many as 24 true freshmen have taken snaps this season with a handful currently starting or splitting time. Below are the current stats for those true frosh who have attempted 25 or more passes. Most are playing/starting out of necessity though a few teams are committed to their young signal caller. Washington's Jake Browning and UCLA's Josh Rosen have started since Week 1 and have had their ups and downs. Both were two of the nation's top recruits. Boise State's Brett Rypien was also highly touted and looked very sharp in last week's road win at Virginia. It was only one game but perhaps it was addition by subtraction for the Broncos as original starter Ryan Finley struggled (117.20 rating) prior to getting injured. Another one-game body of work but a positive one as South Carolina's Lorenzo Nunez threw for 184 yards and rushed for 123 yards in a 31-14 win over UCF. We'll see how he does this weekend on the road in Columbia against an SEC defense.

Syracuse - Eric Dungey, 21-36, 58%, 5 TD, 0 INT, 204.03 rating
Boise State - Brett Rypien, 32-44, 73%, 3 TD, 0 INT, 180.57 rating
South Carolina - Lorenzo Nunez, 16-27, 59%, 2 TD, 0 INT, 146.54 Read more

College Football Betting: Alabama in ultra-rare role of underdog vs. Georgia

09.28.2015     06:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nick Saban won't need to search far to find bulletin board material for Saturday's game at Georgia. Alabama is currently being priced as an underdog for the first time since the George W. Bush administration. That's right, bettors. On December 6, 2008, Alabama was catching +10 vs. Florida in the SEC Championship. The Gators won and covered 31-20. As for this week's trip to Athens, Georgia opened and remains a -2.5 favorite.

College Football Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (at Arlington)
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -5.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -7.5 O/U 58
Recommendation: Arkansas

Opening the season with four consecutive home games in which they figured to be favored in all seemed like a sure path into the top 15 for Arkansas. But following a pair of embarrassing losses the past two weeks, the Razorbacks aren’t a sure thing to finish the season above .500. Meanwhile, Kevin Sumlin’s offense and new DC John Chavis’ defense have Texas A&M (3-0, No. 14) exceeding almost every preseason projection. Line movement from the opener to this mid-week writing shows money jumping off of the Arkansas bandwagon which was the hot ticket in town throughout the preseason.

We’re at that stage of the season where certain games dictate that you have to at least incorporate spot-play potential into your handicap. Spot plays aren’t as mechanical as they once were for college football bettors but they still exist and this contest fits the description. Can the spot override the fundamentals Read more

College Football Handicapping: UCLA loses best defender

09.24.2015     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We probably don't talk enough about impact injuries on the defensive side of the football but here's one worth noting. UCLA stud linebacker Myles Jack will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Jack was considered by most to be one of the top defensive prospects in the country. He also doubled as a running back and returned kicks. The Bruins are currently -3 road favorites for Saturday's trip to Arizona.

who would replace Jack in the lineup for that key game, Mora’s comments were again brief. “I wouldn’t talk to you about that even if I knew, and I don’t,” he said.

Mora had been philosophical a day earlier, discussing Moreau’s injury. “Guys are going to get hurt. Guys are going to get dinged up in games,” he said. “You’ll have adversity. It’s how you handle it that defines you.”
